"Unless it is mad, passionate, extraordinary love, it's a waste of time. There are too many mediocre things in life- love should not be one of them"

Christy McKellen, an English author, have spun an enchanting love story, in her latest book, Holiday with a Stranger that revolves around a workaholic and bossy woman taking a break from her office hum-drum to make peace with her arrogant attitude, little did she knew orgasms were the best remedy to soften her soul.

To be fair: I'm not that judgmental when it comes to reading Mills & Boons or Harlequin books. I believe we all need to read a little bit of fairytale romance sometime to lose oneself in the beauty of it.

Synopsis:

"Who are you?"

After three months of traveling, all Connor Preston wants to do is sink into his own bed. The last thing he expects is to find a stark-naked woman already there….

Josie Marchpane wasn't anticipating company either. Connor may be six feet four inches of pure muscle and boast a disturbingly sexy smile, but a fortnight in the South of France is the one thing standing between Josie and her sanity—and she's not about to give it up without a fight!

Because Josie plays to win. The problem? Connor does, too. And with only one bed between them, things are about to get interesting.

Josie, the workaholic, is taking a break from her business to deal with her hotheadedness and depression. Instead a tall, olive-skinned and hot man breaks her from her peace when they realized that both Josie and Connor have to share their little French apartment, since Josie works for Connor's sister, and she happens to be the owner of that apartment. They make a deal that Connor will sleep on the couch and Josie on the bed, but their undeniable attraction is drawing them like two opposite poles of magnet. And soon their attraction turns into hot and passionate lusty affair where they couldn't get enough of each other, but will their just-for-pleasure affair make them fall for each other with their hearts and emotions?

The storyline is nice and the emotions run deep in this book. The narrative is compelling enough to keep us on the loops! The chemistry and the love-making scenes described by the author are compassionate enough to make us feel it with our very hearts. The prose is easy and free-flowing thus giving a fast pace to the story. The story unfolded beautifully, without much drama. In fact the characters felt believable and are developed strongly. The descriptions are intricately detailed out in this story, thus allowing us to visualize the whole story in front of our eyes.

In short, it's a passionate love story that is not too cheesy or corny and the emotional pull between the two primary characters are strong enough to fall for them.

Verdict: A perfect weekend read!

No guy wants to come home after weeks out on the road to find a beautiful naked woman in his bed, no wait that's a lie, most men do!

But not Connor Preston, he's tired and totally beat, all he wants his a good nights rest after weeks of very uncomfortable sleep.

But instead of his nice clean, cool sheets he finds a very naked and very tempting Josie wrapped up in his sheets, oh and the sheets are no longer clean either!

Wish just makes the situation worse, but it being late Connor reluctantly agrees to take the couch for the evening and have a stand off with the stranger in his bed in the morning. But when morning comes Josie refuses to leave, instead telling him she calls dips on his house!

Connor of course goes from slightly annoyed to outright furious and so begins the tumble of wits, conflicts, sexual energy so electrifying the pages nearly went up in flames and the journey to finally learning to stand up and fight.

I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book! It was so unbelievably perfect in every way it felt as if I was reading a best seller before it has even come close to the shelves! The author's characters were stunning and extremely realistic they not only creep into my heart but deep into my soul.

I loved how the author showed both the characters as feisty yet, also cautious of actually taking steps towards achieving goals they do not even really realize they need. It showed them both as I recon a lot of us are in real life, we don't realize what is is that we need to do until it hits us with such a force it sends us down a spiraling hill that it seems impossible we will be able to get back up. For some it is too late but for others it is just the push they need.

The backdrop settings were so exquisite I was blown away by the author's vivid and intense descriptions, I could actually touch and hear each and every little detail being given. The dialogue was one filled with intense reality and left a very big impact on me as reader.

I'm taking away a message of life has a way of bringing someone into our lives to show us just what it is we are meant to be doing, yet if we do not stand up and take notice we will soon be trying to claw our way back up the the hill, and as we all know without help it will take much longer or not happen at all.

Someone comes knocking or in the case of Connor and Josie, ends up sleeping in your bed, pay attention before it's too late, life is trying to send you a message.

I HIGHLY recommend this read for each and every single romance fan. It was sweet, sensual, incredibly sexy and just plain amazing!!!

Hats off to Christy McKellen :). If you like your romances sizzling with the pressure of sexual tension, then this baby is for you. How she does it is beyond me but the moment you start reading, you're hooked. The language Ms McKellen uses lets you know in no uncertain terms that when these two get together, worlds will collide. I admire how Ms McKellen stirs up the tension and then lets it explode in such an immensely tasteful and satisfying way. Both Josie and Connor come with their own baggage and with each other, work it through so that you are left feeling that this pair really could make it. This book has it all, chemistry flying from each page but what's more, the pair have a real connection that results in a totally believable HEA. I know Christy, and hope, so very much hope that this kind of writing will rub off on me too :). Good reading, everyone.

Arc Review

Two strangers. One Bed. A lot of tension to burn 🔥😉
When Connor returns to his holiday home in the South of France from his worldwide work travels, he finds a naked woman in his bed…. She is workaholic-Josie, his sister’s business partner, forced to take a break in a French farmhouse, to recover from a bad burn-out. She wasn't anticipating company either. Connor, with his six foot four inches of pure muscle and a sexy smile tells her to leave, but she stands her ground, because she’s not used to give up on anything without a fight (except maybe her own happiness). They start talking, then understanding each other, then wanting to spend time together around French Riviera then… sharing a bed, knowing that some hot sex is good to burn tension and bed thoughts. As long as no feelings are involved (Yeah, sure! 😏😉). So initially it was all lust because they were avoiding the elephant in the room (their emotional and trust issues). But then they fall for each other, and hard. And while they are falling, they learn to know themselves better and what makes them happy for real.

It was a really sweet story and I liked it a lot. What I loved the most was the way Josie and Connor’s fears are told: they are afraid to not be enough for someone they really love, and don’t want to be hurt again. Both of them had felt not important enough for their family in the past, and had chosen a life away from feelings and love (and the chance to be hurt). They seem real and relatable and you end up engaged in their lives.
Maybe the pacing was a bit slow and I would have liked to read more about the development of their chemistry and how all that became love. But it’s a solid 3 ⭐ for this sweet book.
I want to thank the author Christy McKellen and NetGalley because they allowed me to read this in advance in exchange for an honest review.

The perfect quick read to start the month!

My first proper spicy romance, and it was so good! Loved the strangers to lovers trope, and the intricacies that Connor and Jodie brought to their story, and the development they go through being each other’s exclusive company.

Hot, funny, sweet, and all tied up with a nice bow. This was a great read.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this arc copy of So That Happened.

This was a fun read. I would maybe reach as far as to consider this is a grumpy/grumpy romance. I loved the setting in the vacation house and how Connor took care of Josie.

By the way, Josie’s family is a crappy family and I loved the moment with Connor, Josie, and Maddie at the end.

Thanks again to NetGalley and Boldwood Books! All opinions in this review are my own.

This is an uptight heroine who meets a free spirit hero story. They hate each other at first, then loosen up and start liking each other. A lot. Then they have a fight. Part of it is that she works with and likes his sister, and he's cut the sister out of his life, claiming sis cut him off first. Heroine goes home and mopes. Hero wanders off to his job digging water wells in India and sulks. Then he has an epiphany and goes to find the heroine at the perfect telling moment.

If you’re a fan of the strangers-to-lovers trope, a sucker for forced proximity, and live for those deliciously tense “only one bed” moments, then So That Happened will hit every one of your romance sweet spots.

Christy McKellen delivers a fast-paced, emotionally charged, and scorchingly addictive read that combines laugh-out-loud banter with real emotional stakes. The setup is irresistible: Josie Marchpane, a workaholic marketing powerhouse, is forced to take a break in a luxurious French farmhouse. She’s ready to recharge, maybe even get her life back on track. What she’s not ready for? Connor Preston—a hot, exhausted entrepreneur who’s just returned from a grueling business trip only to find Josie naked in his bed.

From the very first chapter, the tension crackles. Neither of them is backing down, and neither is about to leave the house. So they stay. Together. In close quarters. And things get complicated in the best kind of way.

What makes this book stand out isn’t just the sexy setup or the witty sparring (though both are top-notch). It’s the emotional core beneath all the heat. Josie is fiercely driven but quietly unraveling; her struggles with self-worth and validation—especially in relation to her parents—are painfully relatable. Connor, meanwhile, is more than just the brooding alpha type. He’s layered, vulnerable, and dealing with panic attacks that complicate his instinct to control everything around him. Watching these two break down their walls—and fight each other and for each other—makes for a rewarding emotional ride.

McKellen writes with sharpness and heart. Her dialogue feels authentic and modern, with just the right balance of humor and intensity. The chemistry between Josie and Connor isn’t just physical (though it’s very much that); it’s emotional. They challenge each other, push each other, and ultimately help each other grow.

And can we talk about the setting? The South of France isn’t just a backdrop here—it’s a mood. The lavender fields, the heat, the food, the wine—it all adds to the romance and the escapism. If you can’t hop on a plane right now, reading this book is the next best thing.

One of my favorite elements is how grounded the story feels even as it’s full of those big rom-com moments. The sex scenes are honest, steamy, and refreshingly real. There’s humor, but also heartache. Playful conflict, but also meaningful resolution.

Bonus: I’m really hoping McKellen writes a book for Connor’s sister Abi. She was only in a few scenes, but she had personality, backstory hints, and enough spark to carry her own story.

Final thoughts:
So That Happened is smart, sexy, funny, and emotionally rich. It’s for readers who like heat with heart, steam with substance. Think Tessa Bailey meets Christina Lauren, with a touch of Hannah Grace’s emotional depth. Whether you’re looking for your next beach read or just need a good book to get lost in, this one’s a winner.

So That Happened is a romance by Christy McKellen. I enjoyed some elements of this story, but overall found little that worked well in Josie and Connor’s relationship other than their physical chemistry.

There were many patriarchal elements to the relationship between Josie and Connor. I was disappointed with a MMC who criticized the FMC for being ambitious and dedicated to her career and got angry with her when she asked him personal questions about her past or anything about having a relationship. Their relationship developed to be more friendly during a steamy holiday together with lots of sex, but overall these characters didn’t seem to get along very well. I didn’t enjoy a love story in which the FMC feels the need to stay quiet and not question the MMC’s behavior in order for them to get along better. It was a stretch to me that after all of Connor’s negative behavior towards Josie, and his lack of any prior close relationships, that he would suddenly decide to change his entire life to be with her. The grand gesture at the end did not fit in with any of his earlier behavior in this book.

The chemistry the characters shared and their physical relationship was well-written and intense. Their physical connection was much stronger than any emotional intimacy they shared. To a younger reader, they may have enjoyed the relationship more. I loved the beautiful setting of Aix-en-Provence and the south of France in the summer. The author’s description made the lavender field crystal clear in my mind. Her description of the farmhouse made it come alive and be the perfect setting for a sexy holiday.

I wish that I had enjoyed this book more, but it was not a good fit for me. In my experience, a man with so much anger and resentment towards women in general could never be the caring and supportive partner that Josie wanted. Thank you to Christy McKellen, Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for an advance reader’s copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A quick, easy read perfect for holiday reading.

This was an ARC read courtesy of Boldwood Publishing.

This is a short (137 page) read and a fast-paced, forced proximity, holiday romance between characters Josie and Connor.
Josie is on a holiday at her business partners holiday let in France. The property is also co-owned by her business partners brother who happens to come home early from travelling.
Their forced proximity inevitably leads to getting together but with the hope of keeping emotions at bay.
Spoiler alert! They both catch feelings.

It was a really sweet story and the spice was good and the chemistry between them during the spice scenes was great. I really connected to Josie's feelings of having to achieve something in life to make her feel worthy and I completely understand that feeling too. They never say I love you, but Connor cares for her and likes her just as she is; flaws and all, and I loved that a lot.

However, I did want more. I wanted more depth from the characters and build up between them. Connor’s anxiety definitely could have been delved into more as he has a panic attack, which I relate to, but I didn’t feel his feelings or experience were explored enough.
Overall, I enjoyed it and it was a good palette cleanse read.

In this funny and spicy new romance novel from Christy McKellan, readers will go on a trope-filled vacation romance novel alongside Connor Preston and Josie Marchpane. Both in desperate need of a vacation, they end up in the holiday home in the South of France that Connor and Josie’s friend co-own. Josie won’t leave when Connor arrives and kicks her out, but Connor wants time to himself, so the two of them must brave a too-small house and only one bed if they want the vacation they definitely need -- and who knows, maybe they’ll get something more out of it. Entertaining, spicy, and tropey, readers will love the mix of tropes and the excellent location in this fun new summer romance novel that McKellan has brought to life. The characters are really funny, detailed, and well-written (as McKellan’s characters always are), and readers will love the changing dynamics between Connor and Josie as the novel progresses because they start the novel so far apart from each other. Entertaining, enjoyable, and perfect for summer, romance readers and fans of McKellan’s other books will absolutely love following along with Connor and Josie’s surprising (and surprisingly romantic) holiday in the South of France.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

We meet Josie, a bit of a control freak and workaholic, who is urged by her work partner to take some time off. She’s offered a holiday home in the south of France for a much-needed break. However, her plans for rest and relaxation are quickly disrupted when Connor — recently back from a work trip — finds Josie naked in his bed.

Both being stubborn and headstrong, neither is willing to vacate the house, so they strike an uneasy truce and agree to share the space for a few days. Of course, there’s only one bed. Their initial clashes are full of humor, particularly Josie's feisty attempts to stand her ground.

As the story unfolds, deeper family dynamics come into play: Connor turns out to be Josie’s business partner’s estranged brother, and Josie struggles with living in the shadow of her famous TV celebrity sister, constantly striving to win her parents' approval.

While this was a quick, fun, and entertaining read, I found the story a little too predictable, and I wished for more emotional depth and stronger chemistry between the characters.

3.5⭐/5⭐

Forced into a vacation at a gorgeous French farmhouse by your business partner… only for it to be interrupted by a handsome stranger, your partner’s brother, who wasn’t expecting anyone to be there. Sounds dreamy, right?

For me, this one landed somewhere in the okay but enjoyable category. Maybe it’s because I’ve been binging romances lately, or maybe because I had high expectations for the tropes, but it didn’t quite deliver that “wow” factor. Still, I did like the story.

The characters were decent, but I wished they had more depth. The main issue was the length... Too much happening for so few pages. A little more time to dive into the characters and let the romance breathe would’ve made a world of difference.

That said, the pacing was smooth, the banter was fun, and the romance was cute. The instant attraction felt a bit rushed at first, but their chemistry eventually worked.

If you’re in the mood for a quick, low-drama romance that’s light and refreshing, So That Happened could be just the pick!

This meet-cute little romance between two strangers who meet in a holiday home truly made my day. When Josie wants to escape and heads off for a holiday in France, she discovers that the holiday home lent to her by a friend is also going to be occupied by her friend’s handsome brother, Connor. This short novel about the unexpected chemistry between Josie and Connor is truly heartwarming.

I loved how the author described the French countryside while making the story more engaging. The characters are well developed to highlight both the romance and the holiday escapism. While keeping the tone light-hearted with swoon-worthy moments between the main couple, the author also touches on deeper themes like letting go of control and healing from emotional wounds.

This book is perfect for readers who enjoy quick, feel-good romances with scenic backdrops, emotional depth, and a dose of playful tension.

So That Happened by Christy McKellen is a light, tropey romance perfect for fans of forced proximity and enemies-to-lovers setups. Set in a dreamy French farmhouse, it’s an easy, feel-good read with some fun banter and situational chaos.

Josie and Connor are both strong-willed and thrown together in a way that promises tension and sparks. While the premise is fun, I found the writing a bit on the childish side at times, and it was hard to fully believe the chemistry between the leads. The spicy scenes are there, but they could’ve used more emotional depth and heat to really land.

Still, if you’re in the mood for a breezy rom-com-style story with a beautiful setting and classic romance beats, this is a solid pick. It won’t break new ground, but it’s a pleasant escape.

I enjoyed the sexy, sassy romance in this novel! It didn’t shy away from the messy realities of love, making Josie and Connor’s journey feel raw and relatable. Their struggles weren’t just obstacles—they were the very things that made their connection so compelling.
As they spend time together, they begin to tear down the emotional barriers they’ve built, challenging old habits and learning to let each other in. Their relationship forces them to slow down, embrace the present, and reconnect with the parts of themselves they had long neglected. It’s more than just romance—it’s about rediscovering happiness and figuring out what truly matters.

This scorching, tension-filled romp through the South of France is the perfect vacation read. When grumpy, brooding entrepreneur Connor returns to his holiday home, the last thing he expects is a gorgeous, naked stranger in his bed. Enter Josie, a fierce, driven workaholic who isn’t about to back down—or move out.

The chemistry between Josie and Connor is undeniable, and the "only one bed" trope delivers exactly what fans of steamy, slow-burn romances crave. Witty banter, high-stakes stubbornness, and just the right amount of emotional depth make this a fast, addictive read. It’s a battle of wills—and hearts—that’ll leave you swooning.

A delicious enemies-to-lovers escape with just enough spice to keep you turning pages late into the night.

This was such a cute book to read. It was a fun beach read with a good storyline and great characters.

Josie has been forced by her business partner to take a break, she offers her the family cottage for a few weeks to get her head on straight. Josie is really enjoying the place until Connor walks in, planning to stay in the cottage that is half his. Josie and Connor come to an agreement, and of course, romance starts to blossom as the characters butt heads and have the inevitable misunderstandings. It was a fun book with a good amount of spice.

Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and the author for granting my request to read this e-ARC and provide my honest opinions.

Insta-love is not one of my favorite tropes, and Connor and Josie were just ummm... Lacking in the chemistry department.

Both our MCs had all this pent-up energy, with Josie being on a forced break from work and Connor returning from one of his trips. Being in close proximity with each other didn't help at all, because they had to burn a little energy, if you get what I mean 😉.

Initially it was all lust because they were skirting around very important issues that needed to be talked about. Also, a lot of things didn't tie well with the story; for example, the break-in at the house.

Overall, it was an okay read, but the romance felt underdeveloped, with little chemistry or character growth.

Thank you once again for the e-ARC.

a hot, addictive book following high-strung Josie learning to embrace the magic of fun. helping her with what - and maybe who - to do is Connor. set in the idyllic french countryside, Connor and Josie are on a sparking collision course. when things come to a head what will happen when an immovable object meets and unstoppable force? this had me hooked from the beginning with the only one bed, opposites attract, and the realisation that casual may not cut it with these two. there is a 3rd act conflict, which while being slightly frustrating, does suit the characters and their personalities. complete with a satisying HEA, this is the perfect summer read!

The start of this sets up a cute romcom, but quickly I realised it’s a little too fast moving for me. I’ve struggled with getting invested, the main reason being the characters narrative, but also because there is little lead up to what happens. It’s a little too simplistic, the characters don’t feel realistic and maybe it gets better but I’m sadly just not having a good enough time with it to persevere. After reading about a quarter of this I’ve decided that I’m not invested enough to want to know what happens next.

The author creates a believable attraction between Josie and Connor from their first meeting. Both have potent personalities, but equally, both have issues in their past that make them wary of commitment. It's a passionate and poignant romance, not the no-strings affair that both believe it to be. The setting in the South of France adds to the romance, and their deepening emotional connection mirrors their self-realisation. It's a heartwarming, humorous and romantic tale.

So That Happened by Christy McKellen is a light, cute romance perfect for a weekend escape. Josie, a workaholic on a mandatory break, finds herself sharing a house with Connor—the charming owner with a knack for pushing her buttons. As expected, sparks fly.

The premise is fun and the chemistry between the characters is sweet, though the plot leans on the predictable side. Still, it delivers on the cozy, feel-good vibes you'd expect from a romantic getaway read.
