The Irritability Cure: How To Stop Being Angry, Anxious, and Frustrated … [Kindle Unlimited] — Doc Orman, MD (6 chapters) June 21, 2019
A no-nonsense, clear guide (5 steps) to manage irritability. This is almost a clinical approach (it is written by a MD,) but a lot more down to earth. Thought-provoking analysis of getting to the root of negative emotions that can overwhelm humans.
Only a few negatives I saw in this book. First, in one of the first examples in the book the good doctor has the nerve to bring politics into a topic where it doesn’t below. That one statement really ground my gears. Thankfully, similar examples do not appear again.
Second, the idea of having to carry around an index card to pull out and look at is not something that would work in every situation. It’s a good idea. And may be one to look at every morning and night, but there are several instances where this just would not work. While I do appreciate this approach, and think it would work in a lot of situations, being able to look at the index card as though studying for a final makes the direction feel more clinical than realistic. Still this approach may be helpful for those stuck hard I the angry and anxiety ruts.
I almost gave this a one out of five, but it did offer some information that I believe could be helpful. However, this 70-page "guide" to "curing" one's irritability is not something I would ever recommend to someone who is looking for something in that subject matter.
It consistently repeated itself throughout, and it just felt like it was always leading up to something big that never actually came along. There are no references or links to any sort of science-based research or studies, and the author even tossed in a personal irritation of his that had nothing to do with the topic at hand: "...like the Affordable Care Act that's going to end up costing trillions and trillions of dollars."
There is a grammatical error in the very first sentence of this book, and more that follow, which sort of adds to the credibility of this book. Even the cover is strange and seemingly out of place (a young girl covering her face, other than one eye).
It's too bad I purchased this book online...if I had seen it at an actual book store, I never would have brought it home with me.
Short, easy to read, full of useful information. The book requires some effort on your part. You have to practice what it preaches. If you just read it as an intellectual exercise it will be interesting but you won’t get the value of it.
These days it seems everyone is irritated. It doesn’t take much for that irritation to develop into anger.
This book describes where that is coming from and what you can do about it.
It’s a step by step process that requires some self observation. The benefits of dealing with your irritability are significant. Your health will improve, you’ll have better relationships and you won’t come across as such a d*ck.
Was informative but trying to pinpoint my source of irritability is difficult. “Doc” gave some great examples as far as road rage or dealing with a toddler tantrum and the 5 steps seem they would work well if you are able to identify the source of irritability.
Regardless a good read and I would recommend to others. Well written, clear, and easy to follow.
This was a short and easy read, with a thought provoking, analytical perspective that packs a bit of a punch. I found it very insightful and am looking forward to implementing the strategy described in this book with my family. As a large family, living in a small space, in a developing country, irritability often rears its ugly head.
The book did feel a little pitchy, like one of those infomercials where they spend 27 minutes convincing you of your problem and why you need to spend the money on their magic item, and the last 3 minutes glossing over the actual item being sold. That said, however, the author did not seem to be trying to sell anything to the reader, and the cure he describes is actually quite simple and free.
The cover is kind of strange and generic, making the book feel cheap and (to me) undermining the value of the book itself. I did not purchase this book, but borrowed it through kindle unlimited.
Christian readers may be interested to know that it is not necessarily written from a biblical worldview, at least not in a way that was obvious to me. However, it was very logical, presented a compelling argument, and I did not notice anything that seemed to contradict any of my beliefs.
The one thing that I wish the author would have expounded on is the chapter in which he describes a scene with an angry mother. Although I saw the point he was making, it did strike me as leaning towards an “everything is relative” perspective, which I disagree with.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you can read it for free like I did.
This book was quick and easy to read. I also got it on audible. I think it will require several listens for it to sink in. It had some very good info though.
