We are standing on the shoulders of giants. This book, step by step, shows that only accumulation of knowledge and understanding throughout the ages has paved the way of our current understanding about the order of things. There are no shortcuts.

Lật giở từng trang lịch sử khoa học, bắt đầu từ 2,5TNT khi con người biết chế tạo công cụ bằng đá cho đến những năm gần đây khi loài người đang từng bước chinh phục vũ trụ, đã giải mã được bản đồ gen người, có thể kết nối dễ dàng với nhau qua mạng internet tôi thực sự khâm phục trí tuệ của con người, đặc biệt là trí tuệ phi thường của các nhà khoa học - những người đã giúp cho cuộc sống của con người trở nên văn minh hơn, tiện nghi hơn và dễ dàng hơn. Trong 2,5 triệu năm, các nhà khoa học đã không ngừng nghiên cứu, tìm tòi, khám phá, càng về sau các thành tựu đạt được càng nhiều hơn, riêng những thành tựu của thế kỷ XX đã chiếm 1/4 độ dài của cuốn sách. Trong các phát minh, tôi ấn tượng nhất với phát minh ra máy in của Gutenberg, nhờ phát minh của ông, tri thức khoa học được phổ biến dễ dàng và rộng rãi hơn, là nền tảng cho sự ra đời của nhiều khám phá, phát minh khác. Tuy nhiên, khoa học ngày càng phát triển, loài người cũng phải đánh đổi một số thứ, chẳng hạn như sự tuyệt chủng của nhiều loài vật (một số loài thậm chí tuyệt chủng chỉ vài chục năm sau khi con người phát hiện ra chúng), biến đổi khí hậu ... đó là cái giá loài người phải đánh đổi để có cuộc sống văn minh hiện đại, ngày nay, tôi hoàn toàn ủng hộ phát biểu của gs Barry Commoner “khoa học dùng một cách đúng đắn không phải là để chinh phục tự nhiên, mà là để sống trong tự nhiên”.
Lịch sử khoa học dài 400 trang, là một cuốn sách đồ sộ cả về hình thức lẫn nội dung, tôi phải mất 9 tháng mới đọc xong, lúc mới bắt đầu tôi không nghĩ là sẽ mất nhiều thời gian như thế nhưng kiến thức sách cung cấp quá nhiều, mỗi ngày tôi chỉ có thể dung nạp được một vài trang. Bản tiếng Việt của Đông A được in ấn rất đẹp, biên tập tốt, chỉ có vài lỗi sai nhỏ.

Da wird man nochmal daran erinnert, dass nichts selbstverständlich ist in diesem Leben.

Pick a year, look it up, and this book will tell you the most important events in the world of science that took place in that year. With hundreds of photos and pictures this is a brilliant book for anyone interested in History or Science. As a genealogist it is useful for putting dates such as the year my 4xGreat Grandfather was born into context with what was happening at the time in the rest of the world.
