Paul’s adventures continue in this action-packed sequel to A Town Called River, filled with friendship, love, duty and looming darkness.Becoming a krsnik, a magic user from Slavic myths which have turned real in the streets of Rijeka, was not what Paul expected upon his return to his hometown, but an intense first few days in his new role in A Town Called River helped him settle into his newfound life as the town’s protector.
Now a new threat looms over his town, growing ever larger and more dangerous, ready to wreak havoc once it spreads out from the river’s canyon in the hills. Conflicted about his private life and his duties as a krsnik, fixing issues big and small, making enemies and dangerous allies along the way, Paul will have to solve the mystery while balancing the weight of his new responsibilities.
As the seasons change and summer sweeps over the horizon once more, Paul and his friends may just find themselves facing a battle they can’t win… a battle that their town cannot afford to lose.
I'm a freelance translator and speculative fiction writer. My fiction in Croatian has so far won seven awards, which I'm really proud of, and I've published several stories in English and (so far) two novels - A Town Called River and Seasons of the River, urban fantasy adventures set in Croatia.
Literary translations are my main jam, but I've also had experience with everything from work with tourist and PR agencies to banks and museums. I've written copy for a similarly wide range of clients.
When I'm not translating, writing or reading (seriously, I read *a lot*) you can find me taking long walks while listening to podcasts and audio dramas - or if there's a sci-fi con nearby, I'm either at a quiz or hanging out with my geeky friends.
I will start by saying that it is really a unique experience reading a book set in a place you know. I liked the book but felt it was at time trying to cram too many things in one book. I wholeheartedly support the idea of starting things in this book and leaving them for later, but there were too many things introduced in this book in too rapid succession so they all kind of became a mess to follow. I don't think this book would be possible as two parter, but some things should then be left out for later because the pacing just felt off at points.
I really enjoyed the kind of episodic way the story unfolded throughout the year or so. It made things like the character progression and ultimately discussion of violence and grappling with committing horrible acts (which I was finding off putting when they were occurring) quite rewarding.
Wild that between reading the first one and this that I was in Rijeka and walked around that old paper factory area. Again, a lot of fun touches that make the world seem very real.
Also - love Viki, she was so cool and fun. And call me a rube, but I was fooled by the reveal of her love interest.
