Janet Anne Haradon Dailey was an American author of numerous romance novels as Janet Dailey (her married name). Her novels have been translated into nineteen languages and have sold over 300 million copies worldwide.
Born in 1944 in Storm Lake, Iowa, she attended secretarial school in Omaha, Nebraska before meeting her husband, Bill. Bill and Janet worked together in construction and land development until they "retired" to travel throughout the United States, inspiring Janet to write the Americana series of romances, where she set a novel in every state of the Union. In 1974, Janet Dailey was the first American author to write for Harlequin. Her first novel was NO QUARTER ASKED.
She had since gone on to write approximately 90 novels, 21 of which have appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List. She won many awards and accolades for her work, appearing widely on Radio and Television. Today, there are over three hundred million Janet Dailey books in print in 19 different languages, making her one of the most popular novelists in the world.
Janet Dailey passed away peacefully in her home in Branson on Saturday, December 14, 2013. She was 69.
A banter filled tale between two warring nemesis, who get trapped in a beach house when their mutual friends tell them to care for it. There is loads of jealousy, attraction, kisses, pushing away, dilemmas, dramaaaaaa and ending in HEA.
I can tell it was purely OK at the best. The chemistry between the main leads was average, and the yearning for no reason drove me nuts. I think there was too much and too little happening at once. Bored me.
He’s such an alpha male. :-) His jealousy, his anger, his rudeness, his wanting to get away from her spell, but at the same time his underlying passion and love really make him another one of Janet Dailey’s heroes. They are such manly men.
But she has tears or screams or has some sort of emotional breakdown in almost every page. It was just too much, therefore not 5 stars.

3 stars -- I hoped to read this and recognize why I read Janet Dailey when I was younger. In the same way, I hoped to capture some of the magic of the very early Harlequins that I also read when I was younger. Instead, I am left feeling a bit horrified by Cole Whitfield's grabbing, gripping, bruising, rough way to communicate his feelings of love. This story sent quite the message to its readers, especially about how a couple should act toward each other or treat each other. I am also a bit horrified that this sort of novel had the potential to shape women's ideas about how they should be treated in a relationship. Lacey Andrews and Cole accidentally wind up house-sitting a beach house at Virginia Beach together, but each person makes up his or her mind about whether or not to stay. I liked the concept. Most of the characters are okay. Cole was just a bit over-the-top. He was the quintessential cigarette-smoking, macho man of the 1970s. Cue The Village People.
I read this just because of the title, a book set where I grew up, I'm intrigued. As I suspected the author picked a few state facts and that was that for conveying the essence of the area and a disappointing location. The area picked was Virginia Beach which isn't what I think of when I think of tidewater Virginia. She did nail the bad traffic, especially in Norfolk and the Tunnel, funny that it was bad back in the seventies, it's only gotten worse 40 years later. Two stars for being a nothing special romance.
Janet Dailey in her Harlequin Americana years. Excellent writer, well plotted story, good characters. Tidewater Lover takes place in Virginia Beach, in her sister's home while her sister and BIL go on vacation, Lacey and Cole (who's a lifelong friend of Cole's family) both end up being asked to house sit.
To hell with the rules!” Cole said. His smile was mocking. “We’ve been here together for only one day and we’re already on the verge of breaking rule number one- no sex.” Crimson flamed through Lacey’s cheeks. Why had she involved herself in this situation? Why had she agreed to share the beach house with Cole? She must have been crazy! She was crazy to stay with him, Lacey told herself. But she just couldn’t leave. She was dangerously, irresistibly attracted to Cole-and they both knew it!
Meh, this was a fairly boring read, and usually I like Janet Dailey stories. This one just lacked oomph somehow, and I didn't get a strong sense that the characters had truly fallen in love.
His smile was mocking. "We've been here together for only one day and we're already on the verge of breaking rule number one--no sex."
