Fourteen-year-old Danielle McGowan always suspected her imagination was seriously overactive.
But when only she can see a pint-sized dragon who turns up over the summer and starts following her around, Danielle begins to worry she's actually losing her mind. Her doubts quickly transform into fear when shadows she's seen circling above transform into winged demons.
And their intent is to kill.
While going to school every day trying to fit in and pretending her life is totally normal, Danielle must figure out who her true friends really are, and how her feelings for a fascinating but troubled boy fit into her struggle to overcome the danger that stalks her. But Danielle was born with a power she is just starting to understand. She must tap into her hidden strength before the power of darkness destroys her.
Elvie Richter lives in New York City with her husband and her cat, Alexander. She occasionally spots an Air Dragon floating in the trees above Central Park.
14 year old Danielle is lonely. She has been ditched by her best and only friend and she just found out her mom and she have very little money. One day, she spots a gold egg and brings it to her room. Instead of the money she is hoping to get from the egg, a tiny beautiful dragon pops out. Danielle's world is thrown on it's head, and she has no idea if she is going crazy or not. The imagery of this book was amazing. The author creates an entire secret world of creatures, each one unique and interesting. The descriptions are so detailed that the animals(mythical beings?)become so vivid to me while reading, as if I could reach out and touch them. I was completely blown away by what she was able to create in this story. Danielle was a really cute character. She was aware of the things going on in the world, be it her mom's secret lack of funds, or her loss of friends, and she still stays so positive. There were times where I experienced the loneliness right along with her. I rooted for her every step of the way. My favorite was when she went off in a totally random, funny tangent about what she expected to happen. Maldova was hysterical, full of awkward grammar and lofty expectations. The way she approached every situation was a surprise, her attitude appalling yet fun. The two of them together made such a unique team. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is geared towards a younger audience, but can be appreciated by any age, as long as they like fantastical creatures and magic. I enjoyed this book and will read more by this author, hopefully this is the first in a series. I received this book from the author and Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.
As a GoodReads contest winner I received this book. As it was a Young Adult Novel I gave it to my daughter to read and the following is her review.
I love fantasy books about magic so this book caught my interest right away! From the very first page you were thrown into the world of Danielle, a seemingly ordinary human girl who happens upon something very magical indeed. I loved this book from start to finish because it keeps you intrigued throughout. You really bond with the main character of Danielle because you feel everything she feels as she discovers the new magical world she has suddenly been thrown into. From Dragons to Shadow creatures this book is a fun read and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I read this book in one sitting, and I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. Loved every page!
Not altogether terrible, but far too twee for me. The dialogue is quite stiff, even when it's trying for funny, and the whole thing skews far younger than one would expect from the book's description.
