Born to Rule

Rate this book
The once necessary alliance between humans and druids lies in tatters under the rule of an immortal tyrant, born from light but steeped in cruelty.

After nine centuries of serving under this vile ruler, my hope is but a flicker. I’ve clung to the promise of a revolution—a revolution that’s finally come, in the form of a fierce and cunning young woman. A bounty hunter named Mira, whose destiny proves entwined with the fate of the realm's missing god.

Mira grapples with the veracity of her calling, questioning the wisdom of the gods and the folly of mortals alike. But in a realm where treachery lurks at every turn, she must decide where her allegiance lies.

Though her initial motives may not align with our cause, she possesses abilities capable of tipping the scales in our favor. But with power comes sacrifice, and as she grows in strength, the drums of war grow louder.

I just hope she decides before it's too late.

I’m stumped with how to rate this. I really like this concept and the storyline, and REALLY love the FMC.

I think this plot is so original, and honestly vibed with this. I think my sporadic reading over the holidays has warped my rating a bit because the second quarter of this book dragged for me, the pacing was inconsistent. I also kind of struggled with the romance until the last half of the book, but again, could be due to my sporadic reading schedule.

I overall really did like this, I was super intrigued with the plot and would like to move forward. So I think I will give this a 4 star rating for now, but my rating could change given some time.

This is the first book in a new romantasy series with humans and druids. Tropes include secret identities, found family, angst, he falls first, hidden powers, insta attraction, witty banter and a stabby FMC. This book contains some open door spice scenes.

The Lovely: There was a lot to love in this book but especially the main characters. While the primary focus is on the stabby assassin, Mira, I would also maintain the witch Sidelle is a primary character, as are the two male characters, Eurok and Balis. I loved how complicated Mira was as a character and how Sidelle struggles to understand and relate to her. The both grow in beautiful ways over the course of the story.

Also Lovely: I also loved the plot and the pacing in the book. I read this in one day and couldn’t put it down because I absolutely needed to know what happened next. Even when there wasn’t a lot of action, the tension was still maintained. The world building and magic system was complex but never felt overwhelming or like the author just dumped all the information on the reader.

Rating: 5/5 Stars 2/5 Flames

Recommendation: I received an advance review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This big ends on a pretty large cliffhanger for most of the characters. I need book two, like NOW. 😂 This is a fantastic and well-written debut nov l that you will likely want to consume in one sitting.

✨Born to Rule✨

Well, this was fun! In this very immersive and intricate world, we get to see such intriguing characters!

We follow 2 POVs in Born to Rule. First is Sidelle, a 1,000 year old Druid balancing the health of the realm of magic and humans on the precarious knife tip of a King with a stolen throne. Her and her partner, Eurok, are two strong, empathetic, and encouraging influences as we meet our focus character, Mira. Mira is an assassin who lives on the streets. She has worked her way up to an assignment that lands her in front of the king but not in a good way. She soon finds herself facing death or a training program with Sidelle to become a better assassin. However, Sidelle knows something Mira does not and that’s when plot twists arise and hard decisions are made. As our feisty and stabby FMC reluctantly navigates this magical side of the world, she meets another Druid, our tattooed shifter, Balis.

In BTR, you get to explore creative worlds, hidden identity, MONSTERS, elemental magic, reincarnation, spice 2/5, found family, plot twists, angst, and a major cliffhanger.

Thank you, Kacie, for this gifted arc. I need book two yesterday. 🫶

This is a must read!

This book is full of fantasy and amazing world building. I was completely drawn in from page one! The FMC is so strong and resilient. The characters in this book are well thought out and jump right off the page.

This book did not feel like a debut novel. Kacie has such a way with her words, I am in awe of her talent! Got this as an ARC and I’ve never been more excited to order the physical copy! It was an absolute joy diving into this world and I am looking forward to the next!

Born To Rule, a thrilling blend of action and romance, stands out with its unique world-building that delves into the realms of druids and humans. The narrative kicks off with a bang, immersing readers in a rich tapestry of lore and history that is easy to follow.

While Mira, the assassin, may seem to be the central figure, it is Sidelle, a witch, who truly takes the spotlight. Her history, trauma, and choices, intertwined with those of Mira, Eurok, and Balis, form the heart of the story. Kacie's skillful character development leaves readers yearning for more, a promise that will be fulfilled in the upcoming books.

Sidelle is convinced that Mira is the reincarnation of a fallen queen and her best friend, and she embarks on a perilous mission. The druids have been awaiting this moment for over nine centuries, a chance to end the reign of the vile yet immortal king. But the path is fraught with obstacles, twists, and turns, and much more is yet to be revealed.

My heart ached for Sidelle and Eurok and the way their story was unfolding. I understood some of the reasons behind it, but still more for them. I loved their relationship of friendship, devotion, and so many other deep emotions swirling around. Sidelle is my favorite character, and I want her to achieve her goals and cure her heart.

The relationship between Mira and Balis was more of a fast burn, but I didn't mind that. They did have time to explore their feelings, and I loved Balis' character.

But then, that ending... I was in shock. Utter shock. Kacie, I need Book 2 as soon as possible.

I enjoyed being an ARC reader for Kacie Ross and cannot wait to see what the sequel will bring.

Born To Rule will offer you
- intricate world-building
- druids and humans
- monsters
- meddling gods
- hidden identities
- hidden powers
- reluctant hero
- fast-burn romance
- he falls first
- found family

"We don't choose our monsters, Mira. They choose us."

What an absolutely amazing debut novel! I was hooked from the beginning and blew through the book without leaving a crumb! This is an extremely well-written epic fantasy with a good splash of mythological flavor for extra punch. Kacie effortlessly takes us into a unique and complex world with huge plots, several subplots, multiple characters and intricate magic systems. Somehow she is able to do this without overwhelming the reader, making the story easy to understand yet captivating. I was especially surprised by how she was able to introduce so many characters and make me feel so invested in them all!

The over-arching story is about two Gods (and their chosen vessels) feud, which began centuries ago. The King has been at silent war with the magic welders and is methodically working to overpower them while keeping the humans charmed to his benevolences.

Sidelle is a high witch, who has been secretly working against the King to save her people for over 900 years. She is now faced with the task of training Mira to be the weapon for their salvation.

Mira is a human bounty hunter, with a stone cold heart, doing whatever it takes to survive on the streets as a young girl. She has no interest in the war and does not believe herself to be involved.

Mira gets thrust into this epic battle, partially by chance and partially by destiny. She is immediately resistant as she has learned to focus solely on herself since no one else will. Sidelle, and her male reinforcements, have to break down Mira's walls if they hope to use her to save their world. They have to not only make Mira believe she is capable of doing what they ask but also convince her to want to do it.

There were beautiful comparison's to Sidelle and her ride or die companion, Eurok's, relationship and the budding relationship of Mira and the druid warrior, Balis. The FMC's even compare themselves to each other. However, where Sidelle's story revolves around long held angst, passion and holding themselves back for the good of their people, Mira's story is fast, powerful with tons of banter and steam. Mira/Balis also recognize the need to hold back for the greater good but Mira's personality means she tends to take what she wants, when she wants it. I LOVED the differences between them!

The storyline was fast enough that I never felt a slump but not so fast that we missed context or subplot formation. The plot twists and cliffhanger had me reeling and dying to get book 2! A fantastic job for this author. It was unique, fun, enthralling and beautifully written. 5 stars for me!

Wow! What a great book!
Thank you Kacie for letting me be a part of your ARC Team, this was a great read that made me want to keep on reading. I loved the growth between all of the characters, especially seeing Mira grow up from just being an Assassin to finding her found family, and wanting to learn and live their ways. I love how we saw our four main characters Eurok, Sidelle, Mira and Balis all blend together and fight together too. I can’t wait to read book 2 because, what was that ending?! I needed more!! I felt like I was missing pages because I couldn’t believe it ended like that. Especially after Mira and Balis declared their love for each other and said they would never leave each other. So what was that?!! (That’s the only reason why this is 4 stars not 5, I needed more at the end, and I thought I was missing something there)

Otherwise what a great first book in the series and I can’t wait to read the second one!

This was a good start to a new romantasy series. It had everything: betrayal, treachery, gods, goddesses, druids, monsters, elemental magic.

Following 2 POV's and a host of characters bring this book to life. Expect some laugh out loud moments, suspense, witty banter, swoon worthy moments, Plot twist and a shocking gut-wrenching cliffhanger.

Born to Rule does not read like a debut novel. This story had me hooked by first chapter.

“We don’t choose our monsters Mira. They choose us.”

This author makes you care about every character. The side characters are just as important as the main characters.

This book leaves you wanting for more, the cliffhanger…omg!!!

Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR. Five star fantasy novel.

What in the world!!! That ending!!!! 🤯🤯
I can not wait for book two!!

“We don’t choose our monsters, Mira. They choose us.”

The author did an amazing job getting us invested and loving the characters & she not only gave us one couple to root for but two!! She also did a phenomenal job with the story, pacing of the book, and unique magic, and adding some mythology in there was perffff!!

I loved Balis & Mira, their banter was 🤌🏻🤌🏻
& Eurok & Sidelle I felt were the power couple!!🖤

This book took you on a rollercoaster!!
It had me laughing, sitting on the edge of the couch (literally), it made me tear in some 🫠🫠

There wasn’t a lot of action but I didn’t mind, hoping book two will have more action as book one I felt it as an introduction and getting used to / comfortable with the story and plot and characters😊

Def recommend for a fantasy romance found family read 🤍

- Elemental magic
- Hidden powers
- High stakes
- He falls first
- Found family
- Witty banter

WHAT AN AMAZING DEBUT!!! Is this one of my favorite fantasy reads of the year so far? ABSOLUTELY! This is the first book in a new romantasy series with humans, druids, witches & monsters and I can already tell I’m going to be absolutely obsessed with it 🖤

The world building in this was fantastic. I loved the elemental magic & also learning about the druids & different creatures in this realm. The characters were amazing. The romance, the banter, the spice was just right and it fit the plot so well.

We also got not one, but TWO fictional men to fall in love with & obsess over (as if I didn’t already have enough book boyfriends & fictional men to obsess over 😅). But the one that truly stole my heart was Balis Glaistrong. My oh my, the man that you are. He could do or say anything & I would fold immediately. Also, he was so gone for our girl Mira & I was really giggling & kicking my feet the whole time they were interacting with each other 🤭

I absolutely LOVED Mira! She was an absolute boss, so incredibly strong & fierce. She will definitely stab you if you threaten her or the people that she loves and I just love that.

Also, the CLIFFHANGER this book ended on?? I almost threw my kindle across the room. I need the second book like YESTERDAY! 😅 This is an absolute must read & you need to add it to your TBR right now!! Check tw!

Thank to Kacie for the opportunity to be on your ARC team & read this beauty before it came out!

This book caught me by surprise and took me for an amazing ride! When I signed up to read this as an arc read I was planning on giving the author some grace with this being her first book HOWEVER she needs no grace because she has written such an amazing book! I would have never guessed this was her first book! This book combines Fantasy and Romance in such a balanced way. Even though this books has some epic fantasy in it, as a new fantasy reader it was easy to follow. This story is also in 2 POV - Mira & Sidelle

In this story you meet main FMC Mira which is a female bounty hunter living on her last dime. Once Mira takes out one of the kings most wanted, she is hoping to make some money to be able to start her new life. However, once she arrives to cash in her killings she is taken to be interrogated by an immortal tyrant of a king.

We also meet Sidelle, a 1000 year old high Druid, that is also called to the kings palace to meet Mira. The second she meets Mira she notices something very familiar about her and realizes exactly why the king wants Mira as his assassin. Mira has no idea fate is about to take her on a new adventure and change her life forever!

The plot of this story is one that I can definitely say I’ve not read before. While it held familiar elements I loved the refreshing take on the fantasy genre. However, I think I would classify it more as a cozy fantasy read than your average romantasy novel. There were several times throughout the story where I wished that I could’ve looked at a map to better gauge where parts of the story were taking place. Some characters I liked, while others I found a bit too arrogant, full of themselves and patronizing for my taste. Additionally, some of the language and things referenced felt too modern, while others felt too archaic and that left it feeling disjointed and in-cohesive. Overall, I enjoyed the story a lot for a debut novel and look forward to seeing where the rest of the series goes.

This book is so amazing!! I was pulled right into the storyline, with a world and characters so beautifully built. The detail in this story is so good without feeling overwhelming or tedious. We follow 2 couples, who you route for the entire time. There is fantastic witty banter, insta attraction/love, touch them and ☠️, hidden powers, magic, twists and turns and just a hint of spice. The ending just left me in so much anticipation of the next book!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC(advanced reader copy) of this book. Being the first ARC I’ve ever gotten, my standards were set shockingly high for future arcs to come 🤗 📖

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and boy was it a ride! I thought the magic system and world in this book were super fun and the main love interest???? 🔥👀 I’m obsessed with the banter and adventure this book gives! ⛰️

The story started out pretty quick and then slowed a bit in the middle but REALLY ramped back up at the end which for me, was very fun!

Fair warning, there is a lot of info you end up getting that lends for a super crazy cliff hanger at the end. 😅 Needless to say, I will be needing the next book asap. 😂🖤

Wow! I absolutely ate this book up! The world building was complex, but delivered in a way that made it easy to follow, and not be overwhelmed. The magic system was unique and kept me wanting to learn more about this world.

Eurok, and Sidelle gave “mom and daddy vibes” in the best ways possible. They were basically the ultimate power couple.

The banter between Balis and Mira was chefs kiss! I absolutely enjoyed their relationship, and can’t wait for more in book 2.

This book had me laughing, smiling, crying, and sitting on the edge of my chair wondering what was going to happen next.

The ending has me feeling very impatient for book 2, as I must know what happens next.

Overall I absolutely loved Born to Rule, and think everyone should read it!

I did not see that ending coming! Mind blown…

What a rollercoaster this was, with a strong ass FMC Mira! Given this is a fantasy, what a really relatable character, early twenties trying to find her way in the world and doing what she has to do to survive.

& we get 2 couples in this book, that you just route for so much! Sidelle & Eurok and Mira & Balis! 🥹❤️

I’m just still not over that ending …

I would like to thank Kacie Ross for sending an e-arc of her debut novel. Yes debut novel! This novel will take you on an adventure you will never forget. The way that Kacie writes is very remarkable. Magic and humans alike try to save what is theirs. Saving the world relies on one girl. Can she save her land from a tyrant king? This is as close as to SJM as you can get. I loved every chapter. Crying at the end.

A promising debut novel. This fantasy story is set in a world of humans, druids, witches and magical creatures. Mira is a bounty hunter who has led a hard life, all of which causes her to be good at killing and protecting. She is witty, sarcastic and stubborn. One day, she meets Sidelle, in the kings dungeon and learns that she might be the reincarnation of a long dead princess who could potentially save the kingdom from the corrupt king. Balis and Eurok were great secondary characters and love interests, it was almost like 2 enter twined love story plots. I wanted to love this book - but from the beginning I had some hang ups. I found it a little hard to get into, the beginning read like a second book in the series, I felt confused and like I was missing too much information. It does come together with time, but I prefer a story telling style that lays it out more in a linear style. Also, her love interest isn’t introduced until like 38% of the book in - but their chemistry is pretty quick to burn so that does help. I found the pacing a little odd for this book. I think it sets up for a good second book, but this one was missing something for me.

Easily the best book I’ve read all year. This story is full of rich character development, beautiful imagery, and a surprising story. I was lucky enough to Beta and Arc read this book. Kacie paints a beautiful and thrilling picture and I can’t believe it was her debut. Some of the highlights for me are:
🗡️Dual fmc pov
🗡️MIRA just being sassy and loving roasted nuts
🗡️SIDELLE is so powerful and kind and nurturing.
🗡️EUROK the definition of a golden retriever if the golden retriever had knives.
🗡️BALIS is the black cat man of my dreams. A fierce warrior who loves with all of his soul.
🗡️A unique magic system
🗡️SMUT, SMUT, ooh and ✨magical✨ smut!

I CANNOT wait for book 2! I’m so glad to now call Kacie a friend and cannot wait for more people to fall in love with Born to Rule.

It’s currently 3:30am as I’m writing this and my god!!! I had a busy week so I finished this later than I wanted bc I could not stop thinking about this book and I COULD NOT put it down! 🤭 The magic, politics, and history building is INSANE! It’s incredibly immersive and intricate, while being so easy to digest. I was so enthralled by it and the moving pieces that are building upon the past as you read. Mira is a fierce, determined, secret softie FMC who has been through more than her fair share. Her slow divulgence of her childhood and way of getting by tear at your heart strings and seeing her find her family and her place in the world was so healing. Sidelle is such a wise, strong, and relatable FMC and I absolutely loved her mana (magic) and the way it manifested thru the pages.🥰

Plus the side characters (& just different fantasy races and characters in general) are incredibly developed and deep, having perfect personalities, descriptions, backgrounds, wants, needs, just everything you could hope for! Both warriors pining for their person tore my heart out and I was kicking my feet begging them to get together. The spice and heat between characters is just 🥵 PERFECTION!! The plot is so intriguing and I seeing it unfold and then the TWISTS?! I was on the edge of my seat the deeper I got into the book. It felt like an SJM book where the last 100 pages took me on a rollercoatser and I loved every bit of it! This is 100% one of my favorite reads of the year! The intricacies of the plot, different dimensions, Gods, magic, were amazing, even the different herbs and potions being divulged was sooooo cool!! Cannot wait for book two 🙂‍↕️😍

I received this as an arc but I do want to say I also pre ordered the paperback and hardcover. So if that doesn’t tell you how I feel about it then I guess read the rest of the review 😂.

Had life not been so crazy lately I would have read this in one sitting. I loved everything in this book. The world building is captivating. And the plot had me hooked the entire time. The character felt complex enough and lovable.

This book had me feeling so many different emotions. For a first book in a series I’m absolutely hooked and bonus points since the author is exceptionally kind 💜.

Also Kacie. I think we need to have a talk because I need the next book ASAP. 👀 you can’t just leave me hanging like this 😭.

I’m so sad this book ended. I wanted to continue Mira’s story so bad. That being said, I cannot WAIT for book two.

The outline of this book was perfection. It was never boring. It never dragged on. I CRAVED getting home to my reading nest to dive back in.

The world building was informative but never convoluted. The magic system is so cool. I love the way it is explained and how each being is different.

I did not see then ending coming. I thought I had it all figured out! But alas, I was bamboozled.

Thank you, Kacie, for allowing me to read your beautiful piece of art. You are truly so talented and I cannot wait to read what comes next.

Let me just start by saying I love Mira. Defiant, strong, cunning, and unapologetically herself. She struggles with the possibility of who she is, who she is being told she is, but after witnessing it herself, she can't help but accept her new life. Sidelle, a witch, tasks herself with teaching Mira to wield her mana (or magic). Sidelle was such a lovely character, kind, protective, and level-headed but not someone to be messed with. I loved the dual POV chapters with the two, showing their own individual storylines as they work together and form a plan and show their side to everything. Sidelle's relationship with Eurok was so sweet but sad at the same time, and Mira finding herself comfortable to reveal things to Balis was such great development. The found family in this book is just so amazing, I LOVE a good found family trope. The way Mira learns to open up and trust her new family, becoming stronger from it and realizing her power.
The story Kacie created was absolutely incredible. I adored Raven Ridge, it seemed like such a wonderfully cozy town. The way she built the scenery was stunning. From the dangerous beasts in the forest to the serenity of Star Hewn Lake (iykyk 🥵). The book and its concept were so intriguing, with the different types of wielders and the involvement of their Gods. The world Kacie created sucks you right in, and let me just say, Eurok and Balis 🤌🏻🤌🏻 would die for their women.
And the end!?! THE ENDING!?! My mind was like 🤯🤯 I did not see it coming and I sat there speechless for a moment because now I'm left wanting so much more!!!

This was an excellent debut novel from Kacie! The unique magic system, multiple complex world plots and enemies to lovers with a one horse trope had me hooked from the beginning. The author easily built this complex fantasy world that details hundreds of years of its history without ever overwhelming the reader.

Without giving too many spoilers... there are multiple gods each of whom has their own world (called variants in the book) to govern. This book highlights the ongoing fight between two of the gods and their chosen vessels. A fiery bounty hunter FMC gets stuck in the middle of the human king's silent plan to eradicate all mana users, and a 900+yr old Witch who is trying to save her people. The book contains a slow-burn centuries long romance for everyone's favorite Witch, amazing quick witted banter, a one horse trope and of course a fast paced steamy romance that is fitting for our hot tempered bounty hunter.

The storyline was fast enough that I never felt a slump but not so fast that we missed context or subplot formation. The plot twists and cliffhanger had me reeling and dying to read the sequel! 🔥🔥

Wow I am Breathless. I loved this book. I messaged Kacie a few times on TikTok (super awesome lady btw) in regards to this book. Getting through the beginning of back in time took a bit. I struggle with the language and just getting "in to it". I am Thankful I pushed through. Mira is a highstrug, fiesty bounty hunter who's most recent bounty sends her on the trip of a lifetime. This book has all the good stuff banter, romance, enemy's to lovers, touch her and die also a little bit of SPICE. Personally I loved this book, I immediately messaged Kacie telling her how much I loved it and ordered a signed paperback. Can not wait for #2!
