Warriors reborn! Speedball and Justice gather a group of young heroes including Sun Girl, Hummingbird, the new Nova and a couple of fresh faces to stop the latest threat to the Marvel Universe! Atlanteans, Inhumans, Morlocks, clones and hundreds of other so-called "superior" beings are living among normal humans, but not everyone is pleased about that. The High Evolutionary has raised an army to combat the evolution of humanity - and the all-new New Warriors are locked in his deadly sights!
The New Warriors are back. Well, at least Speedball and Justice are. Various circumstances bring the heroes together and they decide to become a team. The High Evolutionary has decided all of the offshoots of humanity (mutants, inhumans, atlanteans, etc.) have to be destroyed. It doesn't make the most sense since he's spent his entire life experimenting on humanity but whatever.
This was an enjoyable superhero team book, but nothing particularly special. Pretty much all of the team members were new to me. I recognize Speedball and Nova from way back, though obviously this Nova is new to the job. I recognize the name Vance Astro from the original Guardians of the Galaxy, but, if this is the same character, he’s gone through enough changes as to be totally unrecognizable. I’m also not familiar with the original New Warriors, though I'm aware of the role they played in Marvel’s Civil War.
So why did I pick up this title then? Curiosity mainly. I’m always up for a good superhero yarn. And the chance to investigate what the New Warriors were all about intrigued me. Besides, I’ve always kind of liked Speedball, being a Steve Ditko creation and all (Awkwardly worded. Speedball is the Ditko creation, not I.)
Storywise, this was a pretty typical team book volume one. We introduce the cast, draw them together by giving them a common villain to fight, include an appearance by established heroes who are impressed by the new team's promise, shake well, and serve. Personality wise, I get the biggest kick from Scarlet Spider and Hummingbird, but the entire team is promising. We end on a pretty decent cliffhanger for volume two, and follow that with a solo Scarlet Spider story that is, honestly, pretty forgettable (though it may have more impact for longtime fans of the character.)
I like this book and all, but there's really nothing in it that rises above average. I’ve read better, I’ve read worse.
[3.5] I actually enjoyed this!! I read it for Nova (my second favourite marvel character ever) but fell in love with the rest of this team. I haven’t been interested in the first Civil War since I was younger…but may check it out for the (old) New Warriors’s infamous involvement.
Collected Marvel cards featuring each of them, when I was a little kid.
Enjoyed a lot of books written by Abnett and Lanning, about the original Nova, Richard Ryder.
Watched them cause an explosion at a school that killed innocent men women and Children.
That is as far as my New Warrior experience goes.
This is a new generation of heroes, however, and I really like the concept that Christopher Yost came up with to connect all of these random characters together- each one represents a different type of enhanced human, whether it be a hybrid, a mutant, a demigod, a Super human, etc.
I really want to read more trades featuring this team, and I have been a fan of Yost, especially after his involvement in the Wolverine and the X-men cartoon, and his run on the original Wolverine led X-force.
I'm interested to see where this is going, feels more like a genuine attempt at bringing the new warriors back. It's kinda a nostalgia book but it's done fairly well so far. The characters that I knew were pretty true to character and the new ones were compelling. I like the tone so far, it's irreverent and fun but done in a earnest way.
Really enjoyed it, liked the flashing between characters and scenes at the beginning. Thought the story was a little confusing at point but liked it a lot as it went on. Definitely looking forward to volume 2.
The new Nova brought me here. Was a bit overwhelmed by too many new super-heroes that I'm not familiar with. First New Warriors for me and I'm not sure I'll return.
The New Warriors are back!?!?! I'm not sure if that's good or not. The team was never important to me only a couple of characters. Christopher Yost has done some very good team books in the past and the dialogue here shows that. I've also never been a fan of the antagonist. The art by Marcus To was very good but his fill-ins were a little too cartoony. The series isn't long for this world but still worth reading.
This was pretty good. It was almost as fun as the original New Warriors comic, but it was definitely lacking in characterization. This pools together a bunch of stuff that's been happening around Marvel: the Scarlet Spider and Aracely, the new Sun Girl, Justice and Speedball hanging out with Nova, a new Inhuman. Throw in the High Evolutionary preparing for the arrival of the Celestials and you've got some colorful superhero shennanigans.
So... That were a lot of new characters! There were some enjoyable ones though. I like the new Scarlet Spider, maybe I will pick up his solo series, kinda curious. The story was somewhat confusing... One wanted to eliminate all the humans, and the other one wanted to eliminate all the mutants? And yet they seemed to be working together. Oh well, liked it enough to keep reading :)
Collects New Warriors (2014) issues #1-6 and material from The Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1
I'll be honest. The main reason I wanted to pick up this team book is because I see it as a continuation of the story Christopher Yost started in "Scarlet Spider." It is also a continuation of what's been happening in the recent "Nova" series, however I'm a much bigger fan of the Spider-Clone, Kaine Parker. The Scarlet Spider is good in this book (however, not as good as the Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider was).
This version of the New Warriors is made up of:
-Justice (a mutant) -Speedball (a super-human) -Scarlet Spider (a clone) -Hummingbird (a magically-enhanced human) -Nova (an alien-enhanced human) -Sun Girl (a human using advanced technology) -Water Snake (an Atlantean) -Haechi (an Inhuman)
I felt like Yost brought the team together in a way that felt very natural. Even though the team was almost fully formed by Issue 2, I didn't feel like things were rushed.
I appreciated that Yost isn't ignoring what happened in "Civil War," because the New Warriors were such a big part of the catalyst for that event.
The High Evolutionary is featured as the villain, and there is even reference to a Second Evolutionary War!
A mysterious group has been hunting the flaws of humanity, which according to them are - mutants, superpowers, inhumans, magicians, demigods, Atlanteans, clones... did I miss anything? Anything which goes against the original image of the Celestials' creation of mankind. Discovering that the
Kid Nova + two original members of New Warriors + Scarlet Spider and Hummingbird constantly sassing each other + two kick ass girls of color + an Inhuman who can absorb energy and shapeshift into a dragon. Add in a lot of clever humor, character study, a dash of well-handled eugenics-crazed villains, and a very serious look into depression and self harm.
New Warriors is amazing, funny, and entertaining, with just enough seriousness to ground it. This is definitely a Marvel title to keep your eye on.
I loved this book but it was a little busy with such a large cast and so much going on, for a new reader it might not have gone over well. I liked the mix of old and brand new characters, and the coming together of the team didn't seem forced. Scarlet Spider brings humour to every situation with his grumpy old man act. The illustration was great, even though it was split between two artists with wildly different styles and while it worked okay for me, it might not work for everyone to read a new book that changed artists after three issues.
The Marvel Now re-re-re(?)launch. In a time when Marvel was trying to reinvent the wheel every two or so years, the few good moves they made, like this New Warriors title, got lost in the massive piles of other crap the got published. It gets to a point where a new #1 only means it is a good time for me to quit wasting money on Marvel. And good books like this suffer. Throwing the Warriors into a battle with the High Evolutionary and the Inhumans seemed a little much for this group that wasn't yet a team, but the story played out well and the more I read the more I liked it.
Läsvärd och rätt snyggt tecknad. Men allt är bara för rörigt och det är alltför många huvudpersoner att hålla reda på. Det är som att de vill berätta fem olika historier samtidigt och det är minst tre för många.
Really enjoyed reading about this new team of characters and seeing it come together. Always been a fan of Scarlet Spider and Justice, which is the main reason I picked this up - but I really enjoyed the newer characters as well.
I'm a New Warriors fan from way back. This book gets it right in my opinion. These characters feel like the New Warriors, even though only two of them are from the original cast, though maybe that's for the best. Encourages new types of stories.
