~mini review~

My favourite of the quartet, First Sword picks up from where The Trail of the Huntress left off, with Calvyn's soul suddenly returned to him. Unfortunately, his friends Bek and Jez have been delivered to the arena to fight at the pleasure of the Emperor and Jenna is still off in the woods somewhere. Calvyn quickly assembles a crack team of Derra, Eloise, and Fesha to go and retrieve Bek, but is waylaid by a mental message from Perdimonn asking him to go and alert the Council of Magicians as to Selkor's dastardly plots.

I like a lot about this book. I like the further development of new characters Eloise and Fesha as well as the greater focus on Derra, my personal favourite character. I like the Roman inspired arena fights and Bek's advancement through their ranks (reminds me a bit of Godsgrave, though obviously not as good or bloody!), as well as Calvyn's attempts to learn magic under the tutelage of the Magicians. There's lots going on in First Sword and I enjoyed reliving twelve year old me's experience of reading it.

really funny that these books are so obscure that they don't even have a proper summary and it's just been autofilled with some seller's listing. mark robson could not give a fuck I guess.

Some parts are very romanesque, just as good as the others in the series and has a very sad scene!
