“As a visionary, asking for help is the single most important way to thrive.”

This is my first Goodreads Giveaway I have won! Woo Hoo! When I read the synopsis I knew I had to read it. I aim to be transparent on here and even though this book was less than 200 pages, it took me a lot longer than it needed to finish it. The last few weeks, my brain has been occupied by a high fantasy series which I started a few weeks ago and it was difficult to pivot from high fantasy to nonfiction and personal development. With that said, I am glad I persevered and gave this book the attention it deserves.

It is exactly what I was looking for without knowing I was looking for it specifically! I have been a part of the corporate world for 10 years. Those years have thought me a great deal of things, all for which I am thankful. However, in recent years I have been pondering my next steps. Will I continue to stay in my current position or do I want more for myself? After some thought, I realized that I would like to work on being a good leader who leads with empathy, supports and cares for my team. I want to make a difference even if it’s with one person. Erin Diehl’s Energy U is right up that alley. I was enrolled me into the course from the moment I entered the giveaway. The whole time I was reading this book, I felt like I was discussing empathetic leadership with Erin Diehl over coffee. Like having a chat with your big sister who makes you laugh while she provides insightful and valuable advice. Not only are there multiple case studies from Erin Diehl’s life she has learned from, but she also includes exercises to practice solo and with your team. Each exercise has a couple of debrief questions at the end to help you reflect. When I began reading I See You: A Leader’s Guide to Energizing Your Team Through Radical Empathy, I did NOT expect to get emotional. I went in thinking…”This will have some insightful information I can note and utilizing moving forward.” There WAS a lot of insightful information, AND I got emotional during the last chapter which led me to cry. Not exactly sure, why I cried…maybe it was because I wasn’t ready to end the chat I was engrossed in, maybe the type of leadership Erin Diehl described is one I strive to work for and be a part of in the near future, or maybe it was because she saw me. She saw the potential of being the leader my heart wants to be when in today’s society it almost feels impossible to achieve. Whatever the reason, I am thankful to have been selected as a winner and received this book when I did.

If you are wanting to level up your life, become a more empathetic leader with actionable steps, funny puns, inspiring case studies, this book is for you! I highly recommend giving it a read even if you aren’t fully ready to step into the leader role. It has great information which can be applied to your day to day life, your personal and professional relationship will also benefit in the long run. But more importantly, YOU will benefit from this in one way or another.

I am adding this book in my resources arsenal to reference, re-read and utilize the activities for years to come!!

"I See You!: A Leader's Guide to Energizing Your Team Through Radical Empathy" by Erin Diehl is an illuminating masterpiece that redefines leadership through a lens of compassion and understanding. Diehl's insightful exploration of radical empathy offers a transformative approach to team dynamics, emphasizing the power of genuine connection in fostering a thriving work environment.

This book is a beacon for leaders seeking to inspire and empower their teams, as Diehl skillfully demonstrates how empathy can be leveraged as a catalyst for innovation, collaboration, and ultimately, success. Through compelling anecdotes and practical strategies, she illustrates the profound impact of acknowledging and valuing the individual experiences and perspectives of team members.

"I See You!" is not just a guidebook; it's a manifesto for a new era of leadership—one rooted in empathy, authenticity, and inclusivity. Diehl's refreshing perspective challenges conventional notions of leadership, inviting readers to embrace vulnerability and compassion as strengths rather than weaknesses.

In a world where genuine connection is often overlooked in the pursuit of productivity, "I See You!" serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact of empathy in driving both personal and organizational growth. I won a copy of this book, and I’m obsessed with it! Erin brings real examples to all leaders about having empathy and supporting yourself and the people around you. I am now a student of Energy U and hope to be a Jen to anyone I lead. I love that there are practical questions and ideas of what to do, both for an individual and as a group.

I highly recommend that you read this and do the activities for yourself. Live in it for a while, then start to work on the dynamics of your team. Erin’s example of what a visionary leader is and how she defines soft skills is so insightful. As an HR person, soft skills can be the biggest challenge. This book offers great strategies to tackle that.

What sets this book apart from other leadership books I have read are the activities. I relate to this leadership style so I appreciate the school of thought. There are definitely some people I have come across that could benefit from reading this.

I See You is a book about building energy within your team. There are practical, and sometimes silly, exercises ending each chapter. The idea is that if we can develop our empathy for those on our team, it will improve relationships and outcomes. There are some good ideas here. The empathy theme is probably stretched too thin because leadership sometimes requires difficult decisions that an overemphasis on empathy may make nearly impossible. Empathy can be an enemy of excellence.

Erin writes just like she leads her team - with humor, wisdom, and empathy. Few books make you laugh out loud, stop to really think about how amazing Oprah is, provide tangible lessons on leadership, teach accessible improv-based exercises for you to try individually and with your team, and end with a poem. I’d venture a guess that only one book does that, actually!
