You’ve been given a project to run. You know you need to get it right, but you don’t know what you need to do and in what order to make sure it all runs smoothly and you come out of it looking great. You need Project Management Step by Step . Almost every manager and businessperson finds at some time that he or she has to complete a task that has sufficient complexity and importance that an ad-hoc approach to getting it done is just not enough. Managers in this common situation need the structure and rigour of a project management approach, yet very few managers are formally trained in project management or have the inclination, time or finances to become trained. They need an approach they can feel confidant is sufficiently robust to ensure their success, but also simple enough to be immediately applicable. Project Management Step by Step provides the solution to this problem; a practical and immediate way to become a competent project manager. This is a comprehensive and authoritative guide written and structured in a practical and rapidly applicable style.
Richard Newton is the best selling author of a range of non-fiction books who has recently made the scary jump into fiction writing.
His published works are mostly niche non-fiction books. His first book for everyone, Dream It, Do It, Live It was published 2013. More recently, he published the novella A Touch of Absolution. He's been writing fiction for decades, but this is the first time it has been available to the public.
His books have been translated into 17 languages and won awards, including the Management Book of the Year 2013.
He reads all the time, and for the last few years he has written a review of every book he has read. The reviews reflect his eclectic tastes in reading - good literature, a lot of philosophy, for professional reasons business books, history, travel and mountaineering books - and books about central Asia which is a bit of a personal obsession. But depending on his mood, whim, or the direction of the wind he reads a wide variety that does not fall into any of these categories.
Richard is interested in philosophy, mountaineering, trail running, working and travelling in interesting places, as well as a wide range of music. He works internationally, with home being split between the Cotswolds, UK and the Tatra's, Poland. If you have questions or comments or just feel like chatting get in touch with Richard
Good book from the theoretical and planning. Many good procedures, all terminology explained with good examples and pacing. Not so much the practical application. Also, some weird assumption. That by "motivating" people one can make up for lost time.
Also doesn't deal with what happens if you get to far from a good spot in the project other than go back to the customer. Doesn't do any dispute resolution och trick and tips to deal with inconsistent people other than get them to sign a change from which they will happily do if you even had the time to write one. It feels like this is some sort of idealized world where there is time and money to do all of these stuff before, during and even after a project.
While it did reinforce many of my own observations it's too clean. It assumes all the people behave rationally. Like coming forward if they are stuck with sometimes. Or they don't just think they are done. That people answer emails, or they read the stuff you sent them and not just send a response to get rid of a task. Or the customer is someone you can reach or even have time to have a meeting with. Hell he wants to have a project definition done before any work is started. Most of the time the amount of changes they request completely changes the definition making it useless.
TLDR to clean like a theoretical work who assumes the human, environment or the project itself can be predicted or handled while being naive. That procedure can stop wrecking balls.

Perfect introductory text to project management which leaves you with sufficient surface level knowledge of the discipline. If more ‘introduction to…’ style books followed the formatting and imprint of this book the world would be better for it
