Busy soccer coach Trey Novak doesn’t have time for the awkwardness and upheaval dating can cause, but when his cousin stands him up for a lunch date, he meets someone who changes his mind.

Dewey Saunders is dying to get a real job in his field and start the rest of his life, but a guy’s got to pay rent, and the coffee shop is where it’s at. When the handsome customer in the coach’s sweats gets stood up, Dewey is right there to commiserate—and maybe make some time with a cute guy.

Trey’s making hopeful plans with Dewey when his professional life explodes. He and Dewey aren’t in a serious place yet, and suddenly he’s promising to make sports a welcoming place for all people. When Dewey puts himself out to comfort Trey after an awful day, Trey realizes that they might not be in a serious place, but Dewey has serious promise for their future. If someone as loyal and as kind and funny as Dewey is what’s offered, Trey would gladly swipe right for love.

Amy Lane's stories have lost their magic.

I used to be her biggest fan, but she continues to publish with Dreamspinner Press, and since that's a company I refuse to support, I stopped supporting her. This book is on KU, though, so I figured, why not?

Why not indeed.

The title is dumb, and the cover is even worse. The majority of the story is just one of the MCs interacting with his colleagues, fighting injustice, and making big speeches.

The dialogue feels really overdone and theatrical, with everyone talking in slang and exclamation points.

Lane is obsessed with poop and balls and armpits, and all three are mentioned several times.

This is a novella, but it might as well be a Russian novel. It dragged on and on and ON.

I'm tempted to give this book 1 star, but I don't think that would be fair so 2 stars it is.

Low angst, adorable, feel-good novella with lovable MCs and fleshed out secondary characters.
Closer to 4 stars, but in recent years, it's such a rare occurrence for Amy Lane to get back to writing straightforward contemporary romance with no action plot, that I decided to round up in hopes to get more of those. Amy Lane writing is so different from everything else out there, and she doesn't change it to fit the current trends. It might not be for everyone, but I love it

Amy Lane has written some of my all-time favorite books, ever! It’s been years. The first third was on point. The middle was pushing a solid setup. The last third was … okay I’m gonna be honest … bland. So not what I expected. I’m sitting here trying to figure out what the hook was. So many ideas and concepts and great secondary characters to conclude to whatever.

Cute Romance, but - ?

An interesting combination of characters, sprinkled with humor and sarcasm, tossed with social empathy and then well blended and served with a smile. An entertaining, fun read, with decent character development for the length of the story and the anticipated happy ending.

This is an amusing and sweet low-angst treat. I loved it! Plus, there is chapter one of the next in the series at the end, and it had me laughing out loud.

Goal! Score on this Story!

Super cute read with a sweet romance! I absolutely loved this book, especially as my husband hates tea and I love it while he is a coffee drinker and I hate coffee. Sweet and simple, and would recommend it to anyone who likes a sweet romance, with a bit of spice sprinkled in and is a fan of M/M Romance.

I absolutely love Amy Lane’s rom coms and this one does not disappoint. It features coffee shop barista/art history major Dewey and soccer coach Trey. Dewey is out and proud but has no luck in finding a date. Trey is out but only with certain people. Due to being in sports, he has kept his private life private. When the two meet the attraction is immediate. They become involved and I love that Trey doesn’t try to hide his relationship even though he is not totally out. Trey has the support of his fellow coaches, his sister, his aunt and his cousin, which makes things a bit easier. Trey and Dewey are fantastic together and the secondary characters are amazing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes rom coms.

This is a light and fluffy Amy Lane story. I enjoyed the characters. The best part was the bond between Dewey and Trey's cousin. Their banter was great! The love story was nice and sweet.

Most of the story take place in the 'past' (they hadn't been together long, so it wasn't to far in the past.) It started with the present, slipped into when they met, then ended on the present. I do wish that we would have had more of the meeting between Dewey and Nan. She seemed like a great supporting character that I wouldn't have minded getting to know better. I do wish the story had gone a bit beyond and there is a scene I would have LOVED to have seen, but I won't talk about because... spoilers!

All and all, this is a good fluffy Amy Lane story if you are looking for something fun.

It’s a meet-cute. Trey is waiting for someone who doesn’t show at the café where Dewey is a barista. Dewey is not only entranced by Trey but also can’t believe some dating app loser would no show on him.
Trey is a soccer coach who hasn’t dated in forever because he doesn’t want his sexuality to become an issue with either of the teams he works with. He has prior knowledge of people reacting badly, as his parents no longer speak to him. Actually, they not only cut him off but also his sister and his aunt because they still love Trey. You feel badly for the man. The good part is, he has Debra, his sister, and Nan, his aunt, and they are all completely there for each other.
Dewey is a barista only because he can’t find a job using his degree in Art History. He has an awesome boss in Lena, but barista was not his life goal. He’s happy right now, though, because Trey comes to the coffee shop and is stood up. Dewey is there to cheer him up, make small talk and make Trey laugh. “And there was silence again then, but Dewey was pretty sure it was because he spent the moment lost in Trey’s derpy smile and a sort of sweetness in his eyes.”
This is a very low to no angst story, focusing on what happens when a kid from Trey’s team is beat up. Things professionally really ramp up from there and Trey is in the middle of it, in a way he never wanted to be but absolutely will step up for. My absolute, cheer-him-on, love-you-Trey moment is when a homophobic parent group descends on the soccer team.
“Shouldn’t we have a say about whether or not our children interact with kids who live this lifestyle?”
Trey’s eyes widened. “NO!”
He didn’t need to say anything else (of course, he does and it’s wonderful) but that simple NO said everything for me. He is also worried about “Can I tell you how much I hate that a guy I’m barely dating is being used as a political prop?” Trey makes sure that isn’t happening, but when a college player tells him, “Yeah…but if you can help make it better, it won’t be so hard for me.” That’s when Trey knows no matter what, coming out to the team, dealing with parents, being on the news is all worth it if it helps one younger person.
There is a moment, several moments actually, about coffee that made me laugh because something so similar happened to me! Side characters, in the soccer board, Nan, Debra, Dewey’s mom and her “Poop Theater” were all lovely. The story of Kitson’s zit, I admit, made me gag but I think it would make most people gag, including the people dealing with it.
This book is sweet Amy Lane and so cute.

My favorite kind of feel good story. And so much less angst than Amy Lane often delivers, but so spot-on with her sense of humor and her love of soccer (or soccer coaches as the case may be.)

Two sweet young men, one of whom is doing a coffee shop job while waiting for a better job with his art history major background and the other a soccer coach, both in a rec league for teens and for a college team. He comes out but not until the spotlight is on the fact that both of his teams have embraced diversity for the sake of the kids.

By the time he's really ready to come out, he's been somewhat outed by his outspoken advocacy for the teens and for the fact that the sweet coffee barista has become his boyfriend.

Nothing really heavy here. No vampires or magic. Just real people who live in a real world and meet someone special. It filled up my cup of hope for the future. And I'm left with warm and fuzzy feels. Not much better than that. Totally loved this!

What an amazing, short, funny, wholesome novella. Trey is a soccer coach for two different teams. Having gone pro in his life he was always vary of making his sexuality public. He’s out with the important people but not with the public. Which also means that he hasn’t really dated in the past few years. Dewey works at a coffee shop and immediately takes a liking to Trey.
They instantly have a good connection. This is not a slow-burn romance. Right when they meet Trey has to deal with the first player coming out from one of his teams, which means that his life has suddenly become much more stressful. But Dewey is there to help.

I wanna say it again: I loved the novella. Dewey’s bluntness especially. But also the side characters. Amy Lane just knows how to build a family.

Amy Lane sometimes veers from break-your-heart angst and goes down the path of light-and-sweet, warm-your-heart comfort reads, and that is exactly what has happened here.

Short, sweet, and fluffy—it applies to both the book and the MCs. Trey and Dewey were entertaining, and Amy navigated some serious issues without angst, and I admittedly enjoyed the crass humor (love to laugh about unmentionables), and I really liked the supporting characters of best friends and family and how they all clicked.

I did want a little more of the meeting with Nan, though I loved how what was shown brought Trey and Dewey closer together (but jeez, didja have to make Trey hate coffee?).

This was fun, it made me laugh and smile, and that was exactly what I needed.

I really enjoyed Amy Lane’s Swipe Left, Power Down, Look Up. It was a happy little novella about two guys that just clicked. I wouldn’t quite call it insta-love, but they did come together very quickly. They Dewey was immediately thrown into being supportive of Trey at an important point in his life and career. Dewey’s insistence on being there for Trey sealed him as an immediate friend for both Trey and Trey’s family. It was adorable and cute and despite the speed and brevity, never felt forced or rushed. I enjoyed it enough to immediately read it again. Highly recommend for those days you just need something short, sweet, and low-angst.

Trey and Dewey

Such a sweet story. Trey is supposed to meet his cousin Pete at a coffee shop so he could see Lena the woman Pete was trying to work up his nerves to ask out, Pete has car trouble and stands him up and that’s when Dewey the barista introduces himself to Trey. From there the story just keeps getting better and better.

I do wish it was longer. I had such a wonderful time reading this story, hopefully Trey and Dewey will get another book.

Ack Rampage is my fav movie, I’ve watched it lots!

This book was a departure from Lane’s mostly angsty stories with a sweet and light love story with a small amount of conflict. Trey is a soccer coach who is struggling with balancing being supportive of the unplanned outing of one of his gay players and deciding if he is brave enough to plan his own coming out to the soccer players that he coaches. Dewey is a sweet barista who longs to be noticed by Trey and jumps at the chance to support Trey during this stressful decision. This story has great side characters, as all of Lane’s stories tend to have, and I fully enjoyed the whole book.

I love starting off my reading challenge with a feel good Amy Lane. Trey Novak, who lives and breathes soccer, meets Dewey Saunders in a coffee shop. Dewey, who is looking for an adult job, order coffee for tea drinking Trey. It's definitely attraction at first sight. But things are not easy when homophobia strikes the soccer camps and Trey has to decide whether to come out or not, but it's complicated with now having a boyfriend. I love the secondary characters, and we all need an Aunt Nan. This story was very low angst, sweet, full of found family and falling in love.

This a wonderful story. I love the main character, Trey. Trey is forced into the media spotlight when one of his players is beaten up for kissing another boy. Trey has some fabulous speeches that I would love for everyone to stand behind. I enjoyed meeting Dewey and the joy that he brings to Trey and the other characters – he is a gem! The friends of Dewy and Trey meeting up were so funny! I want to hang out with them too! I would love a book two – I think watching Dewey and Trey’s Aunt working together would be delightful!

Sweet, low angst, contemporary

I loved Trey and Dewey.
Their initial meeting was cute and their was instant chemistry between them.
Trey has to deal with a team members problem and it resonates deeply with him.
He has to decide wether to stay safe or to be open and vulnerable and deal with those consequences.
Thankfully Dewey is there to support him and he definitely needs his brash and bold attitude to help him get through it.

Amy always has a way of pulling at the heartstrings in every single book. Whether it be tears of joy or other, it's such a great journey to ride on. This was so heartwarming. Great fun, great wit, and a cat that just makes everything better lol. Beckham is a hoot. These two characters just needed to be together from the start. Whether they knew it or not. They needed each other. And I'm so glad they got their happy ending. This will be worth your time to read!

This book was so sweet. When Dewey sees Trey sitting alone at the coffee shop he works at, he needs to chat with the man he thinks was just stood up. The attraction is instant, but they want to do things the right way and get to know each other better as their first date approaches. I loved all of their friends and family and how everyone steps up for Trey even though he doesn’t ask, including Dewey. They are adorable together. I highly recommend this read if you are looking for a warm hug.

This is a wonderful low angst contemporary romance. The characters were well developed and the pace perfect. I loved how the characters met and how they were able to form such a connection. Having a husband who is an avid soccer fan and coached my sons teams, I really loved the soccer coach aspect of this book. A wonderful book!

SWIPE LEFT, POWER DOWN, LOOK UP by Amy Lane is a warm sweet fast-paced read about soccer coach Trey Novak and art-historian/barista Dewey Saunders who meet at the coffee shop where Dewey currently works.

A fairly light-hearted story about finding love when you’re not expecting it, and about how life giving friendship and chosen family can be.

This was such a cute story. Trey and Dewey end up in an unexpected relationship after Dewey misreads some clues about Trey's dating life. Trey finally comes clean about everything at the end and they both have a good laugh at the little twist of fate that brought them to their happy ever after!

So, so sweet!

I SO needed this. Regular people with not perfect ANYTHING meeting and falling in love. Dealing with life and families and friends. Sigh. It gives me, well, not hope, since I think that ship has sailed for me, but brightness. Thank you!
