No one is certain what caused it, but in only 6 days a zombie plague swept over the heart consuming over 29/37ths of the world's population...Disgusted by the sight of the walking dead devouring His precious creation, God has sent back His only Son to once again set right the wrongs of the world. But this time there's no room to turn the other cheek. This time, the message isn't one of love and compassion. This time, the J-man is looking to unleash some Wrath of God, because this time...JESUS HATES ZOMBIES!
What a great concept: The earth is consumed by the zombie plague... so God sends his son, Jesus Christ, back to humanity to save them. Sounds like a winner, right? I mean, how could you fuck that up?
Well, here's how: Write the concept as a series of short comics that never really go anywhere and mostly stay on the riff of "Jesus is a foul-mouthed saviour who kicks a lot of zombie ass with baseball bats." Add a reformed zombie as the only being on the planet that believes in Jesus' return. Again, sounds like a winner.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The joke gets old after the first couple of short stories. The art is inconsistent from story to story (sometimes downright awful). And the overarching premise of the series is never concluded. It just becomes an exercise to see how gross, foul-mouthed, and outrageous the writer can get with the same concept. Never thought I'd call a zombie story featuring Jesus boring, but here it is.
I contributed artwork to one of the stories in this. (We Need A Hero) One of my first "big breaks", if you will. The creator's a great guy and I got to make some new friends with fellow collaborators as a result. One of the pages of mine, I actually worked on it Easter Sunday 2007. Kinda appropo.
This was fun. Lots of very short little vignettes of Jesus Christ, smashing his way through hordes of the undead in a vague attempt to find a church full of people who can save the world - but that part's irrelevant, really. It's really just set up for Jesus exploding undead heads and quipping.
It doesn't reinvent the wheel and it isn't as irreverent as half the stuff out there - Robert Kirkman's version of Jesus in Battle Pope is funnier and more blasphemous - but it entertained me and there was some cool art from artists I'd never heard of before. It was interesting to see four different art teams take on the same story towards the end - really goes to show what a difference visual interpretation makes to a story.
This book is difficult to find now, and you can probably skip it unless you really love zombie comics to a ridiculous degree (guilty) but if you happen to come across it somewhere it's worth skimming through. It'll be pretty obvious if it's not for you, but if the title gets a smile out of you then there's more to be found between the covers.
Some people are going to like this comic just because it is Jesus and he is swearing...ha ha? Some people are going to hate it for that same reason. I looked past the obvious 'controversy'. I like that the art changes for each short piece, I like that the pieces are so short, just little tidbits. I thought it was pretty funny and you've got to love that cover art! However this never develops past a gimmick and I'm the kind of girl who loves an actual story!
The Zombie plague ran for 6 days and on the 7nth Jesus kicked a little ass. I like the multiple artist approach to these books. it sort of like a co-hesive anthology or something.
