I am a scientist by training, but a writer at heart. I have always loved reading with a passion and turned my hand to fanfiction a few years ago. I write stories similar to the ones I enjoy reading. They are interesting but light, romantic but not steamy. I am a super fan of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and have been having a wonderful time writing P&P variations, exploring how new circumstances affect the beloved characters. So far I have published two novel-length Pride and Prejudice variations plus one short story via Amazon. My books include ‘I am Jael’ and ‘The Blind Will See’.
Elizabeth just happens to be vacationing in Ramsgate with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner. She meets Georgiana Darcy as both are on the beach and they become friends. The first approximately half of this book has to do with Elizabeth's observations of the relationships between Georgiana, her governess, Mrs. Younge and George Wickham and her decisions about such. In this variation, Elizabeth shares her doubts with Georgiana and then, ironically, it is Georgiana, herself, who one night overhears proof that backs up Elizabeth's doubts. G. flees to the Gardiner's rented house and is given refuse there. And, although, Mrs. Younge has intercepted letters between the Darcy siblings (more is involved with this) Darcy does show up and searches Ramsgate when he doesn't find his sister at the house he rented for her.
So Georgiana is safe and she is now good friends with Elizabeth. George Wickham is not done...not in the least. He vows revenge on Elizabeth and when he shows up in Meryton with the Militia, he follows through with his plan. I am not sharing all the details here but it is different from canon. Gossip insues. However, Darcy knows Elizabeth better by now and acts to show the community that they are wrong about Elizabeth.
Lady Catherine has her part and Collins is the one to inform her about her nephew's actions. Charlotte is also part of this story. And Caroline Bingley makes her appearance. We have several chapters of an epilogue going several years into the future.
BTW: I did look up Jacob's Ladder, Ramsgate on the Internet and found some modern day photos of such. The metal one there now replaced the original wooden one.
Enjoyable I’m reviewing this novel from the audiobook perspective, as the ebook is not yet released.
Elizabeth and Georgiana meet one another in Ramsgate, and become friends. With hints from Elizabeth to be wary of Wickham, Georgiana finally realises something is not right and goes to her and Mrs. Gardiner for refuge until her brother can be summoned.
This is another enjoyable story from this author, but there are no big surprises with this rather common storyline, and no significant misunderstandings between ODC. Even Darcy’s proposal was civil, but not the most romantic. Wickham does offer a touch of angst in Meryton, and I liked how Mr. Bennet takes action right away. However, it’s the loyal young men of the town who hand him some local justice until Darcy takes him over.
Harry Frost’s performance and narration is always great, and this book was no exception. I give him five stars.
Departing from the original at the start, Ramsgate Rescue poses the 'what if' scenario that Elizabeth meets the Darcys on seaside holiday and prevents Georgiana Darcy from making a monumental mistake.
I've been binging on the author's books lately and this one struck me as being a cut above the rest when I read it straight through from start to mid-way point without coming up for air or realizing I was even occupying planet earth. There was a tension and forward action paired with well-developed setting, characters, and relationships that melded superbly.
The friendship that develops between Georgie and Lizzy, the side friendship of the villains Mrs. Younge and Mr. Wickham, the beach and sea, Elizabeth with her Gardiner little cousins and aunt, Darcy learning to get over his wariness of the trade class and misguided sense of familial duty- so much is going on in Ramsgate Rescue beyond the slow build romance that only comes to a head after so much has happened that helped build the romance organically as one of and not 'the' major element.
Yes, this one is a jewel of a variation and a must-read for Austenesque lovers who want sweet, mildly inspirational, low-angst family and romance stories.
4.5* rounded up. With low angst, this variation forwards the premise of Elizabeth meeting Georgiana at Ramsgate at a pivotal time. With Elizabeth's astute observations and modest advice, Georgiana makes different choices from canon. I deducted half a star only because I wanted more direct interaction between ODC. Harry Frost's excellent narration in the audiobook supplements the story charmingly and humourously.
What can I say brilliant wonderful satisfying fabulous yep all that and more. I find it hilarious when the badies get sent to Australia, as an Australian it tickles me somewhat my sense of humour I guess. Loved it.
This was a beautiful variation with Elizabeth meeting Georgiana at Ramsgate before the events in canon P&P started. As the title implies the is a rescue. This part of the story was well written and even though the premise has been used before this tale is unique and kept me turning the pages. Darcy believes since the ladies who took care of Georgiana when she escaped her rented Ramsgate house and the wiles of Wickham and Mrs. Younge, are going to grasping for a large reward for their actions. It was a big surprise when Mrs. Gardiner set him straight on that idea before he was even able to articulate it.
Georgiana convinced Darcy to stay in Ramsgate for a while longer and enjoy the seaside. And she wants to spend more time with her new friend, Elizabeth. Darcy starts admiring her almost immediately. Elizabeth grows to enjoy his company but keeps her feelings tightly reigned in knowing he is far above her. But she and Georgiana become fast friends and the corespondents. Elizabeth was instrumental in Bingley finding out about Netherfield when she learned from Georgiana’s letters that he is looking for an estate.
Bt the time Bingley invited the Darcys to visit him at Netherfield Darcy had time aplenty to realize what he really wanted in life and it was Elizabeth.
There was some ugly drama involving Wickham attempting to extort money from Darcy when he was in Hartfordshire. The reaction to his showing up as part of an advance group assigned to scout out Meryton for lodging, etc., for the militia was one of the best written scenarios ever written as part of a variation. Wickham comes off as so evil and dastardly here his severe punishment seemed quite appropriate and well deserved. His wicked actions had repercussions though. I don’t want to spoil the experience for the next reader.
I loved so much about this story. I’m such a fan of this author now. Highly recommended.

>>Rating: mature teen: violence, descriptions of injuries sustained during a brutal tavern brawl. It was an all-out, all-hands melee. What fun. Okay, I was in a vicious mood. >>Angst Level: Wickham, enough said. That scoundrel makes my blood pressure go up every time his name is mentioned, the SBRB. >>Source: Borrowed from KU [2-24-24]: I volunteered to leave a review. I first read this as it was posted on Fan Fiction forums. I enjoyed it and was pleased to read it when it was published. I adored this story. I even liked Lydia. Who knew? Mr. Bennet found the key to getting the attention of the younger girls. It was hilarious.

Ramsgate: every JAFF reader shudders when they read that name. We know what happens there but, this time, a new character was staying at the seaside village. Mrs. Gardiner and her children were recovering from the influenza and her niece Miss Elizabeth was helping with the younger children.
Georgiana Darcy met Miss Elizabeth and they became friends. Miss Elizabeth saw actions between Mr. Wickham and Mrs. Younge that indicated a prior acquaintance. This concerned her. Elizabeth watched, with alarm, as a young Miss Darcy became enamored with the older Mr. Wickham. Elizabeth issued a gentle caution; however, Miss Darcy refused to listen. Elizabeth apologized but gave her location if Miss Darcy ever needed help. That day came all too quickly when a distraught Georgiana showed up at Mrs. Gardiner’s rented cottage. They hid her presence until an express could be sent to her brother in London. He never received it.
Darcy had been staying in Kent checking Lady Catherine’s books and decided he needed to escape his aunt’s effusions about him marrying her daughter. It was hot weather and he thought visiting his sister in Ramsgate would be a cooler option than returning to London and suffering the heat of summer. He arrived at an empty house and no one knew where his sister was. The name Wickham sent him into an angry frantic spiral. It took Darcy all that day to find his sister and they were soon reunited. Darcy then became acquainted with Mrs. Gardiner and her niece, Miss Elizabeth Bennet. His worldview would change after that meeting.
Meryton: jump forward to Bingley leasing Netherfield and the arrival of a party that would include Darcy and Georgiana who would arrive later. In the meantime, Elizabeth was in Meryton with her sisters when they encountered several militia officers. They were scouting the area looking for space for an encampment of soldiers to lodge until they moved on to Brighton. One of the officers was Mr. Wickham.
The situation would come to a head at the card party held by Mrs. Phillips. Wickham and Elizabeth would exchange words and it would not go well for him. To his shock, and the other officers, he was escorted from the house. In his anger, Wickham declared war on Miss Elizabeth. It was obvious that Mr. Wickham had never read ‘The Act of War’ by Sun Tzu and his sage advice, ‘Know your enemy.’ Wickham made a critical error when he tried to besmirch the good name of Miss Elizabeth in a tavern full of the locals. Oh dear, I had to laugh. This was the most exciting scene that I kept reading again and again. When Wickham looks into a mirror, he will regret going to war with Miss Elizabeth. No, it did not go well. I enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.
The what might have happened if Elizabeth and Georgiana met at Ramsgate story was told in such details I pictured myself there with the story. While others will give you an in depth description I will say the plot was different in a way that made me enjoy it more than just a retelling.
I enjoyed this what if story that places Elizabeth at Ramsgate at the time that Georgiana is there. It is engaging and very well written with unexpected but lovely events. A worthy read!
Ms. Kendig has once again given us a delightful variation of ODC. Elizabeth Bennet, as a friend and savior to Georgiana, is how it all begins. This gives our beloved Darcy and Elizabeth a much better beginning.
Wickham's downfall is throughly enjoyable.
All of our favorite characters are present but not at the forefront of the story. This is truly a Dracy/ Elizabeth story. I highly recommend it!!!
As we have come to expect from Ms. Sending, Ramsgate Rescue is another triumph! Tweaking canon so that Elizabeth is in Ramsgate with Mrs. Gardiner and the children, the author has engineered a gentle tale in which Darcy overcomes some of his issues a bit more easily, while Wickham is exceptionally despicable. A very sweet tale!
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. Elizabeth has fine eyes, no wealth, and eminently unsuitable connections. Darcy finds that he can neither act on his feelings for her nor wish them away. Elizabeth Bennet happens upon Georgiana in Ramsgate, along with her companion and an old family friend. Her new acquaintance seems to have everything, family, fortune and love, but when Elizabeth observes some strange things, she suspects that all is not as it appears, and a few well-intentioned words set into motion a surprising series of events. Mr. Darcy has spent years cleaning up Wickham’s trail of debts and other indiscretions, never able to bring himself to take decisive action. Surely there is a way to deal with this miscreant once and for all? So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I highly recommend to everyone.
A very nice story! I enjoyed the friendship of Elizabeth and Georgiana. Mr. Darcy was a good man from the beginning, after being upbraided by the Colonel about his snobbery.
Elizabeth is impressed with Mr. Darcy in Ramsgate. He is pleasant to Mrs. Gardiner even though she is a tradesman's wife, and his love for Georgiana is unmistakable. After going home, Elizabeth maintains a lively correspondence with Georgiana, telling her that Netherfield Hall is available for lease. When they come to Netherfield with Mr. Bingley, the scumbag Wickham has just arrived and threatens Elizabeth with spreading rumors about supposed intimate encounters at Ramsgate, while also planning to blackmail Darcy or he will spread rumors of Georgiana. Big mistake for him! I loved his fate, so appropriate!
However, he did start rumors of Elizabeth, so when Darcy comes to the Assembly and has Miss Bingley spew the disgusting rumors of Elizabeth's supposed trysts when she was away, he is furious. But his love for Elizabeth overcomes it and he proposes to Elizabeth on the spot. They marry soon, and Lady Catherine finds out too late but thinks they are still only engaged and descends upon Longbourn with Mr. Collins to stop it, only to find she is too late. She has to be forcibly removed from the estate, haha.
This was such a good what-if story with a twist on the Ramsgate debacle!
What if Elizabeth Bennet was in Ramsgate to stop Mr. Wickham and Mrs. Young from deceiving Georgiana Darcy? In this variation, Elizabeth and Georgiana meet on the beach and strike up a friendship. Elizabeth, being an expert on flirty sisters, notices some things that feel off about Mr. Wickham. She warns Georgiana, but the poor, young, innocent girl falls for him anyway...until his deceit is discovered in real time. Georgiana makes a desperate flight to Elizabeth, who keeps her safe until Mr. Darcy can arrive.
Mr. Darcy arrives not understanding what has occurred. Fearing that he will now owe Elizabeth and the Gardiners, he reluctantly allows Georgiana to continue her friendship with them. As both families leave Ramsgate, they continue corresponding and getting to know one another. Mr. Darcy starts to reflect on the ways that his sister's friendship with Elizabeth has changed her and he starts to slowly fall in love with her.
The dastardly Mr. Wickham isn't done though and he plots to make problems for Darcy, Georgiana and Elizabeth.
If you like sweet romance, minimal angst, major Wickham comeuppance, and and unconventional path for ODC to their HEA, then this is the story for you!
This author never disappoints. Elizabeth accompanies Aunt Gardiner and her four children to Ramsgate to recover from influenza that struck many in the Gardiner's household. On the beach with the children, Elizabeth meets Georgiana Darcy, strikes up a friendship, and eventually is instrumental in rescuing her from the scoundrel Wickham and Mrs Younge's plot to get control of Georgiana's dowry. Darcy comes to Ramsgate, and is at first wary of Elizabeth and Mrs Gardiner because of their ties to trade. He quickly learns his mistake, and an admiration for Elizabeth begins to take hold.
The scenario of Elizabeth and Georgiana meeting in Ramsgate is not, by any means, a new one. However, this one is so much fun, and so much more satisfying than others I've read. The characters here are more forthright than usual and, as a result, problems are solved more easily. The romance is lovely. This is a swoon worthy Darcy, and a courageous and quick thinking Elizabeth, just the way we like them. The usual villains appear, and get the most superb comeuppances.
The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for an enjoyable story, and a pleasant way to pass some time.
Elizabeth befriends a young lady mostly by accident in Ramsgate where she had gone to help her Gardiner relationship recover from a recent encounter with influenza. While interacting with her new friend, Elizabeth noticed several things that cause her to worry for the young lady. Through a few conversations and a plea to come to her of she ever feels unsure of anything, Elizabeth manages to help the young lady see small things she would normally not notice. And when the young girl flees, it is Elizabeth whom she runs to. So starts the friendship between Elizabeth and Georgiana that grows to include her brother, who has a much better impression of her before he shows up in Meryton. Wickham stirs up trouble for Elizabeth but it is short lived. Party of the story is told through letters better Elizabeth and Georgiana mostly but you see some from other characters as well. The story is split fairly evenly between Ramsgate and Meryton. Wickham gets his comeuppance rapidly and thoroughly. I liked the epilogue provided. I actually wished there was a little bit more to the story as I really enjoyed the storyline but it felt like it ended too soon.
“A wrinkled blanket of blue-green spread out before them, embroidered with white sea foam atop cresting waves and a golden sun-glitter that no thread could ever truly match.” That line…a poetic description of the sea, satisfying to read and absorb. Georgiana is perfectly portrayed as young, naive, easily taken in by the plotters, but quick to act for herself when the plot is overheard. Less angst than is often encountered for ODC. Apt and amusing abrupt change for Wickham; I love how he and his cohorts were handily managed by some burly locals with nothing for Darcy and cousin to do but tidy up!
I have enjoyed each of her stories that I have read and/or listen to. They are uplifting, and I love the relationship of Darcy and Elizabeth. In this story, Elizabeth meets and befriends Georgiana at Ramsgate prior to canon. This friendship causes Georgiana to reconsider some observations and find safety with Elizabeth and her aunt. This friendship helps Darcy to process some of the prejudice feelings before meeting the rest of Elizabeth‘s family. I love that Wickham is truly taken care of. This is a story that I will gladly re-read/listen to again especially as the talented narrator Harry Frost brought this to life.
Elizabeth is in Ramsgate with Mrs. Gardiner and her children while they recover from an illness when she meets Georgiana Darcy on the beach, and a friendship is formed. She quickly suspects what Wickham is up to and helps rescue Georgiana. The Darcys and Elizabeth aren't finished with Wickham yet. He wants revenge.
For all the plotting and conniving that Wickham attempts, this is a surprisingly low-angst variation. He definitely paid for it in the end. The story is well-paced and enjoyable, although I tended to skim over all the food descriptions that were given every time they ate something.
I loved the story and I love this author's writing. I understand there must be conflict for our dear couple. I understand that in order to produce new and different variations, some push our cast of characters into what I consider extreme angst. This author doesn't do that and I am grateful. I wish there was a separate rating for angst! Our everyday life is stressful enough without reading stories that stress us out! I also appreciate the God references. It is completely appropriate for that time and place in history.
I put off reading this one. The storyline is not a favorite of mine. I was, however, wrong. This book was very good. Though the story has a similar outline as others taking place in Ramsgate, I found the story itself to be very different and I enjoyed it very much. The known characters are a bit different, stronger maybe? Anyway, the differences are not so great as to make them unrecognizable. I thought there needed to be more Caroline, though it is my only complaint.
This is a lovely story with no heavy angst though Miss B and Wickham and later Lady C do make attempts. Lizzy is in Ramsgate with a recuperating Aunt Gardiner and the children when she meets Georgiana. Mrs Young is her companion and Wickham is 'surprised' to see them there. From there the story unfolds and I've had an enjoyable afternoon reading it and can recommend.
This story is a delight start to finish - all the characters are true to JA, but each is given a special something extra with some creative plot devices. I just adore this Darcy and Elizabeth, but, truly, each character is well conceived and the dialogue reads beautifully. I’ve been pushing my family away for the last day so I could finish this, so be prepared for your schedule to be disrupted!
Elizabeth Bennet is in Ramsgate and befriends Georgiana Darcy. She is able to introduce just enough doubt to Georgiana that she realizes George Wickham is NOT all he says he is. Elizabeth is integral in rescuing her friend from danger and as such meets her brother, Fitzwilliam Darcy. It takes him a while, but Darcy is pleasantly surprised by the young lady and her family. Through letters, a visit, some excitement and excitable family, Elizabeth and Darcy find their happily ever after.
I liked this Ramsgate story. While it didn't go beyond the typical foiled-elopement trope, it was light and well-written. There was enough intrigue with Wickham's villainy to keep the pace up without being angsty. I would have liked a little more passion between Lizzy and Darcy, but overall, I enjoyed the story.
LOVED IT! This book, like all her other books was so good. I love the fact that she gives closure in the epilogue. Not all authors do that. I as love that she put it on audible. I have eye issues so I can’t read for very long. It’s much easier on me to listen. I highly recommend this book. HAPPY READING/ LISTENING!
A Pride and Prejudice variation in which Lizzy (on vacation to Ramsgate with Aunt Gardener and her young cousins) rescues Georgiana from her ill-considered engagement to Wickham.
This was a little long for my tastes, but I have to admit to enjoying seeing Wickham get him comeuppance in Hertfordshire.
The plot was not so very different, and the characters were true to canon, but the writing is excellent without the misspellings and grammatical errors that drive me distracted. I love the way that Elizabeth dealt with Wickham, which took on a momentum of its own. Very nice, clean story, low angst, and lovely way to escape into Austen World for an afternoon!
