Presenting a special adaptation of George Romero's long-awaited zombie movie set years in the future after the end of his Dead trilogy. In Land of the Dead, the walking dead roam an uninhabited wasteland and the living try to lead "normal" lives behind the walls of a fortified city. A new society has been built by a handful of enterprising, ruthless opportunists, who live in the towers of a skyscraper, high above the hard-scrabble existence on the streets below. But outside the city walls, an army of the dead is evolving. Inside, anarchy is on the rise. With the very survival of the city at stake, a group of hardened mercenaries is called into action to protect the living from an army of the dead.
Maybe it's because I saw the movie first, but this was a wholly unsatisfying read. I got it for the art by Gabriel Rodriguez which, unlike his other work, was only serviceable. Some of the whitewashing, particularly John Leguizamo's character, Cholo, was distracting.
The last of the core George A. Romero zombie stories that dealt with commercialism, capitalism, and the moral decay of the human race in light of the zombie apocalypse. I am going on the graphic novels directly and not counting the lack of "Diary of the Dead" and "Survival of the Dead", neither of which had a GN adaptation (Survival sucked anyway ;))
In LotD, we meet Riley, the captain of the "Dead Reckoning", a special armored transport that is used to carry out missions for the City Council of what remains of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and his crew of miscreants as he does one last foray outside the walls of the city for supplies. As we follow Riley around, we also see what his 2nd in Command "Cholo" (really GA? Naming the one Latin character in your story Cholo?) as he completes what he thinks is the last secret mission for Mr. Kaufman, the presumed head of the city council and owner of Fiddler's Green, the upper crust location in the otherwise decimated landscape.
We see Cholo betrayed, Riley betrayed, Slack betrayed, and pretty much anyone who is not Kaufman, shot in the back over power and greed. If you have not seen the movie, go for that. If you don't like horror movies but love comics, this is a more PG version of it with gore that can be ignored in favor of the actual story.
a pretty good interpretation of Romero's movie where he introduced us to the idea of a hive minded zombie, one that travels in a large herd and seemingly communicates with one another.
the city has been modified, fortified, and made safe for the inhabitants still living under the thumb of Mr Kaufman. everything that happens in the city is under the control of him.
the story presented in the book sounds better on paper than it did on screen, it might have been the actors but it wasn't an entertaining film, while this adaptation was very captivating.
I figured since I am a zombie nut, i would give this comic a go. Honestly? I really enjoyed it! (but I also enjoyed the movie). I thght the art work was great, and the storyline was different then most zombie books/movies out there.
