Wayne Walter Dyer was an American self-help author and a motivational speaker. Dyer earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Psychology and an Ed.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private therapy practice. He became a popular professor of counselor education at St. John's University, where he was approached by a literary agent to put his ideas into book form. The result was his first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), one of the best-selling books of all time, with an estimated 100 million copies sold. This launched Dyer's career as a motivational speaker and self-help author, during which he published 20 more best-selling books and produced a number of popular specials for PBS. Influenced by thinkers such as Abraham H. Maslow and Albert Ellis, Dyer's early work focused on psychological themes such as motivation, self actualization and assertiveness. By the 1990s, the focus of his work had shifted to spirituality. Inspired by Swami Muktananda and New Thought, he promoted themes such as the "power of intention," collaborated with alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra on a number of projects, and was a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Okay, this wasn't quite 4 stars but I'm rounding up for ONE reason. I listened to this audio yesterday, and there was something mentioned in the beginning I wanted to hear again. So today, I started re-listening to this for that one part and I ended up listening to it ALL again and I managed to glean a couple of other things that didn't grab me yesterday. So for that reason, I'll round up.

I liked this for the most part, but some of this had me shaking my head no. But this author comes across as a nice guy with an honest intent on uplifting those who are seeking a better life. So I'm fine with 4 stars.

This was a decent little book. I think I would have enjoyed the full versions of the four books that it contained better. Wayne didn't seem as animated in this book as other ones that I've read. In the second book/lecture I was confused about the differences between the 3rd and 4th way to get strawberry ice cream. One was by synchronicity and the other was by manifestation but the way he explained it made it seem that the process was the same. Or perhaps the end was the same but the means were different? I dunno. I didn't get that part. Hopefully someone who's read this book can explain it to me.

I liked what he taught about kindness vs. being right. We ought to practice being kind rather than being right (even if we really are right). Being right introduces you to stress and anxiety. Just suspend the idea of being right for a time when it's appropriate. I think this is helpful practice during Elections when people are too busy hating each other as they try to be right.

Many of his teachings of Manifestations were familiar to me from what I read in The Secret. In fact I had the opportunity to realize Manifestations/The Secret a day after finishing this book. If you'll be so kind as to indulge with me...

On Saturday, Ashley and I ran a Spartan Beast race which consists of a half marathon and 30+ obstacles interspersed throughout it. Given that the race takes several hours to complete I had brought a few treats and energy items such as power bars, Shot Blocks, and a Gu to eat during the race. Unfortunately, in the beginning of the race I lost all but one of the food items (we'll call them treats). I figured we had better eat that last remaining treat sooner rather than later before we bonked (anyone familiar with long exercising and bonking knows it's the worst and you can't recover quickly from it). It was at this time I noticed that the ground was littered with wrappers of people who had thrown away their treats. I wondered to myself "maybe some unopened treats had accidentally fallen out of their pockets like mine did and we'd be able to find some good 'ground scores' (an Anasazi term for finding something on the ground)." So I began scouring the ground as I ran but was let down every time because some wrappers looked full and I'd reach down to pick them up only to find a sticky mess and almost reducing me to tears. These 'mirages' were very deceiving. I decided that I needed to apply The Secret and Manifest to the Universe that we needed some treats to endure our race which we still had more than halfway to go. I thought to myself, "We're going to find some treats and the Universe will provide somehow." About 10 minutes later I found my first ground score! I shouted praises to the High Heavens above and Ashley and I quickly devoured the Gu. Then, a while later while climbing up the embankment of a river I found some Shot Blocks in the mud that were still sealed in it's wrapper! I ate a few and passed the rest to Ashley. By now we were quite content and getting our Second Wind to keep going in the race. Things were looking great until an hour later we were feeling close to bonking again. Not long after asking the Universe for another treat I found an unopened mustard packet on the ground. I tell you mustard had never tasted so good before. Unfortunately, it didn't last long until we were ravenous again. In my delirious state of stumbling on the dusty, beaten path my eyes were fixed on the ground for any clues of treats. While muttering another prayer to the Universe - to my utter amazement and much astonishment - I found a single granola bar out of it's wrapper tossed by the wayside in the brush. Miraculously, my eyes were able to detect this camouflage-like treat among the shrubs and yellowed grass. I inspected the bar and wiped off any dirt and split it in half with Ashley. Fueled by yet again another Manifestation, I gave a prayer of thanks to the Universe. At this time we were seeing light at the end of the tunnel but we still had a ways to go. While crawling under the barbed wire obstacle, I began to be desperate for something, anything! I found an open bag of Shot Blocks with one last miserable Block in it. I bit it in half and ate one piece while handing the other half to Ashley. Frantically searching for more treats while crawling on my belly, I reached for empty Gu packets and sucked out the last few drops that a previous contender carelessly threw by the wayside. I found a few more nearly finished Gu packets for Ashley which she gratefully accepted. By now the sun had began to set and we could hear the distant crowd at the finish line. We had made it. Thank you Universe.

When you keep your attention on what you don't want, what you don't want will manifest itself. Keep your attention on what you do want.

You can change what you do or change how you feel about what you do.

One of the above stars is that I REALLY liked the idea of the ocean as the source of all life or whatever. I’ve wanted to find some sort of larger spiritual concept to refer to, mostly because spirituality is associated with good health, but I don’t like any of the available anthropomorphic options and don’t get much out of the concept of energy. So thanks for that! I heckin love the ocean.

Early on I thought I might get a little more out of it but it was incredibly repetitive (same examples and stories throughout) and I was disappointed to hear the kinesiology stuff, which is easily debunked. Sure, I’m not reading a book on spirituality for its scientific merit, but he invoked science enough that it would have been nice to hear some.

On a basic level, I do think that positivity can make it easier for good things to happen: you’re more attentive, you connect more with other people which makes them more likely to do nice things for you, you take advantage of opportunities, you have more confidence, and it does seem to be overall good for health as well. However, he does not at all make connections between the action and the reaction. He just says “this thing causes that thing because I said so and/or because my friend who is famous said so.“ Meh.

This series of Dr Wayne Dyers program lectures was very inspiring. I recommend anyone who is searching for personal growth and inspiration in their life. I also suggest when you start listening even if there are topics you don’t like just listen through. He has some powerful things to say. Don’t miss out!

Really more of a 2.5 for me, but I'm feeling generous. It was okay. These lectures seemed more rambling than some of his others. Not his best stuff, and he does repeat some stories, as others have pointed out. Not sure if I would listen to this collection again.

I love the way he breakes it down and give great analogies to help me understand what I can change in my life. My favorite was about how to focus on what you want vs. what you don't want. The currency is our thought and where we place our energy.
