Frosted by the Girl Next Door

Rate this book
Casey Stevens needs distance from her movie producer parents and her social media starlet ex-wife. When she lands in Rocky Springs with a bruised ego and a pile of cash, the quaint tourist town seems like the perfect place for a fresh start. But is it the right place to make her dream of owning a classy sex shop a reality?

Tara McCoy knows a thing or two about licking her wounds. She never wanted to move back home, but she’s making the most of it, turning her family’s sleepy bakery into a cupcake destination. The last thing she wants next door is some seedy sex store, even if it’s promoting self-care as much as sex. And especially if the new owner is drop-dead gorgeous.

With the busy holiday season heating up, neither can afford to be petty or lose a customer. But when their reluctant truce melts into a little bit of sugar and a whole lot of spice, will love prevail, or will their differences be too hot to handle?

I wouldn't exactly recommend this Christmas-themed story. It really felt like it was written by two authors who weren't on the same page, because the plot was a total mess. They tried too hard to blend the holiday theme with the characters' personal problems, and it just didn't work. The chemistry between the main characters was forced, and even the sex scenes were pretty boring and cliché, very butch/femme. The side characters didn't add much either – I think two of them had their own subplot going on. The ending was rushed and confusing, like they were just trying to wrap things up quickly. I didn't even see the point of the epilogue

Cupcakes, sex toys, two lovely leads, and lots of wintery feels are the main strengths of “Frosted by the Girl Next Door” by Aurora Rey and Jaime Clevenger. If you’re coming for a solid slow-burn holiday-setting romance, look no further—you should enjoy this.

The authors have written a two-book series (so far?) and I wonder if that’s why some of the supporting characters don’t *quite* feature enough background and roles, drifting in and out at times, I felt. Aspen, the initially shy nonbinary, has a real presence, and I wanted to know more about them. Perhaps they’ll feature again. Ditto Casey’s best friend Natalia.

If the Act 3 reversal is a little “top-heavy” to create the angst and doubt, more diverting than it needs to be, how the resolution plays out is SO sweet and fun that, if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself forgiving any shortcomings.

Enjoy the frosting!

Thanks to the author and the publisher and to NetGalley for the opportunity to eat up this ARC.

Not the fluffy holiday romance that I believed it was supposed to be. Holiday isn’t really in there, except there’s a Christmas tree at one point. It doesn’t feel like the two authors knew what the other was doing and somehow the two characters suffered because of that. Meaning, I was suffering while reading. Have a go if you want angsty and sad during the month of December. This one was not for me.

Frosted by the Girl Next Door is a cozy and spicy holiday romance that brings together Casey, a recent divorcée looking for a fresh start, and Tara, a dedicated baker with big dreams for her family’s bakery. Casey’s decision to open an adult toy shop next to Tara’s cupcake business in the charming mountain town of Rocky Springs creates plenty of initial friction—and sparks.

The chemistry between Casey and Tara is undeniable, and their interactions range from laugh-out-loud funny to undeniably steamy. While Tara’s resistance to Casey’s shop fades quickly, their budding relationship is tested by Casey’s struggles with vulnerability and unresolved baggage from her past. The spicy scenes are well-written and playful, particularly with the addition of Casey’s shop inventory, but the miscommunication trope creates some frustrating moments which I thought slowed the emotional connection.

The festive setting, complete with snow, Christmas markets, and ice skating, adds to the book's charm, but a subplot involving a conservative townie intent on sabotaging Casey’s shop felt underdeveloped and lacked a satisfying resolution. Despite these small setbacks, Frosted by the Girl Next Door is an entertaining, lighthearted romance that pairs well with its companion book, A New Leash on Love. Perfect for fans of small-town romances with a bit of heat!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This was an interesting book, but not one that really stuck with me after I finished it.

It took me a while to get into the story. Casey and Tara, are sweet and likable, but the plot overall felt a bit underwhelming.

The miscommunication driving the conflict was frustrating because it felt like something that could’ve been solved so easily.
I also wish there had been more chemistry between them, though the spicy scenes were a good part at least.

On top of that, the drama around Gary Jenkins started strong but was completely dropped halfway through. Personally, I think that subplot had way more potential than the miscommunication trope the story leaned on.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for providing me with an ARC.

Excited to be the first review…does that mean I’m the first to read this A R C ? Either way, I was sooo excited to see this pop up and get to read it. A holiday romance??? Sign me the heck up.
This is suuuch a sweet love story between a hot butch sex shop owner and a kind-of-icy cupcake baker. What more could you ask for? Maybe some super hot spice scenes? (Including a strap?) ha! Check! This book had those too!! Maybe some great side characters? Check! Maybe a good plot with a bit of drama to really give the holiday romance some oomph? Check.
This book checked alllll the boxes for me and I am SO happy to report my first holiday romance of the year was a new one by Jaime Clevenger and Aurora Ray.

I really liked the premise of this and the bakery x sex shop neighbouring stores was a nice little dynamic. I also particularly liked the way the sex shop plot was handled (aka it was trans-positive).

The romance was cute but I can't say I was super deeply invested in it, but it was decent enough to keep me engaged.

It's hard to summarise how I feel because while I wouldn't say the plot felt disjointed, it did jump around a bit. The plot point about Gary the angry conservative got dropped halfway through and then is quickly resolved at the end. The plot with Casey's ex is hinted at and then all of a sudden everything is happening at once but was resolved very quickly. I think I almost wish the drama had been, yanno, more dramatic.

Words aren't working for me today so that's all I'm gonna say. Thank you to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books, Inc for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Casey is escaping from her problems, her controlling mother, her emotionally abusive (nearly ex) famous wife, and all the media circus that comes with that. She moved to Rocky Springs to make a new start, only her best friend Kit knowing her past. While out with Kit, she sees an empty storefront, and the idea of opening a sex shop comes to her.
After being a pastry chef in New York, Tara has returned to jointly run the family bakery with her sibling Shawn. When she learns about the sex shop opening next door, she is so angry, and wants to find someone to take it out on. But there is a mutual attraction between her and Casey.
This is a story that runs simultaneously with ‘A New Leash on Love’, by the same authors, with most of the characters appearing in both books.
This is an excellent story, well written with relatable characters. Somehow however, it didn’t quite measure up to its sister story.

I really enjoyed this book. A cupcake baker and a sex store owner. What a combo 😂 now, as spicy a combo that sounds, this book isn’t necessarily that. It’s a lot sweater, small town, Christmas romance. Although there are some great spicy scenes!

Written in third person with 2x POV’s. Narrated by Lula Larkin. Starting Over, Forced Proximity, Return to Hometown, Small Business Owners, Small Town, Masc/Femme. 3x Spicy Scenes.

This was a sweet Hallmark-style romance novel, so if that’s something you are into (like me) then this will be a great fit for you. A delightful holiday season read. Its sweet and also very spicy, with relatively low-angst aside from some minor misunderstandings and miscommunications. This was a very easy novel to read. It wasn’t quite up to hitting my 5-star standards, but if you are like me and love binging on holiday romance at the end of the year then this is well worth it to pad out your reading list.

My Rating: "B+"
GoodReads: 4-stars

Highlights:
-Fairytale Hallmark setting. This novel perfectly scratches that itch that I get each year around this time. It was perfectly full of fluffy snow, Christmas decorations, ice skating, and everything else you want to sink into during the holidays.
-Spiiiiicy…. With toys (obviously, although less than I expected considering)!
-Baker and a sex toy shop owner next door to each other? Absolutely delightful premise (even if it isn’t as original as it seems). I was sold on the blurb and the novel didn’t disappoint.
-Solid cast of supporting characters. Its common for novels like this to drop the ball on having secondary characters, but these ones were delightful while actually influencing the plot (instead of just being background scene fillers).
-This novel was simply sweet. At a bunch of different points and for different reasons, it was so sweet! The supportive sex-shop owner helping people to feel comfortable and empowered with themselves? Delightful. Helping old ladies try something new? Awesome.

Nitpicks:
-“Enemies to lovers” over-sells the conflict in this one. There certainly was some animosity between the protagonists at the beginning but it wasn’t anything too big in my opinion and it was resolved relatively quickly and easily. It was fine, but was one point that could have been improved upon.
-I was left with a lot of questions at the end of this novel. They were all unimportant side details, but it still felt like some plot points were left hanging. For example, Casey’s relationship with her parents was discussed a lot and drove a lot of plot but didn’t really go anywhere or get any sort of resolution or progress. There were some reveals near the end that I think warrant some big discussions that we never got to see. I realize that this isn’t directly related to the main point of the novel, but it is something that was brought up and discussed more than a little. Similarly, the protagonists “issues” were essentially handled offscreen which was a little less than satisfying after being the central point of the novel.

Leaving L.A. after much drama and opening an adult toy shop in a small mountain town in Colorado seems like a great idea. Although the cute baker next door isn’t so happy about kinky products being sold right next to her family bakery. But maybe the lady doth protest too much?

I received an advance copy from Netgalley for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Casey left L.A. with her tail between her legs. A more than messy divorce from Hollywood’s darling sees her visiting her friend Kit in a tiny mountain town. She did not expect to find Rocky Springs so charming. Casey feels excited about the next fase in her life and she is going to make the best of it. Why not there? She decides to open a classy adult toy shop to bring pleasure in all shapes and sizes to the people of Rocky Springs. The perfect location falls in her lap. It’s in the middle of of the town center next to a bakery that sells the most delicious cupcakes ever. If only the baker herself wouldn’t be so opposed to her business.

Tara left New York to try and take her families bakery to the next level. Her cupcakes are slowly winning over the town of Rocky Springs and for Tara that is just the beginning. A adult toy shop going in next door is not part of her businessplan, no ma’am! The new neighbor herself is also not in Tara’s plans, but my oh my, it’s not like she secretly wants to try out the new shops inventory with this Casey woman!

Frosted By The Girl Next Door is everything you want in a cosy and spicy holiday romance. There’s typical holiday activities like ice skating, Christmas markets and of course snow. All this is served with a side of extremely hot chemistry. You’ll be wishing for a gift certificate from Casey’s shop in no time!

Tara’s resistance towards Casey’s shop doesn’t last long and soon she is indeed sampling some of the Sweet Spot’s inventory! Casey might not have been ready to date again, she can’t resist Tara. That doesn’t make the problems of her past go away though. Casey is used to avoid conflict and doesn’t open up easily. Of course that’s where the problems begin and I absolutely sided with Tara on that. But then Casey pulls out all the stops and I melted right alongside Tara again.

A sparkly new erotic shop in a tiny little mountain town is bound to come across some resistance from the more conservative townies. There is one in particular that tries to ruin Casey’s shop. I thought she should have fought harder against this dude or at least Tara should have. I would have loved to see him publicly put in his place after the crap he pulled.

Tara’s sister Shawn loves dealing with people all day and is a star at small talk. Tara is the opposite. I really liked the mention of Tara feeling stuck in a market booth having to ‘extrovert’ all day and expecting to be drained after that.

I loved this collaboration between two awesome authors. There is even a ‘sister’ book to this one ‘A New Leash On Love’ that tells the story of Tara’s sister Shawn and Casey’s friend Kit. Two authors, two cute and spicy stories, what more can you want?

LOVED this book!
Bakery and sex shops next door to each other - what a concept! And the meet cute, love story? I am in! Two women struggle with being vulnerable and intimacy - real and charming. Clearly sweet and lovely with steamy scenes though I could do without the third act breakup.
I have recommended this book to no less than 5 of my queer friends.

***DNF at 17%***

the premises of this sounded really good and entertaining and I’m always here for a FF romance. but tara, one of the fmcs, pissed me off with her momentarily goody-two-shoes morality. so even when she tried to redeem herself I was aggravated enough to not want to see her happily ever after. I’m not in the market to push myself to love a book, so unfortunately DNF it is

Casey Stevens’ becomes a social pariah when her cheating social media star wife and her divorce. Her friend Kit invites Casey to escape for a while to Rocky Springs - Kit’s quaint and cute (and very small) hometown. Casey is enamored by the small town and decides to follow a long time dream - to open her very own sex shop - The Sweet Spot. And it’s not your ordinary sex shop - but something classy and educational.

Tara McCoy and her sister Shawn run Coy Cupcakes. Tara had returned to Rocky Springs a couple of years earlier after becoming disillusioned by the New York baking scene. She knows a thing or two about starting over, pursuing your dreams and is determined to turn her family bakery into a destination for locals and tourists alike. Tara isn’t exactly keen when The Sweet Spot opens right next door to the bakery. But Casey is sweet and charming and hot!

Frosted by the Girl Next Door is a bit of a forced proximity, sapphic holiday romance. If you like it sweet and a little spicy, with a dash of holiday drama, you’ll love Frosted by the Girl Next Door!

Casey needs distance to figure out what she wants in life after a messy divorce in which she never should’ve married Pavia in the first place and her Hollywood parents. She arrives at Rocky Springs at quaint town where she believes she can make a fresh start with the help of her friend Kit she decided to open up a sex shop some town people are not as accepting. Tara didn’t want to return home being in NY was great but admit she missed home she decided to to turn her family business with her sister Shawn into success she has plans to make bigger then her hometown. Casey and Tara meet they somewhat hit it off but then Tara assume something and they kind of get into it but eventually they find common ground and start to spend time together. Love the characters romance was good I like Casey trying to win Tara back after having miscommunication even though Tara blew it out of portion in my opinion but overall enjoy the read.

Thank you for the ARC! Now, that being said, let me be 100% honest. I’m 56% into this book and just came to write this review because YES, give it a read!! This is a great sapphic holiday read. It’s quirky and something I don’t feel like I had read before.

The reason I came to write this at 56% is because I’m almost tempted to stop here so I can delightfully finish the second half when I have the actual book in my hands!

ALSO- there’s a strap?! EXCUSE ME- I feel like we don’t get enough of those in lesbian novels?! Not to mention we’re talking butch and cute baker?!

This book is like what gay me dreamt of wanting a it’s like a spicy gay hallmark movie!

I just finished Frosted by the Girl Next Door and I am so glad I read it, even in the post holiday slump. This one was relatable, fun, and super sexy! I mean…it is a story about a cupcake baker and a sex shop owner, so of course it was a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy.
5 ⭐️
Almost like a classic Hallmark movie, but make it Sapphic, Frosted by the Girl Next Door features Tara, an uptight baker, and Casey, a new divorcee turned sex shop owner. In a charming small town that does Christmas like no one else, a newly opened adult store is not what will lead tourists to Tara and her sister’s cupcake shop. Though they’re chock full of chemistry between them, a push-and-pull ensues as Tara fights her desires for her closed-off view. Casey persists though and despite not being ready to date, she not only convinces Tara her shops not a bad idea, but woos her too. Of course, it can’t be that easy, there’s both of their fears, Casey’s train wreck ex, and a conservative townsman desperate to shut things down. There’s excellent representation in this novel, a truly classic third-act angsty twist, and spice that prude-ish Tara would blush at, but can’t seem to stop wanting.
This was a hit for me, especially with 30+ year old characters and a small, conservative town acting as a secondary character for these sapphic lovers.

Casey is starting over in the little mountain town Rocky Springs after an ugly divorce, by opening a classy sex shop. While she doesn't feel ready for a new relationship yet, she meets Tara, the cupcake baker next door, who might just change her mind.

"The heart of Rocky Springs. With the snow and the holly-lined street posts and the ornaments strung on the bare-branched trees, the little mountain town truly looked like a Christmas card."

Frosted by the Girl Next Door is what you get when you say: Hallmark Christmas movie, but make it gay. This story is very sweet and I would classify it as a cozy romance. There is some conflict, but there are vibes of happily ever after throughout. This is further solidified by the fact that while there is anti-sex shop sentiment in Rocky Springs, Tara and Casey don't encounter any homophobia from the residents of the town.

The writing style is pleasant, which makes for an easy read. I really enjoyed the banter, but also the more serious conversations between our main characters. Tara and Casey share their insecurities and trauma, which adds to their relationship feeling real. The side characters, like Shawn, Natalia and Aspen are a nice addition to the story as well.

"A bookshop would be fun, but what she’d like even more would be an adult toy store. Not a traditional sex shop, exactly. Something classy. Something that took the taboo out of all the different ways people could explore and enjoy sex."

Overall the authors work quite well together, though I did notice a few inconsistencies throughout. For example the relationship between Shawn and Tara seems to constantly be in flux. One moment it's written “She and Shawn didn't have a teasing sort of relationship...”, but then teasing is a substantial part of their dynamic throughout the story.

Another place I noticed this was the constant shifting of the point of view in the story. Even within chapters. Since Tara and Casey use the same pronouns and the authors often omit the “X said” in dialogue, I was quite frequently confused about who was thinking what, and who was saying what.

While I did think it was good that Casey eventually confronts everything that happened before the start of the book, it left a bad taste in my mouth how Casey easily seemed to forgive blatant abusive behaviour.

“Finally, Tara tipped her head. “Be careful with me.”
Not simply be careful. Be careful with me. “I’ll catch you if you start to fall.” She spun to Tara’s left side. “If I can’t, I promise to fall too.””

This novel also features a few explicit sex scenes. Which comes as no surprise as this is an insta lust/insta attraction story. The sex scenes seem to mostly be focused on the pleasure of Tara, the femme in the relationship. I would have liked to see more from both perspectives. I did really enjoy the conversations around consent that were sprinkled throughout the story.

Frosted by the Girl Next Door is the book for you if you are looking for a relatively low stakes, queer cozy romance with a bit of spice.

"...everyone loves a kiss and make up story. Especially at Christmas.”

I received an ARC from NetGalley and am sharing my review voluntarily.

Okay, first things first: cupcakes. I don’t think I’ve ever craved cupcakes as much as I did while reading this book. Seriously, Tara’s baking skills are so legendary that they make you believe even the gods would be tempted by her treats. And when Casey, the other main character, stumbles into Tara’s cupcake shop, you just know this is where their story is going to get sweet—pun intended.

Tara, the baker, has returned to her small hometown after a challenging time in the city. She’s determined to breathe new life into her family’s sleepy cafe and transform it into a buzzing hotspot. But while Tara’s passion for baking is undeniable, it’s her charm and down-to-earth, straightforward nature that really shine. She’s also unapologetically herself—case in point, her hilarious (and slightly embarrassing) dance-and-sing routine that happens amidst the baking chaos. I couldn’t help but smile at her endearing clumsiness.

Then there's Casey, who’s dealing with the fallout of a messy divorce, the constant attention of paparazzi, and the pressure of being the child of famous parents. She’s come to this small town hoping to lie low and escape her high-profile life—but her decision to open a shop selling sex toys? Yeah, that’s definitely not the best way to stay under the radar. The shop quickly attracts the attention of the local mayor, the town council, and of course, the more homophobic elements of the community. The tension is palpable as Casey grapples with her own anxiety and the fear of being forced to flee once again.

The clash of these two characters, Tara and Casey, is what really drives the story forward. They start out as business rivals—Tara’s cafe and Casey’s sex shop are neighbors, which sparks some competitive (and occasionally frosty) energy between them. Watching them navigate their growing feelings for each other, especially with their very different life goals, is a delightful mix of humor, tension, and sweetness. Their dynamic is fun to watch, with plenty of playful banter, but also moments of vulnerability as they work through their individual struggles.

What makes the book truly entertaining is the way it balances lighthearted moments with deeper themes. Yes, there’s a lot of humor, especially around the quirky business rivalry and some of the characters' over-the-top reactions to Casey’s shop, but there’s also a lot of heart. Tara and Casey’s personal journeys—learning to overcome their pasts and find a sense of belonging in a small town that isn’t exactly welcoming (in Casey's case)—give the story more depth than you might expect from a romantic comedy.

Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read—charming, funny, and a bit spicy. If you’re looking for a lighthearted romance with great characters, a touch of humor, and plenty of sweet, sweet temptation in the form of cupcakes (and sex toys), this book is for you. I couldn’t help but be drawn into Tara and Casey’s world, and I think you’ll feel the same way. It’s a delightful escape that shows you can find love and laughter even in the most unexpected of places.

Frosted by the Girl Next Door is one of those books that draws you in with the synopsis, but doesn't quite cross the finish line.
That's not to say the story isn't good, more that I didn't find it to be anything over and above any other holiday romance. Thus it wouldn't be something I'd be jumping to re-read.

Casey Stevens is fresh out of a notorious marriage and looking to keep a low profile in the middle of nowhere. With no imminent plans to return home, maybe now would be the ideal time to pursue her dream of owning a sex shop.
Tara McCoy is all for the stunningly handsome customer who's just walked into her cupcake shop staying around town, especially when Tara learns she wants to open a shop next door. But Tara's day dreaming looks set to implode, when she discovers the shop will be one focused on the most intimate of acts.
What follows is a mid-burn, yet insta love romance between Casey and Tara.

I liked the small town holiday setting vibe, the spicy scenes, and that the narrative is explicit in being sex positive and trans inclusive. The choice of mature women and trans folk as some of the sex shop's customers does not go unnoticed. I would love the chance to know more about Aspen, as the character was a great addition to the storyline.

However, where the plot fell short is firstly, Tara is too quick to move from objecting against the idea of a sex shop next door, to agreeing with the proposal. Particularly when the discontent between her and Casey is essentially the initial crux of their journey together. A similar point can be made for one of the town's inhabitants, who starts out as the obvious antagonist for Casey's character, yet randomly fades off the page for most of the plot before suddenly re-appearing.
Secondly, the introduction of Casey's ex-wife and the subsequent miscommunication with Tara (where Tara doesn't afford Casey any opportunity to explain herself), is the type of saga I'm just not a fan of. It reads as Casey still being under the thumb and pandering to her ex because of how it may "look" if she doesn't. Added to that is Casey clearly not being enough to warrant the opportunity to explain her actions to Tara; which is what you'd expect to happen between two adults. Whilst the resolution of their angst is sweetly touching, and a unique take on the "12 Days of Christmas", it still felt overshadowed by the communication breakdown.
I think the authors went down the wrong path in search of the angst/third act break up inspiration. I will say that I'm not a fan of the whole miscommunication trope and where it is used as a point of conflict in plots, it has to be perfectly executed with a super relevant and realistic need for it.

So there you have it, whilst I'm biased in my ability to really root for this sort of storyline, I probably enjoyed Frosted by the Girl Next Door sufficently to give another book from each separate author a whirl at some stage.

I really wanted to like this book. I'm a sucker for a festive romance, and when you make it queer then I am all in. But sadly it really missed the mark for me.

The premise is great. Tara is back home, helping to run the family bakery, and trying to rebuild her life when things didn't work out in New York. Having come out of a bad relationship, she's not really looking for love. But then along comes Casey, new to the small town Tara calls home, having fled from California following a disastrous divorce.

The attraction is immediate, but both hold off for the first half of the book, because of a rocky start and then because of hesitations on both sides. And then just when things seem to be looking up for them, as they tumble into bed with each other, Casey's past comes back to haunt her and Tara does not take it well.

And this is where things really fell apart for me. Without giving too many spoilers, Casey is called back to California for an intervention with her ex who is rapidly spiralling and threatening her parents' business. None of which is Casey's fault. But it is hugely triggering, and in the stress of it all she doesn't tell Tara everything, she just says it's a "family emergency". Which, to me, is fair enough, given they have only known each other a few months and had literally just started dating a couple of days previously.

But Tara gets so upset by this that she essentially ends everything with Casey. Her reasoning is that Casey should have trusted her, if they were going to ever be in a relationship. Yet there is never any concern from Tara about what Casey must have been through. And it is explained as being part of her own trauma, and I get that, trauma makes us act in ways that aren't reasonable. But everyone backs up the idea that Casey should put in the effort to win Tara back, as if it is all her fault.

I'm not against exploring trauma in stories, in fact I welcome it. But it was not handled well in this at all. None of it is properly resolved. One character's trauma is held above the other's, even though hers wasn't even the one which was explored in detail within the story. Yet we're expected to act as if this was the start of a relationship that is going strong a year later, which doesn't feel believable at all.

All in all this isn't the fun and festive story it is promoted as. And that's why I've only given it 2 stars.

i absolutely loved frosted by the girl next door! aurora rey and jaime clevenger have created the perfect holiday romance that’s cozy, charming, and absolutely swoon-worthy—a must-read for anyone who adores small-town holiday romances.

the story introduces us to casey stevens, who’s landed in the picturesque town of rocky springs, looking to start fresh after a messy public breakup. she’s hoping to open a classy, trans-positive, sex-positive shop to reinvent herself, but her new neighbor, tara mccoy, isn’t exactly thrilled about it. tara’s all about keeping her family bakery as the go-to spot in town, and she’s wary of what a “seedy” shop next door might mean—even if the new owner is drop-dead gorgeous.

this book checks every box for a feel-good holiday rom-com! casey and tara have the best kind of “opposites attract” chemistry. their initial clash quickly transforms into witty banter and an attraction that had me hooked from the start. the authors capture the holiday magic so beautifully: holiday town traditions, snowy streets, festive baking scenes—all of it feels like stepping into the ultimate holiday town. with every page, the festive spirit is almost tangible as casey and tara’s reluctant partnership turns into something so much deeper.

not only do we get a fantastic romance with plenty of spice and sweetness, but frosted by the girl next door also brings in all those classic hallmark rom-com elements that make the story irresistible. there’s a perfect “meet cute" (it’s so simple yet so adorable i’m still thinking about it after finishing the book), just the right amount of rivalry with witty banter, supportive friends and family who add heart and humor, and holiday traditions that make the setting so warm and inviting.

by the end, i was completely rooting for these two and smiling ear-to-ear. this book has all the heart, humor, and holiday cheer you could want, and it’s ideal for curling up with on a chilly night. frosted by the girl next door is everything i adore about holiday romances—a story full of warmth, love, laughter, and the spirit of the season. if you’re a fan of small-town rom-coms with holiday magic and a dash of heat (one of the main characters is a sex shop owner, so expect the heat to be 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️), don’t miss this one!

thank you, @netgalley and @boldstrokesbooks, for the e-arc. 🩷

""I'm glad we're in agreement. Now, help me get this gingerbread boudoir finished so we can go work on my cupcake orgy."
"It's not an orgy. You have to stop saying that." Casey shook her head, but the smile didn't leave her face."

First and foremost, thanks to NetGalley, Bold Strokes Books, Aurora Rey, and Jamie Clevenger for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Casey Stevens is escaping her complicated past by opening a classy sex shop in a small town in Colorado. Her main issue? The very attractive owner of the cupcake shop next-door doesn't seem to like the idea.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a rivals to lovers, considering Tara pretty quickly apologized and came around to the idea of Casey's shop.... and Casey. Regardless, their banter was hilarious and their chemistry was beautiful. There were scenes where I felt the dialogue was teetering on the line between realistic and mechanical, which made certain scenes a little too unserious. I would've liked to see a bit of a deeper connection between the characters.

The pace stagnated a bit at times, to a point that when Pavia got brought up again I had genuinely forgotten about her. I felt like it was a bit too much spice but it's also a spicy Christmas romance so it's not like that wasn't to be expected. But they kind of substituted lot of very necessary talking and processing by, y'know, getting busy. Tara immediately changing her mind when she said she just wanted to talk was kind of annoying, we never really see them fix their issues, just get back in bed. Desperately need both of them to get some therapy.

Regardless, I found the setting of the town charming, the characters sweet and endearing, and the romance cozy and Hallmark-movie-esque. I think the sapphics also deserve silly Hallmark romcoms that'll make you giggle and kick your feet. I'd also love to see more of Shawn, if the authors are interested in continuing to write within that setting—she was my favorite.
