Cute and fun book. It's a great, quick, and easy read. I'm giving it four stars because I would have liked a bit more plot. I was really invested in why her aunt was receiving threatening letters, and then the mystery was just quickly resolved.

I liked how Maddox and Penny developed throughout the book, but I wish there was more focus on the surrounding events. Maddox and Penny's relationship felt like a slow burn and insta-love combined. The slow burn aspect might be because one day took up half the book, so it was definitely more insta-love. They're not a couple you'd expect to get together, but that makes it fun. However, a lot of things happened too fast, and if the pacing were just a little slower, I would have enjoyed it even more.

Ohh I loved how Maddox took care of her and spoiled her—I want that, haha!

Penny is cash poor but inherits her aunt’s falling down shack with multi million dollar views of Puget Sound. Maddox is the long suffering developer next door who’s been trying in vain to scoop the property up from first Aunt Elsie and now Penny.

These two couldn’t be more different yet they find themselves drawn to each other despite their adversarial and contentious encounters. Will they solve the mystery of the gnomes and be able to decipher the “lost treasure” contained within the property’s metes and bounds. Throw in a barely habitable Airstream trailer and a massive dog named Gus, and it’s a whole lot of chaos packed into one relatively short read.

I really enjoyed the humor and quirkiness of this book.

This book is cute and fun and had some good moments. At times it was hard to put down. It did drag a tiny bit though. I LOVED the incorporation of the gnomes! I got an advanced readers copy of this from book sirens, but my review is unbiased.

A Gnome Inheritance was a very quick, easy read, and I really wanted to like it, but it just fell flat for me. I definitely am not a fan of the insta-love, and maybe that was part of the reason I didn't care for this book as much as I thought I would. I do think that the author has a way with words, and she can be very descriptive and really set the stage for the reader. I definitely enjoyed. I did enjoy the premise of the book, and I enjoyed the characters as well.

Another miss for me. I actually finished this one, but I really didn’t enjoy it. It felt like a weird fever dream. There was absolutely NO chemistry between the two mains, there wasn’t much background on them, and the whole plot didn’t make sense. The big mystery was only semi-revealed. I liked the dog though 🤷‍♀️

The Crazy Inheritance . . .

Penny Allen, a free-spirited soul, inherited her Aunt Elsie’s little white pioneer cabin with blue shutters. The weeds were waist-high. Her Great Dane, Gus, joined her in the yard. She glanced at the garden gnomes all along the side of the house. The inside was even worse since it appeared her aunt was a hoarder. It even smelled bad inside, probably from the number of plastic garbage bags up against the walls up to the ceiling. She ran outside, gagging, and a deep male voice caught her attention. Maddox Griffiths, uptight and straight-laced, thought the gnomes in the yard were creepy and should be hidden away, but Penny gushed about how cute the one with the gurgling teacup was. He wanted to make an offer on the property and get rid of everything. But before they could talk, a huge Great Dane galloped around the corner of the house and leaped at him! Without a word, Maddox got up scowling and walked away. Penny never got upset at anything (even if she should) and wanted to paint a rainbow on the house or a peace and love mural. This was going to be an interesting project when she began to get the wreck of a house repaired.

While Penny is ready to follow clues to a rumored treasure, Maddox is trying to figure out why he is so drawn to the woman. Could these two actually fall in love? Or will Penny give up on the project and cut her losses?

A catchy title is what drew me into reading this fun book . I immediately fell in love with the quirky, free spirited Penny and her hunk of a dog, Gus! Living in an old Airstream without indoor working plumbing was the least of her problems in this story. She inherited her Aunt Elise's home and has come to fulfill her aunt's last wishes. The brooding next door neighbor, Maddox is just one of the complications she tackles to keep her promise to her aunt. Maddox is buttoned up, wealthy and handsome and not someone she normally spends time with, but when he steps up when she needs him the most a flame of attraction begins to burn. The mystery and resulting danger make this more than a candy -coated romance. Penny gets into tricky situations because of her independent and impetuous personality leading to a swoon worthy friendship with Maddox filled with slow burns and gentle feelings. Maddox became a hero right before my eyes!
This is my first book by Anna Alkire and what I loved most about it was how funny and descriptive Penny quips and self-observations were. I laughed out loud and thought "yea I've been there too!" It was a delightful, easy on your soul read that when finished, left me with a smile.

A Gnome Inheritance by Anna Alkire was so much more than I expected. First, who can resist a rom-com type of novel which involves gnomes. Second, the quirky characters are very memorable and despite the Series of Unfortunate Events vibe that follows Penny, this is well worth the read.

Penny is a free spirit--willing to follow the trail which vaguely emerges ahead. Promising her aunt she would take care of her estate, Penny finds herself in Seattle coming head to head with a sexy neighbor and a group of thugs. Maddox has been waiting for the decrepit property next door to become available--either to sell or own--at times it is unclear; but what Maddox really dislikes are the army of gnomes his deceased neighbor had corralled throughout her yard. The setting is ripe for sparks to fly between Penny and Maddox. Luckily, Alkire delivers.

I really enjoyed just how quirky both Penny and Maddox were. The verbal banter and foreplay between the two is humorous and endearing all at once. While the outside antagonist at times seems very random, the story does start coming together and the climax with the culprits is great.

Even better though is the great HEA that Alkire builds up to. It demonstrated the right amount of sacrifice and acceptance both Penny and Maddox needed and deserved.

'A Gnome Inheritance' was delightful. The levity-filled plot was filled with intrigue, suspense, action, reminiscing, and falling for the guy next door. Free-spirited Penny and straight-laced Maddox, the protagonists, were total opposites, yet they tried to reach their HEA. I loved the humorous quips the author used such as, "They were as far apart as a fish in a stream and a pen in an office," and, "She got back to the house covered in sticky grime, wondering if she could write “wash me” on her skin," or this gem, "Clearly, he was on an epic quest with the possibility of death lingering. For an encore, a meteor would slap him in the face."
Moreover, I liked the figurative language such as, "Her brain had been knocked on like a heavy package then shaken around to see what was inside," and, "The gritty dust in her hair was falling into her eyes and onto her mouth. Sharp-edged particles, maybe fiberglass from Aunt Elsie’s attic, were slicing at her—like ants marching around, cutting her with tiny spurs." Lastly, this quip, "The universe was dishing her out a heaping pile of steaming misery."
Overall, I liked the amusing narrative.

Biologist Penny Allen has inherited a house from an estranged aunt and arrives in vintage Airstream trailer with her dog, Gus to check it out. There's possibly a secret treasure but the property is nearly falling down and danger lurks everywhere from the barely standing house, to some villains trying to cause her harm in a variety of ways.

Next door to her aunt's house lives, Maddox, a successful but lonely man who longs to raze the house next door. Then the mess that is Penny Allen arrives and he's helping her out of one mess to another.

Gus and Maddox are an unlikely pair but within a short amount of time, both are having a major impact on the other and there's a glimmer of hope that something might be made of their connection. This was a sweet romance and the odd couple aspect of the relationship makes for quite a bit of conflict and angst. Both characters have issues from the past that haven't been resolved so it provides a backdrop for all the crazy happening around them. Fortunately, they are both likeable characters and make the reading experience very enjoyable.

Overall, I give this 3.5 stars. Thank you to BooksSirens and the writer for the free advanced reader copy. I have provided this review voluntarily.

Gnomes, a Great Dane, a mystery, lots of fun and sizzling romance!

A Gnome Inheritance begins with Penny arriving in Seattle to clear out and possibly renovate the old rundown pioneer cabin she has inherited from her reclusive Aunt Elsie. The house is in an upmarket neighbourhood and nextdoor neighbour Maddox views it as an eyesore that he’d love to bulldoze and redevelop the site. When Penny turns up Maddox is less than impressed, especially since she seems to be everything that he is not! Penny is free-spirited, impulsive and a bit of a whirlwind whereas Maddox seems to be quite uptight, materialistic and very grumpy.. both are stubborn and determined!

Along with the house, Penny also inherited an army of garden gnomes which she adores and Maddox detests. Maddox is also not keen on Penny’s enormous side-kick, her Great Dane Gus. No matter how hard she tries, things seem to keep going wrong for Penny and, against his better judgement, Maddox seems to be compelled to help her, especially when she receives threats from an unknown person.

A Gnome Inheritance is filled with lots of quirky humour as well as an underlying sizzling attraction that grows between Penny and Maddox. The story is told from the points of view of both protagonists, although, at times it seemed to switch between the two almost randomly. The characters are both fairly well developed and Penny is particularly endearing and likeable. Overall, this is a fun quick read and hugely enjoyed it. I’d recommend this to readers who like romcoms that have a sprinkling of spice.

Penny is surprised when she learns that her late Aunt Elsie bequeathed her home to her, with conditions that only she was to sort out the inside.
On arriving at what she believed would be her new home, she was taken aback when she realised that the house was very run down, and her Aunt had been a hoarder.

The grumpy next door neighbour, Maddox, a property developer amongst other things, made it clear that he was willing to do business for the land and the property when Penny was ready, but she resisted his offers.

This is a well written, action packed story, with skullduggery aplenty, and which kept me on tenterhooks, reading into the night. I did laugh out loud at one point, but really enjoyed the action, and reaction, side of things, with the author’s description of the love between Penny and her dog Gus, who is a hero.
There is also the “will they - won’t they” storyline of Penny and Maddox that had me hooked too.

I loved Penny and Maddox.
They are complete opposites, but perfect for each other.
When Penny inherits her aunts house along with instructions to not sell it,she goes in Bambi with her dog Gus who is so adorable and her best friend Kat.
When she sees the state of the house she is shocked.
She has also inherited her aunts collection of gnomes.
Maddox wants to buy the house next door, but Penny is not selling it.He absolutely hates the gnomes.
They are attracted to one another, but they both don't want to get into a relationship.
Chaos ensues as soon as Penny pulls in next door.Maddox keeps coming to her rescue.
Penny is also getting threatening notes. She wants to find out what her aunts been hiding.Penny and Maddox end up with a heartwarming happily ever after. They do go through a lot to get there.
A fabulous read with great characters, family, freindships, danger, mystery, loyality,
laughter, tears, romance and a happily ever after.
Cannot wait for Anna's next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms. Alkire has a wonderful imagination and a great sense of humor. She brings it all to this story and imbues Penny and Maddox with energy, grit, and just enough of the “being human” sort of random feelings that the reader is kept guessing at least some of the time as to what might be next.

There is also a “hidden treasure” suspense subplot that underlies the whole story and provides lots of things for Penny and Maddox to worry about (and protect each other from). And then there is Penny’s amazing Great Dane Gus, an incredibly well trained and intuitive dog that is instrumental to more than one conflict resolution with the bad guys.

As you might have guessed, there are also gnomes. Penny inherits her aunt’s run down house that comes complete with quite a few garden gnomes, which her neighbor Maddox has never liked. These sculptures also figure into the story in their own fun way.

I can imagine this book would make a great audio production. I am certainly looking forward to reading more of Ms. Alkire’s work, whatever the format.

Free spirited Penny inherits a leaning shack from her aunt with a cryptic message that she’s not to let the rest of the family know how she was living. So Penny is determined to honor her aunts last instructions so she has no family to call in to help clean up what her aunt left behind. And someone in this town doesn’t want her here and makes that abundantly clear and the violence ratchets up. But Penny won’t be put off. Maddox can’t wait for the eyesore next door to be condemned and torn down but the new owner may be more difficult to get out of his head and heart. Maddox aides Penny because it’s the neighborly thing to do and the faster he can help her finish the faster she can be gone. Right? Well we all know what happens to best laid plans. They never go as they should. Now he must re-examine his neighbor and his growing attraction and keep Penny safe. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Grumpy neighbor to the rescue!

Grumpy neighbor to the rescue! This is about Penny and Maddox. Penny has inherited a broken down home from her aunt and she sets up her trailer next to it so she can clean out the home, see if it’s repairable then sell it. The neighbor, Maddox, has offered to buy it in order to tear it down and get rid of all the gnomes that he can’t stand but she refuses and instead deliberately arranges the gnomes to look his way.

The book is funny and also has some action to it as someone is trying to get rid of her from the neighborhood. You have to love her dog Gus, because he always comes to the rescue too and he loves the neighbor. I was only confused about one thing, Maddox mentions a younger brother but never talks about him afterwards. I would have loved to know more about him. I love the ending and everything Maddox does. You can’t go wrong with this book!

This was my first read from this author, and I really liked the premise and description of this book, so I was looking forward to a cute feel-good rom-com. It was all that, but I had a hard time getting into the story. While the characters were quirky and unique, they just didn't resonate with me as much, so I found it difficult to really become immersed in the story. Definitely a quick feel-good story, but I felt like it was lacking a bit of wow factor. Liked the added mystery and suspense to the story but would have liked to see more depth to the characters. If you're a fan of the author or looking for a quick cute, feel-good romance, then this one fit that bill! This book has a unique premise with the Gnome theme and such an adorable dog. Those were the highlights of the book for me. I'm not a huge fan of grumpy/sunshine attraction trope but this one felt a little extreme and I wasn't a fan. The conditions of the house were very descriptive and almost made me nauseous over how much I could picture it. The author has a great way with words but sometimes when characters are written to with plots that are designed to make them make really bad choices or keep unnecessary secrets…. it becomes difficult to want to push past how irritated it makes me. I did with this book but I never fully felt like I understood the reason for these decisions. Not a huge fan of this book but it may appeal to some folks.

A Gnome Inheritance was a quick, easy read. I really like the pairing of a flighty sunshine character and a gruff-but protective character. However, I am not a fan of insta-love or another trope that developed later in the story. These plot devices may work for other readers - they just aren’t my jam! I think the characters and plot had a lot of potential, but both felt a little underdeveloped to me. We got some backstory explaining Penny and Maddox’s personalities/decision-making/past trauma, but it felt very surface level for both of them. I just wish there had been more explanation for why everything - particularly the main conflict around the house - happened.

A great read that I devoured in one sitting. Penny and Maddox are opposites and meet when she inherits the house next-door to his. There's an instant spark between them, but they try to ignore it... How long will that last?... Expect plenty of twists, mystery, danger, tension, witty banter, laughter, friendship, electric chemistry and a magnetic force, revelations and more throughout. Absolutely love a book with four legged friends too! Will Penny figure out the mystery behind the letters her aunt left along with the house?... Could Penny and Maddox actually be each others forever person?...
This was the first book I've read by the author and I'll definitely be looking out for more!!!.

This is a funny rom-com about a couple that are the exact opposite of each other.

Penny is a free spirit, who lives in an RV with a big dog, Maddox is tidy, neat and lives in an immaculate and luxurious apartment. They meet, when Penny is given a family member's old house in a will.

There are a lot of suspicious situations concerning the house, some family feuds and a lot of funny incidents. What I liked the most was the moments when Penny and Maddox were together in his house. I didn't care about the stealing affair, but I loved this couple's chemistry. There's a scene when Penny became ill and Maddox has to take care of her (I loved that part).

Overall, this was a fun and light reading.

I enjoyed the premise of this book… a woman(Penny) inherits her Aunt's house and discovers a hidden secret. She's messy and kind of a nomad and discovers her aunt was a hoarder. She meets the rich/grumpy neighbor and then chaos ensues.

I felt that a lot of the events that happened in this book were a bit far-fetched and over the top. Things didn't flow organically.

I also found the POV (not first person) hard to follow at times and some of the things the characters said just seemed totally off. There wasn't enough building of the main characters relationship and the book seemed to end abruptly. A solid 3 ☆☆☆

Perfect!

I loved this so much. There was love and tears, mystery and adventure.

I loved the way that Penny and Maddox worm their way into each other's lives through a series of bad luck.

I love how both Maddox and Gus, her Great Dane, are so fiercely protective of Penny, even though most of the time Maddox didn't know why he cared for her and found Penny's stubbornness infuriating.

I also really liked that Penny learned to let go of the past she held and move forward in a relationship with Maddox.

The mystery that's wrapped up in the romance was well done and kept me intrigued and wanting to know what happens next.

Wonderfully written and cannot wait to read more from this author.

It had some funny scenes and I appreciated Maddox's grand gesture (though Penny's actions, which motivated it, seemed to come out of left field). Descriptions of the aunt's house sufficiently squicked me out (it's been a very long time since I've used the word 'squick'). The hidden treasure part, which was pretty close to the forefront early on, seemed relegated to afterthought status at the end, but at least it was addressed with no loose ends.

An opposites attract romance with a bit of mystery and a whole lot of humor

These two were complete opposites
He was grumpy, guarded
She was sunshine and well...
a whirlwind of oops moments
But dang if she didn't make his heart go boom

This was a slow-burn romantic comedy
with light suspense and a pretty obvious who-done-it
A big adorable sidekick
A lot of back-and-forth banter
Just an overall fun read
I did walk away with unanswered questions and some of the events were a little on the far-fetched side

This was a new to me author in a standalone, HEA story with an interesting premise that grabbed my attention.
After taking an initial dislike to Maddox, I found that as time went on I really liked the insight into his thoughts and feelings about Penny. However, the same wasn’t the same for Penny. I didn’t gain any extra insight into her as time went on. The suspense part of the story played well but didn’t really give me any satisfying results. We found out the who, but not really the why.
Overall, though, I did enjoy this story and am happy to recommend it.

A Gnome Inheritance is the quirky story of an equally quirky Penny who has inherited her aunt's dilapidated cottage located in an upscale neighborhood. The last request was that she would be the one disposing of the contents. She and her adorable Great Dane show up in a vintage Airstream to get the job done. Grumpy neighbor Maddox wants to buy the property and dispose of the mess and the collection of gnomes surrounding it. The chaos that follows Penny everywhere she goes is way too much for him. A hilarious story of these two opposites working together ensues. This was an enjoyable blend of mystery, hilarity, and romance.

Currently at page 9, 6%, and haven't officially DNFed this one, but with all due respect (aka none at all), anyone who writes "Her and Maddox" as the compound subject of a sentence has earned a one-star rating.

Her and Maddox stood on either side of the old wooden picket fence that was weathered to a grayish white and bare of paint.
