Not many books are simply a nonstop page turner. This book takes hold of a reader and doesn't let go. The subtle shifting of time by using clearly defined chapters with titles is brilliantly done.
There are several main characters in this first book of a gripping series. Drake is one of the main while Emery is graced with the other POV. Nonstop action that is edge of your seat exciting. If you do have a weak stomach, you may want to take it easy on some of the action scenes. Realism with a capital R is the raison d'etre of this work.
Fans of Dan Brown will certainly want to get into this series on book one. Epic in style and premise, this book doesn't disappoint. Once you have finished book one, you will be desperate to get your hands on the second book. A spectacular start to what should be an award-winning series.
Disclaimer: I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

I saw this title on Edelweiss some time in March and it looked interesting. I was approved for it but only now I realize that it was already published in 2022.
It made me nauseous from the start, that’s all I can say. Too much violence, too much everything.
I understand this book is very popular and won many prizes; I can understand that there is a market for it, and the writing is very intense.
Thanks to Buckminster Publishing and Edelweiss for this review copy.

A Portion of Malice is a biblical thriller written by Lloyd Jeffries. The book follows Emery Merrick, an award-winning writer, who gets a visit from the mysterious billionaire Thaddeus Drake. He hires Emery to write a novel based on his life. When working with Thaddeus on this book, Emery realizes that Thaddeus is more than a man of mystery. That Thaddeus is a man harboring dark secrets and aims to sacrifice humanity to fulfill a prophecy. Emery finds himself going deeper into the darkness with Thaddeus as a guide, telling the story of his life over the course of time.
I was intrigued by this book. I always am when it comes to books that involve religion and provoke other ways to look at religious principles and other ways to think about them. Jeffries does just that with this book. Additionally, this book is quite the journey from ancient times to more present ones. We see Thaddeus in many forms: the darkness that resides in him, and the darkness he brings about. You get into the head of Thaddeus. You see how he is full of purpose and truly believes in his cause, resulting in me being incredibly surprised by the ending of the book. It was ironic and hilarious to me.
Speaking of comedy, I also found this book to be written in a very funny way. There are some references and jokes peppered throughout the novel that make it an enjoyable read. One of my favorite jokes (that I still think about) is the Batman reference and joke that made me laugh hard. I also enjoyed the descriptions and the writing style of Jeffries. They were enough to picture what happened without it overwhelming the scene and making it boring. The way this book ended and how it shows that it is only the first, I want to see what happens next. Jeffries built up for the next book. I recommend it to anyone who likes thrillers and anything that makes you think about your beliefs.

Good vs Evil possibly at its best
A portion of Malice is a compelling tale of morality told from an incredibly unique perspective.
Lloyd Jefferies delves so deep into the writing that it becomes hard to believe that's its not true.
The story follows a journalist who's tasked to tell the stories of sinners. I'm not usually one for religious inclusions but this was so well done, taking well known historical figures and adding depth through traits and actions not usually associated with the divine or the cruel. It truely had me gripped to follow along. The journalists own journey just as incredible. As he struggles with his own views you can start asking yourself the same questions.
Even the time jumping was done incredibly well, which is usually a difficult feat in writing but seems seamless with Jefferies.
One of the best books I've read in a while, it is a little long but it's most definitely worth it. The age old battle of good versus evil is always a winner but this goes beyond and makes you think deeper about what really shapes our world.

Wow, indeed a Portion of Malice, what a thriller? I must confess on the outset that this book was fun to read, so elegantly structured with emaculate pacing throughout the book. Igneous stood out as my best character of this masterpiece. The author's characterization of Igneous is so vivid, lucid and so elaborately grafted that If I were to bump on him on the streets I wouldn't miss him.
A Portion of Malice, is extremely esoteric that it literally excludes those readers with limited exposure in both reading and world outlook as it were. The book is complex as it blends multiple unrelated themes that requires an elevated curiosity of life in its multiplicity. It is uncharacteristically nuanced and largely layered. The unmistakable overriding theme being redemption, survival, power and morality as the founding tenets of enquiry which deliberately leaves the reader in constant if not perpetual suspense. This style of writing is so instructive that it leaves the reader to make their own conclusions, that's classic and timeless.
This book is supremely grounded on Biblical teaching with a cunning if not witty, merging the old testament, the new testament with man's contemporary way of life, this is not a common genre in book writing. The infusion of horror, Bible, supernatural and apocalyptic manipulation of the story renders this book ahead of it's time with it's thought provoking intrusion of the human mind.
I was particularly enamored when I read chapter 31 which is captioned Syria, Damascus. This chapter had a peculiar impact as my dear wife Hannah is currently in Syria serving under the United Nations peace keeping mission. The author unmistakingly demonstrated themes that were already familiar to me through my dear wife with the resultant effect of literally listening to a cupid song that left me breathless with awe and admiration. I was smitten by chapter 39 that I laughed my lungs out with how it has been grafted. Getting to chapter 40 brought about awe and intrigue in that I picked up a brief text from my younger sister Charlotte that morning that read: Daniel chapter 9. I didn't know what was the object of the message hence I ignored it with the hope that she will orbit back with an explanation which didn't ensue. This led me to read the chapter myself only to find the main theme of Drake's escapeds grounded on that scripture. Needles to say that I had to comfort her the following day to understand her motive but she dismissingly had no idea except that she she just had an inspiration to send it my way. Indeed there remains contestation about the vestigial vomeronasal organ in humans and if this is not a confirmation of its existence then I don't know what is.
The emphatic though hidden from plane sight is the concept of reincarnation which is associated wisely with Drake from his original name of Cain and many other obvious lifetimes that the leaves to the imagination of the reader. How I wish I had participated in the interlocutory stage of the writing of this book for I believe there's a lot of room navigate the object of this book further.
I am indeed humbled by the opportunity to have had access to this timeless masterpiece. Sure I would nominate the author for a Pulitzer any day on this well thoughtful book.
I thank you

A Portion of Malice” is the first book in the newest thrilling series known as “Ages of Malice,” and the debut novel from Lloyd Jeffries, that will likely keep you on the edge of your seat, or at least antsy as you sit comfortably in your favorite reading spot. Set between Biblical and modern times, the story begins with the reader being drawn in by mysterious happenings expected to be found in later pages. “A Portion of Malice” would be categorized in the Christian fiction genre, still, the reader will find similarities in artistic styles to that of author Dan Brown and American film director, Quentin Tarantino – while not initially seeming to go together, they surprisingly work.
The reader follows journalist and Pulitzer prize winner Emery Merrick, Cain, the brother of Abel, from the book of Genesis in the Bible, along with other minor and major characters in jaw-dropping happenings. Thousands of years ago, after Cain murdered Abel, he was marked by God detouring his life path and cursing him to roam the world for eternity. Not surprisingly, given the fact that he did murder his brother, Cain develops evil within him but keeps the hope of forgiveness of God close to his heart. As the years, decades and centuries pass, Cain decides that he needs someone around to record his life and sets plans in action to achieve his overall goal. What Emery witnesses throughout the story, and what Cain and his companions are willing to do is appalling; on the other hand, it proves what some people are willing to do to reach their goals, allowing nothing to stop them – both admirable and shocking.
The similarity between Jeffries’s work and Tarantino’s is the bloodshed and gore throughout the story; there is so much. Now would be a good time to include a trigger warning for readers and examples include violence (gunshots, torture, war zones), sexual acts/prostitution, human trafficking, grooming children for rituals, mental health/substance use, and foul language, to name a few. While these aren’t this reader’s usual go-to’s when choosing a story, I didn’t want to stop reading. Each chapter brings with it additional questions and answers related to previous chapters that keep you going.
Readers familiar and not familiar with the Bible and the stories contained within it will enjoy “A Portion of Malice.” Jeffries writes beautifully, and even when you want to look away, the chapters paint a picture of everything happening that you can only appreciate. A word of advice – nothing is as it seems, prepare to feel all the feels and don’t be surprised when you experience goosebumps. Also, be ready for the second installment in the “Ages of Malice” series, coming this spring (2023)!

Let me start by saying that A Portion of Malice is not your average thriller—it’s an ambitious, sprawling tale that combines ancient secrets, modern power struggles, and the raw vulnerabilities of a deeply developed protagonist. Lloyd Jeffries has written a book that is equal parts thought experiment and adrenaline rush, and it’s one of those rare reads that feels monumental in scope without losing sight of the intimate human experiences that drive it.
The story centers around Emery Merrick, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist whose life has spiraled into despair. Just when he’s ready to give up, billionaire Thaddeus Drake enters his life, offering him a lifeline of sorts: the chance to write his biography. At first, the proposition seems like a curious but straightforward opportunity. However, as Emery begins to peel back the layers of Drake’s life, he discovers a labyrinth of secrets tied to an ancient, shadowy organization bent on fulfilling a chilling prophecy. What follows is a mind-bending journey into a world of immortality, deception, and cosmic stakes that will leave you questioning everything you know about history, religion, and power.
Jeffries balances the personal and the epic. Emery’s struggle feels just as important—and just as real—as the larger, more fantastical elements of the plot. You can feel his pain, his confusion, and his desperate need for truth. The character of Thaddeus Drake, meanwhile, is a masterclass in complexity. He’s charismatic and enigmatic, at times chillingly ruthless, and yet he’s undeniably magnetic. You can’t help but be drawn to him even as you question his motives.
Jeffries’ writing style is another standout; it’s rich, with a cinematic quality. Whether he’s describing the realities of Emery’s life or the opulent world of Thaddeus Drake, the writing keeps its pacing breaks. And yet, it never feels overdone. The pacing is brisk when it needs to be, but there’s also a thoughtfulness to the narrative that allows you to really sink into the themes and ideas being explored.
Speaking of themes, this book is packed with them. It’s a meditation on power, faith, and search for meaning. It’s also an exploration of the choices we make and the consequences they have—not just for ourselves, but for the world around us. These big ideas are well written, never feeling heavy-handed or preachy.
This is a book that demands your full attention. It’s not a casual read—it’s a story that requires you to think, to question, and to engage. But for me, that’s part of its brilliance.
A Portion of Malice is unsettling, thrilling, and deeply thought-provoking; and I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys intelligent fiction.

A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries is the first book of the Ages of Malice series and presents an intriguing concept that mixes fantasy, history and religion.
Hopeless Emery Merrick is ready to end his life, but destiny has something else in store for him. At what he thought was the last moments of his life, he meets a strange and commanding man. He’s not a complete stranger though: Thaddeus Drake, famous global figure, has made a name for himself as a peacemaker and now has a once in a lifetime proposal for Emery: to write his biography. Soon Emery finds out Drake’s darkest secret, an unimaginable reality that will change the course of his life forever. When proof comes out about ancient biblical stories having truly occurred, and we find out that some of the people that were part of those stories are still alive as a punishment from God, the intrigue of the book increases exponentially, bringing something unique and enigmatic to the table.
From the beginning of this darkly alluring novel the characters introduced were intriguing, since each of them held some darkness hidden in their pasts: immortality, cruelty and power. Immortals roam the Earth, and the most vicious seem to be the ones with the most ambition. Throughout the story readers meet figures that they’ll recognize from Bible stories; and I was always excited to see them because I was interested in seeing this particular author’s take on those characters. As we see Cain himself attempt some sort of revenge against God, we see a clear representation of human greed and barbarism. Leading living members of the Roman Legion, Cain has a master plan to shape the human world as an act of defiance against God. I never knew where the storyline would go next, the creativity imbued in the plot is unparalleled in the occult thriller genre.
What is the fate of humanity? Cain has his own plan and is willing to commit the most atrocious crimes to reach it. The narration style lets the reader see through different timelines the evolution of these ruthless immortals. Jumping back and forth, we get to connect the dots, which makes for an engaging and intricate plot.
Though slow at times, the pacing of the story allows the readers to digest the depth of the ideas and the nuances of the characters. This is a visionary story with a fantastically strange aura of mystery. By the end, some reflection into the human psyche will be necessary to understand where these dark characters come from and where they’ll most likely be going in the next installments of the Ages of Malice series. I can’t wait.

Imagine being dealt the worse hand of cards in life, ready to completely give up and off yourself, to the universe's impeccable timing offering you a position that will completely change your life. With this offer, you would have an all-exclusive once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn the truth of biblical history from an individual who is exempt from God's forgiveness.
In "Portion of Malice," author Lloyd Jefferies starts the story with an intense scene of a man, Emery Merrick, a renowned reporter for the Times, reaching the lowest of the lowest to resort to taking his life. From the perfect timing of Longinus the Giant, bearing gifts of a lifetime for Emery to live out his life doing what he does best, report. An introduction to Longinus' boss, Thaddeus Drake, who turns out to be more than just a businessman hiring Emery to report for him, but one of God's most unforgivable, he is Cain, the first murderer of the Bible. Those who understand the story quite well, know that God banished Cain to be a vagabond in the world. Yet, here he is, in the flesh and giving Emery his first of many assignments, which was to attend meetings and gain information about the Prime Minister of Isreal's plans. Cain has the mark God gave him and wears gloves to keep others from seeing his cursed mark, but to meet him would immediately create questions. An interesting thing to note, while Cain just cannot die, he tends to get a thrill from dangerous situations. Emery seems to be caught up in various scenarios trying to piece things together to develop the appropriate facts and text to write Thaddeus' biography. The assignments he is sent on, no questions asked, seems to prove more of a greater value than what he thought.
I didn't think I'd come across a book that once again talked about the first murderer ever existed because most seem to talk about or create characters than people of the bible. To say one would enjoy this book would be an understatement, you can wholeheartedly grasped the concept and purpose of this book from the beginning pages. I highly recommend this book for everyone willing to read, as comprehension could bring you back to looking up scriptures for clarity. It was surprising to note this book as a long lost additional story of what the bible consider to lack for the understanding of others.

It was surprising to note this book as a long lost additional story of what the bible consider to lack for the understanding of others.

"Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Emery Merrick presses a pistol to his temple. Then there's a knock at the door."
This electrifying opener to Lloyd Jeffries’s “A Portion of Malice” not only presents a thrilling opening but also maintains this pattern throughout its development as it blends in with grand and introspective themes woven into biblical mythology, personal tragedy, and good vs. evil.
Lloyd sets his story in a time when the earth is inhabited by biblical characters whose human grudges and ploys are centuries old and threaten to reshape modern history. The protagonist of this account is Emery Merrick, who is on the brink of despair since he gets involved in a plot that has been going on for thousands of years. Thaddeus Drake, who is Merrick’s boss, has unveiled himself to be no other person but Cain in the Bible, thus making him an antagonist with many facets—at times charming, at times menacing—while he unveils his plan to fulfill a prophecy that could lead to Armageddon.
The setting, which oscillates between contemporary grime and the ancient mythical background where the story takes place, forms one of such dualities. Lloyd, however, writes deftly through these shifts, keeping a steady pace that keeps readers engaged throughout. The story is not just about Emery’s struggle with his religion, morality, and sense of purpose; it also presents the global scene as left by the unfolding drama between the past and present.
At the same time, its great expanse and ambitious plot are both strengths and challenges that it has to overcome. Sometimes, there were too many biblical or historical allusions heaped on each other, making it difficult for someone who does not read much of either. Besides that, there are underdeveloped characters like the immortals, who seem more like props than real people.
This book will stick with you forever, even after its last page. It questions your belief system while reminding you of the lurking potential darkness beneath our world’s surface. If you want to read an exciting suspense novel that brings together religious interest with a modern approach, make sure A Portion of Malice is on your list. Prepare to have your worldview shaken.

Two-time Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Emery Merrick is about to end his life when he gets the offer to write the biography of well-known billionaire Thaddeus Drake in exchange for a mouth-watering payday. Merrick accepts what appears to be a lifetime opportunity and soon discovers a staggering truth: Drake is Cain from the Bible, the first murderer who God caused to roam the earth forever. Merrick’s gradual absorption into Drake’s life reveals the secret society of immortals, the billionaire heads, and his plan to fulfill a biblical prophecy concerning the end time. What is Drake’s plan for humanity, and what darkness lies at the other end of it?
A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries is a thriller that weaves a fascinating and somewhat controversial tale involving events and characters from the Bible and history. One of its biggest selling points is how different it is. It’s thought-provoking, and some might even call it startling. The book’s pace is riveting, and the alternation between present-day and historical events creates multiple layers of engagement.
Jeffries delivers his writing with a beautiful cadence that lets you slip into the story easily and follow every action or scene being described. His descriptions are vivid, giving life to the story. His detailed approach to articulating his characters’ experiences is immersive. It makes his writing robust, provocative, and soulful, like a good poem. I always admire a writer’s ability to encapsulate an entire body of art in an apparent mood without being too obvious about it. It’s the subtlety that thrills. And with Jeffries’ book, you can always sense an ominous shadow lurking at the edges of the story the entire time. All in all, I’d call this a great read. It’s fresh, bold, and entertaining.
A Portion of Malice is a captivating political and paranormal suspense thriller that will have readers on edge as the nefarious plot unravels to cause the end of humanity. The journey of a man into the apocalypse and a confrontation with God himself will leave readers stunned and waiting for book two of the series.

Lloyd Jeffries is a gifted author whose words stick with the reader. The author knows how to capture one’s attention with little effort thanks to his distinct narration style. ‘A Portion of Malice’ is an amusing and thrilling book that will have you on edge. The flow of the story is brilliant and the conversations even more appealing. Lloyd Jeffries is engaging and the themes displayed in ‘A Portion of Malice’ are real and relatable in today’s world.
The author starts the first chapter in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Here, the reader is indulged in a conversation between the narrator and a stranger. This dialogue is enlightening. Emery and Drake talk about a series of things which include religion and happenings in the world. The conversation becomes more intense and soon the plot thickens. ‘A portion of Malice’ explores the adventures of the narrator through unpredictable circumstances and diverse locations. I was thrilled when the author moved to different cities, and got introduced to more cities after every few chapters.
The author takes the reader through different cities like Jerusalem, London, Beirut, Las Vegas and even Vatican, Rome, Italy. The change of locations made the reading more entertaining as the reader gets exposed to different customs, ways of living and interesting mini-stories in between the incredible narration. ‘A Portion of Malice’ is an excellent book for readers that enjoy thrillers drama and suspense. Some of the major themes in the book include security, romance, family, religion, politics and cultural differences. Lloyd Jeffries is an exceptional author whose writing is moving and artistic. It takes a talent to write an interesting fantasy book but writing a breath taking fantasy book which is so realistic you forget it is a fantasy book is just next level, and I must say Lloyd Jefferiess IS the next level author.
A Portion of Malice tells a story of an extremely troubled journalist who gets hired to tell the story of the worst sinners the earth had ever witnessed. Jefferiess takes his readers back to the biblical times and forces them to endure on the long but exiting journey from the ancient days back to modern times.
The time travel aspect is quite intense , as the author keeps mixing modern day plot with the ancient one, yet the overall storytelling remains steady and clear ( which is a real rarity within such storytelling style).
I strongly admired the fact that the author gives their own perception of the biblical events as oppose to building the plot around the events the way everyone knows them.
Overall I loved the fact that the well-known characters are portraited to be much more profund than we are used to. So, Jesus, for instance, is not so pure and all-forgiving, while the most ‘evil’ people of our history are shown to have multiple good qualities.
Overall it shows that the author has spent enormous amount of time developing the protagonists and I guess this was why eventually this book seems so realistic and even relatable. I for once catch myself multiple times on forgetting that I am reading a fiction book, instead believing I am reading Lloyd Jefferies ‘s memoirs that recall his interaction with the ‘superiors’ and to tell you the truth s part of me believes that Lloyd Jefferies really was hired to write their story. How otherwise would he menage to come up with something this imaginative yet so believable?

You know a book's going to be good if you have to google if it's blasphemous.
A Portion of Malice follows journalist Emery Merrick from the first time his life ended to the second. Saved by seconds from a self-inflicted gunshot, Emery finds himself with the assignment of a lifetime: write the autobiography of Thaddeus Drake, mysterious global peacemaker. This premise was already interesting, but as the book takes us further into Drake's world, Emery finds himself the torn between the two sides of a millennia-long war with the whole of creation at stake.
I really liked Emery as a character. He felt very realistic, not morally good or evil but somewhere in between, concerned first and foremost about his own survival in literal warzones. Everywhere he turns, he finds himself trapped by diplomacy and Drake's charming omniscience.
The story is intense from the very first paragraph and super easy to read. It's tense and tightly wound, with an atmosphere of captivity without chains. The pacing is almost too fast in places, skipping over a lot of the nitty-gritty politics, but some of that sprinkled in may have been an interesting addition. The timeline was a little confusing; a lot of the flashbacks aren't labelled as such and since the present story takes place in some of the same locations, it takes a moment or two to figure out which timeline you're in. However, these are minor annoyances and it doesn't detract from the overall story, which made me want to never put my kindle down.
All in all, A Portion of Malice is a really enjoyable Biblical thriller (never thought I'd be typing that phrase!) and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I was gifted a copy and asked to post my honest thoughts.

This is the first novel in the Ages of Malice series and books two and three are already available.
It's not an easy one to categorise. Thriller. Horror. Fantasy. Supernatural. Religious fiction. All of the above.
What is easier to determine is that it's incredibly quick paced and an absolute rollercoaster of action & suspense with consequences of literally biblical proportion.
Pulitzer prize winning journalist Emery Merrick has fallen as far as it's possible to get. On the verge of ending it all he's saved and brought to meet Thaddeus Drake, aka the Dove. A peacekeeper of world renown. Tasked with documenting Drake's mission Merrick is inducted into a secret society of immortals. Because Drake is Cain. The original Cain as in Cain and Abel. The world's first murderer.
He longs for Gods redemption and the prologue shows him whipping Jesus at the time of the crucifixion due to his rage of being refused redemption.
With an opening like that all bets are off as absolutely anything could happen.
Cain's closest ally is the immortal Roman. Longinus the soldier. The one that speared and ended Christ's life on the cross.
Emery is in way over his head. He'll meet world leaders in the middle east, the immortal Igneus the Jew, John the Apostle, and find himself faced with documenting what could be the end times.
There are some incredibly violent scenes, mostly involving The Roman, which may not be to everyone's taste but there's no denying the excitement levels and the conclusion which leaves you wondering what will happen in book two.
Thank you Henry Roi PR for the ebook for review.

A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries is a spin on the biblical tale of the crucifixion. It’s told from the perspective of Emery Merrick, as he is ready to give up on life, only to be offered a once-in-a-lifetime job to write the biography of Thaddeus Drake, a billionaire. He soon learns the significance of this eccentric character. He learns that Drake is Cain, who killed his brother Abel in the Garden of Eden.
Challenging his perception of reality, Emery follows Drake, who leads him into a dark world of intriguing people and places that he’s never experienced before. The plot traces the progression of the world’s end, as immortals set their apocalyptic scheme into motion. This book is an enticing story that’s both horror and suspense. It combines religious themes with supernatural, captivating developments that will keep you reading from one chapter to the next.
When I read this book, I quickly felt as though I joined the characters on their journey, which is compelling and intriguing. The plot really drives the story, as key people emerge and provide new twists and creative ideas throughout the book. While this book does not follow traditional theological themes, it takes an interesting perspective on doctrine integrated into new-age ideals and creativity.
Overall, I found this book very entertaining and interesting, especially for anyone looking for a spiritually-themed story. I rate A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries 5 out of 5 stars for it’s unique originality and fun diversion from traditional themes.

Awesome.
A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries is the first book in the Ages of Malice series. It’s an awesome thriller that will quickly get into your mind, and make you think. This thought-providing story gives a different perspective on many points about life, spirituality, and mortality. The plot unfolds around Emery Merrick, a miserable journalist who will find himself embroiled in endless mysteries, thanks to Thaddeus Drake, a billionaire who has dark secrets. When he hires Emery to write his biography, will he discover hidden secrets, or discover more problems that lead to further mysteries?
The author does a great job of writing an intricate plat that includes elements of mystery, fantasy, and horror. It covers riveting ideas and topics such as religion, prophecies, and the apocalypse, from a different angle. Not only is the story well written, but it also makes the reader think while keeping you engaged with an intense plot and intriguing characters.
While there are lots of details throughout the book, it never failed to hold my attention. I found each scene imaginative and exciting, painting vivid imagery in my mind. The story does an incredible job of creating layers of complex developments, without becoming confusing or difficult to follow.
I sincerely really enjoyed it and I recommend it. I give A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries 4 out of 5 stars because I think the author can overcome himself and give us an even better second installment of this promising saga. I look forward to the next book!

Dive into the deep world of ancient mysteries, and the ruins they’ve left behind. Walk through biblical times in the lens of a journalist, and discover a story that will possess you with fear, mystery, love and hate.
Devastating and flawless description carry you over the blood and pacts of Cain and his friends, Longinus and Igneus during the time of Christ until modern times. Words bear weight for Cain, from the savior who says to him “You shall endure. You shall endure. You shall endure.” Years later, he’s an international peacemaker, known as The Dove, who enlists the help of alcoholic, depressed journalist Emery Merrick. I admit, I didn’t know where it was going to go from there, but the thrill and emotion made me fly from page to page. From the storytelling and world-building perspective, it’s so on point and to some extent relatable, that it feels real. The true terror, however, is Cain’s portrayal of a universally loved and admired Thaddeus Drake, who gives nations peace and money, in exchange for his far-reaching nefarious plans. He’s cold and calculating, yet he almost always smiles and provides favors. His relationship with the journalist is kind of a mentor to apprentice one, and it makes you feel for his character more, despite the fact that he’s the world’s first murderer. I don’t want to spoil the whole story, but the ending is both fitting and horrifying, leaving you desperate for more.
Overall, really good pacing, character development, story and ending.

I eagerly dove into 'A Portion of Malice' (Ages of Malice Book #1) by Lloyd Jeffries, and let me tell you, it's quite the ride! From the get-go, the story hooked me with its intense atmosphere and intriguing characters. Mr. Jeffries has quite a knack for building suspense, and I found myself flipping pages faster than I thought possible.
As the first installment in the Ages of Malice series, it sets the stage for an epic confrontation between good and evil - but does so with a deeply human lens. The story follows Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Emery Merrick, who's tasked with a quest that draws him into a dangerous web of ancient secrets, moral dilemmas, and apocalyptic stakes. Mr. Jeffries cleverly crafts a story that is both thought-provoking, tense, and relentless – while weaving philosophical questions about faith, free will, and morality into the plot that moves with the urgency of a high-speed chase scene.
The plot is a whirlwind of twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The characters are well-developed, each with their own unique quirks and backstories that add depth to the storyline. I particularly enjoyed the MC's journey - it's raw, emotional, and yet still incredibly relatable.
Mr. Jeffries' writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making it a breeze to get lost in the world he's created.
If you're into thrillers with a touch of mystery and a dash of psychological drama, "Malice" is definitely worth checking out.
Now I can't wait to see where the rest of the series takes me!
Happy reading! 📚✨

An intricate and compelling narrative.
The narrative grips readers with its relentless pacing and intricate storytelling. The characters leap off the page, each with their own demons to confront and destinies to fulfill. Emery Merrick, our reluctant hero, undergoes a transformation that is as profound as it is harrowing. His journey from a disillusioned journalist to a reluctant participant in a cosmic struggle for survival is nothing short of captivating.
What truly sets the story apart is its exploration of weighty themes such as spirituality, redemption, and the nature of existence itself. Jeffries doesn't shy away from asking the big questions, weaving them seamlessly into the fabric of his narrative. As Emery delves deeper into the labyrinth of secrets surrounding Thaddeus Drake and his enigmatic society, readers are treated to a thought-provoking meditation on the nature of faith, the darkness that resides within us all, and the lengths to which we'll go in search of meaning.
But perhaps the most compelling aspect of Jeffries' work is its ability to transport readers across time and space. From the shadowy corridors of ancient civilizations to the gleaming skyscrapers of modern-day metropolises, A Portion of Malice traverses the breadth of human history with breathtaking ease. Each era is brought vividly to life, immersing readers in a tapestry of sights, sounds, and sensations that is as evocative as it is immersive.

As always, I feel it's only fair to mention that I am a Christian, and my personal beliefs may have had an impact on how much I enjoyed this book. Then again, it might not, but I'm mentioning it just in case. I do feel that non-Christians would also enjoy this amazing story though
A Portion of Malice is a fast-paced, multi timeline story which is set at various times in history, from the crucifixion to the modern day. I found the chapters set during, and just after, the crucification particularly fascinating to read. It was clear at all times where and when in history we were, and the elements of immortal beings fitted perfectly.
A Portion of Malice was incredibly well written, in fact the only issue I had in that respect was that Longinus always says "non" instead of "not" or "no" and this really disrupted the otherwise fantastic flow.
Despite being a lifelong Christian, my knowledge of some of the Bible stories is lacking, but I didn't feel that this was an issue. Whilst there was obviously quite a few references, they were explained enough that I could follow them, and they also didn't distract from the story. That really shows Lloyd's skill in writing. There was a fair bit of violence, but none of it felt gratuitous, or over described.
The plot was exciting, engaging, and fresh. I love stories that can make me think about my faith, without directly being about faith.
This could easily become one of my top series and I'm really looking forward to Book 2.

Some books entertain. Others provoke. A Portion of Malice does both—and then some. Lloyd Jeffries crafts a story that isn’t just a thriller; it’s a challenge to everything we think we know about power, prophecy, and the battle between light and darkness.
From the first chapter, we meet Emery Merrick, a man standing at the edge of oblivion. But fate (or something more sinister) has other plans. Enter Thaddeus Drake—a billionaire with secrets stretching back to the dawn of time. As Emery is pulled into Drake’s orbit, what unfolds is a journey that is as terrifying as it is mesmerizing. The writing is razor-sharp, the pacing relentless, and the philosophical questions linger long after the last page.
This isn’t just a book—it’s a mirror reflecting the fragility of our faith, the weight of our past, and the cost of knowing too much. The historical and theological elements are woven seamlessly, making it a read that is both intellectual and viscerally thrilling. If you enjoy fiction that doesn’t shy away from challenging its readers, this one belongs on your shelf.
Highly recommended for those who love Dan Brown’s intrigue, Stephen King’s psychological depth, and a touch of the apocalyptic. Absolutely brilliant.

Wow, this is going to divide opinion.
Emery Merrick is an award winning journalist, however, his chase to the next big story has cost him the love of his life and saddled him with a serious substance addiction. He can't go on. As the moment arrives where he is ready to end his own chapter, there is a knock at the door. Billionaire and political superhuman Thaddeus Drake wants him to write his biography. He offers him a life of luxury and more money than he can spend, all he has to do is travel with him on his peace keeping missions and make sure his accomplishments are recorded. On agreeing to the job, Drake reveals his true identity, Cain. The biblical killer.
As leader of a secret society Drake (Cain) travels to Israel with the hope of bringing peace, a place where all people and religions can live together in acceptance. But exactly what are his motives, is he still holding out for a chance at redemption?
This really is a story exploring some of the morally grey qualities of religion and the possibility of religious peace. It's also a high adrenaline, espionage type thriller, can you really trust anyone? And more importantly, what price are people willing to pay for redemption?
Depending on your religious views, you may want to check if this is for you.

An Immersive and Entertaining Thriller
I found A Portion of Malice: Ages of Malice Book I by Lloyd Jeffries very interesting, entertaining, and educative. The story is immersive and suspenseful that I couldn't stop reading and kept turning pages eager to find out what unfolds next.
The author successfully merged the past and present to make the plot so interesting and relatable. It is interesting how Jeffries kept a perfect balance between character development in the past and present activities.
The actions of Cain in manipulating the political leaders is reflective of how our society is rotten with corruption and the way politicians put their selfish interests before the common good of the masses. Moreover, the book also depicts how religion has caused division rather than unity across the globe.
The book has valuable moral lessons. For instance, the fact that Cain's mission fails shows that evil never wins. Moreover Cain's failure to replace God proves the fact that God is incomparable and irreplaceable.
I enjoyed reading A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries and recommend it to every lover of Thriller, Suspense, and Mystery stories.

Amazing Book!
A Portion of Malice by Lloyd Jeffries is certainly one of the most interesting books I've read recently. This is the first book I'm reading that's based on biblical characters and I love this fresh take. Having been raised Christian, Cain's story is a familiar one, but the author put such a new spin on it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Even though this is a work of fiction, I love how the author weaves the story of Cain in a very thrilling and scary way. The story is well-paced and fast enough to keep you interested, yet slow enough such that characters and the story feel well fleshed-out.
The author does a great job of telling the story from both the past and the present, in a manner that is still easy to follow and understand. In a way, reading the book made me feel like Emery and the personal transformation he had after learning Cain's secrets.
I was still thinking about this book, long after I put it down. Needless to say, I'm ready to read part two.
