Sanctuary
NO MORE DARK MODE.

Patrick Beckley has been hunting that alpha male for years. He knows that the only way humans will survive on this planet is if they eradicate every single primal. And this particular alpha male—massive, with a cruel streak unusual even for primals—was the one that killed his daughters.
So when Patrick stumbles across a monastery that appears to be harboring young primals, he doesn’t care that they might be half-human. They’re a threat to the human species.
As Bran’s hopes for a peaceful life fall apart, and fragile territorial boundaries erode, he learns that his promises might be harder to keep than he’d thought.

I received an arc in exchange for my honest review.
Oh my gosh, I loved this one! I can't get enough of Molles' stories in the Remaining Universe. Always full of action and suspense. I was so excited to read a story solely about the characters of Kat and Bran. Molles did not disappoint. I fell in love even more with both of them. There were also a few new characters introduced in this one, and they were great, too. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here, especially after that ending! Well done, Mr. Molles, bravo!

DJ hits it out of the park!
I loved this book! It’s a stand-alone story that doesn’t strictly require you to read any previous books in the Remaining series, but I suggest you read The Valley first, which is also a great book. The setting is post zombie apocalypse. Well, they aren’t really zombies, because they aren’t animated dead, but I digress. It's about human survival alongside zombie evolution and their relationships.
The book starts in the past and we are introduced to Shay, a new character. Honestly, I could have read a whole book about Shay’s backstory. DJ gives us just enough, then brings us forward to current time with Bran and Kat, picking up right where The Valley left off. I made the mistake of beginning this book around 7pm and was up reading all night.
If you’ve read the previous books in the series, you know that DJ has a knack for writing action scenes. He lives up to his reputation in this book. It’s a quick read, because you can’t put it down. Well done DJ!!
If you love The Valley, you are going to love this book. The only thing missing is our beloved Lee Harding, who is likely off on his own adventure. Don't miss this book if you are a fan of The Remaining.

Sanctuary by D.J. Molles is the latest in the Remaining Universe and he switches focus to the “bad” guys. Which it turns out these “bad” guys are not necessarily bad. Just people. Or a person and half a person. It’scomplicated. But oh, so interesting.
Sanctuary continues directly after The Valley, focusing on Bran and Kat after they leave. Wounded from the events at the end of the Valley, Bran is hobbling along, supported by Kat. They stumble into Shay and her boys at an abandoned monastery and receive much-needed help. Have Bran and Katfinally found a place to rest after a life of strife? This is a Molles novel, the answer is of course not.
There is violence and fighting, as this world is a violent place. But as is Molles’ way of storytelling, no one is one-dimensional. Well, most aren’t. Primals are still pretty violent. Molles shows growth in Bran and Kat along with the secondary characters. Shay grows to understand she may have to change her mindset for her and her boys to survive. As always, Molles'character building is so intricate and deep that you can’t help but fall in love with them, or at least like them a whole lot. Which is one of the things I think I love most about his writing, such deep characters.
Lee and the gang are great and I look forward to more adventures with them, but Molles expanding his world was such a wonderful experience. It felt like a natural progression. I hope to see more of Bran, Kat, and Shay along with Harden and the rest. It would also be great to read the stories of others. I have no doubt Molles could more than pull it off.
To say that Sanctuary is a book you can’t put down doesn’t do it justice. It’s more than that. You have to read the next sentence, then one more paragraph. Fine, just this chapter. Ok, One more chapter. Next thing you know the book is done. Life is busy and I wish I had more time to read. With Sanctuary I felt like I had no choice, one more sentence, one more paragraph, one more chapter.
Sanctuary, with its compelling characters and intriguing story, will have you hooked from the first sentence to the last period.

I have been a huge fan of DJ MOLLES since I stumbled on the first book in his Remaining series 10 years ago. I have followed along, stressed out as he has run my fav character through the mud and blood over and over. He truly made me fall in love with characters and absolutely HATE some. The primal for instance, we are supposed to hate them. Then the hybrids, holy cow we can’t let them procreate and destroy our civilization! But now, but now he has made me fall in love with a new set of characters…. The hybrids. I never would’ve thought after ten years that I would be rooting for the hybrids and would be worried about their well being. Bravo Molles, you have really made me look forward to what will happen to this new group along with my champion “Jax” .

I could not put it down. Molles always does an amazing job at humanizing the characters and this book is no different. From page one, I found myself invested in the characters. I love how Molles describes the characters and setting so well that I can actually visualize the story as I read. You know that Kat and Bran do not exist in real life but you become so invested that you root for them in a weird way. Do not pass this book up!

Another win for DJ Molles. While Molles' undead have mutated from the mindless, stumbling, walkers that they started out as into fast moving, smarter, ape like "Primals" he has ratcheted up the action and pace. In this one off, spin off, with a few known characters, its all well done, decisions make sense and the story is frantic and entertaining. Another great add to the world of the Remaining.

Instantly intriguing. It had me at the first chapter and I could hardly put it down. Gritty, exciting, relatable, with an evolution and development of the universe that is fascinating and kept me engaged. I genuinely enjoyed imagining being in the universe he created and trying to imagine where he would take it. The story picks up focusing on two minor characters from the previous book, however the little back story needed to enjoy the novel are given early on. Molles is a master story crafter, with plots that move, and characters that develop. Something I appreciate is his willingness to explore themes like empathy, redemption, and the power of love, all while telling a story filled with action.

D.J. Molles absolutely killed it with this one! His style of writing and storytelling is by far one of my favorites from any author. He does not pull any punches and will put you, much like his characters, through an emotional ringer. I absolutely could not put this down once I started. I’ll keep it nice and simple with no spoilers. Molles has taken a somewhat saturated genre and completely took it into a fresh and new direction. This is part of a much larger series but definitely a great place to jump in for new readers to enter probably the scariest but also incredibly entertaining universes in fiction. 5 Stars!

I disdain post-apocalyptic zombie stories as juvenile escapes into fantasy with little 6thredeeming value. I like hard sci-fi as it seems to be less mind-numbing and purposeless when there is a reason for the as yet unrealized future to entertain discussion about very human existential
problems and solutions.
I had become a little anxious in a search for that after finishing so many of my favorite author's books, and somehow Molles' The Remaining Universe got a little of my interest. So, I held my nose and read a few chapters in the first book of the series.
I quickly could see it was a bit more worthy of my time than I had anticipated. With a passing nod to the actual pandemic we have just emerged from (we hope) I could set aside some prejudices. And although Molles' primal don't fall far off on the spectrum from mindless murderous unstoppable abominations common to the genre, there was an unexpected journey through the slough that was...worthwhile. For me, anyway.
The characters were surviving the horrors of their world, but were evolving as human beings in the face of all too inhuman challenges. Not only from the beasts they faced outside, but often from the beasts within. What would the apocalypse do to a person? The zombies were a convenient means to explore the human condition we hardly need
monsters to experience!
Molles used militaristic action, techno-thriller framework, excellent descriptive writing and believable conflicted characters to tell an exciting story that I raced through every book to enjoy. So, not saying those aspects aren't important, too. But to find explorations of difficult themes through the lives of the people (and not-so-much people) was what I appreciated and hadn't expected. In human, inhuman, and half-human observation, it was possible to be
thoughtful, contemplative, and find reason and rationale despite the setting. It was an interesting look at how the unimaginable end of the world reflects our pre-apocalyptic lives and what the potentials might be under the most
extreme of conditions for mankind.
Or zombies.

Completely "new to me" author that I'm actually not sure when it got added to my Audible library. It was a novella that was a part of an existing series, but it was touted as a stand alone so I thought, "why not?" Unfortunately, I went into this cold so I didn't even know what the storyline or even the genre was.
Imagine my surprise when I realized that this was a stand alone but set in the world of a multi book world from this author about a plaque that hits the world and wipes out about 90% of the population? The difference is that instead of creating typical zombies, the mutations are actually called "primals". While they have some similarities to what we have become used to, there are some pretty major differences as well.
This story introduces us to Bran and Kat. Bran and Kat are on the run (this part is a little vague) but apparently Kat is what is called a hybrid. She is 3/4 human and the rest primal. But Bran thinks of her as a daughter or friend. The crazy thing is that she is like 3 or 4 years old, but apparently as big and developed as an older teenager with definite thinking skills and some humanity.
The two find a hidden monestary in the Oregon wilderness where an older woman is trying to raise 5 "hybrid" boys. Again, these kids are young - the oldest is 6 - but they are definitely as big and bigger than most grown men. Shay is trying to teach the boys to focus on their humanity and she absolutely abhors violence.
Well, in a world where things have gone to he**, the whole "anti-violence" mantra, well, that isn't really feasible (there is a whole back story about "who" the boys are and why they are there). Anyway, a hunter who has been tracking the huge, deadly and evil Primal Alpha Male "Khan" who has been seen in the area, discovers their monastery and things go pear shaped from there.
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It is extremely fast paced and full of action, yet the surprise was the depth of character development that we get from this unusual group of found family. It is one of those books where you keep thinking, okay, just one more chapter. And before you know it, you realize that you've finished the book.
I will admit that it made me curious enough to look up the author and look into his other books. This series- The Remaining - sounds interesting and I think I might add it to my constantly growing TBR list.

Eloquent brutality is one of this author’s strong points and he never holds back. If you’re ready for that, then dive right into this excellent follow up on The Valley’s character arc and story of a pair of murderers looking for a last chance at redemption.
This story starts right after the end of The Valley, so I recommend reading that book beforehand. The Remaining Universe expands into the territory of the macro evolution of the primals and the downward trend of the human race in what the author refers to as “selection pressure,” and it’s a harrowing reality to be a part of.
Human holdouts are sprouting up all over the map and most are out of contact with any form of government, making for small groups of survivors who have suffered through 6 years of loss and terror.
But humanity always adapts, and these groups are learning to defend themselves, trade with each other, and work to stay fed and alive. However no one is ready for the idea of hybrid humans - unwanted offspring of primals who take human women to grow their packs. Can something so awful fit in the vestiges of human society? Or will it become a third front of aggression? A paradigm shift is happening and Buck and Kat are in the center of the growing storm. So also is Shay, a new character in the story who has been through hell, but has chosen to thrive.
This is a story of those scraping by a meager survival, it’s about those who have been beaten down so badly they should just give up…but don’t, and it’s about a social need to grow against all expectations. Molles weaves these issues into a grand yarn of a story that grabs hold of you and makes you feel the terror that’s just beyond the light’s edge so so well. And that glorious terror will get into your head and remind you again that these remaining humans are not at the top of the food chain anymore. Highly recommended!

DJ Molles is one of the best storytellers of our time. He continues to amaze me with every book and every new character. His writing style is superb. His ability to describe the scene and surroundings helps me to visualize as if I were watching it on video. His character development is outstanding. I was wary about this book when I realized it doesn’t feature Lee Harden. Once I realized this story follows Bran and Kat, first introduced in The Valley, I kind of felt cheated, having expected the return of Lee Harden. Being a big DJ Molles fan and part of his street team, I continued to read. As I continued reading, I began to see Bran and Kat in a different way. I realized this is the story I didn’t know I needed. This story begins only a few days after the events of The Valley. Bran and Kat find sanctuary with a woman named Shay, her son, and several orphans. While living a peaceful life in the sanctuary, they’re forced to protect themselves from Kahn and his pack of infected, and from a neighboring community hell bent on hunting and destroying Kahn. Bran, Kat, and the others find themselves woefully unprepared for the task. The last chapter is where I realized how this book fits into The Remaining Universe timeline. I believe this book was necessary as a bridge into the next Lee Harden book. This book allows for the character development of Bran and Kat and prepares them to be featured in future books. I’m now looking forward to more of Bran and Kat either with or without Lee Harden. As with every other book written by DJ Molles, I highly recommend this book. DJ Molles always leaves me looking forward to the next book. If you’re not a fan of DJ Molles and his work, you will be. I promise.

I was offered an ARC of Sanctuary and cannot put in to words how much I enjoyed it! For the first time in years I started this book one morning and finished it at some crazy hour at night the same day! I haven’t smashed through a book in a single day since I was at University! DJ’s writing here had me hooked, stopping only for pesky life essentials like spending time with my family and eating (I jest, I love food almost as much as my family!).
I’ve read all of The Remaining’s ongoing series, including Harden and the standalone novels, so I’m deeply invested in the world DJ’s built. Getting to see it from a brand new perspective was fascinating, and I was desperate to learn more about the central characters in this book since they were introduced in The Valley. I was secretly hoping for a story about them when they departed in the previous book.
The action is incredible as always, but the surrounding drama and interpersonal stories were excellent, seeing things from the perspective of people, infected, hybrids and another new community too. DJ’s definitely exploring some new storytelling here. It’s been wonderful seeing his writing expand and develop through his various series and works.
As a (currently) standalone this could be an ok entry point for new readers, as, though there’s a lot that’s gone on in the narrative before this, DJ establishes the state of things quickly and interestingly.
I can highly recommend this book! DJ Molles has an exciting, dynamic pace to his narratives, with plenty of action and twists to keep you turning the page. His characters are believable and vulnerable, making investment in them easy.
My only wish is that it was longer, though that isn’t to criticise the pace, more that I’m always sad to finish these books!

Bran and Kat made their way to an old monastery where an old woman lived with a bunch of hybrids.
The world has been devastated by a virus. The virus killed most it infected. But some survived and were changed. Bigger, faster but the virus chewed big holes through parts of their brains leaving them mere animals with huge jaws and teeth. And hungry! They were calling them Primals. Their favorite prey were humans. Lately, they had taken to killing and eating men, but taking the women prisoners to breed with. The results were hybrids with the strength and instincts of Primals, but the cunning of humans.
Bran and Kat made their way to the old monastery and found Shay living with a group of hybrids including several male hybrids. Male offspring were immediately killed by Primals, but Shay had saved a handful along with the female hybrids she had saved. Bran and Kat became part of the group.
These amazing characters are immediately friends and family, becoming more than just words on a page. They are a part of our lives through the course of the story. A living, breathing group of relations you can care for, cheer for, cry for. Tears and cheers! Great storyline! A great read!

I’ve been following Lee Harden and his companions since the first book of The Remaining many years ago. Since then, I’ve read every other work that DJ Molles has put out. To say that I was excited to find that the universe continued after the events of The Remaining is an understatement, and I was equally happy to see that they could be enjoyed without having to know the origins in their full, because I could share these books with friends who are less enthusiastic readers and listeners of literature.
Sanctuary is exactly what I had hoped it would be, and follows in the path of hard choice, violence, loss, triumph, and determination that I have come to enjoy and expect from the series, characters, and writer. It t was a nice departure from the established characters to follow these, and I found myself turning each page faster than the last.
If you’ve been a follower of Lee, pick up a copy! If you’re considering jumping in, start with “The Valley”, or even better, “The Remaining”, to get a full picture.

So have you ever read a series and hit a stretch where you wonder is this the end of the road? Unfortunately that is where I am with the Molles Primal series. The last two books including this one just do not have the kick ass mojo of the other books in the series. The whole hybrid primal of part human part primal is just stupid in my opinion. To coin an internet phrase it is ghey bro. In this one you get the continuing adventures of two characters from the last book in the Hardin series I did not especially care for Bran a hitman and Kat, who is a hybrid. Another issue is everything in this book is utterly predictable. Bran the assassin who really just wants to be a good guy and "stop the violence." During a raging zombie apocalypse? Really? Here it comes: Ghey. The female "queen b" who comes across as a diversity hire that wants to protect her "boys" who are all hybrids. Wait for it: Ghey. Hopefully this series gets back on track, but I am not holding my breath.

I was beyond excited to see this book come out! A continuation of the Remaining series! After the Lee Harden series, I was afraid that would be the end of the line, but D.J. Molles has delivered yet another great story and hopefully a glimpse into the next adventure. This story, Sanctuary, with Kat and Bran, is a great stand alone read by itself and I would love to see how their story continues to develop. I highly recommend reading any D. J. Molles you can get. Great writing and great storytelling. As I said in the review title. Keep em coming Mr. Molles!

"Sanctuary" by DJ Molles is a thrilling adventure that explores themes of acceptance and survival in a harsh world. Fans of "The Remaining Universe" will enjoy Bran and Kat's continued journey to find safety. If you are new to The Remaining Series of books, I highly suggest you start at Book 1, and then you will quickly find yourself back here ready for what comes next. The Remaining Universe has become one of my favorite series of books, right there with Red Rising and The Dark Tower. I received this ARC for my honest review.

Wow, what a ride this series was. The way DJ writes flows from page to brain effortlessly. Tactical details were present but not so overwhelming that I couldn't understand what was going on. The emotional...Holy crap, his writing had me allll over the place. Audible gasps to teary eyes, laughter and anger. There was many a time that I was scared what would happen to the characters. I can't wait for Abe to be released. I kind of ooppsied and read the Harden series firest. Now I'm going back in time to read the Remaining series. PLEASE KEEP WRITING!!

Compelling read
I have read most if not all of DJ Molles books Nd this new story from the remaining universe does not disappoint.
Great characters, well written storytelling.
I feel this could be read as a standalone story to get you into the Remaining universe or as a continuation from his Lee Harden books.
My only "complaint", if you can call it that, is I finished it in around 24 hrs . That's how compelling I thought the story was. Looking forward to the next book.

Fantastic Book
I couldn't put this book down. I was excited to continue the story of Bran and Kat and this book did not disappoint. Bran's character undergoes an amazing amount of growth. We meet Shay and her group of hybrids. Together, this group firms a family bond that they are willing to fight to hold on to. Both Primals and humans want to destroy them. I highly recommend reading this book!

Another ace by DJ.
The ability to take minor character(s) from one storyline--especially ones not-so-beloved--and create an original story centered around them is ballsy, and difficult.
I was skeptical about "Sanctuary" because it was obvious from the intro that this wouldn't be the fast-paced pseudo military story we're used to from The Remaining, but the tension and character development is right there.
Keep em coming DJ, this combat vet and active PO loves your work.

Evolving
This whole series is constantly evolving. Characters change and new ones pop up. This one follows the story of what happened to some of the characters from previous books. How have they been going?
Best part is that the "primals" evolving and growing. Taking on rolls.
If you're a fan of military stories, zombie stories, mad Max type stories or ANYTHING similar you have to pick up the Remaining series!
His other books are good too.

Well, there was that “book of dog” one, but such a great writer deserves a flight fancy, now and again.
If you’ve just stumbled on this book, stop. Go get the remaining series. You’re welcome, in advance! Probably, the best in the genre. His forays elsewhere are superior reads as well.
My only complaint, he doesn’t write as fast as I read!

Sanctuary
Another outstanding story by the Master D.J. Molles! Really never been one to read sci but this is beyond that. Well done Sir. Every side of emotion is touched on, really looking forward to reading the next book and seeing where this is going. I have been a faithful fan of all these books and have never been disappointed.

One of the best ever!
I wasn’t sure how a book in the Lee Harden series could be good without, well… Lee Harden, but DJ Molles has done it again. I loved the story, the character development, the premise and promise of the next adventure.
