Hattie Moore #2

OMG! I'm in Love with a Geek!

Rate this book
This is the year Hattie wants to find real FULL ON love. No more McFitties, but real, long-term love. And she thinks she knows who with. His mum may still call him Goosey Woosey and he might have an unnatural interest in doing well in his GCSEs, but Goose could actually be THE ONE! But how can Hattie make him realize this, when he seems more interested in his gecko? And there's the other matter of her dad, who seems to be more interested in saving the planet than in his new-found daughter. And there's also Gran, who has a new iPad and a dangerous obsession with Twitter. What's a girl to do? Write it all down in a hilarious diary about the ups, downs and total dramas of being Hattie Moore. Rae Earl is also the creator of E4's hit comedy My Mad Fat Diary.

I come from Stamford in Lincolnshire. It’s where a lot of TV and films are shot because it hasn’t changed much in 500 years. My childhood was like most people’s – a mixture of lovely and very odd. Lovely because I spent a lot of time with good friends, music and tadpoles. Odd because I spent a lot of time worrying about everything – like war, murderers and poisonous mushrooms (don’t ask). I was a bit weird. Like we all are.

After school I went to Hull University to study English Literature – which I LOVED. At that point the government actually still gave you money to study – so I GOT PAID to READ BOOKS for 3 years. I then worked in radio for 15 years. Firstly as the person who makes the adverts (all those annoying jingles that stay in your head for DAYS – that’s me!) Secondly as a breakfast presenter. I got to interview lots of famous boy bands and once nearly broke Cheryl Cole’s chair on stage. We don’t talk about that. I got in trouble. I’ve always written things but most of them were actually slightly rubbish. Or they were about people and I never wanted them to see it. I don’t think I was any good at writing till I was 35 and that was after a lot of practice.
I have a shed in my back garden I go to. It’s full of brilliant things – like a mini stable and horses, loads of stationery and a giant old railway station clock (slight ‘Dr.Who’ vibe). My first book ‘My Mad, Fat Diary’ was published a few years ago. Hattie is my third. My second is potentially the best book ever written since Shakespeare – but I can’t make it work so at the moment it’s just a bit rubbish. I haven’t given up hope though.

Sometimes all you want is a light-hearted teenage read and this is exactly what I got from Rae Earl’s ‘OMG, I’m in Love with a Geek’. I’ve recently been watching Channel 4’s ‘My Mad Fat Teenage Diary’ which is inspired by Rae Earl’s experiences growing up, and when I noticed a book in the library written by the same author I couldn’t resist picking it up and giving it a read.

The book itself reminded me of the Georgia Nicholson series by Louise Rennison; the main protagonist writes in a journal and we learn all about her ‘crazy’ family and her experiences with boys. Like Rennison Rae Earl manages to capture exactly what life is like for a fourteen/ fifteen year old. If you enjoy Louise Rennison novels then I would definitely recommend Rae Earl’s novels which bare many similarities to the Georgie Nicholson series.

I haven’t read the first novel (at first I didn’t even realise it was a sequel) but what is great about this book is that you can understand and enjoy this novel without reading the first novel; OMG, is this Actually Life.

The novel features fourteen year old Hattie Moore. Honestly, I expected her to be older (around sixteen) due to the age of Rae in the TV series ‘my Mad Fat Diary’ but whilst reading this book I began reminiscing what life was like as a fourteen year old. The main protagonist; Hattie is your typical teenage girl, she has a crush, good friends and a crazy family similarly to Georgia Nicholson.

One thing that I really enjoyed during this book was reading about Hattie’s crazy family especially her gran (especially when she gets a Twitter account!) I also loved the part where her gran gets an onesie and declares it is the future (which is actually scarily accurate). I found myself laughing a lot over her family (even if it was because they partly because they reminded me of her own- especially her gran).

Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was that we get to read all about Hattie’s experiences as a teenage; not only the good bits but the bad bits as well. Like all teenagers she makes mistakes and this made it easier to relate to her more. This is a very light-heartened and humorous read and if you are looking for a serious read then this isn’t the book for you!

Sadly this book didn’t make me laugh as much as the Georgia Nicholson series did (but those are very big shoes to fill) but it still made me laugh all the same, regardless of whether it was over Hattie’s mishaps or her family.

Overall it was a highly entertaining and enjoyable read, however I just wish that I discovered this book when I was younger, I would recommend this to anyone over the age of 12 (although I’m 18 and I really enjoyed this novel), I would give this book 4/5 stars.

Overall, I loved reading it. It was pretty good but Hattie is a b sometimes ngl. Gotta let that slide since she’s a teenager, so its okay I guess. At the end, I had fun reading this :)

It's clear I wasn't the taget audience for this book. I felt old when I read it. Couldn't identify at all with Hattie, more so with her mum or grandma.

However I liked the style of the book and the font chosen. It felt like a teenager (with pretty handwriting) could have made it.

I also liked Granny. She reminds me of Grandma Mazur in the Stephanie Plum series (by Janet Evanovich). An elderly lady who doesn't care about what people think of them. Great role models!

I gave it a 2, but it's more like 1,5 and I will not keep in my bookshelf.

I love how mental Hattie's family is. They remind me of my own family, and I think even though her character comes off as immature sometimes, she really does get what being in year 10 is like. You realise the future is getting closer, but really you still need time for all the important social stuff. She defines what 15 year old girls sometimes think, and how clueless we can be to a lot of things. Hattie does remind me of my best friend which is also why I liked the book. But I'd read anything Rea Earl writes and love it all the same.

I thought this book was purely amazing! Probably the best book that I have ever read! It was very relatable and I was always having a laugh. This book would be most suited to those who enjoy reading romantic comedies. All of the language was easy to understand. Basically the book is all about Hattie Moore's year. It shows her going through many ups and downs, trying to survive total embarrassment and of course it shows her going through multiple relationships. Overall this book was really good and it would highly recommend it to teens!

I couldn't finish this book. I just didn't care for Hattie and I couldn't read about her anymore.

I love the books that Rae Earl writes I have read "OMG I'm in love with a Geek" and "OMG is this actually my life"

The book just makes me laught, I think that Hatties life is an actual disaster. I loved all the drama, so if you like books with some drama in it I can only advice you to read this one.
