I’m closing my daughter’s bedroom door after putting her to bed and saying I love her one last time, when I hear the baby monitor crackle to life. The voice sends shockwaves to my ‘Your mother doesn’t love you.’My husband says it’s just exhaustion and I’m hearing things. But he has no idea what that voice is doing to Olivia. He doesn’t see the look in my daughter’s eyes as she pushes me away and says, ‘I want my other mother.’Then Olivia plunges down the stairs screaming. In my worst nightmares, I never imagined I could come so close to losing my child. As I watch Olivia sleep in a hospital bed, her broken arm in a sling, I decide this has to stop. Someone unscrewed our baby gate from the wall. I know I’ve been unwell in the past, but I’m not making this up.The only people who’ve been inside our house are the ones I thought I could trust. Someone close is watching me, speaking to Olivia and trying to make me look like a bad parent. I don’t care what my husband says. I’m more scared than I’ve ever been in my life, but my precious child means everything to me. They have no idea how far I’ll go to protect my daughter…

This is a new to me author, that I will definitely be reading her backlist. Loved this book. Brilliant. I read alot of thrillers, so I was happy to see a new plot line.
I remember those news stories a couple years ago, showing people whose baby monitors and doorbell cameras were hacked into. Hearing disembodied voices talking to your children has to be terrifying - and it’s exactly what happens to the couple in this story.
Jeremy and Miriam have a toddler, Liv, and a newborn son named Samuel. With Liv, Miriam had postpartum psychosis, so her husband and friends are keeping a close eye on her for the symptoms. This includes installing a baby monitor, so Jeremy can see their kids and make sure his wife is okay when he’s on business trips. Everything is fine, until one night, Miriam hears the monitor telling her daughter that her mommy doesn’t love her.
Miriam is obviously hysterical, but her husband is concerned that she’s exhibiting symptoms of postpartum psychosis again. Jeremy soon sends her to a mental health facility, or as he calls it, a “retreat” for a “rest”. When Miriam gets back home, there are now cameras everywhere. Worried that her husband still thinks she’s losing her mind, Miriam asks her friend Zain to see why her home is now acting like a smart home. What he finds sends her spinning…
This story is engrossing because there are so many variables that soon, you start wondering if Miriam is crazy, if Jeremy is crazy, or if everyone is crazy. Why does the power keep going out? Why did the refrigerator turn off, ruining everything in it? What’s wrong with the heater? What is happening in this house? Is Miriam hallucinating, or is someone out to get her?
The ending of this was as great as the rest of the book. I thought I’d had the ending pegged since the first few chapters, but I wasn’t ready for the surprise twist! This one is definitely a page-turner and quite entertaining. Four stars.
(Thank you to Bookouture, Rosie Walker and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on February 1, 2024.)
Overall, this was a very gripping read. Some bits of this seemed to drag on or seem a bit over the top. It's small moments but the rest of it and the shocking twists truly made up for it. I loved how this played out and it truly kept me guessing the entire time. At some points I even felt like I was losing it, as I started believing the main character. Iol such a wild ride! Absolutely a worthy read!
I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.
the premise was so good and the plottwists were even better. BUT the main character made so many dumb choices. it was like she had zero common sense. it was aggravating.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I hear a voice speaking to my child...'Your mother doesn't love you'...
I thoroughly enjoyed Rosie Walker's first two thrillers "The Serial Killer's Secret" and "The House Fire", both of which were phenomenal! So I had high expectations for this one. It didn't disappoint, on the whole, but the ending lacked a little in execution. And left me with a few questions (something of a pet peeve of mine as I like things to be neatly tied up). Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic story and at times it was decidedly creepy. I still really enjoyed it for the most part.
An addictive thriller with a solid storyline, and coming off the backs of the author's first two, I was excited to dive into this domestic thriller extraordinaire. But her previous two were a lot darker than this one taking instead a domestic approach with creepy messages and a ton of gaslighting. The question is...who is behind it all?
Miriam and Jeremy's family is now complete with 5 year old Liv and now newborn baby Samuel to add to the fold. Ever since they discovered Miriam was pregnant, they have worked hard at preparing little Liv for the new addition reiterating that she will be a big sister to her new baby brother. But from the moment they come home, their perfectly curated plan (and lives) fall to pieces. Liv refuses to have anything to do with the baby insisting she didn't want him and asking when were his real mummy and daddy coming to get him. It broke Miriam's heart to see her daughter reject her little brother and the confusing emotions she must be feeling about his sudden appearance. She has been an only child for five years, has had her parents' sole attention for all of that time. Suddenly there is a new baby that will inevitably take their attention away from her...and she doesn't like it one bit.
But it's as Miriam closes the bedroom door to Liv's room on the way out that she hears a disembodied voice whisper to her daughter "She's lying. Your mother doesn't love you."
Miriam is furious. Who is talking to her daughter and filling her head with lies? A quick glance around the nursery and her eyes fall on the new WiFi baby monitor. Could that be the culprit? Is someone watching her every move and speaking to Liv that way? But when she tries to voice her concerns to Jeremy he doesn't believe her. He immediately thinks she is imagining things, it's an auditory hallucination brought on by Samuel's birth and a pre-cursor to post partum psychosis, which she suffered badly after Liv's birth.
So what does Jeremy do? He gathers her friends, her mum and himself and has her sent to a "retreat" but basically it is a private mental health facility, for two weeks. During that time Liv refuses to join in the daily video calls and visits. The one time she does visit she punches Miriam in the face then insists "Can we visit my other mummy now?" Miriam feels the sting of rejection not only from Liv but also Samuel who she has ached to breastfeed since admission to the facility but when she unbuttons her blouse Samuel rejects her too. Jeremy, in his stupid wisdom, gave him a bottle of formula before coming into the visiting room. Why would he do that? He knows Miriam wanted to breastfeed him. And he organised for a state of the art breast pump to be supplied so she could express every day and freeze her milk which would later be delivered to Jeremy to feed him with. And he feeds him formula? I could slap that guy from the very first moment for his stupid behaviour.
When Miriam is finally discharged, she returns home to find that she is under continued surveillance. Hidden cameras everywhere. Her house has suddenly become a smart home which she has no control over. The only consolation is that Jeremy had disposed of the baby monitor and now she has a cheaper non-WiFi model so that no one can hack in and whisper lies to her little girl. Miriam doesn't know who to trust or who to confide in? Who is watching her? And why? What do they want?
There is so much going on in this story, some of which you will have to suspend belief while others will leave you scratching your head. Both Jeremy and Miriam were clueless and failed to talk to each other. He automatically dismisses her claims as being part of a psychosis and rejects anything she has to say without actually listening to her. Miriam wasn't much better but at least she was better than Jeremy and Liv put together. That child was like the devil incarnate. She made my blood boil behaving like a spoilt princess. I'm the oldest in my family and I was excited about my baby brother's arrival. I certainly didn't behave like that.
And then there is the gaslighting. That is on a whole other level. It sometimes makes for uncomfortable reading because you sympathise with Miriam as no one is listening to her, which then leaves her questioning herself and her own sanity.
I knew who was behind it almost from the start. But then when the ending came it left things a little confusing. Who was actually to blame? We are given a couple of suspects at the end but it's not really clear which of them was actually the guilty party.
POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD
I really couldn't get my head around that and it's for this reason I had to knock off a star. Throughout the entire book it was five stars all the way...until I got to the end.
Misgivings aside, this was a taut tense and thrilling read. I devoured the entire book in one day. It is compelling addicive and wholly entertaining.
I would like to thank #RosieWalker, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheBabyMonitor in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookoutre for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I flew through this! It was a decent thriller with a solid storyline. The main couple’s behaviour was beyond frustrating, but I guess that was the point since the story hinged on us not knowing which one to trust, if any at all.
The twists packed enough of a punch to be enjoyable and I would definitely be interested in reading more works from Rosie Walker.
The Baby Monitor is a solid, creepy thriller with suspense, drama and shocking twists. Miriam and Jeremy have a small child and a newborn. With her first baby, Miriam suffered from postnatal depression. Jeremy wants to keep an eye on things so they install a baby monitor. Then Miriam begins to hear voices through it. Jeremy thinks it might be best if Miriam goes to a retreat for some rest in case of repeated history. But when Miriam returns, there’s much to be suspicious about and soon she wonders if she is going mad. I really enjoyed this one, many moments of eerie, lots of red herrings, a great cast and plentiful unexpected scenarios and curveballs. The writing is engaging and the narrative is hooking. One that you will read way into the night and past your bedtime. I’m eager to read more books from Rosie Walker.
I really loved the writing style of this author. All throughout the book, I thought I knew who the villain was, but what a twist at the end ! Even if I would have loved a bit more about the why and how.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This book was AMAZING and full of twists! I honestly could not put it down and almost read it all in one go ( I would of if I had the time!). Miriam has just given birth to her second child, Samuel, and her husband Jeremy is worried that she will experience the same thing she did after she had their first child Olivia - postpartum psychosis. Miriam had a history of thinking that her child would be better off without her which led to Jeremy being overly cautious and a bit controlling over her, always wondering if she is mentally stable enough to stay alone with their kids while he travels away for work. Miriam starts to get paranoid after she hears a strange voice over their new baby monitor telling Liv that her “mummy doesn’t love her”. Liv begins acting out against her mother and her baby brother which was frightening. Miriam is then sent to a “wellness retreat” which is more like a mental institution but once she returns home her paranoia only increases as she discovers multiple hidden cameras around the house and electronics/devices being controlled remotely. This is where it gets interesting as she tries to unravel who is behind this - throw in Jeremy not believing her and gaslighting her and making her question what is real and what’s not. Their relationship starts to crumble as their trust in each other dissipates and accusations are thrown about. The ending was so unexpected and there was so much going on but in a good suspenseful way!
Highly recommend this to everyone who enjoys psychological thrillers!
Thank you to netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of an ARC! ✨
This book was twisty and creepy and held my interest the whole time. It centers on Miriam, who has just had her 2nd child, and as soon as they get home from the hospital really scary things start to happen, starting with a voice Miriam doesn't recognize talking to her 5-year-old daughter though the baby monitor. Miriam had a very rough time after her first child was born and is a deliciously unreliable narrator throughout the book.
I did have to suspend my disbelief a bit because some of the things in the book seemed very unrealistic. As long as you can get past that, there are some definite creepy parts and some of the twists were really surprising. I could sympathize with Miriam, though sometimes she did things that drove me insane; the author did a good job at making it unclear how much of what was happening was in her head versus being real. I struggled a bit with the end of the book because I didn't feel like I had a clear understanding of why some of the characters made the decisions they made. It felt like the author was going for "shocking twist" without laying the breadcrumbs to make it make sense.
Overall, this was an engaging and fast-paced read with a definite creepy factor, but I wish that some parts had been a little more realistic and that the ending made better sense to me. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Edge of the seat thriller about a young mother who is adjusting to life with a newborn and a five year old, and someone is trying to take away her children and her sanity. I don't usually like stories where women are being gaslighted and especially ones where women are held against their will in mental health facilities, but this one was just different enough to make me read the whole book in one sitting.
Miriam has just come home with baby Samuel and her five year daughter doesn't want a baby brother and is already acting up when Miriam hears a voice coming from the baby monitor; a voice saying "Your mommy doesn't love you". Jeremy, her husband doesn't believe her, mostly because she suffered from postpartum psychosis with her first birth and he fears it is happening again.
Miriam fears she is being watched and Olivia insists someone is talking to her through the monitor, but Jeremy fears for her mental health and makes arrangements for her to attend a wellness center that is really a mental health facility that is locked down and takes away her. phone. While she is at this facility she meets a friend named Kate who tries to help her figure out what is going on since Olivia won't see her and tells her she has another mommy and someone sent a resignation to Miriam's employer without her consent. Lots of twists and turns and I rooted for Miriam to gain the upper hand in this fight for her life. I did find the ending to be lacking because it wasn't really clear what happened but overall I enjoyed this book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
THE BABY MONITOR was the stuff of nightmares--someone hacking into your baby monitor not only to watch you but to say awful things to your five-year-old daughter who is already feeling uneasy about her new sibling. Because Miriam suffered from post-partum psychosis with her first child, her husband Jeremy is keeping a close watch on her after the birth of their son. When she starts showing the same behavior that she did before, Jeremy takes action.
It was very easy to connect with the main character Miriam. She's exhausted and confused, but everyone is telling her she's imagining things. But someone is manipulating her because they're trying to take something from Miriam. Is it her husband, having a secret affair and trying to drive her crazy so he can take the kids? Is it someone in her inner circle of friends, or is it someone from Miriam's past out for retribution?
There were many twists and turns, and the ending was quite satisfying. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the early copy. THE BABY MONITOR will publish February 1, 2024.
What an exciting rollercoaster ride through the lens of a baby monitor. It revolves around a strong woman who fights relentlessly for her daughter’s safety against unusual threats within their home.
The main character, despite being surrounded by fear, remains resolute. Her courage and determination are commendable. The narrative intertwines elements of anxiety and fear, yet beautifully captures the profound bond between a parent and child.
The plot is filled with unexpected twists that maintain a gripping pace till the end. It’s a fascinating blend of suspense, thrill, and a deep exploration of a mother’s love.
If you enjoy suspense-filled narratives with a strong element of parental love, this book is a must-read for you.
Thank you to Bookouture, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
As the saying goes: “Comparison is the thief of joy”. In this gripping thriller we have the main character Miriam, or as many call her, Mim. Mim has a history of postpartum psychosis after the birth of their child Olivia, or Liv. Mim and her husband Jeremy welcome their second child Samuel and this is where Mims life takes a turn for the worse. It’s the first book I read written by this author and honestly I finished it in under two days. It has so many twists and turns, the ending took me by surprise so I will not say much more!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookoture for the opportunity of an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a great story, but at the same time a creepy one. I am glad I used an old fashioned baby monitor when my son was born, because I would not have wanted to deal with this kind of situations. I know the modern ones have a lot more advantages, but there is that danger lurking too. I most certainly don't want to invite too many creeps into my home, but I guess it's something that is hard to avoid.
I found it difficult at first to determine who was the villain for me in this story, but little by little I started to point my finger in a certain direction. Was I right though or did the author keep a joker up her sleeve?
I could not blame Mim for feeling the way she felt. After all, I guess I would start thinking I went crazy and paranoid as well.
When you feel utterly alone, because everybody you trusted seems to abandon you, it's time to make it all go away.
I loved this book. The characters are great, the suspense is wonderful and the confusion is amazing. I secretly hope there is a sequel, because I feel like the story is not finished yet. 5 stars
Mystery thrillers are my favorite genre to read. I read them so much that for some books, I’ve gotten pretty good about figuring out who the culprit is, but then I read The Baby Monitor… This book had me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out who was the mastermind behind everything. Sure, there were moments where the book seemed to slow down, but the majority of it felt like a high-speed train going downhill at top speed all the way to the end. I couldn’t stop reading; with every flip of the page, I was desperate to find out what was happening and solve the mystery. And that ending! It was an absolute twist - something I wasn’t expecting at all, something I haven’t read in a thriller until now.
Walker’s character development was off the charts. Throughout the book, I was questioning everyone’s motives - maybe Miriam did it, maybe it was one of her friends, her mother, her husband, her therapist. Walker has an excellent way of making the innocent sound guilty to keep readers wondering as they read. (Side Note: Miriam’s friend Katy from the Hermitage retreat needs her own mystery about her past leading up to the Hermitage stay where she meets Miriam - I think there’s a lot to unpack there.) One frustration I had with the characters was Miriam’s decision-making. She clearly isn’t a mystery thriller/suspense reader because she made some questionable/dumb decisions. And yes, I understand that the author purposely created her that way, but sometimes it was annoying. I just wanted to stand in front of her and yell in her face, telling her what to do. Which all that goes back to my point: Walker’s character development was exceptional!
I chose to rate it a 4.5 rounding down to 4 because I wish we learned more about the motive and how everything was accomplished. The very ending with the twist felt rushed and like a cliffhanger to me - I don’t know if that was intentional because of another book or if we as readers are to make it up in our minds - I would have loved a few extra pages or another chapter or two detailing how all of this was planned and played out.
Recommend? ✨ Absolutely yes I recommend! This was my first thriller of 2024 and I started the year off with a BANG! I was left guessing and questioning everything to the very last page, while feeling like I was in the room with Miriam trying to help her solve the mystery.
✨ Thank you NetGalley and Bookoutre for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions above are my own.
I just finished The Baby Monitor by Rosie Walker and here are my thoughts.
Mim is exhausted. She just had her second baby and her husband is watching her closely. She had issues after her first baby was born and he is taking no chances this time.. so she Mim heard a voice through her daughter's baby monitor saying.. your mother doesn’t love you… Mim doesn’t know whether to believe her own exhausted ears.
Her husband doesn’t believe her and Liv, her 5 year old daughter, doesn’t want anything to do with her.. things couldn’t get much worse.
Her house is full of secret cameras and her husband doesn’t believe a word she has to say. Someone is messing with her life and no one believes her.. her psyche is fragile and she hasn't got the best track record.
I love thrillers like this. Ones where you always feel wrong footed right until the last chapter. I had no idea who was lying or telling the truth at all. I felt Mim was a very unreliable narrator but it felt like she could have been right and it was the best feeling ever! You don’t know who to trust. It’s funny because even at the end of the book I still felt uncertain and everything was tied up nicely.
The plot was great. I have a huge beef with those kinds of baby monitors and this really took it to new levels of fear. It was well paced and I never got bored. The writing was definitely very good and I liked the overall tone of the whole thing.
4 stars
Great psychological thriller

Rosie Walker’s The Baby Monitor was a fast-paced thriller that got me out of a reading slump! Miriam just had her second child and, after suffering with PPD with her first, she feels like everyone is watching her. Not just during interactions, but she’s convinced she’s on camera- all the time. And sometimes the person watching on the camera is talking to her 5 year old daughter, telling her that her mommy doesn’t love her anymore, alienating her at a difficult time.
There was so much tension in this book- Miriam felt like an unreliable narrator throughout and I went back and forth so many times on believing her. Moments of vindication, like when her friend Zain confirmed there were cameras everywhere, were immediately questioned. Is Miriam making this up? Does Zain really exist (maybe I’m too paranoid too?!)?
Add to this how very relatable Miriam was as a new mom- I immediately was brought back to the early days of questioning whether I was doing everything right. Validating her feelings by relating them to your own made it hard to distrust Miriam, even though your instincts screamed something was off.
My favorite part was the epilogue. It was fun to trace back the “truth” through the story and see how it was woven in, but also to take what you know and try to put together what happened next. This was a great psychological thriller that I highly recommend!
Walker masterfully crafts a narrative filled with suspense and psychological intrigue. The protagonist, a devoted mother, faces an unimaginable nightmare when she begins to question the safety of her own home and the trustworthiness of those closest to her. The plot thickens as her daughter becomes distant and a mysterious voice continues to haunt them, culminating in a heart-stopping incident that leaves her child hospitalized.
What makes "The Baby Monitor" stand out is its exploration of maternal instinct against a backdrop of deceit and manipulation. Walker delves deep into the psyche of a woman who is battling not just external threats, but also the demons of her past and the skepticism of her own husband. The tension is palpable as she begins to unravel the mystery, revealing the disturbing reality of someone close trying to sabotage her life.
The narrative is a roller coaster of emotions, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they navigate the twists and turns of the story.
This is more than just a thriller; it's a profound exploration of a mother's unconditional love and her unyielding determination to protect her child at all costs. Rosie Walker has crafted a novel that is both terrifying and deeply moving, making it a must-read for anyone who loves a story that stays with them long after the last page is turned.
i very much enjoyed listening to this book - once i got used to the scottish accent!
This book explores how far your trust in a friend or love one can extend before its broken - who can you trust if you can't trust your husband or friends?!
I did not like Liv as a character - a spoilt brat to be honest - but i think that is due to the 'soft parenting' of Jeremy & Miriam. The only critisism i have of the narration/writing is that the characters 'cleared their throat' a lot, with the narrator making the noise of coughing/clearing throat, i don't think this was neccessary.
It was twisty and turny and kept you guessing all the way through.
it left me hanging though - is there going to be a sequel? there certainly should be!!
What happened to Zane? What happened after they got home?
Why have I never read a Rosie Walker book before now? I've literally spent the afternoon obsessing over it!
Knowing someone was watching my every move would be enough, but for them to then communicate with my child through the baby monitor...can you even begin to imagine?
The plot is fast paced, addictive and before I knew it, boom I was finished!
With Mim having a history of post-partum psychosis it got you thinking was it her mind playing tricks on her, or was there someone playing games to make her think she was losing her mind.
The characters are well developed and it took me a while before I could form any bonds with them...who could you trust?
I found it hard to read to start off with purely because of how raw and deep the feelings and thoughts were from the very start, but I was gripped. It felt like reading a real life diary of a new mum going through postpartum psychosis/depression.
The thoughts were dark, scary and really sad, most authors wouldn't "go there" and many real life mothers would be too ashamed to admit but I loved how this also made it feel real and vulnerable and a stark reminder to get help as those feelings can happen to anybody!
I really couldn't tell which direction this was going, was the monster all in her own mind, who was deceiving her, who was messing with her head and how was it all going to end... I did predict the "villain" but it didn't matter because how it was delivered and that cliff hanger ending was absolute genius. Brilliant, brilliant book.
A mom made to feel like she’s going crazy and the use of technology to help that intensity is scary in the world we live in today. Factor in not feeling you can trust your husband and just loving your kids so fiercely you don’t want to lose them, #TheBabyMonitor had me on the edge of my seat ready to finish it. I thought I knew all along who the bad guy was, but at the very end, the talented #RosieWalker threw in a twist I did not expect!
Thank you, Rosie Walker, Bookouture, & netgalley for my copy! All opinions are my own.
This was a Super High-Charged Thriller. So much to think about: a young family, trusted friends, smart home technology, dark thoughts, and shady motives. These all combine to make a terrifying mess and impending destruction of the family. It was written to engage until the very end. I could feel exactly what the family was going through as the story unfolded and developed into shear heart-wrenching pain. Highly recommend this.
What a book! I loved that it was more than a thriller, it also had so many relatable elements about parenthood, relationships and trust. It's well written and just whbe you think you know what's happening, it all switches up. It's constantly moving forward and the writing style flows so perfectly that you just get sucked in and can't put it down til thst very last page!
I sped through this book and really enjoyed it. The story had me gripped from the start and I couldn’t put it down. The author describes the first few days with a newborn really well and it really had some resonating moments as well as terrifying ones. I look forward to reading more of this authors work in the future.
omg i was not expecting all of those plot twist i had so many situation in my head but the the revel literately shocked me my jaw hit the floor omg would recommend ya should read it thriller readers
