Art students and amateur painters alike will find advice and instruction in Barron's popular Pocket Art Guides series. Each title focuses on a specific aspect of painting or drawing, and includes tips that even experienced professionals will find helpful. These information-packed books are handy artists' companions for the reference shelf, but are also small enough to carry along with art supplies on field trips. Urban Sketching and Painting takes the artist inside the techniques behind the exciting artistic movement of location drawing. Includes captioned color illustrations and notes on how famous artists solved specific problems.
I make it a habit to read as many of the urban sketching books as I can, as they're all unique in some way, even if just in the art examples that they show. This book is like many, in that it's an introduction to the art form, and not highly technical (I think that's a good thing). The really cool and unique thing about this book is that it doesn't just focus on pen/ink/watercolor - there are some nice tips and examples for painting in oils, especially.
Overall, perhaps the best thing to say is that after I read my library copy, I ordered a copy of the book for my own shelves at home.
I've recently discovered these pocket edition art books, and they are fun and small enough to travel with. This one has examples of how you could capture an urban scene in your sketchbook using various media, and has tips and tricks that are fun. I think I would have gotten more out of it had I actually tried some of the exercises, and I can see revisiting this one again at a later date and doing just that.
This book is mainly for those who are beginners to both sketching and urban sketching. It wasn't quite the book for me, given I have had experience in sketching, however I could see this being a very useful book for those starting out. It gave prompts and ideas on how to get started in sketches in pencil, graphite, watercolor, pastels, oils, and more.
