Make Westing

For seven weeks the Mary Rogers had been between 50 degrees south in the Atlantic and 50 degrees south in the Pacific, which meant that for seven weeks she had been struggling to round Cape Horn. For seven weeks she had been either in dirt, or close to dirt, save once, and then, following upon six days of excessive dirt, which she had ridden out under the shelter of the redoubtable Terra del Fuego coast, she had almost gone ashore during a heavy swell in the dead calm that had suddenly fallen.

About the author

John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.

London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.

His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".

كنت أفكر من مدة طويلة بأن اذهب في رحلة بحرية (كروز) في أوروبا او امريكا الجنوبية او استراليا ونيوزيلندا ، ولكنني أخاف من البحر ويأتيني دوار حقير بمعنى الكلمة عندما اركب قاربا او حتى سفينة صغيرة، والان بعد قراءة هذه القصة ربما لن اذهب في رحلة بحرية، إذ قد يكرهني القبطان ويفتت رأسي ببكرة الشراع مثل قشر البيضة 😭😭😭

راجع القبطان دان كولين بإعجاب محاولته الأدبية في الكتابة ، ثم جفف قلم الحبر، وأغلق السجل، أشعل سيجارا وحدق الى المشهد أمامه. شعر بأن السفينة "ماري روجرز" ترتفع، وتميل ثم ترتفع بقوة فعرف أنها تبحر بسرعة تسع عقد، ارتسمت ببطء ابتسامة رضا على وجهه الأسمر المشعر، وعلى أي حال فقد اتجه غربا ونجح في خداع الحظ

كـ عادة ما ألفتُه عند قراءة أعمال جاك لندن أجدني أمام لمحه عن موقف يبدو تأريخ لحدث حقيقي أكثر منه حكايه أدبيه لها مغزى حتى وإن كان ذاك المغزى هو المتعه .. التفاصيل جيده حتى أنها تبدو إستعراضيه نوعاً ما من الكاتب في بعض الأحيان نظراً لعدم إحتياج القارئ لمعرفتها ؛ أما السرد على بساطته إلا أنه يتناول جانب أخلاقي بشكل "كليشيه"وإن كان يجب الأخذ في الإعتبار أن القصه مكتوبه منذ أكثر من 100 عام وهو ما يجعلها مقبوله نسبياً

There are two stories in this issue by authors who are famous well outside the mystery field, Jack London and Robert Louis Stevenson. London's story, "Make Westing," is about crime and morality but it is fundamentally a sea story. It succeeds very well in both aspects.

This story is for sea loving people. Even though it deals with morality, how we act in time of peril and the risks that people in command have to assume the language Jack uses is rough and smells of sea for the whole time- i think it's a major accomplishment, just like Hemingway's The Man and the Sea

القصة هدفها الوحيد هو التشاؤم و كيف هوس التطيُّر ممكن يؤدي بالشخص إلى الجنون و حتى للقتل بس لمجرد الظن بأن فلان منحوس الطالع .

سرد القصة و تفاصيلها سطحي و ممكن البعض يحسها بدون هدف.
نهايتها أكثر شيء يقهر .
