Count and share with…underwear! Come along on a zany adventure with hilarious pictures from the New York Times bestselling illustrator of Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site .
What’s one thing that two bears, three yaks, four goats, and six cats have in common?
They hate to share.
But look out—here comes a pack of twenty pigs ready to prove that sharing makes everything twice as fun!
This seriously silly picture book with artwork by the New York Times bestselling illustrator of Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site irresistibly combines the concepts of counting and sharing.
The art of sharing is on full display in this rhyming sensation. A single pair of underwear and two bears... this is only the first in a series of rhymes and shortchanged characters who cannot seem to get a break. However, if everyone would just share and work together, something might work itself out. Rhymes, wonderful pictures, and great pacing keep the story running swiftly and the characters enrhralling the listener. Neo liked it, though we both admit that he was hooked with the word ‘underwear’. A great story with silliness to show that rhymes and reading CAN be fun!
Well, I can guarantee you this: if you read this book to a group of preschoolers, you’re gonna get a lot of giggling.
Here’s the problem: there is this really cool pair of giant underwear, and two fuzzy bears who both want to wear it. They refuse to share the underwear. So one bear is left yelling out, “This is not fair!” The book continues in a like fashion. There are three items, for example, and four animals who want them, so three animals take them, and one animal is left out and unhappy. It is not until we reach ten twisty slides and 20 pigs who want to slide that we meet some animals who are capable of sharing and working together. The pigs’ solution of riding down piggyback (how else?) allows everyone to enjoy the fun of sliding, and encourages the other animals to share the items they had previously taken, all the way back down to the two fuzzy bears sharing one big pair of underwear.
The illustrations are produced in an adorable cartoon style that has a lot of appeal to children, and there is humor in each illustration, as well.
My two fears (and I am not kidding) is that sometime later this week we will hear reports of pre-k kiddos [1] trying to go down the slide piggyback, and [2] creating havoc and hysteria in the bathroom by trying to share their underwear. They are pretty literal!
Take one counting book...mix it with a comical tale of underwear-sharing...add some tongue-twisting rhymes...and soon there will be uncontrollable laughter. For those of you that may wonder if I have finally flipped out or am going through my second childhood...let me try to explain. It was for a challenge... and I "borrowed" 3 five year olds to share it with me. They loved it and so did I. The teacher in me competed with the biologist in me, and came to the conclusion that a fun and silly story with a focus on math and sharing concepts was okay for any age.
I laughed aloud more than once. Excellent format, well-matched rhymes, and very fun illustrations to go along with it. On each page there are a certain number of animals and then one less of whatever it is that they all want, so there's always one animal left out, and that one's reaction is the part that usually had me laughing. I can only imagine how hilarious kids would find it (will be testing it on my nieces soon).
This perfectly silly picture book starts out with one big pair of underwear, and continues with a whole bunch of animals that refuse to share. Children will laugh and count their way through the rhyming text until everyone finds a way to get along. This fun story will be read again and again and enjoyed by youngsters age’s four to eight.
This book does some great playing with the concepts of counting and sharing. It is very silly, so a great way to share with younger kids, but some of the math concepts are probably best for older kids, maybe 5 and up. The repeating scenes always have two numbers, one shorter than the other, so there is not enough to go around. The tension is lost if you don't know your numbers well enough to see that there is a problem. And knowing that 10 + 10 = 20 is very important for the climax.
The art is brilliant, and the combinations of animals and activities, especially the sharing ones, are brilliant and creative.
I LOVED this book because it is cross curricular and elicits immediate interest (ie: the mention of underwear). It addresses counting, adding, and that often difficult concept of "how many more". In addition, it teaches sharing in a humorous way. A new learning for me was the technical detail to which reviewers of children's picture books go to when discussing the illustrations. It's like another language. Wow! I was surprised the reviewer went beyond typical descriptors.
Looking for sharing books for SS and SD. But one that has counting, fun rhymes, great pictures (of course!), and UNDERWEAR? Perfection! Excited to read this with them.
7/25/18 Read a couple of times during our vacation break. They seemed to enjoy listening. We didn't pause much to do any counting. And the message of sharing may have been lost. But it was read.
This book was not only boring, it was hard to understand. What exactly were they trying to accomplish? Learning how to count? Why the jump from ten to twenty? Are they trying to illustrate addition and subtraction? Why the sudden jump to division in the last set? Are they trying to illustrate the concept of sharing? It's kind of lost in the busyness of everything that is going on in this book.
I found it hard to read, harder to engage with, and it left me scratching my head wondering what the point of it all was. I felt like the art on the cover had nothing to do with the content, like the illustrator was trying to engage people through that art, but the tantalizing picture of two bears in one giant piece of underwear was never even explained or explored.
Story: I haven't the faintest Art: Disappointing Price: 7.99
I like both this author and the illustrator very much. This does a really good job teaching the challenges of scarcity and the benefits of sharing. It's laugh-out-loud funny too.
What a great, silly picture book full of numbers, rhymes, and the concept of sharing. This book is about zany, hilarious animal adventures ranging from bears in underwear, to seals on wheels, to five cats that like to nap. This picture book has it all-in-one, filled with counting, funny animals, rhyming words, and sharing. What more could a kindergarten child ask for? It is easy to imagine a primary aged child reading this book with enthusiasm and rhythm. The author even adds a bit of adult humor, which makes it all the better. Even though I absolutely adore this concept book, $17.99 is a bit much. Maybe a better $12.99 would suit the idealist parent of a school age child. The illustrations are simple, silly, and simply adorable. The characteristics and detail of each illustration brings the text to life and leaves any reader smiling. The illustrator’s artwork brings a lesson to each page, making it fun to teach numbers, life-lessons, and words that rhyme. This hilarious counting book is a light read that everyone can share!
Rating: I highly recommend this book for the age intended. I give it five out of five stars easily!
My grandkids and I don't always agree about what makes a book great, but we all love this one! It's a lot of fun to read the rhyming text, and even the youngest kids will appreciate the wacky illustrations. I don't care that much about the "educational value" of books--to me it seems that all books have educational value--but for those who insist, this one even has a bit of math and an upbeat message about sharing.
There are books that kids want to hear over and over. Sometimes I hide one of those so I won't have to read it for the fifteenth time. This is definitely not that kind of book. It makes me smile every time.
I absolutely loved this book and thought it was adorable. I feel like this book had a lot of learning points in it. There is counting involved, names of animals also the lesson of the book is to share. This book made sharing seem so much fun with the illustrations. The illustrations were all so very eye catching and went with the story line in the book. If there were suppose to be twenty pigs drawn then twenty pigs were drawn in the book. The storyline matches up with the illustrations so well that it feels like you are watching a movie. With all that said I feel like that this book deserves to be nominated as a Caldecott winner for 2015.
I picked up this book to read because who doesn't want see two cute bears sharing a large pair of underwear? I really wanted to read a kid's book that was completely about this storyline. Unfortunately, these cute bears in the large underwear were only in the first three pages of the book. The rest of the book is cute and does teach your child numbers in a creative way with really fun pictures but I really wanted to find out more about the bears and their underwear.
A book featuring gigantor undies? Yes, please! underwear books make up one of my favorite genres - the underwear book genre.
but this book is about so much more than just underpants! Counting, subtracting, and sharing are some of the terrific lessons this book has to offer. Silly AND educational. everyone wins!
Counting and sharing, sharing and counting... This is a winner for everyone! No one gets left out and everyone has fun, who could ask for more? Read my full review here. http://julianaleewriter.com/2014/09/2...
Teaches Math and Encourages Sharing in an Imaginative Way
An imaginative and fun read about math and sharing. My three-year-old son and I enjoyed reading it together and will, no doubt, continue to do so many more times to come.
This was a little heavy on the rhyming. It got a little heavy handed and I got a little jumbled with the rhyming and I'm an adult. Lol it's good for counting and sharing but this would not be the book I start with. Still a fun little book.
Help model dealing with disappointment as there is one less item than there are animals and one is always left out in some way. Kids could brainstorm alternatives.
"Two brown bears who hate to share. ONE bear wears the underwear. ONE bear cries, 'That isn't fair!'"
My students are going to love this one. The illustrations are full of humorous situations and the text reads like a series of tongue twisters. Should make a fun read aloud!
This is a book about sharing and bearing in underwear or counting. But really it is a vocabulary book! So full of fun words. It would work for a storytime about animals, sharing, but is a general funny crowd pleasing read aloud!
Adorable! I bought this at the Scholastic Book Fair my school is having, and I will definitely use it. I can make a music lesson out of it somehow, or an art lesson. But seriously, adorable. The rhyming is perfect, the illustrations hilarious, and the message--about sharing--is relevant.
Who doesn't love a giant pair of underwear? Not only is the cover of this book so funny but so is the rest of the story. I can see this being a great book for counting and addition and subtraction or just a fun read aloud!
Probably my favorite picture book that I've read this year. I mean, can you beat the title? Super fun read-aloud, rhyming text, funny side notes, great pictures, and a nice-but-not-overbearing message about sharing.
This was part of a library storytime. The theme was “underwear” but this turned into a counting book about a bunch of stuff and the theme was definitely not underwear. All the kids lost interest and were wandering around by the time we were halfway through.
