Love in Galway #1

Morbidly Yours

Rate this book
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene.

Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband.

When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance.

But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states.

If they think it’s possible to ignore their connection, they’re dead wrong.

I know I’m giving like, everything 5 stars lately but I literally do not care shut up because listen:

* The MMC talks dirty in Irish
* He has a stutter which is treated with sensitivity and respect
* The FMC is a widow who loved her husband and isn’t all “oh I thought I knew what love was but now I know that I didn’t” no fuck that you can love more than one person in your life
* The MMC is described as “hot in a Damien Rice song way” why aren’t more people described like this
* The MMC punches a workplace bully and it is very satisfying
* “Love is a living thing. It grows like wild brambles, taking over everything. Love had taken me hostage.” Like are you kidding me right now?

Anyway read this book immediately. Stop what you’re doing - this is more important.

This book was equal parts sweet 🍬 and spicy. 🌶️

The first half is much more character driven, readers will get to know the MC’s gradually as they get to know each other in this true opposites attract romance. He’s a shy Irish Mortician who has been given a deadline of six months to find a wife or else forfeit his chance to inherit his family’s undertaking business. She’s a bubbly Animator from Texas who moves to Ireland for a fresh start after her husband’s passing.

After an awkward meeting, they begin to form a friendship which gradually evolves into more. Initially, she is trying to help him find dates, but he very quickly develops feelings for her and his attempts to meet someone seem to always lead him back to her. It takes her a little longer to come to terms with her budding emotions because of some guilt she feels related to her husband’s passing. At first, she is only open to a physical relationship and this is where the plot gets spicy. I think the readers who will enjoy this most are the ones who are most excited about the use of Irish/Gaeilge dirty talk in the bedroom. I wouldn’t say I was opposed to it, but it didn’t really get me overly excited either. I know there’s a whole lot of people out there who will absolutely love it though! Definitely pick this one up if that’s you!

Personally, I was more interested in the sweet side of this story than the spicy side. I loved how genuine and kind both MMC’s were to each other. They were both helper personalities and I always love it when two sacrificial people are paired together in romance. So often, this personality type gives more than they get and gets taken advantage of, so I love seeing both people benefit equally from the relationship. 💖

I honestly liked this one about as much as I expected to. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It was very cute, but ultimately not my favorite. If I had one gripe, it would be that her “Texas charm” was a bit overdone. I do wonder if the same could be true for his Irish persona, but since I’m not Irish, it’s a little harder to say. They were still a cute pairing though and their other qualities redeemed them.

**Side note: The cover made me think this would be a spooky rom-com but it really wasn’t. No Fall/Halloween vibes to be found. Just a heads up in case you were hoping to find that here.

Pre-read: Callum’s aversion to taking someone on a date is so relatable. 😆 The introverts are my people.

if you like a slightly awkward, very shy, soft-spoken, adorable mmc… look no further. callum is a cutie patootie.🥺

i do wish that this were based during halloween/autumn because i’m here for the seasonal vibes… but alas, it is not. that’s my fault for assuming. 🙂‍↔️ (i didn’t let this influence my rating)

regardless, the funeral home vibes were great and the characters were precious. ireland sounds like a dream. the slow burn was pretty good. once again, callum is adorable.

i don’t know how long I’ll remember the details of this story (i blame the adhd), but i’m glad i read this cutesty little book!

we love a gentle, kind book boyfriend with an Irish accent. 💕

Had it not been for an invitation from the Publisher, I probably would’ve have scrolled right by this ROM COM with the cartoon cover-it didn’t appeal to me-but now I understand it and although it fits with Lark’s career- it’s a bit misleading! DON’T let it fool you-this is one SPICY 🌶️ book which leaves NOTHING to the imagination.

Callum Flannelly is an Undertaker who can only inherit the family business under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. And, he only has 5 months left to find a wife. He finds dating awkward-and the APPs aren’t working for him.

Lark Thompson is a vivacious American cartoon creator and animator from Texas who came to Galway, Ireland for a fresh start away from the memories of losing her husband. Turns out her accommodations are right beside a funeral home. Not great for anyone, let alone a Widow.

When Lark learns of her neighbors dilemma, she agrees to help him. Because she has sworn off of finding love for herself, they are able to become friends-taking all of the pressure off. But, as their friendship grows-so does their mutual attraction.

Will she really be able to watch him connect with someone else? And, will he really let her return to the United Staes?

While I enjoyed some aspects of the story, such as the friendships and “found family” other aspects were a BIG MISS for me.

The bedroom door is WIDE OPEN, and if you are a reader like me, who prefers to SKIM past these scenes, you will be skimming through MOST of the entire second half of the book!! There is even an Irish/Gaeilge Pronunciation and Translation guide included in the back which will teach you the translations of all of the spicier/cruder terms used for sexual acts and our more intimate body parts. Not for me.

This will be a more satisfying read for those who prefer the door open, and for those who enjoy the humor in the book. It’s the first in the “Love in Galway”series, but it’s not a series that is a fit for me, so despite enjoying some aspects of the book-I will stop here.

TW: Death of loved ones and brief depictions of caring for those departed in a funeral home.

You know, I really didn’t vibe with the plot or the overall vibes, but I did have a VERY STRONG emotional connection with the main character.

🪦 tropes:🪦

•friends to lovers
•neighbors
•Ireland small town
•mortician x graphic design
•shy x sunshine

I believe the more representation in a book, the better. I love seeing myself in a character, it makes me feel seen. This book had LOTS of good representation!

-mmc has a stutter. I struggled with a stutter when I was younger and i totally get the feeling.

-mmc is demisexual. I feel like this is a very unrepresented group and it was nice to have that glimpse into his dating life.

-fmc hates confrontation. I know a lot of fmcs are written very strong and they love confrontation, but it was refreshing and honestly, realistic to see a girl who’s afraid of causing conflict. Especially in the workplace. HR is a nightmare.

Now on to the plot.

Not really my favorite. It was just kinda boring. I might have missed it, but they never talked about his stutter. This was a HUGE thing and his main insecurity. I feel like a simple conversation would’ve invited a lot of intimacy and trust. Missed opportunities always enrage me.

I didn’t feel any connection or personal investment to the plot. There was a Visa plot and a marriage clause inheritance plot but non of it really captured my attention. I was glad it was over by the end cause I really couldn’t have cared less about the plot.

3/5 stars 🌟

A peppy, recently widowed, Texan animator moves next door to a shy Irish undertaker, and despite their many differences, there is no denying an instant connection. This is such a cute story & definitely felt unique!! I loved the blending of Irish and Texas slang and cultures. Callum + Lark are both so likable and gentle with each other & their respective hang ups. Slow burn with open door spice, lots of pining, a fair share of miscommunication, a third act breakup, and a super sweet happily ever after. I look forward to more by this author! 4.5 stars

This book was very...average. It was fun and I had a good time, but there really wasn't much to this book.

I really struggled with the characters in this one. It's not that I didn't like them, I just couldn't connect with them and it just felt overall very awkward. I liked Callum he was such a sweetheart, but Lark was meh in my opinion. I really didn't get much chemistry between them which was kinda disappointing. I thought the spice in this was not...great. It had issues for sure. I will say, however, that I really loved the representation in this book. We go over asexuality, speech impediments, and overall inclusivity. There's a lot of diversity with these characters!

The plot itself was very lackluster. I liked the idea of the, "you have to marry by this date if you want your inheritance," but I think the actual execution fell short. It had the potential to be good, but it really just missed. If you were to ask me exactly what the plot was in this book, I wouldn't be able to tell you. It felt all over the place at times and I could not put my finger on the plot for the life of me.

Overall, this book was cute but it definitely had problems. I liked the premise of it, but execution severely lacked. Callum and Lark had adorable moments, but this book just wasn't for me. It was short and fast-paced, but I think others would enjoy more than me!

I need a feel good romance and I think this is going to do the trick 😌💚

This is Gaelic for "pulse of my heart, love of my heart." 🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧

(TW: death of a spouse)

audio: 5 stars (listen the Irish accent did things to me )
plot: 4 stars

This was SO FLIPPING CUTE AHHHHHHHHH

This was such a feel good book, the kind of book that gives you butterflies because of how ADORABLE the mcs are 😭 Callum was such a sweetheart🤧 This man had social anxiety and a stutter that made him so endearing I cannottttttt😭 Lark, whose husband died 2 years ago, was this tornado that got him out of his shell and just accepted him and helped him🤧 Their love was so pure and healing for both of them.
I will say, the tiny animation subplot was kind of meh but I get that it was necessary for the main plot.

Also the Irish dirty talk?? Tell me more because oml listening to that was an ✨experience✨

Had such high expectations for this one, but it just fell really short for me. It started off promising, but the writing style and pacing made it really hard to connect with these characters and to stay intrigued. When I wasn’t confused, I was just kinda bored. There were a few (very few) cute moments but that was about it. 😔

I wish I could rate the first half of this book separately from the second, because the first half gets five stars easily.

Lark was struggling with her grief but overall she was doing great, and Callum was so adorable, I wanted to hug him. I wasn’t a fan of her trying to find him a girlfriend and him going on dates with other people, but their chemistry was so good and the writing so entertaining that I let it pass.

Unfortunately after all that amazing buildup, the final chapters of this book happened, and, ngl, I understood the title all too well; I really wanted to die a few times.

Callum turned from an adorable, shy introvert into a cringe monster who decided to sing his love declaration instead of just talking like a normal human. He also asked the OW to accompany him on her fiddle. I don’t know how cringe the lyrics were, I just couldn’t get myself to read them, sorry.

Lark on the other hand became a selfish bitch who for some reason decided to get the guy fall in love with her only to dump him for no good reason.

Ohh how I hate when third act breakups ruin great books! Whyyyyyy???

Overall I really enjoyed this, but the last few chapters left a bad taste in my mouth.

Morbidly Yours is a sweet and emotional story about a grieving mortician and animator learning to lean on each other and falling in love in the process. After her husband's death 2 years ago, Lark is ready to move on and decides a fresh start in Ireland is right for her. However, despite trying to get away from death and grief, her new neighbor, Callum, just so happens to be a mortician. When Callum's grandad passed he made it a condition that Callum must be married by his 35th birthday in order to inherit the family mortuary. When Callum and Lark become fast friends, Lark makes it her mission to get Callum married; however, that is easier said than done when she finds herself falling for him.

This is an absolutely fun and beautiful story, full of tropes including he falls first, friends with benefits, and grumpy x sunshine. Callum and Lark were so cute and healthy for each other; they fit perfectly. I am officially adding Callum to my list of book boyfriends, he is such a shy cinnamon roll, and combined with the dirty talking; I was in heaven! While grief is a major component in this story, it was done very well; I liked how it was showcased in different ways but never got too heavy. The only reason this was not a five-star read for me, is because of the third-act conflict. I did not like how it was handled; it felt very one-sided and unnecessary.

A cute read with one of the best cinnamon roll MMC's.

Callum effectively carried this book on his back and he's the reason I didn't rate this book lower. I just could not get behind Lark, the FMC. One of the main lessons she needed to learn from her previous marriage was to not be so selfish, and she failed spectacularly. It was at times hard to read because of the way she would treat Cal or the decisions she would make in regards to their growing relationship. He just deserved so much more than what she was scraping together for him.

Obviously, this was kind of the point of her character's arc, but it just wasn't sitting well with me.

But there were a lot of really cute moments and I enjoyed seeing Cal come out of his shell and be more comfortable in his skin, something that is very relatable for me 💚

Sprightly romance featuring a socially anxious demisexual mortician and the lively animator who helps him get a life while he helps her move on from the death of her husband. You may be picking up a theme here, ahaha.

It's invigoratingly done. Callum's job and his issues including a stutter are treated with respect and frankness (eg at once acknowledging the disconcerting elements of his job, leaning in to dark humour, but understanding its importance and the sensitivity it calls for). He's a lovely lead, kind hearted and deep feeling. Lark is perky on the surface, but a chronic conflict-avoider racked with guilt over her husband's death in a car crash after they'd rowed.

It had a few issues--I didn't feel most of the sex scenes moved anything forward in character or plot, which makes them skippable--but it's a debut, be fair. Highly readable, hugely likeable, and a bit out of the ordinary: I enjoyed it very much.

I am now obsessed with how come one edition has Callum with a black shirt and all the other ones have the same image with a white shirt, wtf.

I DNFed this at about 50% but it's not because of the book. It's me. I need a thriller. Something slashery - and I think I'll come back to this?

The writing and the development of the romance is actually 10000% adorable and something I would normally love. I'm just having a TIME of it these days, and this isn't holding my attention the way I want it to - because I'm stressed.

HOWEVER - if it sounds good to you then I think you should read and enjoy.

How is this a debut novel. Wtf it’s so good! Unique concept, heartfelt, AND spicy?! I was genuinely blown away at how much I loved it. Honestly this was a perfect fall transition book for me!

- Neighbors
- He falls first and harder
- A nickname in a different language, but she doesn’t know what it means
- Friends with benefits

DNF at 29%. This was just not engaging. Most of the writing, whether it be dialogue or prose feels forced. I just couldn’t get into any rhythm.
Also I’ve never heard of Ireland being famous for being friendly?? What I know about the Irish is that they love calling you a cunt and giving absolutely devastating fashion remarks when you wear a stupid outfit.

Awww, I absolutely adored this book!! The cover alone sold me, but the story itself hooked me from the start. Lark is the sunshiney, blonde, perky American who moves to Ireland for a year to work at an animation studio. She’s running from a sad past, so when she accidentally opens her next door neighbor’s package and discovers body bags, she’s understandably worried. She did NOT sign up to live next to a serial killer, thank you very much.

Turns out, the quiet and shy Callum is an undertaker, running his family business after losing his grandfather. Which is in danger of being sold right for under him, Lark soon finds out. His greedy absentee father has discovered the clause in Grandda’s will; Callum must marry by the time he’s 35 or lose the business. He has nine months.

Lark decides to help Callum date. She’s not interested in love or marriage after hers ended so badly, but she can’t help but be attracted to Callum. And the more time they spend together, the more they fall. But Lark’s visa is coming to an end soon, and Callum’s deadline looms over them both. I won’t spoil the ending, but I completely loved Lark and Callum. They’re so sweet, perfect opposites, and I just couldn’t get enough of them. So well done!

Dosłownie książka na raz, zaczęłam czytać i wstałam z kanapy jak skończyłam. Przyjemnie spędzony czas, Callum to wielka zielona flaga!
I love it.

ALE!! Dlaczego ta książka ma znacznik 16+? Tam normalnie są sceny ich zbliżeń i to nie tak opisane dookoła tylko całkiem opisowe. To książka kierowana do dorosłych czytelników z romansem dwójki dorosłych ludzi około 30-stki. Raczej autorka nie kierowała tej historii do nastolatek.

“Be more positive!”, they said, so here we go: “Morbidly Yours” wasn’t horrible! Just very bad.

30-year-old widow Lark flees her native Texas, her embittered sister-in-law Rachel, who cyber-stalks her, to Ireland to work as an animator for a local studio. She moves into a house next to the undertaker’s, our male protagonist, Callum, who is about as interesting as a dead tree in winter.

At first, the chemistry and banter between the two was great and I looked forward to lots of fun. What followed, though, was basically this:

Lark: Callum is so wonderful but I must not fall in love with him because I practically killed my husband because we had an argument and he drove recklessly around afterwards.

Callum: Lark is so wonderful but I must not fall in love with her because I need to marry someone I don’t love to keep my business from falling into the hands of a greedy corporation.

Lark: Let’s be friends with benefits, though! (I cannot emotionally handle that but somehow everything will be ok!)

Callum: Yes! (I cannot handle it either but…)

Predictably, next came some pretty nice and sensitive intimate scenes (usually I would have written “smut” but that’s the only well-written part so the latter term felt too crude).

Both Lark and Callum know communication is key and, consequently…

»Were we just going to ignore what just happened? The words were right there, resting on my tongue like a piece of hard toffee. I swallowed them down. Better left unsaid.«

With that, the vicious circle of “I love (him/her) but must not!” goes on and on and on… Mixed among all this are workplace drama, violence, a token non-binary person, whereas morbidity on the other hand is not really part of all this. Callum is supposed to be demi-sexual and/or demi-romantic (the author herself didn’t seem to be sure) but the representation here is just plain bad.

Oh, and, of course, there’s a third-act breakup so dumb I actually face-palmed.

The writing style and use of language is at high school level and the pacing varies between racing and Valium-induced creeping along.

One star out of five.

This book has…
- 30+ age MMC and FMC
- found family
- MMC that is introverted & demisexual - did I also mention he’s tall, dark haired, wears glasses and dresses like he belong on Peaky Blinders? He also has a stutter (yay for disability rep!), and he falls first!
- FMC is a Dolly Parton loving, very perky, Texas raised Widow.
- excellent 🌶️🌶️ (Did I mention the Irish dirty talk?)
- friends to lovers & opposites attract

What I loved…
This book had me giggling and kicking my feet! I absolutely adored the relationship between our MMC and FMC. The concept was so very adorable and I loved our MMC. I loved seeing the stutter representation and instantly connected with our MMC bc of it. I’ve read other books with this (stutter or speech disorder) representation where it felt like the character’s stutter was added to advance the plot and not as a way to represent a community. Ivy Fairbanks however did a wonderful job representing the community and including meaningful representation in the process. I also think she handled grief well throughout the novel.

What didn’t work for me - but might work for you…
I personally did not connect with the FMC at all. I loved the interactions between our MMC and FMC but when either one of them were alone I had a hard time being interested in the plot. That said, it is possible this is a me problem, not a book problem. Those who have felt the loss of family or have better empathetic ability toward loss may find it easy to connect with the main characters.

In the end I am rounding up to 4⭐️ bc I do think this is an good book and could be a perfect book for the right individual, even if it wasn't the right book for me personally.

Thank you NetGalley and Putnam Books for sending this book (eARC) for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Weak FMCs are not my jam, at all. Especially when one of the source's of conflict is an overdone, textbook cliché sexually harassing coworker. Gross from all sides.

This had potential. The idea behind it was promising–an animator fleeing to Ireland in her grief, moving next door to a funeral home–seemingly unique. But I found myself bored through about 50% of it, and it all was very predictable, almost overly so. I appreciated the emphasis on Callum's social anxiety and his stutter, as it felt honest to those characteristics. However the addition of his asexuality...definitely felt like poor representation and an afterthought. Lark's professional storylines were very fun for me to read through as a graphic designer, but not enough for me to get over her lack of self respect in the end.

Soft DNF @ 37 percent. GUYS WHY AM I LIKE THIS. I KNOW WHY BECAUSE NOTHING IS COMPARING AGAINST ALCHEMISED... ughhhh I switched to the audio book. still nothing for this one on how I felt, the banter wasn't great, and they had decent backstories but overall I didn't feel any chemistry ? I also don't find the main male character attractive... that's a me problem tho I think.

Main male character is an undertaker, also super awkward, quirky, FMC was bubbly, sunshine. I kinda wish he was this grumpy, dark broody undertaker, so again it was probably a me problem.

This book is morbidly good! 😭 Callum and Lark had me giggling and kicking my feet the entire time. Their chemistry was on fire, the banter was hilarious, and the slow burn gave me all the butterflies. I loved that they were best friends before anything else, and the death humor had me cracking up.

Callum is the definition of a sweet, soft boy, and his inner monologue were just the best. Lark's bubbly personality made them the perfect pair, though she did go back and forth on her feelings a bit, which was frustrating at times.

Morbidly Yours was an absolute treat, balancing humor, grief, and unexpected connections. The spicy moments were seriously hot, especially the Irish dirty talk, even if I butchered it without referencing the author's note. 🤭

Overall, I had such a good time reading this debut romance. I can’t wait to see what the Ivy comes up with next!
