There’s no way I’ll ever get over her when we’re living in the same city, not when everything reminds me of the woman I should have married. I’m back to my old ways, a different woman every night, never alone but perpetually lonely.
Then I meet Austen—and she turns my world upside down. She’s my friend’s sister, and she asks me out the second her brother is out of sight. Right to the point and unafraid to ask for what she wants, there’s no way I can say no, not even for the sake of the bro code.
Turns out, we’re the same person, only looking for one-night stands and no commitments. But a single night isn’t enough for either of us, so it turns into more of an…arrangement. She’s got her baggage but never talks about it, and she knows I’ve got mine but never questions me. It’s become an unspoken rule between us. But the longer I spend time with her, the more I want to break that rule. The more I want to know who hurt her and made her this way. And I even want to tell her about Rae.
Because I actually like this girl…and might want something more than this.

This is Rykers story. We learned about Ryker in the first 5 books, but you really can read this book as a standalone. He lost the girl and moves back to New York to start over. You'll get references to what happened in the previous books but none of that has any bearing on his life back in NY except to give a reason for his no relationship rules.
These books have a very young adult feel to them but I still get suckered into them and all their relationships drama. It took a bit for me to warm up to this couple but dang it, the author has me wanting to beg for the next book like she always does. It's sad really. He waited too long to acknowledge his feelings for Rae and that's why he's starting over but it looks like he's doing the same thing with Austin. I need to see this played out for this couple.
**Ray of New is Book #6 in the Ray Series. You could read this as a standalone, but it’s such a good series I would still recommend reading Books #1 - #5 first**
Ray of New is Ryker’s story. He returns back to his home in New York after suffering a broken heart while living in Seattle running his Father’s company. He had steadfast “no relationship” rules where woman were concerned before his heartbreak, needless to say those are back in full force. His object is clear, meaningless sex and no attachments.
Ryker reconnects with his friend Liam when he returns to New York and the two head out for an evening of fun and drinking. Liam has been avoiding his sister Austen, but he gives in to her and she joins the guys for some adult beverages. The last thing Ryker was expected was to be attracted to Liam’s beautiful, smart, nerdy sister. The two are clearly attracted to one another, but Liam warns Ryker that his sister is a heartbreaker.
As it turns out Austen is suffering from a broken heart as well and swears off relationships. The two start spending more time together and agree there is nothing more to their relationship than sex and fun. Do feelings change?!? Assumptions are made. Could this be the start of something more and neither wants to admit their true feelings?!?!
This is very well written and the drama keeps you engaged. Not to mention the heat between Ryker and Austen could light a house on fire. The storyline is predictable, but that did not at all detract from my love for this story, or the series for that matter. I love the dual POV of Ryker and Austen, listening to their inner struggles where their relationship is concerned. We want to see them both find their HEA. However, it looks like we’ll have to wait until July to find out if that happens!
Title: Ray Of New Author: E. L. Todd Publisher: E.L.T. Series: Ray # 6 Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Rating: Four Review:
"Ray Of New" by E. L. Todd
My Thoughts....
Well, all I can say is this was definitely a continued read from the last series where Ryker and Rae, now friends with him now living in New York. But will happen when he meets back up with his old friend Liam and meets her sister Austen? After all of the warning from Liam about his sister will Ryker be able to handle it all when it comes a head. Does it seem like maybe he has some feeling for Austen? What about the feelings he still had for Rae? What will it take for Austen to finally realize what is right in front of her before it's too late...but kissing Nathan and guess who saw this? I will say she truly got on my last nerves with her thinking process, so I guess the readers will have to wait and see what will come of all of this present situation in the next series. It looks like maybe Ryker is moving on with his old way of life and what about Austen...will she want to get back with her ex? Yes, we are left with another cliffhanger!
I remember Ryker from earlier books and I tried to connect him to this book. I really tried but he's changed a bit. I don't think of him as super hot anymore. Maybe because Austen doesn't fall for him as Rae did. Rae and Ryker were so hot until they weren't. Then Ryker was supreme arrogant ass. He was the bad boy.
Meeting Austen and getting caught up with her seemed genuine. Started out hot and a relationship looking possible. They both teeter on forcing their feelings.
Here Ryker seems normal to average. Gone is his confidence and arrogance. I got a bit bored once the non-relationship got underway. Then book was over, leaving us slapping ourselves for caring for these characters (again). The author gets us sucked back in so good on her.
Ryker has turned into one of my favorite characters ever and it’s great that he’s getting his own story now – even if it takes us across the country and back to New York. He tried to be the good guy with Rae now that they were on better terms, tried to be what she needed and then watched her go back to Zeke and sitting around seeing that every day wasn’t an option. So here we are, back home in NYC where he’s trying to put his life back together.
Ryker goes through the motions here, hanging out with friends, getting back into things, but he still has these intense feeling for Rae that won’t go away. His experience with her means that he’s never going to be in another relationship like that again since he thinks that he messed it up and therefore doesn’t deserve happiness.
It’s not until he’s out with a friend who shockingly has a hot sister that we see Ryker’s hard shell melt. He still has his walls up, but what she wants is what he wants and that means that means that no one will get hurt.
In walks Austen, Liam’s sister and a girl who knows. what she wants in life. She’s strong, independent, a nerd and really attractive. she lost the love of her life because he cheated on her when they were engaged, and the her was her best friend which makes things even more painful. There’s no room for emotions and love in her life now and letting her attraction to Ryker play out in a friends with benefits sort of thing makes all the sense in the world.
We all know that it’s impossible to have a long term fling not. turn into something, so it’s really just a matter of time to see who will cave first and what it will mean to their dynamic. They both start to come to the realization that there’s something more there, but are both afraid to bring it up since they agree to the terms of what they are to each other, and perhaps what happens makes it too late.
Their pasts come to the present and haunt them and make things dicey. Austen sees a text from Rae at night and begins to question what she feels and knows. Ryker knows that Austen’s ex Nathan has been sniffing around and when he walks in on them kissing, that pushes things too far.
Just when admissions were to be made, all things fall apart and now there’s a larger rift and distrust than ever before. I think i need to read on to see how this will fix itself because both of our main characters deserve love and it seems like they’re the ones stopping it.
The series is supposed to be a romantic comedy but I can’t say that’s the case for all the books, not all of them I found to have a comedy anywhere near it, book one for example. So why did I continue to read the series well honestly because I was on the ARC (advance readers copy) list. I read other books by E.L todd and I can tell you one thing she seem to follow the same format for her characters, they are youthful early 20’s and somehow live very soap opera lives.
Rea , oh Rea….she does what every girl should never do she falls not only the bad boy but her brothers best friend as well in one series. Like I said book 1-5 or Light – Heart focus on the relationship between Rea, Ryker and Zeke. While the characters were easy sometimes I found myself questioning their intelligence. While the books were good and I kept reading, You could easily tell what was going to happen before it happened. So the twists through that series really in fact were not really a twist but still written well enough that I still read on. But by the time you reach book 4 it goes from being on a good streak down to plop. Book 4 was just completely mind-boggling and not in a good way at all. The relationship that formed with Rea and Ryker was hot and steamy. But then Zeke happens and it fell flat for me. It just wasn’t there, you know what mean. That sparks. I didn’t feel it. I didn’t even feel it towards the end. I was so team Ryker and E.L. Todd was so set on Zeke and Rea.
There is a lot of back and fourths in these books, like all of them you’ll find it happening at least once in every book. Throughout the book you don’t find your usual run of the mill problems for young adult. Rea is scientist, Rex ( her brother also the comedic aire in the book) won the lotto and bought a crappy bowling alley, Ryker (guy number) was left his father’s company and is now Rea’s boss and Rex’s friend, Zeke (guy number 2) is a freaking doctor and Rex’s best friend, Kayden and Jessie are the best friends of Rea. I don't know how I feel about Ryker. Much like in Rae's story, I don't know how to feel about him. I didn't like him when she was dating him but I did start to like him afterwards when they started hooking up again. This time around I thought I would because he learned his lessons from Rae. But nope. He does something stupid at the end just because his pride got the better of him. For me it just felt like 'why would you do something that won't work. You saw what happened between Zeke and Rae'. There are also times when his controlling side is not something that appeases me like when he acted like a child when he didn't want to use condoms when she did.
Austin is what kept me into the story. I liked the dynamic of her character and how confident she was with herself. She did have her insecurities which appeared every so often, but she knew what she wanted and didn't compromise just because Ryker wanted her too. The only thing I didn't like was the way her twist was just thrown in there without really any kind of development before or after it. I would have liked to have seen more there.
The best part about the story was the back and forth between Ryker and Austin. You could feel the comfortable feeling between them and how they made each other (and us) laugh. Those scenes were cute and enjoyable especially because you know that they are going to end up together in the end.
The romance scenes (i.e. the money scenes) were hotter then the last series. Both of these characters are comfortable in their own skin and are not shy about asking and taking what they want. It's explosive and and combustion when they are together. Way past just sparks. This is what made the story the most enjoyable.
While I did have some reservations about Ryker and this book, I am going to finish the series. I am interested to see how it all ends and how Ryker tries to win Austin back. I sure home she makes him work for it.
*I was gifted this ARC from the author and are freely giving my review of it*
If you've read the 5 first books in this series you know this is Ryker's story. He meets a women he can't resist but she don't want a relationship so they start with a one night stand. And then things just progress from there.
What I really liked in this book was that Ryker in some ways have evolved emotionally. What I don't like about this series is the intense feelings a person can have for two different persons, it gets to emotional but then again it's how it can be in real life. I love all the emotions at the same time so I'm a little conflicted. In the beginning of the book I was thinking: why, why, why......don't you just tell her brother that you want to date his sister!!!!!!!!!
I like the way this author writes, it's easygoing and with lots of dialogues so I can just sit back and let the story be taken into my mind without no worries.
The characters are well written and the feelings are very good described. I think all the reflections going on in their minds is one of the things I appreciate most in this authors books. It makes me see the characters as real persons.
The love scenes are as usual well written and with much intensity, but sometimes I get the feeling if the story of Ryker only contained half the love scenes it would have been enough with one book.
Warning ⚠️ The book ends in a cliffhanger.....sort of...... for me, I rarely like a book to end the way it did but this time.....many because that allows me to make my own happy ending. It's just a feeling I got in the end that made me accept this ending. In some peculiar way this ending was satisfying but also not satisfying.
This was a 5, not solid but still 5 wobbly stars ✨
Ryker… still making the same mistakes. Why do the men do that? Get crushed and their automatic response is to fall into another woman… literally.
But he needs something, his life is absolutely empty. Seemingly no relationship with his family. I find it very unattractive that he doesn’t work, or doesn’t want to work… especially in a place like the US. Everything is corporate. Austen assumed he’d worked hard. But I’m pretty sure in the beginning of the series, it was established it was just inheritance/trust fund, something of the sort.
Love that she made Ryker work for it in the beginning when he rejected her twice. I just hope now she distances herself from him now he’s done this. Personally I think she should forgive Nathan. There’s clearly still a spark. Past the notion that “once you love someone. You’ll always love them.”
I think on Rae’s part. I just find it disrespectful when you still speak your ex, when you have a partner. Just my opinion on that.
I know this is completely double standard too. And I’m a woman saying this. When a man is sleeping around. You’re a man whore. When a woman is. You’re just easy. I’d never want to be thought of as that.
As for Austen’s relationship with Liam. Being adopted. She doesn’t feel like his sister. If she’s 23 and he’s 30. He’s 7 years older. Meaning when she was adopted at age 11. He was already 20. I’m sure he cares about her so much and loves her. But I can see the way that relationship would be on that front maybe to him.
In the end. They’ve both been hurt in the exact same way again. And almost done it to themselves.
I just love this series! Right from book 1, I was Team Ryker. I wanted him and Rae together throughout the whole series ... but that never happened, so I was so glad that he was getting is own book. I really didn't want to like Austen ... well because I was still hoping for Ryker and Rae. But I became to really like Austen ... in fact I ended up feeling sorry for her and hoping that if Ryker can't be with Rae, then I wanted him to be with Austen.
Ryker and Austen are two broken souls ... they loved and lost! Austen's fiancee slept with her best friend and then he married her, breaking Austen's heart ... and well you know Ryker's story. Ryker and Austen start a "friends with benefits" relationship ... no, not a relationship because neither one of them is going to be doing that again! They set out rules for this arrangement and break them one by one. This is a very emotional journey and then there are the sex scenes ... well let's just say that E L Todd sure knows how to write steamy HOT scenes! As for the end of the book ... WOW! I was not expecting that and that's all I'm gonna say. You'll have to read it to find out. I can't wait for Ray of Life - Ryker's continued story! It doesn't come out until July ... it's gonna be really hard to wait until then to find out the answers to so many questions. I highly recommend not just this book, but the entire series ... you won't be disappointed.
I graciously received an ARC copy courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review.
„Ray of New” is a sixth book in Ray series by E.L. Todd.
To fix his broken heart Ryker moves back to New York. He needs to forget about Rae and move on with his life. And what’s better cure than a hot fuck-buddy who isn’t interested in commitment? Austin is set in her ways - she doesn’t do relationships, doesn’t get attached. Ryker is still dealing with his feelings to Rae and Austin is still in love with her ex-fiance. Those two are broken, but maybe they can fix each other?
What happens when two broken people meet and start to spend a lot of time together? I’ll tell you! An awesome story! I loved that one. I was anxious to read Ryker’s story after what happened between him and Rae. I was glad to see that he’s slowly moving on with his life after heartbreak. I felt sorry for him when Rae chose Zeke, because I always liked Ryker a little bit more :) Ryker is a great guy, sure he has made some mistakes in the past, but under that cold exterior, there’s a sweet, loyal and caring guy. Plus, he’s extremely sexy. As for Austin - she’s a great character - strong, independent, she knows what she wants. All in all, I adored this story. Plot kept me engaged and I was never bored. Just another great book by E.L. Todd. The ending broke my heart a little bit and I can’t wait to read next part! Recommended!
An awesome book to start a new series. I couldn’t understand the book when I first started reading but it became clear what was going on by the end of the third chapter. E.L. has taken empathy and the understanding of human nature and built the characters around the plot so that they intertwine seamlessly together. E.L. is one of the most talented writers. The next book of this series is 325 First Fights. Bree was in love with Cypress and had planned a surprise birthday party for him with her sister and friends. She went to get him at his apartment and let herself in with the key he had just given her. She found him having sex with his ex-girlfriend. It decimated her for months. Will Bree be able to forgive Cypress for cheating on her? Is there any way Cypress can regain Bree’s trust? What happens in Bree’s sister’s and friends lives? Grab the book and don’t forget it takes about 4 chapters to figure out what is happening but then it gets so interesting you can’t put it down. The book is full of sexy scenes, lust, twist, jealousy, patience, confusion, and love. I can’t wait to read 325 First Fights. You can preorder it now. I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
While this is book 6, I feel it can be read as a standalone, even if I do recommend the other books since the characters are mentioned in this one.
While Ryker didn't get the girl in the earlier book in this series you can only hope he will get her this time. And HER is his good friends little sister Austen. One thing that really stands out in this book is that Austen is a lot like Ryker was in the earlier books, and by this I mean, she doesn't want a relationship, she wants to just have one-night stands but something about Ryker makes her come back for seconds, and thirds.
Both Ryker and Austen come off as non-committal, and yet it really is just Austen to me that is that way. Ryker seems to want more, and yet both he and Austen were hurt in the past. Him by Rae (and yet he does accept all the blame) and her with her ex-fiancé. I love the closeness they get quickly and it is no wonder they hit it off, they are just perfect together.
The side characters, Liam, Madeline, etc all make this book also, you can't help but love the dynamic of all the friends. Another great book by EL.
If you remember Ryker from the previous books, you know the arrogant, cocky, hot as heck guy that Rae fell in love with. Here, we get a different Ryker. He is less sure of himself, after all, Rae didn’t pick him, and so we get a man who is more subdued and reluctant to just put himself out there. This definitely makes for some interesting interactions with Austen when he meets her.
She is also coming off a bad relationship, so jumping into another one is not at the top of her list. Meeting Ryker is something she sees as a way to have fun and they agree to get together, no strings attached. We all know how those things work out, right?
The emotions in this book reminded me of what Rae went through in her journey, yet I hope that Ryker is not steered in that direction. Things are usually different for guys, and I hope that’s what happens here. I enjoyed seeing Ryker more emotionally mature, but I can tell he still has some more growing up to do and Austen will not make things easy for him.
I can’t wait to see what EL Todd gives us in the rest of this story.
So this begins Ryker's new life back in NY. We're led to believe that he is back to his old tricks, but this doesn't resonate with me. How he was changed by his relationship with Rae leaves him different. At least on the inside, it does. His friend Liam's sister, Austen, changes all that. They meet, are attracted, after some minor mishaps agree to be fuck buddies with rules. No feelings. Ever. Right. Because I LOVE how this woman writes, I am going to cut her some slack and hope she doesn't take Ryker on the excruciating emotional roller coaster we went through with Rae in the previous 5 books. I went along for that ride and although I'm glad I did, I don't want Ryker to go through that. Since he's a guy, he probably won't. One can only hope. I'm going to keep reading these books either way. They're entertaining and have some of the hottest sex ever in them. That alone is enough of a reason.
When I say that Ryker drives me absolutely crazy. The way he pushes off the potential of a relationship because of his fears, drives me mad. I find myself screaming at the book, for him to wake up and TRY to want better for himself, instead of pushing himself away from happiness at his first mistake. This is how he lost Rae and looks like how he will lose everyone after him. At this point, I am willing to tell E.L. Todd to forget about his happily ever after because he needs personal healing first. He puts himself in similar situations, expecting different results. SMH. OMG I don't know if I can take anymore. Poor Rae did a number on this man, and continuing this relationship with him (friendship or not) is not healthy. If she knew how much he reflected on that, then she would hopefully fall back and let him live.
Of course, it is a good book. It's a page turner. I can't wait for the next one.

CLIFFHANGER
Possible Spoilers:
This is Ryker's story.
Ryker meets Austen, his friend's sister, and they start a friends with benefit relationship. Unfortunately, Ryker is still hung up on Rae and Austen still has feeling for cheating ex-fiancé, Nathan which makes there relationship shaky. Now for grown adults who are supposedly mature they never have real conversations and naturally there are misunderstandings between the couple. Ryker made some assumptions about Austen and Nathan which to be fair, he had some merit to react but his reaction was a little extreme. As for Austen the girl dug herself into a hole and well now they both have to figure a way out.
Just in my own opinion, Nathan is turd and he didn't deserve the second chance.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book picks up Ryker's story post Rae. I found that I like this Ryker better than when he was with Rae. I felt like he had grown up a bit and was ready to move on with his life. Then he meets Liam's sister Austen. She is in the same boat as Ryker and together I felt that they help each other get through the aftermath. They didn't need to talk but to just let them loose themselves in one another. Sometimes in life we need a distraction to actually take that ache away from the heart. However it's what you end up with once you open your eyes.........is it worth opening your heart once again, or should you close your heart to never love again? Either way let the book lead you towards their decision.
I am a huge fan of this series and was excited that Ryker got his own story after Rae moved on with Zeke. This story finds Ryker back in New York hanging with his friend Liam. When me met Liam's sister the attraction was instant. Ryker and Austen began a "friends with benefits" relationship becasue each of them had been hurt by someone else. Will thier feelings change? Can they remain detached to thier feelings or will things get messy?
Love is a hard to justify. When Ryker assumes that Austen is back in a relationship he lashes out in the way only he knows how. To change up the game. I cannot wait to read the next story to see what happens. I was provided an advance copy for my impressions of the story, I loved it of course.
To say that Ryker has terrible timing would be an understatement. As far as men go, he has grown from his past with Rae, but he still has a lot to learn. Why do men just decide to jump in the sack as a reaction to almost any situation is beyond me. I guess the same goes for some women, Austen for example. When she gets her heart crushed she decides to hit it and quit it. Just enough to get her needs met then move on, until Ryker she never went back for seconds. But when a sexy, sex god offers you unlimited pleasure what's a girl to do. We have two broken people here, can they find their way to heal each other? I sure hope so. That cliffhanger. ....oh man I hope the next book comes soon.
Oh Ryker, when will you learn? Finally we get Ryker's story after his heartbreak at the hands of Rae, but will be get his happily ever after? Ryker meets the headstrong and willful Austen now that he is back in New York. He is instantly taken by her looks and personality. So he of course decides to do the friends with benefits arrangement. The feelings develop over time, but this is Ryker, he is going to screw up and you get left with a cliffhanger her that is only partially his fault. I am totally addicted to and loving this story!
I love this series! Ray of New grabbed me from the start and I didn't want to put it down, just like the other books in the series! Ryker and Austen have off the charts chemistry and their friends for sex only relationship turns into so much more without them even realizing it. I love Ryker and want him to find happiness after his heartbreak of losing Rae. Just when things are looking good for Ryker and Austen, some twists and turns are thrown in and things go downhill. The ending killed me and I can't wait for the next book!
I was so excited and thrilled for Rykers story! I knew when he bowed out for Rae, he showed not only his maturity but just how much he could love someone. Not to mention, he deserved to be loved too! Austen us a spitfire. The mothe to his flame and he is infatuated. He may think that what they have is "just" casual and he will only ever love Rae, but fate and Destiny mixed together is an electric bomb that will drop him on his a**. This series is beyond my favorite series! Fantastic!!!!
Finally getting Ryker's story, and I couldn't have been more excited. With having his heart broken, Ryker moves back to NY and meets Austen. They hit it off right away but Ryker is hesitant because Austen is his friend's sister. I really like how Austen & Ryker are together, they just fit but both are trying to get over there exes. Will they be together or will there exes keep them apart?
I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book
This series will blow your mind. The characters you can't help but have a love hate relationship with. The emotion flies from the pages and consumes you. The writing is perfect but the cliff hangers will make your hair fall out. You can help but want more it's an addiction you have no control over. I suggest you get reading because you won't want to miss a second. My heart hurts as I sit here waiting for the next book. Enjoy!!!
Ray Of New is book 6 in the Ray Series. This is Ryker's story. Oh my ever loving God! I love me some Ryker! He has been my favorite since book 1. Dark and broody... and forever the player! Ryker has moved back to New York to start his life over, without Rae. There are lots of new characters and all kinds of new twists and turns. Austen is a great addition to the mix. She is the female version of Ryker! These two are explosive together. I can't wait for Ray Of Life!
ch an ass in the other books. Until he met Rae & he got scared of his feelings for her. In this book he moves back home to New York from Seattle. Where he meets up with his friend Liam. He meets Liam's sister Austen & they have an instant chemistry. After some flirting & rejection, they finally decide to be friends with benefits. At some point during their situation thinks start to change. They realize they both want a relationship but a misunderstanding changes things. I received this arc for an honest review.
Riker returns to New York and begins a relationship with a young woman who seems to have the same values as he does in that no relationship only sex. Sadly the situation of the two of them is very similar to Riker situation with Ray, we are by there’s an ex that gain status and he ends up alone. Again people not sharing how they feel only ends up to losing those they truly love.
