The Bourne Identity meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith for the New Adult crowd.
Members of the CIA’s specialized team Sparrow, who investigate specifically into black market deals involving stolen medical research, were all murdered in one quick sweep. Drew and Samantha, team five-nine, have been more than just partners since their academy training days. Safeguarding their secret tryst from everyone in their professional lives, they trust no one but themselves. But when Samantha finds herself suspiciously spared and Drew missing, she doesn’t want to believe what the CIA claims – that Drew is not only alive and has defected from their organization, but is facilitating the deaths of prominent research developers worldwide. Now the only member of Sparrow who hasn’t been killed off, Samantha finds herself under serious investigation by association – and a prisoner within her own home.
Just when she’s on the verge of being labeled a murderer and a traitor herself, Drew activates a beacon only she can see, taunting her from across the world. He knows she’s watching, and she knows he could be gone forever if she doesn't oblige his silent request. With nothing left to lose and everything to gain, Sam goes rogue to track him down and clear her good name. But when she finally catches up to her partner of four years, he hasn’t a clue who he is or what he’s done, and the men chasing him down suddenly want to acquire her as well.
Frantic yet determined, Samantha is forced to protect a man she no longer trusts in order to learn why he went astray – and why his associates are determined to retrieve him. But is Drew really a victim himself in a much greater scheme, or will his memories prove lethal, leading Sam into harm’s way like a lamb to slaughter, ultimately risking the life of the only member of Sparrow he managed to save?

This book really surprised me...in a bad way. I really enjoyed this author’s Nearly series so I was expecting the same for this romantic suspense read; however, to enjoy this book required a major suspension of disbelief (which I’m not capable of) and an acceptance of a horrific plot twist near the end of the story (which I still can’t accept by the way), so sadly, this book didn’t quite work for me. To be honest, I was so angry when I finished I thought about slapping a 1 star on the book and calling it a day. But after taking a day to mull things over, there were a few things about the story I liked which is why I went with a 2.5 star rating instead.
The story certainly grabbed my attention from the very first page – it was fast-paced, nerve-wracking, and immediately transported me into this futuristic(ish) world where government agencies and other third parties vied for advanced technology and scientific research. The story flashes to a specific CIA team – Sparrow 59 – and their mission to extract data. However, things are botched up when Sam (the heroine) realizes her entire team is wiped out besides her and on top of which, Drew (the hero) is missing. Not willing to believe that her real-life partner defected from the agency and sold them out, she makes it her goal to find out the truth behind her team’s assassination and more importantly, to find Drew.
Up until the 90% mark, I liked the story. It was entertaining and kept my attention but nothing was mindblowing...at least not yet. Just when I thought the ending would deliver a smashing conclusion to the story, I was greatly surprised by the plot twist and it blew my mind all right, just in the worst way possible. I don’t want to directly spoil what happens but I think with this kind of twist, the author was aiming for a heroic approach and it totally failed to work on me. Depending on how the twist is portrayed, it’ll either induce tears or make my blood boil, and since I didn’t particularly love any of these characters to begin with, I ended up steaming mad.
Another thing that bothered me were all the references to advanced technology that made me think this story was more futuristic and leaning towards the sci-fi genre, even though it’s not. The gadgets, memory resoration/wiping, etc…just wasn’t portrayed in enough detail in my opinion, so I had a hard time accepting their roles in this book.
I did like the writing style as it’s laidback and casual, making it super easy for me to ‘get into’ and despite being annoyed with certain events in the story, I was never bored so this was a rather quick read for me. Even though I’m not a big fan of this book, I will definitely be checking out the next one regardless because I need my closure.
Sparrow 59 is a romantic suspense thriller featuring spies and isn’t a standalone. I personally wouldn’t categorize it as NA because aside from the characters’ ages, nothing about this book has any aspects of a typical NA read. Low steam level as well. There is a slight cliffhanger but I wasn’t bothered by it much as it ends on a high note.
Samantha and Drew are members of a specialized CIA team called Sparrow, a team dedicated to retrieving stolen medical research that is being sold on the black market. Samantha and Drew are posing as a married couple in order to maintain their cover, but in secret, the two are a couple in real life as well.
After a successful mission, Samantha finds herself the sole survivor of an attack on the entire Sparrow team. Except for Drew who has completely disappeared. The evidence suggesting Drew may be a traitor keeps piling up and Samantha must decide whether or not to believe in the man she’s in love with, or to label him a defected agent like everyone else already has. That’s when Drew activates a beacon that only she can see, and she must make the choice to go to him or not.
I don’t even know where to start. This book surpassed any expectations I had. By that I mean I didn’t really know what to expect from this book and I immensely enjoyed what I read. This was a thrilling story that sucked me in right away and didn’t let me go. I read the first half of the book in one sitting and ended up only getting 4 hours of sleep because I had stayed up reading!
Sparrow 59 is not strictly a romance novel nor is it strictly a spy novel, there was a bit of both mixed in to make it the perfect combination. I’m not normally a spy or thriller novel kind of girl, but I really enjoyed the plot in this book. As readers we get a fast paced plot with the added bonus of a great romance! The romance is a bit cleaner than most New Adult books, but it was a sweet one that had me rooting for the characters from Chapter 1.
“You call that a catch? They need to send you back to knight-in-shining-armor school.” “And they need to send you back to charm school. A thank you would have sufficed.”
Devon Ashley’s greatest strength as a writer is in her characters. Despite not knowing a lot about Samantha or Drew I was able to connect with them right off the bat even though I really have zero zip zilch in common with them. Even the side characters (who shall remain nameless so as not to ruin the plot) had me growing attachments to them very easily.
I can’t really go into my favorite parts of the book without giving away any spoilers, but I will say that there is a twist that Devon Ashley threw in the book that pulled at my heartstrings for the majority of the story. You just have to read it yourself to know what I am talking about.
I will give you one big warning though, this book ends on a semi-cliffhanger! I know people are strict about that so I felt a warning was necessary, but I still urge you to read the book if you don’t like cliffhanger’s anyway and make up your own mind.

Sparrow 59 (The Sleepers' Coalition Book 1) was an anusual choice for me as generally I am rather skeptical of both terms "spy" and "romance". Thankfully the synopsis made me give Devon Ashley and her latest series a try - I am now eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
Sparrow 59 had me hooked from the start and I found myself devouring each chapter, with bated breath, to unravel the story of Drew.
The spy element was entertaining, reminiscent of James Bond, and of course of The Bourne Identity with regard to Drew. Although there is a clear focus on the personal romantic relationship between Sam and Drew, I would definitely not refer to this tale as a "romance".
I know many readers have been disappointed by how this story unfolded, and many have felt that it finished on a cliff-hanger. I would say that I truly enjoyed this book because of its integrity in continuing its plot realistically, as it had been set up for quite some time - there was truly no other way to go - and as such the ending did not come as a surprise to me, and I feel that there was a very clear and well defined conclusion, which then beautifully sets up the second part of this series, which promises to have a completely diffent focus.
I truly enjoyed Devon Ashley's writing style and the clever switch of POV for three chapters, which made the climax of the book so much more dramatic and engaging.
I have also lined myself up to read more from this author; next on my list are: - The Complete Falling Novels: "One girl, two crushes. One in the real world, one in the dream world. What could possibly go wrong?" - Nearly Broken (Nearly #1): "We’d both gone missing at one point, but Claire had one thing I didn’t. Someone to notice. So why was I the one still here and she the one still gone?"
The first thing I saw when looking into this book was that it was compared to Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Bourne Identity. When I read that, I knew that this novel was for me. It's got the spy stuff (which I LOVE) and then its got the romance and excitement and suspense and what a wondrous combination it is!
I've read another novel by Devon Ashley, so I figured that I would enjoy this one as well. And man, did I ever. I couldn't seem to get enough. I positively devoured this novel. It was such an interesting spin on spies and I thought that with the characters being so young that it would really add a new twist and it did. Devon Ashley did a marvelous job in this basically barren New Adult/Spy sub-genre. To be honest, I really didn't know how this novel would go ... you would think that writing romancey-new adult novels would be a bit different from cranking one of these things out. Anyhow ...
As I've come to expect from Devon Ashley, the characters were very well written. I, once again, found myself connecting with each of the main characters even though I really had nothing in common with them. And that's a weird thing to transpire - I have NOTHING in common with these characters ... I'm not in my 20's, I wasn't living on the streets, I'm not a spy and countless other differentiations. Yet, I could really see myself in each of them. It was the weirdest thing. But that's the power of a great writer ... they can make you have some sort of connection with things that are so far out of your realm.
The story itself was really interesting. I didn't find myself skipping paragraphs to get away from boring parts or skimming pages because I just wanted to push through. No, I blazed through this whole thing because I was so excited to get to the end. Speaking of which ... the end was ... the end was bullshit. I was completely shocked and amazed and pissed and about 9 billion other things. Oh, this next one better come out soon, that's all I have to say.
When I saw Sparrow 59 on NetGalley, I wasn't so sure if I wanted to get it for review or not because I don't usually read (romantic) spy thrillers. In the end, though, I was so glad I did decide to get it because it was such a great book and so different from the books I usually read. I can't say it's the best book ever, in my eyes, but I really did enjoy it. Also, I read it so fast! Seriously, I barely put my Kindle down!
The thing that hooked me the most, I guess, was the mystery about what happened to Drew and why he disappeared, only to reappear again in compromising places. I also really liked reading about the main characters Samantha and and of course Drew. Although we get more of Sam's point of view than Drew's, I really liked to read from both of them.
Sam was a fantastic character. She kicked ass and I love how she left everything behind to go after Drew, even though it gets her in more trouble with the CIA than she already was. And I just loved Drew. I really enjoyed his point of view, which came more towards the end, but it was still interesting to take a peak inside his head.
The ending was pretty brutal. I'm still not sure what really happened since it ended so abrubtly. Damn cliffhanger, I both love and loathe them. So yeah, I'm really looking forward to the next book to find out what happened and how it will
Fast-paced with lots of action, mystery and romance, Sparrow 59 was unexpectly a very enjoyable and engaging new adult book. The writing was great, the story never got boring and the characters kicked ass. Go read it!
So who would I cast for the duo in my new adult romantic spy thriller? Well, Drew's gotta be a broody-looking brunette, calm enough to counter the sassy and opinionated Sam. So of course I could easily picture someone like Theo James and Sophia Bush. Jamie Campbell Bower and Morgan Freeman would also be my faves for secondary roles.
This book description had me captured with the Mr. & Mrs. Smith crossed with The Bourne Identity. I am a huge fan for stories with spy, and the added powerful female role was just a bonus. Drew and Samantha have made quite a life out of nothing, but it is a bittersweet success. Now at the beck and call of the CIA they are living a lie, and it is obvious things are about to take a turn for the worse. The story definitely takes off running when we jump right into a mission with Drew and Sam hanging from a balcony. The pace is set very quickly, and the action is packed. The conclusion has left my heartbroken, but I am anxious to see if there can be a sequel with a happy ending. I just can not accept were we have been left in this book. So here is until I get the chance to see book two. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer Jax~
The novel follows the two protagonists Drew and Samantha who are members of a special CIA team named Sparrow, that investigates black market deals involving stolen medical research. And their missions might even require them to steal back this stolen information.Drew and Sam are partners and so much more.Their cover is that of a married couple but in reality also they are secretly married and they've been together since the Academy days.
The book starts off with Sam dangling off a balcony while they are on one such mission. At this point itself I knew I was gonna love the book.Soon they return from the mission. But within some time all members of the Sparrow are found dead, except for Sam and it turns out that Drew is missing.Eventually, many medical researchers start turning up dead and the CIA gets proof that Drew was near each of the crime scenes. They start believing that he defected and that he killed the researchers, also that he helped in killing off the members of Sparrow.
The CIA also suspect that Sam might be helping Drew and put her under constant surveillance and confine her to her house. She doesn't want to believe what they are saying about him but as time passes she slowly starts losing hope. But one day Drew activates a special beacon which enables Sam to know his whereabouts. So, she takes a gamble and goes rogue hoping she can find out why Drew left and also clear her name in the process.
But when she finds Drew he doesn't seem to remember anything including his own name. Also he is being hunted by his (alleged)associates (the ones killing the researchers) because apparently he has stolen something from them.So Sam is now caught in a rock and hard place as she has to protect the guy she loves ,even though she doesn't trust him, and must dig up what is happening before it is too late.
I'm a big fan of Devon Ashley's writing and it isn't a surprise that I loved Sparrow 59 as well.Though I didn't love it as much as the Nearly series it still managed to surpass my expectations.I mean, come on, where else could you find a Romantic Spy thriller in the NA category??Most NA books these days have the same formulaic love stories.I loved Drew and Sam's relationship. You could see how much they loved each other. And they've only ever had each other as they both grew up and survived alone. It's also sweet that we get to see Drew fall all over for Sam for a second time. The spy stuff and the action scenes were super cool and believable!!
"He grabbed my hands with his, allowing our fingers to intermingle in a way I wished the rest of our bodies could. In a nicer reality, that was. One where we got to live out our lives in that cute little home we abandoned, had normal jobs, fought about stupid shit that didn’t really matter and eventually had two kids, a dog and a cat. Was that really so outrageous to want?"
I just wish we had more interaction with secondary characters. But I guess when you go rogue you really can't depend on anyone but yourself.I believe we'll get to see more of Lars in the second book. And speaking of the ending, what was that??Seriously Ms.Ashley!!If a certain person isn't alive in the second book I don't know what I'll do.. So, what are you guys waiting for??Enter the giveaway and go read the book!! The review can be found here
"Sparrow 59" by Devon Ashley was a terrific book and since it finished on a cliffhanger of sorts, I'm looking forward to the sequel. Lucky for you, you can buy it right now as the publication date passed just a month ago. It's got great ratings, all in the fours and fives and I'll be adding my own 5 of 5 rating to that spectacular success. Let me tell you about this really fun book.
"The Bourne Identity meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith" has been used to describe this thriller and I'd have to heartily agree. What more would you want? Spies, cool tech stuff, amazing CIA training, chases across the world, great banter between characters and possibly a tragic love story all rolled into one! Yep, it's a rip roaring thrill ride that's perfect for a boring and cold February evening.
Samantha and Drew have been partners since they were recruited by the CIA out of Langley. Now, they are doing undercover work is as a married couple who are part of "SPARROW", a specialty CIA team of operatives investigating and recovering stolen medical research. After a successful op everyone involved in SPARROW is dead except Sam and Drew. Sam was found unconscious at the scene and Drew is missing.
The CIA think Drew is involved in the massacre so they are watching Sam, the other member of team 5-9. When a beacon that only Sam can see is activated, indicating that Drew is alive and needs her help, she must decide to become a fugitive herself or leave Drew out in the cold to fend for himself. So starts a gripping, suspense-filled mystery/thriller that you'll have trouble putting down.
I loved this book. It is a rare thing to find a writer that both writes good characters who feel and have flaws and also be able to inject good, fast paced scenarios that keeps the reader engaged and not bored. I found myself really enjoying getting to know Sam, the main character in this, the first book in the series "The Sleeper's Coalition". I liked how human she was and how well the author fleshed out her personality. "Sparrow 59" was an easy read and so well worth the lost sleep I suffered as I read well into the night to finish this thriller. I warn you, all answers will NOT found at the end of this book but your curiosity will be so piqued that you'll be sending pleading emails to Ms. Ashley to write the next book quickly. This is a five out of five for me because it was such fun to read with no effort needed to enjoy it.
Have you seen the author's "who would you cast?" post below? Spot. On. :-)
So, the book... my first thought it, that ending - whyyyyyyy?!
Ok, let me back up a bit. This book is a standard spy-thriller-mystery in the vein of the Bourne Identity, but told from the perspective of a female spy. At the end of a successful op, Sam, Drew, and their teammate Lance are waiting for extraction when the unthinkable happens - someone gets the drop on them. Now Lance and the rest of Team Sparrow are dead, Drew is missing-presumed-defector, and the CIA thinks that Sam is somehow involved in keeping Drew hidden. That would be bad enough, but Sam and Drew haven't just been spies playing a married couple, they are actually husband and wife, and Sam has every intention of tracking Drew down and figuring out what happened.
Sam is a balanced, well-written character. She can't magically do everything and doesn't come out of every fight unscathed. I like how the author chose to stage her relationship with Drew (i.e. I'm glad that it started before they were partnered together, rather than the typical, "we were thrown together and now we're in love" ridiculousness that I read so often). It's fun to read a spy novel that has a female protagonist who is a competent professional, not just the bait for a honey-trap.
The plot of the book pretty much proceeds as you'd expect, right up until the last 10 pages or so. Prepare yourself for a rough ending, my friends. I do think it is a good ending for the story, and I'm definitely intrigued to see where the author takes things in the next two books that I see entries for on Goodreads (although there's no release date for those yet.)
A bit of a sidenote: I enjoyed the bio-research aspect of the plot - it gives the whole story an original twist. That said, I'd like to see more of that included in the next two books (what chemicals are they using/making and how/why?) Details like that, which can educate a reader without them really being aware of how much they're learning, are one of my favorite literary devices, and are a hallmark of good writing!
I’ve been waiting for Sparrow 59 to come out for almost a year now. When the author described it to me as The Bourne Identity for romance readers (I’m paraphrasing here), I was hooked because sometimes I like to add a little thrill and adventure to my normal reading routine.
The story revolves around Sam and Drew, two CIA operatives who are undercover as a married couple. Together, they work for a small secret organization who work on stealing back important research that was stolen from the original developers. Confused? It’s actually not hard to understand once you are reading. Although it has a very Bourne Identity feel to it, the general concepts are pretty easy to follow as long as you pay attention while reading.
After a mission goes bad, Sam is the only member left alive from her team with the exception of Drew who is missing and/or dead. This book has a definite romantic undertone. After all, the whole point of the book is Sam trying to save the man she loves even though he might have betrayed and framed her.
I enjoyed Sam and Drew’s characters. Their development could maybe have a bit stronger but that may have detracted from the spy/thriller storyline. They have a lot of backstory together (hence, the romance part) but that part is not the focus of the story. Even though their development is a bit superficial, you still get a good feel for their love for each other. Overall, the story flows nicely and keeps you interested. There is some cussing, sex is certainly mentioned but it’s not overly graphic and while there is violence, it’s not incredibly detailed. In other words, it’s a fairly safe read but there is enough grit there to make it realistic.
For a spy/thriller, it’s not particularly dark and I considered it a pretty light read until the end. My poor heart ached for Drew and Sam and the end just killed me. There will be a second book in the series and I’m not sure where the storyline is headed but I know I’ll want to check it out. Definitely recommended for someone looking for a fun and adventurous read.
Sparrow 59 is hugely different than any book I have read recently. Devon Ashley combines romance, action and espionage to create Mission Impossible meets James Bond! Sam is a member of the Sparrow program, working for the CIA as a retrieval operative. After a successful mission in Germany, Sam is hit with a tranquilizer dart whilst the rest of her Sparrow team members are being killed. All but Drew, her partner, who disappears. Sam’s relationship with Drew is difficult; they complete their CIA missions as a married couple, but in private their real marriage is a secret. Sam returns back to the CIA headquarters, desperate to find Drew, but after a month of no contact it is obvious that the both of them will be used as scapegoats for the destruction of the Sparrow project. Until the moment Drew unexpectedly makes contact with Sam and she sets of on a one-woman rescue mission. The story is told from Sam’s point of view, allowing us to understand her situation and emotions. When the couple are reunited, under difficult circumstances they are forced to concentrate on saving their own lives, rather than rebuilding their relationship. Devon Ashley carefully mixes the romantic content of the story, with the danger, reminding us of the couple’s humanity, even though they spend much of their time holding a gun! Much of Sparrow 59 is fast-paced and Devon Ashley is not afraid of making her reader uncomfortable, which is particularly true of the books last few chapters. Sparrow 59 would be an ideal choice for readers who are looking for a change from their usual genre and I am already looking forward to its sequel.
I can't believe I've had this book in my TBR for so long! THIS IS A MUST READ for all action-suspense lovers out there. But hey, I prefer my romance books and I loved it, so I guess this is must read for all lovers of great story.
The first chapter intrigued me, the second, kept me going and going and going, until I realized that I'm totally hooked! My heart was beating fast during their runs, and it was breaking for Sam after their first mission. Honestly, I really couldn't put it down!
The story, like Ive said, is very addicting; the writing really takes you inside the book; the characters, you just want to punch somebody just so you can help them; and the writing - well done! I couldn't ask for more!
Well, aside from the next book, that is! I can't wait for the next book!!!
The story follows 2 young CIA agents Drew and Samantha, they have secretly become a real married couple that the CIA is unaware of. After a mission all hell breaks loose, Drew goes missing and the rest of their team ends up dead. The CIA receives information that Drew may have defected and it looks like he may have been killing members of their team, Samantha cannot believe this, Drew sets off a beacon showing his whereabouts and Samantha is hoping she is there in time to help Drew get out of whatever is going on. I truly enjoyed this suspenseful book from beginning to the end. Can’t wait to read book 2.
I love a great spy book. I don't need it to be sexy but this had sex appeal a sexy CIA agent, and an awesome story line. I was immediately routing for the heroine and loved the premise of the book. It left me needing more.

I am going to attempt to keep this short, and rather vague (sorry but I just don’t wan to ruin any of the fun that is reading through this and learning everything as you go). But I shall do my best to tell you about this awesomeness, with the help of some sweet pics and gifs along the way, of course!
I have read my fair share of Devon Ashley books, and I can say one thing you can always be sure of when you are reading something of hers, is that it’s going to be something fresh. Something a little different from anything else you’ve been reading. Devon Ashley gives good book. She always gives me something I didn’t even know I wanted until I got it, and Sparrow 59 is no exception. I adored this book! I enjoyed the spy thriller aspect just as much as I did the smoldering romance between Sam and Drew. Which BTW I totally agree the author’s dream casting for these characters
I was so intrigued by the covert Sparrow group. I loved seeing them as a stealthy powerful unit, and I loved it even more once the shit really hit the fan and we got to see a few of it’s operatives branch out and navigate the dangerous world of secret spies and enemies all alone, some without any knowledge of what is even going on around them, or who they even are! I mean who isn’t into a good government group of badasses shrouded in secrecy?
Sam was an amazing heroine. I just freaking loved that she was the leading lady, and how kick ass she was. It was nice to see a strong, smart lady ride in and save the guy for a change!
It was non stop action right from the very beginning, up until the shocking ending. High adrenaline, swoon worthy fun. I was really left guessing what was going on throughout most of this story, but it was one hell of a ride figuring it out right along side Drew and Sam. That ending though…..BRUTAL!!! I am in awe. I was not expecting that at all!
You are an evil sorceress, Devon Ashley. You have charmed me completely with your wicked ways! I can’t wait to see what happens next! First book in The Sleepers Coalition has started, and ended, with one hell of a bang! I will just be here desperately, and shamelessly awaiting teasers and scraps from the second book. Well done, Mrs.Ashley!
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
This is very much a wonderful NA book that combines Mrs. And Mr. Smith, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and realistic vulgar humor. There's something for everyone in here; action, humor, romance, mild sexy times, more action. Just a heck a lot of action. For fans of AOS, this is basically a SkyeWard AU, and a really great one at that. You've got your kickass heroine who grew up in foster homes, who's always aware of her surroundings and eventually learns to fight. Then you've got your brooding muscley guy who is in complete awe of our smart, resourceful, bad-ass female but still ends up going rouge. Take Skye's computer skills and give them to Ward and you got Sam and Drew.
I didn't think that the POV switch that happened 85% into the book would work, but it really did. The author didn't really have a choice but she made it work. True, the memory loss is cheesy and cliche but I still thought it was cute.
*ARC provided by the Author in exchange for honest review* 4 stars
This book is a thrilling and fast pace read. I enjoyed it from start to almost the finish. With me rating it 4 stars, there was one thing that I did not like. That would be the ending. Really what kind of ending was that? It really was kind of a cliffhanger to me. If I would have known about it, then I would have waited until all books are out. I can’t stand the waiting part.
I did like it. I liked Sam and Drew. I liked the twist and turn’s the author decided to take.
I also loved that it was a spy book. I usually read Military books, but spy book are now officially on my list.
Can't wait to see what happens in the next book. *sigh*
Overall: It was well written, kept my attention and was a good read. Recommended: Yes, although I would say if you don’t like kind of a cliffhanger then I would suggest you wait until the rest of the books are out.
I got this book from Netgalley as a pre-read before its official release on Dec. 16th. Overall, this was a thrilling read. The characters are like-able and the story shows some surprising twists and turns. I also like that the author didn't go out of her way to stretch the book to 400+ pages but kept it compact and fast paced so I wanted to keep reading. Not giving 5 stars means there are a few downsides. I was disappointed at the start of this book because the similarities to the movie 'Mission Impossible I' are too much. At that point I wasn't too excited to continue, expecting a bad rip off from the movie. Luckily I saw it through. Another aspect was a few pages before the end. This is where I expected something more than the way it ended. The final chapter of the book reveals the first part of the next book. Will for sure read part 2.
An ARC of this book was kindly provided by Netgalley and Devon Ashley in exchange for an honest review.
I've never read any of Ashley's novels before, but the premise of Sparrow 59 really drew me in. And I was blown away. I wasn't expecting anything more than an average, mediocre read, but this had guts. The blurb/synopsis at the beginning of the book gave a bit too much away, which made the beginning drag a little bit, but the second half was pretty engaging. Ashley managed to capture the kick-assness of a character that wasn't a murderer by default, but a little more background in their training etc. would have been welcomed. I enjoyed the realistic nature of the ending, and avidly await the second book!
