Tracing Your Irish Ancestors

Rate this book

Genealogical research in Ireland has always depended on records that are more fragmented, localised and difficult to access than anywhere else. The internet is changing that. More and more records are coming online and this book is an indispensable guide to what these records are, where they are, and what they mean. This fourth edition of Tracing Your Irish Ancestors embraces online research as an essential part of any Irish family history project. Grenham includes detailed guides to Irish online records throughout the book, discussing the idiosyncrasies of the digital versions of sources and outlining research strategies. The sheer scale of digitisation can make it both easier and more confusing to do research, and makes a guide such as this all the more essential. John Grenham's well-established and detailed guide has thorough descriptions of all the relevant sources and county-by-county reference lists - all expanded, updated and indexed to make the book easier to use than ever before.

This is the third edition of the book published in 2006. Gresham has done a suburb job of directing the reader to sources of information for those tracing their family to Ireland. The first few chapters concentrate on specific types of information eg births, marriages, deaths, census, church records, land records, wills, emigration, newspapers, while the bulk of the book deals with specific counties in Ireland. The upshot seems to be that most records are at the county level, so genealogists need to determine this first in order to continue their search.

I find myself going back to this book constantly. It has to be the most thorough volume on Irish research.

Slightly more dry than psoriasis, but extremely useful for us shanty Irish types as we trace our roots.

While I still feel daunted by sorting out the genealogy on the Irish side, this book assured me that it's not just me. Phew. An essential guide and I'll be getting my own copy.

Seems thorough, I have started my Irish research and I like this book. It not only gives where to find the data but what the data means and some of the history behind the data.

Good information if you have Irish family that you want to gain information about them, then this a good resource. It gives you hints and tips for searching within Ireland itself.
