n the second installment of their series, Pete, Inna, Vicky, Aaron and Gary are finally getting their hands dirty with some real pirating work. Being lookout in the midst of a storm isn't a whole lot of fun, but they consider it the most important job on the ship. Rotten Teeth might not...but the Captain repays him for his doubts by sticking him up in the crow's nest til morning, which makes it all worth it.

Early the next morning, Pete wakes up and spies a surprising sight through his spyglass--a Ghost Ship! Rotten Tooth just sets to laughing at them again when they tell him about it, so they go to Clegg instead, because Clegg knows everything. He tells them Ghost Ships are very important and its their job to find out what it wants.

With special permission from the captain to sleep on deck, the kids set about to do just that, trying to save the day yet again. Even when it seems no one believes them, these kids stick to their guns and do what they know is right. Which is lucky for their crew mates, since as of yet, this little crew hasn't been wrong!

This is a very cute series. I think kids will love it, because, hey, who doesn't love pirates?

During a storm at sea, Rotten Tooth orders the pirate kids up to the crow's nest. At the end of their duty shift, they are soaked to their skivvies but proud at having accomplished their first real pirate job. The next morning, Pete wakes up just before sunrise. Using the spy glass, he looks out his porthole and sees a fully-rigged ghost ship. He rouses his mates in time for Gary and Vicky to see it, too. Then, the ship disappears with the sun. The pirate kids tell Clegg about their sighting and find out that ghost ships always appear to ships that are in danger. Pete and the others decide to sleep on deck so they can take turns keeping watch. During the night, the ghost ship pulls alongside, and a plank extends from its deck to the deck of the Sea Rat. The brave pirates-in-training must cross the plank so they can save their ship and their shipmates.

Brian James "Ahoy, Ghost Ship Ahead" was an interesting book. I found it fun and adventurous. I would recommend this book for children of a 2nd grade reading level. It would be a great book to use teaching Fantasy because children know that pirates are not real but it still captures a good sense of adventure and interest. The illustrations of the book really do a great job in helping the reader create an image of the story without overpowering the readers own imagination and creativity. The children on the Sea Rat learn a valuable lesson from Clegg and are set out on their own to save the Sea Rat from facing a disaster. This book would easily keep the readers attention and have them wanting to read the whole series.
