Series: Mac McClellan Mystery - Book 2 Publication Date: November 11, 2014 Publisher: Seventh Street Books ISBN-10: 1616140097 ISBN-13: 978-1616140090 Genre: Mystery/Intrigue Print Length: 250 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Mac is warm and entertaining. He becomes an old friend with the turn of every page, the connection is there. Kate is more aloof, almost hanging in the background, I liked her but the connection was lacking, more development would have made a world of difference in my lukewarm response to her. Mac's newfound career as a PI is interesting to witness as he sheds his military career and ways to the background. His humor will make you smile.
The narrative is layered creating tons of action, never dull. The momentum builds as the story progresses and each layer is peeled away. The plot is rather intricate adding more substance to the action filled exciting barebones narrative.
Deadly Ruse is fine as a standalone, Helms provides enough backstory filling in the gaps in the event Deadly Catch was overlooked. Fast paced read with lots going on, recommend for your TBR.
Deadly Ruse is Book II of the Mac McClellan Mystery series. These novels will stand alone.
What do a blown up boat, a crashed airplane, sparkling “ice” and drugs have in common…Mac McClellan.
Mac is a former Marine and after helping to solve a crime in Deadly Catch, Book I, he has decided to become a Private Investigator.
Kate is his girlfriend. On a date with Mac, a ghost enters her life. She is sure her ex boyfriend has risen from the dead. She doesn’t realize how lucky she was to have escaped when she did.
The case of Dead Man Walking will be Mac’s introduction to becoming a private investigator. It is not a dream, but more like a nightmare come back to haunt Kate and it could have deadly consequences..
Mac lives in a camper in the Florida Panhandle. Shades of Rockford Files come to mind and I am very familiar with the territory. I love when the characters cross the same bridges and drive the same streets I have traveled.
Mac plows through interviews, quickly getting the hang of it, learning a little finesse one interview at a time.
Deadly Ruse is a twisted web of lies and deceit. We have a lot of suspects and intrigue. E Micheal Helms keeps the mystery and suspense building as we travel the Gulf Coast looking for answers. The mystery stretches from Georgia, through Florida and into South America. Who is alive? Who is dead? And why? I did need a flow chart to help me separate the good from the bad, but it all comes together in the end.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Deadly Ruse by E Michael Helms.
I picked this novel up to “just read a couple of chapters” before bed one night. The next thing I knew the sun was coming up and it was time for work. Helms jumps right into this story from the first sentence and doesn’t let up. It’s like being back with an old friend. He had me mesmerized, trying to unravel the mystery right up until the very last moment.
Helms has an approachable, inviting style. I love the way that he writes in the first person, allowing the main character to tell you his story as if he were sitting right next to you. The short chapters increase the intensity of the novel. Also, even though this novel ties in with the first in the series, it could easily be read as a standalone for those looking to start the series here.
Helms has developed a cast of characters that really come to life. I loved how their emotions shine through and affect their actions. They were all so real. The local dialect and slang shine through in the dialogue, enhancing this even further. The mix and intermingling of personal and professional relationships was fascinating. It was completely realistic yet also quite complex.
I loved the first novel in this series but absolutely adored this one. I couldn’t put it down. It’s a fast paced, easy, enjoyable read that was a delight to read. I know that I, for one, and dying for more Mac McClellan mysteries.

Have you ever seen a ghost? Well, according to Mac’s girlfriend, Kate Bell, it wasn’t a ghost. She really saw her ex-boyfriend, Wes Harrison, who has supposedly been dead for twelve years. At first Mac tries to reason with her – maybe it was just someone who resembled Wes — but she was sure it was Wes. The bodies were never found for Wes and two of his buddies who’d been in a boating accident. Mac McClellan agrees to check into it. He has a couple of contacts with the police. He is a retired Marine who began working for Frank Hightower (Kate’s Uncle) of Hightower Investigations. He enrolled in an online certified PI training institute to become a licensed investigator under Frank. Their home is in the Florida panhandle, but the investigation takes Mac to an orphanage in Texas where they begin to unravel Wes and his buddies. In the meantime, Kate began checking into some stuff she kept belonging to Wes. She finds diamonds; some are uncut. The more they dig into his past, the more complicated matters get – and the more dangerous. Kate is involved in a car accident – except it wasn’t really an accident. After someone takes a shot at Mac, he talks Kate into leaving until the mystery is solved.
This is second in the series following Deadly Catch. This can be read as a standalone. I didn’t feel I was missing any information and I’ve not read Deadly Catch yet. I liked Mac’s humor and I liked watching him ‘grow’ into his PI role. The author gives enough of a backstory that you feel like you know Mac. I didn’t, however, feel any closeness to Kate. It’s not that I didn’t like her; I just didn’t feel I knew her as well. The twists in the story become a little complicated. The pacing is great in the first half and then again at the end as it all ties well together. I rated Deadly Ruse at 3.5 out of 5.
There are two kinds of great detective stories in my opinion. The all knowing detective who figures everything out and makes you feel foolish at the end, and the bumbling amateur who happens on clues by accident. I can't pick a favorite but it is fun to mix it up with some of both. I would classify Deadly Ruse into more of the second category. While not exactly bumbling, Mac comes by his information mostly through the good will of others and happenstance. Mac is a well drawn and finely fleshout character with plenty of backstory. You know where he stands on every issue. He's not afraid to go the tough route if he has to even though his body might tell him otherwise. Other than Mac, most of the other characters descriptions revolve around tight form fitting clothes and body descriptions. This actually helps to further immerse the reader into Mac's mind and see the story from his perspective. Being the first Mac McClellan book I have read, I didn't know what to expect going in. This is easily a stand alone reader. While not a long book, the story is well drawn out and doesn't involve other story arcs to distract from the main plot. The plot itself is a little complicated and without Mac's friends, I don't think he would have figured this one out. There is a lot of reaching and guessing, but that makes this story feel more real. I look forward to seeing this character progress through subsequent books and possible turn into a real PI.
This is a fun private investigator mystery. I like the protagonists, Mac McClellen and his girlfriend Kate Bell and to me that's important. It also takes place in the Florida panhandle with which I am reasonably familiar and I think that's fun. Mac is a retired Marine sergeant and circumstances have pushed him into the PI business. In this yarn Kate is sure she has seen her ex boyfriend in a local theater. Mac is not so sure about this because the man allegedly died in a boating accident ten years prior. A curious couple like our heroes can't let a mystery like that go unsolved so….and away we go. I chose this story as the result of reading the positive review posted by my Goodreads friend Pamela. Thanks, Pamela.
Mac McClellan returns in another action-packed mystery full of intrigue and suspense
Kate Bell is taken by surprise by a ghost from her past- literally. While leaving the theater on a date with Mac, she is convinced she has seen her former boyfriend, Wes. The only problem is, he died twelve years ago in a boating accident.
Or did he? The more Mac investigates, the more the story begins to stink, and he soon finds himself embroiled in a maze of deception of epic proportions. Who exactly was Wes Harrison? Kate soon learns that he was not the man she thought she knew, and when they find a large bag of diamonds in Wes’ belongings, Mac knows they’re in way over their heads. He calls on the aid of Kate’s uncle, a private eye who takes Mac under his wing as a PI in training and helps him find the answers he needs.
Things really start to heat up when Mac is paid a surprise visit by the sexy yet mysterious Dakota, cousin to Sargent J.D. Owens, who appears to know more about what’s going on than she should. After her tips begin to pan out, Mac wonders just who exactly she is, and whether can she be trusted (and is it just Mac’s imagination, or is she following him?).
The closer Mac gets to the truth, the greater the danger he finds himself in. When someone makes an attempt on Kate’s life, Mac knows he must be close to the answer, but can he figure it all out before its too late?
Yet another great book from author E. Michael Helms. Fans of Deadly Catch will not be disappointed with this second book in the Mac McClellan Mystery series, which can also be read as a stand-alone. Full of familiar characters, as well as some colorful new ones, Deadly Ruse is a fast-paced mystery that will keep you on your toes. Highly recommended!
I have received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Mac McClellan is a retired Marine living in Florida with his girlfriend, Kate Bell, where they are living a quiet, uncomplicated life. Uncomplicated until she saw her ex-boyfriend, Wes Harrison, who has been dead for twelve years. Mac doesn't believe she actually saw Wes and tries to make her see that it was probably someone who looked like him. But Kate was positive it was him. Mac has been playing around at investigating so when Kate introduces him to Frank Hightower of Hightower Investigations, a family friend, Mac is thrilled. Then Frank offers to sponsor Mac and pay for his courses to earn his PI license in exchange for Mac working for him on the Harrison case. Mac jumps at the chance. As Mac gets further into the investigation he finds out Kate still has some of Wes's belongings which include some uncut diamonds.
This is an edge of your seat type of story where something is always happening like Kate's car being tampered with, causing a terrible crash, sending her to hospital and Mac getting shot at. I loved the parts with Mac finding out about diamond smuggling and drug dealers.
I really liked Mac and learning more about him and his past but I didn't feel the same connection with Kate. Don't get me wrong, I liked Kate but just didn't think her character was as well developed. I did feel sorry for Mac trying to be a civilian after 24 years as a Marine. He had such a hard time remembering not to give orders to people but just ask them to do what he wanted.
Even though Deadly Catch came before Deadly Ruse, you don't need to read it first because there is enough back story filling in the previous people/events that you can easily follow along.

Mac McClellan is a retired Marine enjoying an uncomplicated lifestyle with girlfriend Kate Bell in the Florida panhandle. While on a date with Mac, Kate sees Wes Harrison, a former boyfriend who’s been dead twelve years. Mac wants to be supportive but is not sure how to help her. When Kate introduces Mac to long-time family friend, Frank Hightower of Hightower Investigations, Mac receives a proposition to work for Frank while taking courses to earn his PI license. Frank offers to be Mac’s sponsor and pay for his courses in exchange for work on the Harrison case. It doesn’t take Mac long to decide this might be a good deal for him. As Mac’s investigation delves into Harrison’s background, Kate finds a cache of diamonds among some old items of Harrison’s and suspects that he might be trying to find her. The stakes rise when Kate’s car is tampered with and someone takes a shot at Mac on a dark night in front of his trailer. The trail of clues lead Mac from uncovering diamond smuggling to drug dealers to murder before leading to the Palmetto Royale Casino & Resort. Not realizing that his cover has been blown, Mac books a room at the resort, thus putting his life on the line as he attempts to solve the case before someone else dies. Deadly Ruse is the second book in the Mac McClellan Mystery series. Characters are believable and very likable. Even the bad guys have complicated pasts, which adds to the interest level in the book and helps to counterbalance the somewhat predictable ending. While a bit slow in parts, the action overall is moves quickly.

“Deadly Ruse: A Mac McClellan Mystery” By E. Michael Helms has a plot that is as tight as a night of bondage. The storyline swirls wickedly enticing the reader into deep involvement in the solution of why Mac’s girlfriend, the fetching and fiery Kate, has seen her long dead lover with the eerily mismatched color eyes alive and well as she and Mac exit a movie theatre. Mac does not see him because he bumps into his busty, red-haired companion and his eyes are drawn to her abundant cleavage. Kate insists the man is alive, a bag of glittery diamonds is found and they are off and running. There are plenty of hot ladies in “Deadly Ruse” and in refreshingly unstereotyped portrayals. They do unexpected things. The reader gets vicarious thrills seeing what a Marine veteran would do in a number of dire situations involving lots of fighting and gunplay as well as strategizing his moves as he would in battle. Some of the same characters populate “Deadly Ruse” as they did in “Deadly Catch” and the reader sees how they have grown and developed. Sheriff Pickron and Mac face off like two bulls who grudgingly tolerate each other as the tale unfolds. Scenes of Mac resisting seduction are as interesting as a consummated steamy tryst. As the reader comes to the end of the book it is like eating the last piece in a bag of Hershey’s kisses. OK, I’m addicted. Helms will have to make more of these mysteries available. It is unfair to leave an addict with no fix. When I think of all the luscious goodies I replaced with reading “Deadly Ruse” and the previous “Deadly Catch” I have to thank Helms again for saving me from all those calories. All the fun and no guilt. MJ Payne
Throw together maybe-dead, maybe guilty of something characters in a twisting, turning plot and you get a "...damn stewpot... so full it was in danger of spilling over" in E. Michael Helms' second and newest Mac McClellan mystery. If it's possible, this second installment in the series is even more intriguing than the first.
When Mac's lady friend Kate is sure she's seen an old beau -- a supposedly dead old beau -- Mac can't help but investigate. Like the fisherman Mac is, he casts and reels, and pulls all manner of odd things in, but the more he fishes, the more tangled the plot lines get. Any other fisherman would cut the line, but Helms -- through Mac -- patiently tugs each line, finds the knots, and eventually straightens things out.
It's a deft touch, and under the pen of any other writer you'd find loose ends. Not so here. With so much coming at you, you'll wonder how Helms can possibly untangle a line knotted with drugs, diamonds, and charity. But he does.
With so much going on in "Deadly Ruse," it's hard to imagine what could possibly await Mac McClellan next time around. But given this early trend, it's sure to be an intriguing episode in Mac's life -- and a great mystery for us. If you haven't started the Mac McClellan series, get going. You don't have to have read "Deadly Catch" to appreciate "Deadly Ruse," but if you read "Catch" first, you'll have insight into some of the references that will add to your experience.
Mac may not have figured out what he's doing with his life for the future yet, but he's prepared to enjoy the present with Kate. What starts out as a pleasant night out starts a journey into Kate's previous relationships back in Destin. He gets to meet the rest of the family, including old family friends, but not exactly the way he planned. Unfortunately, instead of bringing them closer, the more information Mac is able to come up with, the farther Kate seems to drift. Romance aside, the more information increases the risk to both of them.
Mac has to deal with much ambiguity and temptation, but manages to stay with the goal - find Wes Harrison if he is still alive and not a ghost. He's the strong hero type - ex-marine so what else would be expected? He's also human and has a sense of humor, very likable despite a tendency to order people around.
The story is well written and moves quickly - I was hooked from the start and stayed up well past my bedtime to see how it ended. The multiple twists and turns make it hard to be sure the real scams and who Mac should or shouldn't trust. I'd read the first in the series, DEADLY CATCH, and I was glad to see Bo and JD back, along with some of the others. Dakota definitely adds some spice to the mix. At the same time, DEADLY RUSE could easily be read as a stand alone. I'll be waiting for #3 in this series for sure!

Deadly Ruse: A Mac McClellan Mystery by E. Michael Helms
Mac's (McClellan) girlfriend Kate, thinks she sees her (previous) boy friend Wes. But Wes allegedly died twelve years prior in a boating accident. Mac is not so sure, he travels to Texas to unravel this mystery.
Once there he uncovers a diamond smuggling ring, people end up dead and this "mysterious sighting" turns into something much bigger than Mac anticipated. Mac begins to wonder if Kate has any ties to this crime, it all seems to revolves around her former friends.
A fast paced thrilling murder mystery. I really liked Mac, a tough former marine. The story is original, with twist, turns, secrets and surprises.I was at the edge of my seat, anticipating the next surprise. I feel that murder/mystery/suspense lovers will enjoy Deadly Ruse: A Mac McClellan Mystery by E. Michael Helms
(I received this Arc copy in exchange for an honest review)
Deadly Ruse is the second of the Mac McClellen mysteries by E. Michael Helms. I honestly loved this book as much as I liked the first. the second mystery brings back some known characters from the Deadly Catch. Returning to Parkerville, the mystery of Kate’s lost boyfriend goes much further than anyone realized. The boyfriend’s reappearance tests Kate and Mac’s relationship. Mac cannot understand how Kate can believe her ex is alive after more than 10 years. When murder attempts on Kate and Mac’s lives begin, Mac has to take her claims seriously. The introduction of Dakota temporarily throws the reader into another direction. It is unclear where this young lady stands. Her motive are discovered in a clever ending. Deadly Ruse keeps the adventure moving until the last pages of the book. Helms masterfully creates a mystery you do not want to put down. I would recommend this book if you enjoy fast paced mysteries with colorful, diverse characters. Thank you, Michael for another great story.
Deadly Ruse: A Mac McClellan Mystery by E. Michael Helms is a real page turner. Make sure you have your seatbelt on because you are going on a ride like no other. Once you open the book, it will grab you, hold you down tightly and you will watch those pages turn and turn and turn some more until you get to the last one. As you read you have some twists and turns coming at you and all you can say is, "OMG." This book is a fast paced action thriller. Where can you read about a retired marine, private eye, sexy women, whiskey, drugs, diamonds, casinos, and the good ole' South in a crime novel? Mac's girlfriend Kate thinks she has seen her old boyfriend who supposedly died years ago. But is he really dead? Mac sets out to find out. Dakota shows up the help in the investigation with Mac. But who really is Dakota? Make sure you have time to read this book ... I read it in one sitting, it was that good. I gave this book 5 stars but which I could have given it more. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I look for more from E. Michael Helms.
E. Michael Helms has done it again with another fast paced, action packed thriller. Deadly Ruse by E. Michael Helms will grab you by the seat of the pants and not let you put this book down.
I really liked the way he continued to develop his characters from his book Deadly Catch in this book. You could watch each of them mature and grow into their parts as the book progressed. I found them to be very believable and easy to identify with.
E. Michael Helms is an excellent storyteller. His style made the book come alive and easy to get involved in. The story was well developed and the fast pace of it made for a great read. I loved all the different plot twist and how they came together for a great finish.
I really enjoyed reading Deadly Ruse by E. Michael Helms and I highly recommend this book.

Missed ya Mac. I'm addicted to this series - read the entire book in three sittings, couldn't put it down.
When leaving a showing of the classic movie Dead Men Walking, Kate spots an ex boyfriend - a much altered ex boyfriend - who happens to be dead. As the story unfolds, Kate's past and present intertwine and Mac is drawn into the action and danger. The story action ranges between Georgia and Florida as past and present collide in an explosive finale.
The action in this book begins on page one and never stops. It is literally impossible to find a calm place to break off the read and do something else, like sleep. It's a great book, highly recommended. Keeps you guessing until the end. Can't wait for Mac three.
This is the second book in the series. Mac is studying to legally become the private investigator he's been acting like. His sleuthing endangers not only his life but other lives precious to him. His girlfriend, Kate Bell, involves him in this mystery when she thinks she's seen a ghost. Wes Harrison, her old boyfriend who she thought died years ago in a boating accident, is not only alive, but he is involved in some pretty shady activities. Kate and Mac begin work to find out what's really up in northwest Florida when Kate suddenly loses control of her car and ends up in the hospital.
Mac must find out the truth before he ends up dead, or worse someone he cares about dies.
Ghosts of boyfriend's past? Check. Diamond smuggling? Check. A Texas orphanage? Casinos? Check and check. Yes, all the seemingly random elements that make up a satisfying Mac Mcclellan are present yet again in Deadly Ruse. But it all begins when Kate Bell, Mac's girlfriend, spots her ex-boyfriend outside a movie theater. Only problem is, he's been dead for twelve years. Mac, at his girlfriend's insistence, looks into things, and is quickly drawn into another complicated puzzle to solve. . . if he can live long enough, that is. This, like all the books in the Mcclellan series, is great fun. The first person narrator is charming, tough, funny, and I root for him whole-heartedly every time. Quickly becoming one of my favorite P.I. series. . .highly recommended.
Mac McClellan is enjoying his retirement from the Marines. He and his Lady friend Kate are just leaving the cinema when Kate is shocked by seeing someone she thought was dead. Kate is so insistent that Mac promises to investigate. He has a few contacts with the local police. The more he discovers the bigger and more dangerous the mystery gets.
A really good crime mystery, with lost of twists and turns. Plenty of action ,and some humour. The hero is modest and easy to like. The secondary characters promise us more good stories in the future. I will certainly look for more.
Deadly Ruse is a mystery that dives straight in. Mac is out on a date with his girlfriend Kate, when she thinks she sees a face from the past. The only bad thing is her ex-boyfriend is supposed to be dead. Mac doesn't immediately believe her, but he changes his mind after he considers it. After all, she's never lied to him before, and what reason would she have to?
Wes was supposed to have died in a boating accident, but his body was never found. It's up to Mac to unravel the mystery and help to bring closure, especially for Kate. As he investigates, it's clear that there is much, much more to the story than anyone knows. And I really enjoyed seeing the plot unfold.
I was drawn into the mystery from the first page. I was intrigued that Kate swore she saw her supposedly dead ex. As the mystery progressed, I found it impossible to put down. Mac is a retired marine still figuring out what to do with his life besides drinking beer and scotch, fishing, and spending time with his girlfriend Kate. I love the fact that he's just a regular guy. He stumbles onto clues, follows leads, and does his best to fit the pieces together, though he sometimes makes mistakes. I look forward to reading more Mac McClellan mysteries in the future. And though this is the second in the series, each book stands alone.
Great book! I didn't read the first book in the series, but I was able to pick up everything from this one. Mac is a veteran pursuing a career as a PI investigating a sighting of his girlfriend's ex at a movie showing. Lots of adventure and great location (FL panhandle & Georgia). While there were some unanswered questions about a few characters whom were thought to be still around, I can only guess that there will be another sequal. Some of the female characters were a bit cliched but overall it was an exciting, enjoyable read.
This story gripped me from the very beginning and I couldn't wait for Mac McClellan to sort out the clues and save his sweetheart, Kate Bell's, sanity. The plot and pacing were excellent and kept me reading well into the night to see how Mac would sort out Kate's dilemma and bring her some peace. Mac is no stranger to trouble, but this time, he's bitten off (maybe) more than he can chew. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but Mac's investigation is a clever and fascinating odyssey. Mr. Helms has crafted an exciting ride with Deadly Ruse. I hope to see a third book coming out soon!
This is the second book of Mac McClellan but can be read as a standalone. I also have the first book but read this one first by mistake. No harm as I really enjoyed this story and felt I was right there with him throughout. An easy read and I would Definitely get along with Mac if I had the pleasure of meeting him. I can't wait to read Deadly Catch so I can once again follow a new favorite character of mine to see how he gets out of trouble in a different kind of investigation. Hope other novels follow with Mac.
Retired marine, private eye, sexy girls, whiskey, drugs, diamonds, casinos, the good ol’ South… what more could you ask for in a genre crime novel?
I enjoyed my second adventure with Mac McClennan. Despite the self-depricating B-movie references to its own plot points, closing a Mac McClennan book always leaves me wanting more Mac.
When Mac and Kate are leaving a theatre, Kate sees a former boyfriend who supposedly died in a boat accident years earlier. When Mac begins to investigate, bad things start to happen. Deadly Ruse turn into a really good crime novel which takes place on the panhandle of Florida. I found some of the odd-ball characters quite entertaining. Great read!
So what happens when you see someone from your past a ghost if you will who supposedly died . and why is a woman keep finding Mac and what is her game . and is she good or bad .and how does she know Bo, and will Kate get past her passed . and will covers be blown or friendships made . and revelations revealed . find this and much more when you buy this and stay tuned for book 3 .
