Allumette by Tomi Ungerer – Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- The book narrates the story of a young poor impoverished orphan girl named Alia. Alia survives by selling match boxes and by collecting left over food from dustbins. She always prays to God to gift her food items and a tricycle so that she can move in the city. The season is winter. Christmas was near. People dressed as Santa Claus were dancing to music but no one was bothered about Alia who was shivering in snow. She moved in front of a pastry shop and saw cakes lined in the showcase. Baker came out and scolded her. Alia moved to an open space, found some wood and burnt it. Soon she heard a siren of a Fire extinguisher van. She moved away in to the darkness. Alia was hungry and weak. She fell on the road. Now, she knew that her end was near. She prayed to God to gift her with cakes, pieces of meat. It was mid-night. Bells was sounding from Churches. Lightening strikes. Alia finds that a soft blanket and muffler has fallen near her. Food items were falling and a tricycle fell near her. Alia picked these two items and covered her body. God granted her wishes which she never had as an orphan. Baker heard the commotion and came out with his wife. Strawberry jelly fell near the baker. Food items were about 37 foot in height. He enquired from Alia what she will do with so many items of food. Alia replied that she will distribute the food to the poor and needy. Postman said that he will inform all people to come and collect food. The rich viewed the long queues of poor, lame, blind, orphans. They also granted items for the poor. Baker and his wife helped in distributing food and clothes to the poor who arrived in queues. Baker stored extra items in his food warehouse. Mayor arrived with a patrol of army men. When he found that food was being distributed, he stood on near the food and started delivering a lecture about his popularity. No one listened to him, therefore, he returned back. Volunteers arrived to help Alia. Newspapers covered the news. People from far and near arrived to collect alms. People tried to find the reason and logic behind food from the sky but they failed to find reason. Alia stored the items, opened Headquarter to distributed to all needy, to areas affected by flood, food scarcity, war. She formed NGO World Foundation of Matchless Light. Alia still comes out on her roof to thank the sky for its kindness. Coloured illustrations help the reader in relating to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.
