A horrible experience caused a rift between Ari (Ariana) and Nick, which lead to them being estranged for two years. While the two were putting their signatures at the bottom of the divorce papers in the lawyer’s office, all kinds of thoughts began to take over Ari’s mind. Things like, were they ever good enough for each other, did they try hard enough, was she the right woman for him, was he the right man for her. Nick too was lost in his own world. The tension between them could have been cut with a knife. It made me curious if they would work things out…
While reading you quickly find out that communication, or lack of it, is the couple’s main problem. It all started with the horrible experience where both dealt with the outcome in their own way. When it got to overwhelming, one pushed the other away and the other used work to hide as a shield, causing them to get out of sync. Ari and Nick lost their way to communicate their mutual loss, needs, feelings, and now two years later, they have no idea how to overcome the wall they have built.
This book is a short read and tells the story of two lovers who lost their way and are on the road to rediscovering what they have lost along the way. I like this story's concept and there isn’t a couple who deserve that second chance more than Ari and Nick. I also like the simplicity of this book, it deals with realistic problems, realistic situations. But the situation in the collapsing building wasn’t one of those moments. Talk about a bad time to get touchy feely. But for the rest is, “Their Second Chance” a nice, touchy read.
Another small aspect I like in this book is Harley the dog and her role as therapy dog to Ari. It’s always amazing to read how animals can help with easing pain, whether that pain is physical or emotional. While Harley helped Ari cope and was strong presence in the beginning, she disappeared further in the book. But still, I like how she was incorporated into the story.
