Always Been Mine

Rate this book
*Book contains adult themes, graphic sexual scenes and language. Not intended for readers under 18 or those that want a sweet romance.*
This is the first book in the Bastards MC series.
Josephine Walker doesn’t do drama. All her life she has taken the safe route and done what was expected; she married her college sweetheart, found a great job, had two beautiful children and settled in to her little piece of perfection to live out her life. She was happy with the mundane.

The only thing that seems out of place is her best friend Matt; he is as funny, crazy and impulsive as she is sarcastic, dependable and predictable. Matt’s life is loud and full of chaos. Jo knows his past is as dark as his tattoos, that his secrets are buried for a reason, but all she can see is that he’s always got her back.

When her marriage falls apart, Matt swoops in to help Jo pick up the pieces. At least, that’s what he planned to do. But, Jo has other plans. She’s done playing it safe, done caring what other people think. She wants wild and crazy; and as much as she tries to ignore it, she wants Matt. Together they have to answer the ultimate question; can a man and a woman, who are as close as they are, ever truly be just friends?
Jo adores Matt, she trusts him completely. But, will she risk everything, including their friendship, to take a chance on love with the bad boy that could destroy her heart?

3 Frustrating and bang my head against the wall Stars

First of all, I need to give a little disclaimer before I rant a little.
Carina Adams is by far the most adorable lady I've ever talked books with. I got so mad at one point reading this book that I wanted to DNF and I actually stopped reading it. I explained my reasons had absolutely nothing to do with her writing. She writes beautifully, she fills the pages with characters that bring out so many emotions. The words and descriptions she uses paints a portrait and I loved her style.

My problem was the characters. I loved Mattie ..oh wow did I love this guy. Tall, tatted and a biker on the side. Yea he was amazing. But his character for 90% of this book was beyond perfect to me. He put up with stuff he shouldn't have and he was just the "step up and stick with it" type of guy. Loyal, sweet and sexy. But most of all a beautiful soul.

Jo (Josephine) was a very fickle character. Very wish washey and it irritated me greatly. I wanted to slap her and then slap her again. She did some stupid stuff and some hurtful stuff and some unbelievable things.

I didn't think Matty deserved to be treated like that. Then I kept reading after wanting to quit and I felt that Jo grew a little bit more and I thought things were looking up to only be faced with an abrupt about face with Mattie's character. I was floored to say the least. I honestly can say that this author has an amazing talent to have made me feel as strongly as I did towards these characters. I'd take this irritation and frustration any day over feeling nothing at all.

Thanks Carina so much for offering this story for review. I still hold out hope the my Mattie from the beginning will reappear and take charge like I know he can and get his HEA.

4.5 star review by Jen Skewes

Always Been Mine is Carina Adams' debut novel and she did a fantastic job with it. It was one of those books that I could not put down and thought about for days after. I even found myself re-reading some of my favorite parts, which included Matty of course. I absolutely loved that man but I'll get to him in a second.

Josephine and Matty have been best friends for the past ten years or so. He is the best friend that any woman can ask or hope for. When Joe finds her marriage completely falling apart Matty is there to help pick up the pieces. Joe's relationship with her husband has never really been perfect. All though in the very beginning most people would have thought it was. They never fought and seemed so in love. But at some point their marriage began to crumble. And right now Josephine is living in a hotel room away from her husband wondering where to go from here. She is trying to deal with her husband's infidelity and the feelings that she still has for him and how to move on from it all. Then there is Matty, her best friend, her confidant, the man who is always there for her. And as always Matty is right there to help her with her current crisis.

Matty and Joe have such an amazing bond and friendship but to some people they may be a little too close for comfort. To an outsider looking in you would think that they were the ones that were in love and married. Matty has a girlfriend who Joes is not a fan of and vice versa. But when things start to become a little complicated with his relationship, Matty and Joe find themselves closer to crossing that line of friendship. Joe wants it, but Matty is afraid of what they will lose if they cross it. Is there friendship worth risking it all for love?

I absolutely loved Matty. He is hot and sexy, caring, sweet and very protective of Joe. I think you can sense early on how much he loves her but was never able to have her. So her friendship was the next best thing and something that he treasured. In my opinion his actions alone, especially in one specific situation, spoke volumes about how much he loved her. He has a past and secrets that he is keeping but it doesn't make you love him any less. I loved Joe and at times I felt so bad for her. For the treatment she received from her husband as well as from one other character who shall remain nameless, only because I don't want to spoil anything for you. I adored her and Matty together and wanted nothing more than for these two to end up together an happy.

Matty and Joes finally have a chance to be together but not everything in life is that simple. There are many obstacles in their way. They both have exes that are not happy with their relationship, then there are secrets and insecurities that also come into play. Always Been Mine has it all; drama, angst, heartbreaking moments, an ex bitch that I wanted to slap on more than one occasion, and that moment when I had knots in my stomach and I found myself shaking my head, yelling at my Ipad, "No, No, please don't go there." This was a fantastic read and I cannot wait for the next one. The ending was perfect and I felt true to the story. This is not a cliffhanger but there are some questions left unanswered and the door has been left open for more of Matty and Joe, which I am very excited about.

For 2 people that allegedly can tell each other everything as friends, they have a real problem talking to each other. Jo was a bit annoying and Matty too. But the other characters were intriguing enough to make me carry on and read both books.

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick

Always Been Mine is the debut novel from Carina Adams. I was really blown away with her writing style and her ability to evoke such emotions from the reader. I think that this story is one that you will definitely have strong feelings about, and I will warn you that there are some difficult topics dealt with in this story including cheating. I really liked Carina's writing style though, and I felt like she did a pretty great job of writing characters that have so many different facets to them that you are constantly learning new things about them as they grow and evolve over the course of this book. I can't wait to read more from her after having read this book.

On the surface, Josephine Walker appears to have it all. She has a great career, she is married to her college sweetheart and has two beautiful children. She also has her coworker and best friend Matt. When Jo's life begins to fall apart and her marriage fails, she turns to Matt for comfort. There has always been an attraction between them, but for the first time she starts to really see him as more than just a friend. Matt has been in love with Jo for awhile, but has resigned himself to having only friendship with Jo rather than nothing. With her marriage in jeopardy, Jo finally begins to see that she wants more than just stable and boring. She wants wild and she wants Matt. But things between them won't be easy after everything in their pasts as well as the secrets that Matt has kept from Jo. Can Jo and Matt take their friendship to the next level, or will they destroy everything including the friendship that they both can't live without?

I really loved Matt. He was so great all the way through this story until the very end when he made me a little mad. But he was Jo's rock and I adored him. He was sweet and kind, funny and caring. He truly loved Jo and would have done anything for her. I loved that he was a professional during the day and had a great job, but that he was also really sexy with tattoos and lived the biker lifestyle at night. He was complicated and had a lot of secrets, and I really enjoyed seeing his layers be peeled back a little at a time. I will admit that while I loved Matt, I struggled with Jo for most of this book. She had a tendency to be wishy washy, and I hated her mood swings. I had a problem with a lot of her actions, and I just didn't like or understand most of what she did. Just as she finally started to really get her act together, I felt like the story was almost over. I will say that the chemistry between Matt and Jo was amazing. They had the physical attraction, but they also had such a strong bond and base from their friendship. I thought that these two were absolutely made for each other, and I never stopped rooting for them to figure things out.

Overall, I thought that this was a really great story. It was different and wasn't something that I had read before. I liked that this story pushed boundaries and really showed a journey. Matt and Jo grew and evolved over the course of this book and had a lot of really hard things that they had to confront and deal with. This book will definitely run you through the emotional wringer, but I loved that Carina was able to really evoke such strong feelings. I am really looking forward to seeing what else she writes in the future and I can't wait to read the next chapter in Jo and Matt's lives. I would recommend this story if you are looking for something different and something that will draw you in and keep your interest. I couldn't wait to see how things would play out and couldn't put this book down.

-I tried to keep this review as spoiler free as possible, but just be warned, there are some things in here that may give some parts of the book, including the ending, away.

I went in to this book with a warning that there had been some bad reviews and some people were upset, so I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting into. I normally don't rely on other people's reviews of books to choose what I'm going to read. In this case, I'm super glad I don't listen well lol. I absolutely LOVE this book. I'm an avid reader and there are a lot of repetative books out there, so I'm always on the hunt for something different. This book has it all. It is extremely different from most books I've read, and I've been an avid reader since I was 7, so that says a lot. There is mystery, drama, suspense, romance and so much more. When I first started reading it, I was kind of upset with Joey, but that didn't last long. You know what they say, If you don't know the whole story, then shut up! lol (inserts foot in mouth). She is an amazing character! In the beginning I was yelling at her to grow a backbone, but boy did she surprise me the closer it got to the end. She's driven and exciting! And Matty!!! ohhhhh Matty, he can be my hot best friend any day!!!! He's everything a woman looks for in a man, sexy, sweet, ambitious, and soooo much more. Their scenes together had me fanning myself. It was very tasteful though, just enough detail. And the Bastards, I love every last one of them. Kinda felt like family, and I hope to see more of them in the future. I just have to know if Elle makes it and who did it! On the other hand, I wanted to strangle both Taylor and Will!!!!! Especially Taylor! Who does that?!!! I mean, I know there are many women out there like her, but wow, going through her man's stuff and just slipping it on and playing pretend just to piss Jo off!!!! Errrrrrr!!!! And I genuinely believe Will loved her, but things got out of hand. You know what they say, first time is your fault, any time after that is mine because I allowed it to happen and didn't do anything about it. Well, Jo did something about it this time and he just didn't know what to do. I almost cried at the end when Matt told Jo she couldn't stay :( but somehow I knew things would work out for the best. I'm not all that crazy about the very end. I was kind of hoping a Brady bunch kind of thing would happen and her fam and his fam would mesh together as one. But you know what, every book doesn't need a happily ever after. If they did, they would be predictable and boring. Not that things didn't work out, it just wasn't what I was expecting. Anyhoo, I absolutely couldn't put this book down. I picked it up at 7 this morning and literally didn't put it down until I was finished. I found myself wanting so much more! I hope to see more of Jo and Matt in the future! Carina Adams is an awesome writer and I can't wait to get my hands on Honey Whiskey!!!

I shy away away from books with a love triangle like the plague. Why? Because I get enough of that mess in the real world I don't generally like to deal with it in my book universe. That being said, I'm glad I ignored myself and read this book. I absolutely loved it. I would have been mad at the ending if I didn't know there was a second book. I can't wait for more mat and jo!

Jo.

Jo thought she had it all. A marriage to a man she had been with since she was 17. Two beautiful kids. A job she worked hard at. And a best friend who meant the world to her. But sometimes if it looks to be too good than it probably is. We start the book at a fork in the road for Jo. With her kids gone for the summer she is left to try to make sense of a marriage that had been slowly failing for a while. When her husband confesses to cheating and says he is in love with the other woman it leave Jo on her own for the first time in a long while. It also give Jo a new look at her best friend and to things in their relationship that they can no longer ignore.

Matty.

Oh mattey. I can love a book where I disagree with the female but I can't love a book if I don't love the male. But boy oh boy did I love mattey. His past is a bit of a mystery but I'm hoping that changes in the next book. What we do know is he is a kick ass social worker who rocks a motorcycle and rolls with a tough club of hot bad ass mo fos. I love love love bikers. Can't explain it but I just do. I do know there is something about a man who cares so damn deeply about the people around him that he is willing to throw down to keep them safe. Mattey fights his attraction to his best friend not willing to lose her if things go wrong. When these two finally get together hot can't even describe them. Seriously, the sex scenes didn't have a lot of talking and there wasn't even a huge amount of them but what they did do was make me need some along time with my kindle! Phew.

I hope in book to we get their hea. Because after all when you love two characters as much as I love these two you want them to get the ending they deserve. I also hope we get more Clarissa and Rocker. Please and thank you!!!!!

Oh! and before I forget! Taylor and Will.

It's rare that I fall in love with a book. BUT I fell hard! To say I love this story and characters would be an understatement. For a debut novel, Always Been Mine is top notch and won't leave you disappointed. Matty & Joes *happy sigh* are just perfect! Can't wait to read more...bring on the Bastards!

Always Been Mine and Honey Whiskey both get 4 stars from me.

Always Been Mine gives you a good look into the life of Joes and Matty. The second book however, Honey Whiskey, digs even deeper and has more action and information surrounding the Bastards.

I fell in love with them, the love they had for their family and friends as well as each other.

It's hard to review this book. I almost stopped reading it cos where was the mc in it? Not in this book. Then there was jo n matty, both of them so goddamn annoying! Yeah I so would have had a problem with their friendship too. If my hubby has a friend like her we'd be divorced simple. I found this book frustrating and at times just wanted to quit but I kept on cos I'd read the synopsis of book two n wanted to read that. No is frankly pathetic and behaves like a teenager. Didn't like her at all. Matty is the same! Annoying!!! Honestly I don't know why I kept with it. But as I e read book 2 I'm glad I did. If you can get past this book one it's worth the effort.

and yeah how was either of their relationships supposed to work when there was a third in there? i certainly wouldnt tolerate jo in my relationship friends or not, emotional cheating is still cheating. i don't know how her husband lasted so long cos i would have divorced her years ago. this whole charade of being friends and all that shit was just totally annoying tbh. i was frustrated and almost dnf

i liked the book as a whole just fine, but there were a few things that made me hate it a bit. the main thing that i really disliked was that scene between will and jo, where he was assaulting her and hurting her, and the ting runnign through her mind was that she maybe didnt want him to stop? what the actual. girl was trying to leave a horrible marraige with a man who was cheating on her, a marraige where neither were happy anymore, and when he tried stuff with her, she was immediatly like, yes? no thats not cool. especially sicne she was hooking up with/ in a realtionship with her best friend. she did obvisouly hate what happened later though, so i feel like it was just a short-lived issue. it was pretty fine overall, but it really didnt give the whoel motor cycle club vibe that i was expecting. give it a read if you want, dont if you dont.

2.5 rounded down

ok but i’m so tempted to read the second book because this ended way too abruptly - something that contributed to my overall rating.

there are just some things in books that i simply cannot stand. i hate miscommunication, and this book was rife with it. so many cliches i wanted to cry (she’s truly a testament of her time). and why did this book go from something so wholesome to like mafia gang grrr bad boy vibes. it was so random.

the drama made this super bingeable, which i will never fault. i was kinda living for the ex-husband, weird ex-girlfriend interjections, because even though they are both horrible, vile people, i think it grounded this story more back into what it initially felt like it was meant to be, rather than some like gang gang pew pew violence vibes.

someone talk me out of buying the next book please.

I really liked this book, it is so different to any MC book I have read before.

I really loved Josephine, she doesn't let anyone walk over her. She is strong even though she is hurt. She rebuilds her life after everything she has been through, and count on her friends.

I loved Matthew, even though he annoyed me at times, he was still there for his friends. He may seem like an ordinary person, but he has a side to him.

I cannot wait to read more.

"Plato said that we each have a soul mate—one person that we share a spirit with. That person can be a friend or a lover, but it is someone to whom we are bonded for eternity.”

Always Been Mine by Carina Adams

I first read this book a while ago so thought it was time for a reread. I like the characters of Matty and Jo. I did find the drama near the end unnecessarily. It caused me to get rather frustrated with both of them. It was a good read though.

Good story line and very interesting characters. My only issue with this book is the number of grammatical errors. They were not awful, just distracting. Overall, it's a unique story, that sucks you in with the hint of suspense and danger in the background of the love story between Jos and Matt.

Looking forward to the next book in the series.

What did I think??? This book is an amazing read! Always Been Mine, lead me to kind of think I knew where it would be going. The cover kept me intrigued such s ingenious design, so I committed to it and can't even barely finish a thought, yes it is just that good! Josephine, Jo or Joes she goes by all three married her college bf, he's cheated a few times they're into around 15 years of marriage and she's just catches him and realizes she's got some real life changes to resolve. She and Will share 2 children and they send the children away for the summer so they can start processing. First day into it she walks in on him and his secretary going at it in her house in their bed, so there goes the special "healing" oportunity. For 10 years shes worked as a social worker with Matty, her best friend in child services. Matty is Matteo and he's her best friend for 10 years they started out with annoyance and lots of irkability, then became the best of friends. Well Matty is who she goes to when all this has happened and he's been her shoulder for 10 years this time the relationship crosses the line past friendship - because, Jo asks! Carina Adams, debuts with a book that offers an exciting look at what, to me felt like maybe as if, I caught a glimpse of, what goes on behind closed doors. There is a lot of rough and well written sex in this book, whew! Will her hb is a douche, but the author allows us to feel the seriousness effects of a marriage breaking and offers time to look at it from different perspectives and angles. Matty is tender, soft, caring, a defender and protector, and true is the best meaning of the word. I may have a new best book boyfriend, he is just amazing! He's rich, she finds out, he belongs to an MC called, The Bastards, he has a past, he has secrets that she is yet to find out. Regardless he is Matty, he loves her, you can't change love....so. The ending will worry you because I really just wasn't sure how it was going to end, but it is a good ending. Read this book! You won't regret it. I know I won't, I'll be thinking about these guys for awhile.

The story revolves around Josephine (Jo or Joes for short) Walker and her best friend of 11 years, Matty. Joes and Matty have always had a deep bond of friendship and platonic love for each other much to the chagrin of Joes’ Husband, Will and Matty’s girlfriend, Taylor.

After staying in her marriage for the sake of her two children, Joes is faced with the tough decision of ending her loveless marriage to Will. When Will makes that decision easier for her, she finds herself turning to her caring best friend for the support that she needs. Joes and Matty find themselves fighting their feelings for each other in an effort to remain friends so as to not lose their friendship.

Matty with his Greek-like looks is tall, dark, gorgeous, muscly, tattooed and rides a motorcycle. What’s not to love? Joes sees herself as the typical mum and is severely lacking self-confidence thanks to her marriage.

I loved Joes’ character from the start and reading about her blossoming from a slightly withdrawn woman with no confidence to how she ends up, made me love her character even more. She is an amazingly relatable character.

Matty, what’s not to love? Seriously!

The story continuously kept me guessing as to what would happen and whether she would stay married with her Husband or whether she and Matty would start a relationship and risk their friendship and what would happen when Matty revealed some of his secrets that he had been keeping from her.

Always Been Mine is extremely well written and flows together perfectly. Not once did I feel as if there were any parts of the story that went unexplored. The “sexy scenes” were hot and steamy and definitely thigh-clenching worthy.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fantastic romance read with amazing characters, hot alpha males and a HEA.

I didn’t devour this book, it devoured me!

A 5 star read for me.
