Aline Alexander Newman is a National Geographic author of seven books. Two of her non-fiction chapter books, APE ESCAPES and ANIMAL SUPERSTARS, have won the ASJA Award for best children's book of the year. And ANIMAL SUPERSTARS was also named to Amazon's list of the "Best Books of 2013" for children ages 6 to 8. Both are also available as @RecordedBooks. HOW TO SPEAK DOG, which Aline co-authored with Gary Weitzman, DVD, won the Animal Behavior Society's Most Outstanding Children's Book award for 2013. It appeals to all ages and led to her adopting a big, black Lab that she and her husband found abandoned on a country road. The dog's name is Moose. A companion volume is called HOW TO SPEAK CAT. When not chasing Moose around, Aline loves making school visits and inspiring kids to read and write. Her newest book for Nat Geo is called CAT TALES. Released in April 2017, Kirkus says "it is like an Internet kitty video in book form."

This was a very interesting book that tells the true story of three animal rescues: clouded leopard cubs, a sea turtle, and a loon caught in fishing line. Each chapter also includes fascinating facts about the animals.

I found Lucky Leopards at a local bookfest, and when I saw it was about animal rescue stories I just had to pick it up. I'm so glad to see rescue stories being written for children, so they learn early about how important it is to help animals in need. These three stories about a leopard, a sea turtle, and loons are engaging and educational. Each story has facts about the animals and photos. The pages are colorful and the print is easy for children to read. As I read each story I thought to myself, this one will be my favorite. I was so touched by the commitment of the people who cared about the animals they rescued and the lengths they went to to save and rehabilitate them. I was especially delighted by the third story - The Lone Loon, which took place in my neck of the woods in NNY. The rescuers? The author and her husband! I am looking forward to sharing these stories with my grandchildren, and using them as a tool to reinforce their love of animals and their need to care for them, whether domestic or wild.

Lucky Leopards focuses on efforts to rescue injured or lost animals. There are three stories contained in the book, one about two clouded leopard cubs taken from their mother by someone looking to make money from them, one about a stranded turtle, and one about a loon tangled in fishing line. The stories are interesting and informative with sidebars that explain more about the animals and their current environmental status. I appreciate how they show the difference that can be made in the lives of these animals. The book is colorful with a child-friendly design. The book includes an index, additional resources, and difficult word pronunciations.

Leopard cubs, sea turtles and a loon.

Can you tell the difference between a common leopard and a clouded leopard? This book tells you exactly what the differences are and shows you pictures of these cubs side by side. One of them can purr and meow; the other one only ROARS!

I like how this was broken into three separate stories. I wish the book had more nonfiction text features and didn't have the distracting pronunciations for words that were somewhat basic.

I really liked this Children's non fiction book. National Geographic does a great job of combining great pictures with facts in each story. I can't wait to read all the others!
