This book is a fun list of success criteria for being a superhero, compiled by Lava Boy and his sidekick, Captain Magma. Young readers will have a fun watching Lava Boy use his awesome imagination during a busy day of playing, snacking, napping, and helping a neighbor in the garden. Fun paintings illustrate this great list of rules.

An amusing and fun illustrated book for the little superhero in your life!

Captain Magma and his sweet sidekick, Lava Boy, show you some pretty important things on how to be a superhero. Following these rules will help you succeed in being the best superhero that you can be - and having a trusty sidekick is a super-bonus!

A few important rules to follow:
Rule #2 - Even though saving the say can be a messy job, somebody has to clean it up! (Meaning, even though you had a fun time learning, playing, etc. in the end, you must be responsible and clean up after yourself.)
Rule #3 - A superhero is always brave... but it's okay not to be. Sometimes even the strongest are afraid of something. And that's okay, as long as we try to overcome it. And even if we don't. Trying to understand why we are and coping can be good enough too.

This interactive book will have your little superhero ready to go and eager to count and read along. The colorful illustrations will not only engage them to play along with Captain Magma and Lava Boy, but will also help them see the moral to each rule and remember the true meaning of being a good superhero.

The ultimate book for the inventive child in your life!

My Review: This is a silly book for young super heroes in training. There is a lot of imagination in this book and the rules of being a super hero will help guide those super adventures. I figured this would be fun book to read with Munchkin's love of Superman but he didn't get as into it as I expected. We did have some giggles but he hasn't really asked to read it again.

My 7 year old daughter loved this book. I heard her laughing so hard upstairs and went to check on her. She was reading this book.

The ten basic rules of being a successful hero.

"Mothers don't understand that heroes can be messy." That was her favorite part. Heroes have the smallest weaknesses as well: like bees. Ha ha ha!!

She asked me to give this book 5 stars! I happily obliged because I got a chuckle out of the book as well.

Giggle, giggle, giggle! Rule number 10: Every superhero needs a sidekick. This is a great tutorial for our young superhero wanna-be's! I can see both sides to this story, and glad this kid gets to run, play, and imagine.

Great superhero book for young kids!

Yeah! A "hero" book that is matched to the target age group. Adults will catch the humor and the subtle life lessons while little ones enjoy the first person narration of Lava Boy's day along with his toy sidekick Captain Magma.

Every little child knows there are rules to being a superhero. Follow one little superhero, called Lava Boy, as he shows what all ten of these rules are. His little sidekick, Captain Magma, is with him on every page.

Young readers will learn about the rule of helping others, super powers, and other rules. Fun and colorful illustrations fill each page as the superhero learns how each of these rules fit into his everyday life. Parents will love some of the lessons learned from the rules, such as picking up after yourself or being considerate of other people. The author was also able to slip in several examples of good manners. Since each of the rules are numbered the book would be a fun way for preschoolers to learn their numbers. Children will love the whimsical drawings and little captions included with the rules. The print is large and the vocabulary will work well for the young reader.

I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.

There are rules to being a superhero like always respond to a call for help, use your powers in a good way, of course superheroes need snacks, and every superhero needs a sidekick (because it's more fun when you are saving the day with someone else).

This is a great book that shows kids how they can have fun and really use their imagination. This is a very simple book but really does a good job illustrating the different ways of helping people and spending the day doing "hero" things. This would be a great book for toddlers and preschoolers especially if they want to pretend/be a superhero.

Absolutely loved this simple book about the ten rules superheroes should follow including Rule Number 5: "Superheroes make a lot of noise (Pow! Grrr! Wham!)." The story teaches superhero manners and following good rules.

The illustrations are colorful, wonderful and fun. They are clean and easy to follow. There is plenty of humor throughout the story to keep readers interested and having fun. This story is recommend for ages 4-7 which I think is perfect.

Give this to your favorite superhero or better yet, read it alongside of him and enjoy this wonderful story together.

This picture book provides ten rules that will help superheroes be at their very best. Readers will smile at some of the tips, especially the last one with its reminder of the importance of a good sidekick. The gouache illustrations are colorful and almost resemble those found in comic books. Would-be superheroes will find plenty of good advice here, and they're certain to enjoy reading the story.

My students LOVE superhero books so I always keep my eyes out for new ones to add to my collection. This is a reasonable choice -- kids will like the 10-rules-format and child's imagination. I like Mini Grey's Traction Man Is Here! better but this is a bit simpler and will appeal to younger readers. I did think that the perspective/sizing was a bit confusing at times.

Rule #10, Every superhero needs a sidekick. In this handy guide, Superhero Captain Magma and his trusty sidekick Lava Boy detail all of the rules that govern the life of a good superhero. The pictures are just adorable as Captain Magma and Lava Boy go on several adventures together, saving the world, or the play room, from evil of all kinds.

Cute book. Fun to share one-on-one. The numbered list, interjected with speech bubbles, makes this a hard book to share with a large group. But the implied side-stories in the illustrations encourage the child you're reading to to tell the rest of the story in their own words, creating great opportunities for discussion.

This book is best for young superhero fans, especially ones who have a favorite superhero toy. The illustrations are colorful and active.

One child said this is a good book (3 stars) and the other said it is just okay (2 stars). Neither requested re-reads, but a superhero fan might enjoy it more.

Every kid needs a superhero sidekick who can help them navigate through life. Or at least to help him eat all of his cookies. I enjoyed this book for little action heroes, and there might even be a little lesson or two kind of snuck in there. But really, it's just a fun tale of life through a kid's eyes.

This book was cute, and I like that it supports imaginative play as the book is about a boy pretending to be a his superhero doll's sidekick, but it wasn't my favorite for a preschool storytime. I wasn't a fan of the illustrations, and the narrative and humor were a little too mature for preschoolers. Maybe it would work well in a kindergarten storytime.

Pros: Captain Magma's 3 superpowers - strength, lava vision, friendly personality; villian's worst vice is wanting to keep all cookies for himeself

Cons: a little hard to understand (not just for little ones) that Captain Magma is a doll until the last page

There is no narrative in this book, the rules aren't especially clever and don't leave you feeling warm or squishy inside, the illustrations don't do much for you or your kids, and the word 'rule' has to do some bizarre stretching to cover all of the 'rules' of the title.

Really colorful and fun, great to read. The story, pictures, and onomatopoeias lend themselves quite well to reading aloud for kids or a classroom.

Would definitely recommend for kids who like superheroes!

This book reminded me a lot of Toy Story. The boy and his toy are super heroes, but the boy is the sidekick while the hero is the toy. It was cute and my son enjoyed it.

Honestly, I didn't think much of this book. It's cute, it's short, and it's simple. The art is ok. However, my 4 year old who really doesn't like sitting down for story time LOVES this book. It's a repeat request from him. He's taken it camping. I've read it 5 times in a row. My son laughs everytime the bird makes Captain Magma fly and he says he's my Lava Boy. This book probably won't be a favorite for long and it didn't resonate with my other kids, but it earned 5 stars for the joy it brought to my son.
