Starbright #3

Heir of Secrets

Rate this book
The countdown to Stella Day’s eighteenth birthday has begun with only a year left to go.

When Stella turns eighteen she will take over as the Earth’s protector. She will come into the fullness of her powers. And her counterpart will be released from his soul-losing contract.

Only three hundred and sixty five days to go. Only fifty-two weeks. Twelve months… But a lot can happen in that length of time.

As Stella trains for that day, the Darkness closes in around her. Seth sold his soul so that she would be safe until her eighteenth birthday but someone is still trying to kill her. And Seven, Seth’s deranged and evil sister, won’t leave her alone. There are more problems with the Council that’s supposed to be protecting her. And when Jupiter suddenly disappears things go from bad to worse.

It might be easier to solve all her problems if Jude Michaels wasn’t bothering her every second of every day. And if she didn’t miss Seth with such a consuming, paralyzing ache.

When her friends are threatened and her Midwest life exposed, she has to fight through every distraction that plagues her and find the real threat in a sea of enemies that want her dead. Aliah has never been more evil. Seven never crazier. Tristan and Piper are constantly threatened and in danger.

But it’s Seth she fights for the hardest. As he teeters on the precipice of Darkness and Light, can she salvage the soul of a boy who has given it up for her?

Things I said out loud while I read this book (in no particular order).

1. Awe! I love me some Seth/Stella moments!
2. Here Rachel, take my heart. Stomp on it a little more, that's cool.
3. Holy Crap - this fight scene is making my fingernails hurt. (Like seriously, do you ever see those movies where the persons fingernails just bend backwards and you just have to cringe because you can feel that in your bones?!)... yeah, that fight scene made me feel like that.
4. Bahahaha!!! Seven just throat punched Stella! (yes, I should be as happy as that since Stella was the one that got punched, but she got throat punched... That is just so entertaining to me)
5. Dang it. Maybe Tristan isn't as bad as I thought he was going to be.
6. Oh Jude. Is it possible to love you more?
7. Wait?! What?! I knew there was something going on with Jude! I KNEW IT!
8. Ohmygod, THIS IS THE WORST!!! Come back to us Seth!!!!
9. Now, why do you tease us like that Rachel?!
10. Gah, I knew that jerk was a traitor!!
11. Is there a thing going on with Piper and Tristan?!
12. What Jude? Really?! REALLY?!? Her?!
13. AHHHHH!!!! Seth/Stella moment!!! <3 <3 <3
14. What. The. Crap. (this was the ending)

Seriously, the ending. All the freaking secrets throughout this book. Top that off with the unknown of what is going to happen to Seth?! I can't take it anymore!

February, are you here yet?!

(I received this as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.) --And this is the best review I can come up with right now. My mind is still reeling from what I read.

Bravo Rachel. Bravo!

***I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.***

"Secret secrets are no fun. Secret secrets hurt someone."

Those are the wise words of the stripper from The Office.

And you know what?

The stripper is right.

Secrets are no fun! They can destroy everything! Kinda like how Seth destroyed everything in the last book when he secretly went to Aliah and gave up his soul to "protect Stella." (Anyone else wanna punch him for being an idiot? Or am I the only one?)

So when this book is so charmingly titled "Heir of Secrets", you can bet that there are gonna be some secrets floating around. Luckily for us, some of those things are revealed. I think. I still am not sure if I (and Stella) are being deceived and lied to, or if we are just really bad at trusting people.

I mean, who is a good guy and who is a bad guy?

Jude? Jupiter? Seth? Seven?

Whose side are they on? Is there no one we can trust?

Like what if everybody is a liar. What if everyone has gone or is going to go all Anakin Skywalker turned Darth Vader? That would leave Stella all alone to protect the Earth. That girl has skill, but there is no way she has that much skill.

The good thing about secrets is that they create tension and drama. They're also bound to come out someday. I mean, why would you have a secret and then never share it with anyone? That just wouldn't be fun!

Isn't that what the stripper taught us?!

This book starts out with Stella hunting a Shadow in the old barn at the Shield's where she is working for the summer. My first thought, "Yay!" because that means Tristan must be nearby. But sadly, Tristan is not a huge part of this book.

Jude, however, gets more spotlight. He's the one who finds Stella in the barn as she's trying to stab the Shadow. From there, the story takes off as Stella struggles to become who Earth needs her to be, but without the help of her Counterpart.

There is more action than ever before, and more character development for our less major/minor characters. And by that, I am referring to Jude, Piper, and Seven. I feel like their presence in this book increased, and we learned new things about each of them (or at least got to know their character better because they had more "screen time").

Though there is still so much that remains a mystery about them.

Ahem. Seven.

Especially after that ending. I want to know what is going on!

I liked this book a lot! I feel like it built upon the previous story well and gave quite a bit of info but was a little of the same (Seth and Stella being apart ;( I felt like the pace moved well and kept me interested and wanting more. I liked the action and seeing Stella taking on more of her role that she will receive when she turns 18. The ending made my really intrigued to see what happens in the next book and I can see already how much a twist that will be in Stella's life. I am anxiously waiting for Stella's 18th birthday to get Seth back a little but more (hopefully)

She nails it again! A lot more back story involved which slows the action, but canny wait to see the outcome of Stella, Seth, Seven, and Jude! (Don't forget the humans either- Tristan and Piper!)

Found this a tad bit repetitive and wonder if it should have been trilogy. Hope it doesn't go to six books because I think it will have to get a lot more interesting.

Really enjoyed this but the story is not complete at the end of this book and I can't find the 4th one anywhere. Was it published?

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author as part of her street team!! Course, then life got crazy and I didn't even read it until after it was already out.... (ps - this review attempts not to be spoilery, but I think it could give vague suggestions...just nothing concrete -- you have been warned).

I don't really want to write this review much b/c I had a really bad day and so I'm having a hard time sorting out all my emotions. This series has its flaws here and there, but for imagination, originality, emotional impact, action adventure, conflict, gray areas of bad and good -- seriously, I think it's my favourite. It just has so much and is so different!! There were moments in this one where it felt a bit repetitive at times (just stuff that Stella has already thought about, like how she will get her real swords when she turns 18....I think that was brought up multiple times). But on the whole??? It was amazingly impactful. So I did give it a lower rating, but strangely I still consider this my favourite of Ms. Higginson's epic paranormal series. I think the problem is sorting out my own emotions over how things go in the story you know? B/C seriously, Rachel knows how to rip your heart to pieces.....

Things I LOVED: The expansion on Jude's story. I knew it had to be coming, and I knew there was so much more there, but she still managed to surprise me from time to time. So while my whistle was definitely whet with a few answers, I was still left confused on what was real, what it all meant, what I (and Stella) could believe, and where it was all going. I know there's more there. I really loved the depth given to Seven's character too. I have ALWAYS felt that she would be key somehow, but I wasn't sure if she would remain an insanely evil character, or if there would be more depth....I wanted more depth, and holy cow did Ms. Higginson provide. Course, as with Jude, while I was given MORE to the Seven story/character....I was also left with a gagillion questions. Which can be frustrating, especially since I know I have to wait so long for a bigger taste!! At this single moment in time I am desperate for a Jude or Seven (or Jude AND Seven) prequel novella....you know, just throwing it out there.

I LOVED the way things settled out with Tristan and Piper. I know there are many team Tristan's out there, but I wasn't one of them, so I like the stability that that is turning into more.

I really enjoyed that the reader was given lots of hints to reveal the other bad guy, but it also made me really frustrated with Stella for not also figuring it out. I think it's hard to relate to how Stella's dealing with all this since, you know, I'm not an Angel/Star with the entire fate of Earth on my shoulders....so when she gets a visit and doesn't tell anyone, I want to frickin SMACK HER! Seriously girl. Give yourself a hand up at any point here....

Things I was conflicted on (which means didn't love or hate): Seth. Seth tore my heart out in book 2 and pretty much made that the book of the century for me. I can't even express how much my heart hurt watching his struggles. So I was left not knowing what to think in this book. B/C he almost went too far.... There is this constant permeating question throughout the book of whether Seth will be able to return from this horrific ordeal with a) sanity; b) any semblance of good. And I almost felt like he passed the point of no return you know? I mean, I seriously wanted her to kill him. I kind of lost my hope in him. I think he needed a few more glimmers of goodness or at least conflict here and there. It was almost too late by the end. Heck, for a while there I was TEAM JUDE. I know right? I mean, I'm actually ok with how that all played out, but it's leaving me feeling very hopeless and not quite as attached to the Stella and Seth love. The ending gave me some of that back, but I am leery of how this is going to go from here. So....yeah....how's that for some rambling bit of nothingness?

And one other little thing: I totally expected more from the Jupiter side of things based on the blurb (about Jupiter disappearing), but while he provided some interesting answers, he wasn't as involved in the plot as I expected.

In the end, despite my occasional moments of conflict, I'm still totally invested in where this story is going. I LOVED the little tidbits we did get, but so many of those answers were left shrouded in some doubt that I wasn't as satisfied as I expected to be. But honestly, when I think back on it -- book 3 of the Star-crossed series was my least favourite on FIRST read through, but ended up being one of my favourites on re-reads. So maybe once I see where this all is going, I will LOVE this book for what it sets up, kwim? Oh, wait, is anyone even still reading this?? GO. BUY IT. GET SUCKED IN AND WAIT IMPATIENTLY WITH THE REST OF US.

Okay so I just have to say that I feel like a schmuck for hoping Stella totally chopped his head off. Sorry? I mean seriously I am pretty sorry. I know he still loves her completely and he is fighting his own demons but come on Seth! I hope you stub your toe! Your little one that hurts the worst and you have to limp around for a few days with that annoying sting every time you touch it for the way you are pushing and pulling her around. You better be worth all the heartache I have had to endure......I mean Stella has had to endure.

Whew! Okay I got that out of my system.

This is the third book in the series and I was totally upset to learn that it wasn't the final book. Although I am super happy that there is more as well. I just don't know what to think anymore. This series has got me so twisted inside and I am like an kid coming off a sugar high. Happy....no sad.....no happy.....no sad....... Dang it!

Now for the easy part, GO BUY THIS BOOK.

Like right this minute.

What the hell are you still doing here GO!

If I could rate this book 4 1/2 stars, I would. It started a little slow for me but once I got into it the story was so fantastic that it made up for the slow start.

First off, I have to say that there was so much depth to this story. The plot, the twists and turns, the characters, I loved everything about it. I am so in love with Stella and Seth. Clearly they both would do anything for each other and I am really hoping for a happily ever after for them.

Stella's character has grown so much. She has started to let go of her human life a little and become what she was meant to become. She chooses to defend the right things instead of just blindly trusting in Seth. So many times we see heroines blinded by love and make stupid choices because of it. Not Stella. She will do what it takes to protect Earth, even if it means killing Seth

I am intrigued with the mystery the ending left. So many questions need to be answered. I look forward to the next book in this series. February can't get here fast enough.

Ah man, I read too quickly!!! I kept trying to make the story go on when it ended, I just knew that there just HAD to be more!

Each time I begin a Starbright series book I remember just how much I like and enjoy the overall story line. Heir of Secrets is book 3 and with it Rachel expertly provided some much needed history/back-stories, she dove deeper into the major and minor characters, and she developed the relationships between friends/enemies/cohorts/etc with precision. There is action (TONS of action actually), treachery, devotion, self-sacrifice, and suspense - and, just to keep you on your toes, there's Seven! She's the little bit of crazy that's been thrown into the mix - is she or isn't she? Bottom line, Heir of Secrets delivers in lots of ways while still leaving the reader wanting more! I'm so glad there are three more books scheduled for release because it just means more time in Stella's world!

Is it February yet?

Ahhh, so many feels! This overarching theme is still here - and it's strong - though I felt that Stella could have been less wishy-washy. She's 17 and she literally has the fate of the world on her shoulders, so I guess she deserves at least a little slack.

The story moves at a decent pace, though in some ways this feels like a 'filler' book. We're starting the countdown to her 18th birthday (she turns 17 here), and like Stella, the waiting feels tedious. Half the time I was throwing my hands in the air (well one hand, since the other hand had to hold the Kindle) in frustration and the other half of of the time I was trying not to cry or wiping away tears.

The author has crafted another fantastic story. Stella's not my absolute favorite heroine, but that's what makes her real (and what makes the story).

This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! One thing is for sure, Rachel cannot write a predictable or boring story. How can she with the characters she has to work with?

Ugh, I was so not a Jude fan...ever. And even through this book I wanted to hate him, but ended up falling in love with him and routing for him. His sarcasm is probably what broke down my defenses, lol.

Seth and Stella. Two people who are perfect for each other and nothing is going right. If anything their struggles are getting harder. How can you love someone that wants to kill you every time you see them? And how can you love someone you hate so much?

I can't wait for the next book. I'd beg for this to be Rachel's next release if I could. I can't wait to see what is in store for all the characters. Especially Seven, Jude, Seth and Stella. Ahhh! The suspense and waiting is gonna kill me!!

Another few hours spent with Stella and Seth. Oh how I love Seth!! This third book continues the story well and gives more background to some of the other characters. Jude is now playing a bigger part and we are starting to see another side to him. Crazy ass Seven is continuing to set your head spinning and what is going on with Jupiter. Are we losing Seth the dark side, can Stella save him? I love the scenes between them, where everything else is forgotten apart from them.
Rachel you have done it again. I'm so glad their story isn't over yet and that I can continue on this journey with them!!

This is probably more like 4.5 stars, just because it started out a little slowly for me and took a while to really pull me in. Once it took off, though, it really TOOK OFF! And yet again, I just read for three or four hours straight, frantically trying to finish a book by Rachel Higginson, an author that provides vast entertainment and extreme torture to her readers. I say that with lots of love in my heart for her, of course-- she is just way too good at cliffhangers!

February 2015 is a long time to wait for the next book in this series, but I'm confident that it will be very worth it.

I enjoy Rachel Higginson, I do. But I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall with her writing. It's like she's found the perfect formula that works for her and has proceeded to overuse it. There's going to be a love triangle. When it's finally time to choose the guy she'll always choose the one who is her "destiny," even though he's borderline abusive and definitely controlling, over the guy who cares and genuinely treats her well. There's going to be some pretty awesome actions scenes, and there's always going to be an entire book where not a whole lot happens. This was actually a DNF for me. When Stella's "true love" basically left her for dead I was done. Sorry.

I have waited longingly for this book and it didn't disappoint.Lots of twists and turns to this wonderful, ongoing story and the fight scenes between Stella and Seth just about give me heart failure. My only criticism is having to wait until February for the next instalment because I really don't know how I will cope until then, I guess I will just have to reread all of Rachel Higginson's books to keep me going, and believe me that won't be any hardship . I love all of Rachel's books and recommend them unequivocably.

I waited patiently for this book to come out. The date was pushed back a few times. I began to grow concerned if the book would live up to my expectations. Holy bologna it blew my expectations out of the water! I have no idea what I was concerned with. I have read every book released written by Rachel Higginson and I have never been disappointed. She is an amazing writer and has left me wanted to read the next book!!

I rushed right into this and enjoyed it just like I do with all of Rachel's other book. However I feel like we didn't get too far. I mean we found out some really neat info about some of the characters and then at other times you know she is setting us up for the next book by dropping hints and what not. And yes the fighting and the love/hate that just breaks your heart is awesome...BUT it felt like a filler till the next book. Still one heck of a ride

Rachel does it again! This third book in the starbright series is fast paced, lots of action and lots of great moments with these characters! Stella is to become the protector for earth, she comes into her full powers at 18. But the fallen are out to get her and now there are evil among the good. Seth sold his soul to the fallen to protect her. But can their love bring him back can their love protect them from killing each other. This book went by super fast , can't wait for book 4!

I loved this book, easily one of my favorites by Rachel Higginson. The twists and turns that Stella's story takes and the good guys that are bad and the bad guys that are good! I really love Seven's crazy and can't wait to see what happens with her. Honestly where does Rachel come up with these ideas. Starbright is easily one of my favorite YA series ever.

Thought this was a trilogy and in a book lull now I realise I have to wait a year for the next final books! Loved this although all the narrative in between the dialogue made it lose momentum a little - geez I had to keep flipping back pages to try and work out what Stella was actually reply to some of the narrative dragged on so much. But can't wait for the next one!

Absolutely brilliant, highly addictive read the three books back to back, reading until the early hours. I need book 4.so disappointed I have to wait for book 4 I need to know what happens next.

I love the love/ hate relationship that's developed, the character chemistry is strong and the emotional connection with the reader is intense.

Highly recommend
