Isabelle is left stranded at the airport, and her only chance of getting home is with her boyfriend’s older brother, Harper. When this good girl and bad boy set off towards home, it turns out that maybe she’s not such a good girl after all. And even bad boys have reasons for their bad behavior.
The road trip is full of shocking revelations and unexpected emotions, bringing the two of them closer than Isabelle ever thought possible. Maybe too close.
Bridie Hall sold her first story at fourteen. Since then, she has written dozens more, translated books, studied writing, and started writing novels.
Her days revolve around stories and words, her sleepless nights involve plotting and inventing fascinating new characters. The only activity that takes up more of her time than writing, is reading.
Birdie Hall's new novel, Letting Go is a road-trip love-story. The journey is great and the attraction is quite inevitable! Well, Isabelle and Harper are stuck in a 2days long road-trip and with each passing moment, they are falling hard for each other. Letting Go is also about how to let go of some feelings without which we think we might become very insecure and vulnerable and to follow one's true heart's calling and instincts.
Thanks to the author, Birdie Hall, for giving me an opportunity to read and review her book.
Isabelle, a senior-year high-school student, who had went to Paris for her art-work. Till date she was happy and content with her life. She had nothing to fear about, she had a handsome and hot and very nice boyfriend, Jamie, who was her classmate, a childhood bestie, Chloe and her dad. But soon after reaching Atlanta, her so-called perfect life started to fall apart. Her luggage gets stolen, her boyfriend, Jamie doesn't come to pick her up, instead he sends for his elder brother, Harper to pick-her up, learning about which, her bestie, Chloe, starts teasing her about hot and brooding elder brother, Harper. Isabelle and Harper have a bittersweet relationship, more like fire and ice. As soon as Isabelle gets into the car, Harper starts bickering and teasing her by throwing tantrums. But eventually soon their journey turns out to be a myriad of different emotions. They ease up and start opening up their deepest, darkest corners in their heart. And a detour proves to be great bond between them. But soon their attraction towards each other became fatal for each other and takes them to a roller-coaster of pain and torture in their lives.
Birdie Hall has told story very sweetly and the book is very delectable. Although she has written the book in a third person manner, but the book is quite interesting to read since she has included a lot of dialogues and since they were stuck in an old Chevy, so there was not much scope to make it look interesting, hence she filled the voids with too many back-stories, which gave us an idea about Isabelle and Harper's relationship. The author has made them like the two opposites poles of a magnet and thus it was quite sweet and wonderful and emotional to read about them. Isabelle is more like control-freak, who loves her boyfriend, Jamie to death, ignores all his mistakes and wants her relationship with Jamie to be perfect. Harper is a humorous guy, a total womanizer, loves to pull Isabelle's leg. Jamie is a sweet guy who constantly tries to protect his girlfriend from his brother. Chloe proves to be a true best friend, who advices and supports Isabelle during toughest times of her life. Although they both had a dark past, maybe that's why they fell for each other, no matter how hard they tried running away from each other.
Read this book and see how Isabelle and Harper bring smile to your face and you'll might want to fall in love all over again!
I read this in 1 sitting even though I'm a slow reader. This because the book has a beautiful flow and speed of its own. I was highly impressed and will recommend this to teens I know :-) !
The author's love and knowledge of food shines through leaving you hungry for panna cotta as well as more of her words :-) .
The characters are well developed!
There is an echo of the central theme throughout the entire book, letting go, this was very well done.
Heroines relationship with her boyfriend and his brother could be more explained, everything felt so rushed, I didn't get enough information about their history together.
Also, I'm really sick of the 'two brothers in love with the same woman' trope.
Letting Go by Bridie Hall is a cute and addictive YA contemporary romance, novel - one once I started, couldn't put down.
The story follows Isabelle - a teenage girl who has just returned home from a weeks long trip to Paris. And at the airport her luggage is stolen, leaving her to call her boyfriend for help. The only problem is, her boyfriend is on vacation in Florida and sends his older brother - Harper, to help her. Isabelle has always felt uncomfortable around Harper - maybe because she's heard some pretty bad things about him, or maybe it's because deep down, Isabelle knows that there is something between the two of them, that she tries to hide. But with no other choice but to except the help from Harper - the road trip they take is soon to become very intense.
I really enjoyed Letting Go. It's been a while since I've dived into a YA contemporary romance novel and this was a great choice. I really enjoyed the way Bridie Hall set the story up and I loved how easy it was to settle into the story - how easy it was to connect to the characters and how intense it quickly became.
Isabelle and Harper were very likable characters. Even despite their problems, you could see deep down, they had something special. The problem was Isabelle let her feelings for her boyfriend cloud her judgement - she let his feelings for his brother cloud her judgement too, so she was always judging Harper before she knew the full situation. I'm glad Harper didn't give up on Isabelle though, most people probably would have with the way she treated him sometimes, but he didn't and was always so sweet to her, pushing her to step out of her comfort zone and try something new. It wasn't just a fun road trip, but it was one about finding out who the other person really was, and as you can see, I really enjoyed it.
The one thing I noticed about this story was there is a lot of dialogue between the characters. Sometimes it's needed less, and more of the characters feelings or more back story about her father/mother. It just felt sometimes that the characters were talking and talking forever, but this didn't affect my overall feelings of the story - I really enjoyed it and it's certainly worth a read if you're a fan of this genre.
A 3.5 star read. This was a very Young Adult read for me. Half of it I thoroughly enjoyed where a high school senior is on a small road trip with the older brother of her boyfriend. The girl has always just wanted a safe, stable life (her mother died young) and that is just the type of relationship she has with her boyfriend. His brother has quite a reputation (drug use, women) and the girl is a little leary of traveling with him.
But, of course, they soon start getting to know each other and finding out that not everything in life is easily explained. I loved the relationship between them on the trip.
I didn't really care for her indecisiveness or the horror she felt as her world was opened up to new ideas and new feelings, thinking she was "cheating" on her boyfriend. I would think those feelings would have been outgrown in junior high, not in a girl on the verge of going to college and just having returned from a summer in Paris.
A caution would be that this book starts very slowly, it took awhile for me to get involved. Also the writing is different, very correct English and somewhat like prose. I liked it, some people might not.
Letting Go had a lot of stuff that I love with books. It has two great main characters, an interesting love/hate relationship, and one of my ultimate favorites, a road trip. I was instantly drawn to this book because of the road trip aspect, and also the love story. For the most part I really enjoyed this book. Like I mentioned, the main characters were brilliant, and I really enjoyed their dynamic. I even thought that the use of third person narration worked well, even though I usually tend to prefer first person in books like this. Really the downside of this book is also a positive. I didn't feel like it was long enough. I loved the characters and the setting, and the developing relationship. I just didn't feel like we were shown enough of it. The book is really short, just 132 pages, and I flew through it and didn't want it to end. I wanted the trip to be longer, and I wanted there to be just a little bit more development with the characters. I wasn't ready to give these characters up, and yet I reached the end of the trip abruptly, and then the end of the book not much long after. I wanted a little bit more, because what there was of these characters, was fantastic.
Young Adult isn't my usual kind of lecture. Not that I haven't read some really good ones. I'm just more into adults stories. However I made an exception coz the plot got me curious. Especially as I know the writer well enough to know I'd enjoy this book.
And I sure wasn't disapointed. It truly is a beautiful story. The characters are so well written. Isabelle is both strong and fragile which makes her so loveable. She could be our little sister, our friend, ourselves! Harper is also interesting. I know he's supposed to be a bad boy at first but I liked him right from the start. I knew there were something more than what he let us see (what Isabelle saw in him). I wanted to know him more and I loved him more pages after pages.
It was a beautiful journey. I'm happy I took a ride with them!
I read On the Slopes by Bridie Hall and fell in love with her writing. Letting Go delivers in the best of ways. While her boyfriend is away, Isabelle is forced to accept a ride home from the airport with his brother, Harper. Harper torments her for fun, and she’s had all the fun she can handle. He makes her feel things she doesn’t want to feel—at least not with her boyfriend’s brother. Isabelle loves Jaime, a chocolate and vanilla ice cream kind of guy. He’s predictable and safe. Harper combines cookie dough with party cake, then throws sprinkles and hot fudge together just to see what happens. He possesses the passion of an artist. Isabelle understands that passion all too well, and she’s about to discover what it means to let go. You MUST READ Letting Go! You MUST!!
Letting go is a fun and fast paced story about realizing that what one might think is good for him or her is not always what one needs. It is a story that features the favorite romance novel topic of opposite attracts and ‘I love to fight with you because I love you’.
After return from her trip to Paris, Isabelle was robbed and forced to return home with her boyfriend’s older brother, Harper.
Isabelle is stranded at the airport so her boyfriend fixes her up with his brother to drive her home. Weather prolongs this road trip giving the young couple a chance to fall for each other. It is a sweet, teen romance, a great read for the YA audience. My thanks to the author and LibraryThing for a complimentary copy.
Gorgeous book!! The chemistry between Isabelle and Harper practically jumps off the pages and I wanted so badly to push their faces together and make them kiss already!
What do you do when your boyfriend's "bad boy" brother becomes more attractive, and the last thing you want to do is hurt your boyfriend? Hall in 'Letting Go' explores the dilemma Isabelle finds herself in when she is stuck on a road trip with her boyfriend's brother, Harper, ALONE. The more she gets to know him the harder the struggle becomes. Harper is also wrestling with feelings, and a personal story that makes him even more irresistible to Isabelle. An exquisite romance that will pull you in with the dialogue. Find out if these two seemingly opposites (at first) can find a way.
Isabelle is returning from Paris after some time away, and was looking forward to being picked up by her boyfriend Jamie. But there were many things Isabelle didn't expect was going to happen that day, or the days to follow. First Jamie is unable to pick her up, so she's stuck with Jamie's older brother; Harper - who she has a bittersweet relationship with, her luggage was gone when she landed in Atlanta, and to make things worse, she's got two guys vying for her affections. The thing is, they're brothers. And she's only just finding out how heartbreaking and whirlwind the next few weeks will be for the three of them. Isabelle was a great narrator and character, and I loved that there was a lot of dialogue in the novel, because I think it really set the tone and kept me interested more than usual. She was very different to Harper, and I think because he had a slightly troubled background, Isabelle was very judging of his actions and past before she really got to know the real Harper. Letting Go is a novella I could read over and over. I was captured by the storyline and was taken along for the ride for the whole car "road-trip" and the days that followed. It was addictive and fun, and I was especially drawn in by Harper and Isabelle, no matter the things that came in-between them. She knew all along when she was with Jamie that there was something between her and Harper and I think that until those early pages of the book when we really get to see them together, interacting, does she really think; we have a connection. And I know that she was with Jamie first, but torn still, and I honestly thought that Harper brought out something special in her. The whole romance was cute and light, perfect for a Novella...but I wanted more! More than a Novella! I wanted to find out what would happen after the "the end" and more. There was a sheer brilliance about the whole setting of Letting Go and I'm actually so happy that I had the chance to get to read it, because I know if I hadn't been offered to read it, I would be missing out completely. Pure sweet-romance, emotions and heartbreak, but ultimately, a love story that I loved. Perfect for Valentine's Day! And speaking of Valentine's Day, Bridie Hall has a Valentine's themed giveaway going on over on her website, so click here for a chance to win!
A heartfelt thank you to the author for asking me to read and review her book.
I've been using this week to catch up on books I'm behind on, and this one was easily the fast read I had (not the least of which being because it's also the shortest). This is a short novella about Isabelle, returning from her trip to Paris. She gets a ride home with her boyfriend's infuriating older brother...but what if he's not as infuriating as she thought? What if he's actually sweet? And sensitive?
I think their situation is actually pretty relatable, especially the part where Isabelle and her boyfriend, Jamie, feel comfortable in their relationship. So comfortable, in fact, that they may even be bored with each other. I think that's the downfall of a lot of relationships, though it manifests itself in different ways. Anyway, I thought Isabelle was a likable lead who had to struggle with her emotions in order to figure out who she was and what she wanted.
There were a few points where I thought the plot could have been a little better if the timeline didn't feel so rushed. The main action of the story takes place over less than two days. I realizes that lives can turn on their heads in far shorter amounts of time, but I think I was expecting something a little closer to Amy and Roger's Epic Detour kind of timeline. Still, I bought into the story. I just wished it took a little longer.
Overall, it's a really cute, fast read about discovering just who is right for you.
What a fantastic novel! Isabelle is left stranded at the airport, back from her trip to Paris. And guess who gets to pick her up? Her boyfriend's (Jamie) big brother, Harper, and now the journey is on. Isabelle's boyfriend is the right guy, and his big brother, Harper, is the wrong guy...or is he?
This is the first YA book that I've read in a while that honestly took me back to a time when I was a teenager. This is a scenario I could totally see happening!
Harper has a dark past in contrast to his little brother's bright future and clean history. It would appear that Harper is a womanizing, reckless hottie, while Jamie is the good golden boy.
The great thing Ms. Hall did was while the road trip lasted for two days, she covered a lot of miles. I loved the way the author flashed back to past experiences between Isabelle and Harper. It built the chemistry between the two and justified the budding feelings.
As I discovered Harper's haunting past and how he worked through it...I cheered all that much more for him. Having a love interest shared between two brothers is not an easy thing to pull off without someone coming out the other end a bad guy, but I have to say, this author did it flawlessly.
I felt like I was on the road with Isabelle and Harper. What an incredibly sweet, passionate, and tender read! I LOVED Letting Go!
This is a short story, but not so short it only takes half an hour to read! I loved the story and the journey it took it's characters on, literally.
Isabella is stranded at the airport after returning from Paris, her luggage stolen. Her only chance of getting home is her boyfriend Jamie's brother, Harper.
We get a slight hint at the very start that Isabella may have feelings for Harper, but then we are left not knowing what has gone on before. However, during the journey home, we get to know a lot of personal things about them.
The journey is quite cathartic for both of them. Being in such close proximity feelings are heightened, and they begin to confide in each other about their pasts. As they talk Isabella begins to realise that the image she had of Harper is based on what people have told her. There is a lot more to him than she first assumes.
Isabella and Harper soon discover that going on this journey may well change things for both of them, as well as others.
The author manages to keep us guessing a lot in this book, as we are unaware of what has gone on previously between the characters. We learn bits and pieces as the story goes on, which helps explain what we already think we know.
All in all a really good story, which is written well. It is a story which anyone from teenagers to adults could enjoy reading, and I definitely recommend it.
When Isabelle is stranded at the airport, desperate to get out, she rides with bad boy Harper, the older brother of her clean-cut boyfriend, Jamie. Isabelle stereotypes Harper, but the long ride home gives them time to get to know each other. Harper is much deeper than Isabelle realizes. She’s also filled with ambivalence. Jamie is her boyfriend, but she also has feelings for Harper. I liked the storyline, and my favorite part was the dialogue between the two of them. This is a fast, sweet, contemporary YA read.
I always love stories where the two people don't always get along and then when you are reading you realize why one of the characters is the way they are. I was drawn to the story when I read the blurb and saw it was a road trip between two characters who basically don't get along. This was a good read. The characters were well written and I adored the ending.I only wish it had been a bit longer. Overall a cute Young Adult read.
This is one of those books you just cant put down until you get to the end of it. Will it happen like you think it will or it won`t? And just when you think you really know the next step it turns in totally different direction and surprises you. At the end of course you can start breathing normally again. :) Great book ... and I can`t wait to read another one from this author.
I read the sort of sequel 'my summer roommate' (focusing on Isabelle's best friend Chloe) before I started this one and I didn't think this could be any better but it was! I wish the ending wasn't so rushed but it was brilliant either way, I would love a proper sequel to this. Really enjoyable read that I finished in one sitting.
I really like the ideas for this story, but I thought there could have been more dramatic love scenes. And I just thought it was a bit weird how she finally realised she liked Harper on the road trip.
I wish the book was longer... there were so many things that could have been explored in greater detail, like Jamie's sudden trip to Florida to namne one
