There’s an attack on US soil, and Brock―an agent of the CIA―finds himself in the middle of the mess. He soon discovers that there’s been a breach that threatens not only to destroy the nation’s safety, but very possibly, Brock’s own life.
In the race against the clock, Brock tries to keep his field officer’s wife and children safe and stay alive.
In the midst of the chaos, Brock discovers one of his closest allies is a part of the dangerous intelligence breach responsible for a recent string of crimes by an extremist organization.
It’s up to Brock to either take down the organization, or find himself―and those he loves most―at their mercy.
A Fifth of the Story is the suspenseful, action-packed tale of one man's courage and resilience as he works against the clock to save the lives of his two best friends and, ultimately, the freedom he's fought for as a CIA agent during one of the US's history's darkest hours, using the backdrop of espionage, loyalty, betrayal, and the ultimate test of friendship.
Review of A Fifth of the Story by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes
A Fifth of the Story is a heart-pounding crime novel written by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes. This novel plunges readers into a world of clandestine operations, shattered trust, and the relentless pursuit of truth. It presents the characters Brock, Pang, and Shuggs, three best friends and CIA agents. These friends were celebrating their victory after a life-threatening mission, only to be ambushed in a seemingly innocuous bar. This random act sets the stage for a meticulously woven web of deceit that threatens not just national security but the core of Brock's world.
This book will keep readers constantly questioning whom to trust as the line between friend and foe blurs with each shocking revelation. It's the first thing that stood out for me in the book because it got me cracking my brain to uncover the mystery and know what's going on in the book. Sometimes it is good to get the brain to work like this while reading books, and this book did justice to that.
A fifth of the story asks profound questions about our allegiances—to our country, colleagues, and those closest to us. As I read, I began to ask myself where my loyalty lies in my country, and I realized that I'm no different from the Shuggs, who had lost faith in their country and the agency they worked with. Seeing the path that Shuggs took helps me know the right path to choose when I find myself in a similar situation. It makes it the second thing that stood out for me in the book.
One of my convictions over the years is that people change. Seeing how friends turn into foes in this book solidified my convictions. It helps toughen my heart to accept it when people switch on me. Also, it taught me that while it is good to trust people, I also need to be wary of and sensitive to people's behavior around me. It's the third thing that stood out for me.
When searching for an error-free book, A Fifth of the Story should come first. I didn't come across any spelling or grammatical errors. Additionally, on a scale of 1–5, I give this book a 5-star rating. This is because of the excellent and easy-to-understand writing style of the author.
The intricate plot, well-developed characters, and exploration of loyalty make A Fifth of the Story the best option for fans of action thrillers.
Readers! Eager for a new suspense thriller? More than a little okay with potentially losing sleep on a page-turner that’s going to keep you glued to the pages and on the edge of your seat? Then get excited! Why? Because author Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes, is here with her new thriller novel that is going to do exactly that! A Fifth of the Story is going to take you completely by surprise with how detailed and gripping this novel is going to be. You won’t be able to put this book down until you reach the final page. Then and only then will you be able to take a deep breath, relax, and reflect on the wild rollercoaster ride this author just took you on. The first thing that’s going to catch your attention about this book’s cover is the main character, Brock O’ Reilly, painted in fiery colors with a view of the capital in the background. With his agent badge dangling around his neck and a serious expression on his face, it all hints that this story? It’s going to be intense, and boy does it deliver! A Fifth of the Story starts out overseas. Brock and his team are dealing with a hostile situation. They fight over there to spare us over here. The mission is in Mali, Africa. Their task? Take out dangerous insurgents. No mission is ever straight-forward, and the author accurately details this when the team is forced to make hard decisions. These decisions, and the proof of them, will haunt them when they return back home. How so? When someone leaks mission info and pictures which puts the team’s survival in jeopardy. That sounds bad enough on it’s own, right? The team is at risk of being no more. Their very careers? On the line. But that’s just a fifth of the story. There is always more. Much more. The information leak is just the tip. Iceberg! Dead ahead! Are you ready? Brace yourself, because author Hutchinson-Hayes escalates the story with a protest that turns riot..and then shots ring out. Innocent lives are lost, while others are assassinated for the information that they may or may not know. One of the team? Down for the count. Fighting for his life. Where is this going? Well, we’re only seeing a tiny piece of the puzzle, a snippet of the overall picture. Something bigger is going on, and the mess is about to hit the fan. A Fifth of the Story starts out slowly, but don’t let that fool you. The author is simply setting the stage, familiarizing readers with a couple of the key players. Before you know it, you’re going to be slogging your way through this book trying to stay ahead of the fuse that’s been lit. You get a chapter of the characters in Africa, before they’re back home and dealing with a debriefing of the situation. Then the exposure of that things are worse than they appear. Not only did the mission not go “perfectly” for the higher-ups, it’s been leaked. We all know that war is chaos, but what the guys leave in Africa will appear tame to what Brock, especially will be facing state-side. To survive that hell over there only to come home to another level hell is a tough pill to swallow. Nothing is what it seems. Secrets are swirling all around him. What is going on? Who can he trust? One team member has been taken down. He’s fighting for his life in more ways than one. Throw in that now someone is targeting this agent’s family, and Brock is going to have more than his work cut out for him. But it just keeps going deeper! How deep is author Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes intending to take us? As deep as necessary, so take a deep breath and try not to lose your head in the process. Brock is an interesting character, and he really carries the storyline well. He utilizes his training 9 out of 10 times. There are some scenes and situations where his training backfires on him, but that’s to be expected. When you’re using your skills against someone else who’s an agent, the odds of you getting sussed out are pretty high. LOL! Even then in those moments though he doesn’t back down. Brock’s experience in hostile environments comes back to serve him overall throughout this book. He literally goes from one dicey situation to another. Along with him, you begin to wonder...is this man ever going to catch a break and be able to breathe? We can only deduce that the author’s answer to this unasked question is...no. Definitely getting a “no” vibe. LOL! You’ll quickly see why. Of course, you won’t hear us complaining! Nope! Not at all! The drama and the intensity with which the storyline moves is going to keep you glued to the pages. This book insane with how it grabs you by the eyeballs and never lets up. The question of “What is going to happen next?!” will dog you all the way through. Hey. You’ve been warned. So don’t be surprised when you are hard-pressed to put this book down and do anything else of importance. A Fifth of the story is going to shine a light on racial issues and the drama that they play in politics. This is going to be true for both sides of the issue, so keep that in mind before you decide to “pass” on reading this book. These issues are a focus of the story, but don’t dominate it to the point that readers who enjoy suspense thrillers won’t want to read it. The way this book is written works together to shine a light on how twisted all of this is. A Fifth of the Story excels in the overall details. The author takes time to educate readers on certain terminologies that are used in this book so that we’re not left in the dark. There are some elements that the author will leave us in the dark with, but that’s only so that the reveal can be more jaw-dropping. Now, if only the character descriptions had been as detailed this book would be just about perfect. The way that this book is laid out the author wants readers to piece together who the “leak” in the agency is. Initially, it will simply be an educated guess, however, as the story progresses, the “guess” will become solidified. The question will become instead – “Why doesn’t Brock piece it together himself?” We think we have a theory on this one. Shooting for realism. We tend to turn a blind eye to those closest to us, and so it makes sense that Brock would be willing to do the same. For a time that is. A Fifth of the Story is one of those books that is like a bag of your favorite potato chips. Once you start...you just can’t stop. Before you know it, you look up and hours, not minutes have passed. The book is almost finished, and you’re gasping for air. The final chapters of this book are going to steal your focus as you race to find out who will come out of this alive. This is just the beginning of Brock’s story. Author Hutchinson-Hayes is already working on the next to follow, so it will be interesting to see where things go from here. A Fifth of the Story is a gripping novel that makes it a must read for all who enjoy suspenseful novels packed with drama. This book is a wild ride of trying to decipher who you can trust (despite being told frequently “trust no one”) and a fight for survival. Nothing is ever what it seems. So, if you’re ready to forget about your responsibilities or have a sleepless night then this is the book for you!
Pros:

Intense, gripping, and filled with suspense, this book delivers an adrenaline-fueled narrative that keeps readers wondering what will happen next until the conclusion. From the very first page, the story is filled with action that will leave readers breathless. The author leaves no stone unturned in delivering pulse-pounding action sequences. The action is not just for the sake of excitement, but it also serves to drive the plot forward. The attention to detail in the vivid action scenes is quite remarkable. I was transported into the heart of the action. It felt like I was going along with Brock on his dangerous escapades.
The novel grips readers with its intense suspense. The tension builds as Brock navigates through a series of deadly encounters. The plot twists are another wonderful aspect of this book. The author throws in unexpected turns that leave readers questioning everything. We are kept at the edge of our seats, constantly guessing the true nature of the plot. There is absolutely nothing to dislike. There are no errors, showing the exceptional editing carried out. This is a wonderful book, and it deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. This action-packed novel takes readers on a rollercoaster ride through a web of deceit, betrayal, and high-stakes missions, making it a must-read for fans of action novels.
Who can Brock trust as his world begins to unravel? In the high-stakes world of global espionage, nothing is what it seems. This gritty and reality-laden action novel confronts real issues even closer to home.
Themes of family, friendship, loyalty, deception, unity, and racism form a Gordian knot of intrigue and thrills.
Following an attack on US soil, CIA Agent Brock lands in the middle of the turmoil. The security breach that threatens the nation’s safety could also cost Brock his life.
The pace never lets up from scene to scene, as Brock protects the lives of his friend’s wife and children while attempting to solve the case.
Everything Brock relies on comes undone when it is revealed his closest ally is involved in the intelligence breakdown. And behind him, an extremist organization ripped from current headlines.
One of the US's darkest hours in history serves as the backdrop for this ultimate test of friendship.
Many people present one persona in the streets while living a shadow life behind closed doors. When the lies begin to unravel, there’s no end to the lengths evil men go to maintain their grip on power and public perception.
Every page of this fast-paced action suspense novel paints scenes readers can see. Every decision is visceral, and the consequences of actions feel real. The clear writing makes the story both immersive and compelling.
Get used to taking one step forward, and two steps back with every solution Brock discovers. Characters cascade and tumble through a series of dire circumstances on their way to solving the over-arcing case. Most readers won’t see the author’s intended ending until it is barreling down on them.
Rearing its ugly head is the fight against white supremacy, which underscores every confrontation and major story arc. However, the topic does not overwhelm the story with political ideology. Handled with truth and bravery, it is certain Dr. Katherine understands this real threat to America and is ready to confront it head-on.
The novel reads almost like a Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne novel. This time, however, the main character confronts real-life issues that could have grave consequences for our country. Rather than incredibly over-the-top stylized villains with Hollywood arsenals, Hutchinson-Hayes develops characters who could be our own friends and neighbors.
When the next novel drops, this reader wants to read the follow-up action-packed adventure featuring Brock and the team taking on another real and present danger!
This is the author’s first novel, and it read like one. It’s entertaining confirming the endorsers comments. There’s lots of action and danger is never far away for our hero, Brock O’Reilly. Great name for a series hero, BTW.
The action is relentless, but I never felt the tension that makes me care and keeps me on the edge of my seat. Why? I think I didn’t connect sufficiently with Brock and the Pang family he attempts to keep safe to ‘feel’ the danger. Further, the way the action built and is described didn’t build that tension. A more experienced author would have grabbed we readers by the throat and had us gasping for breath repeatedly throughout the story.
The other challenge was not ever understanding Brock’s purpose, that is, I didn’t feel I understood the novel’s premise because I didn’t know who the antagonists were. Brock was in a fight for survival and neither he, nor we, knew who he was fighting. This added to my lack of care about the story’s outcome.
It all gets summed up in the last two chapters when we’re told who the bad guys are. Most of it made sense but delivering it all at the end denies the reader an opportunity to discover the antagonist’s purpose through the story.
I also found it a little unbelievable that a hotel could be so repeatedly attacked in a few hours without the real SWAT team coming to the rescue. So there was a believability issue there for me too.
The story has a lot of strong elements to it that a more experienced author, and/or strong editor/ Beta readers may have helped shape into a more compelling story.
In saying that, the way it ends, we know where Book two is heading and already I’m interested in reading it because I understand its premise and the odds Brock O’Reilly is up against.
This was an adrenaline-fueled story that immediately became a hit espionage thriller. The atmosphere and character development in this story really captured the fun and thrill of the recent Netflix series The Night Agent, hitting on the tension buildup between the characters and the intense action scenes that highlight the threat the protagonist faces.
This novel did an extraordinary job of utilizing imagery to create an almost cinematic reading experience that brought the reader into this action-packed thriller. Yet the tense atmosphere as the protagonist struggled to find a way of protecting those closest to him and the nation he loves, as well as the mystery behind those involved in this conspiracy, made this story shine bright.
The Verdict
Memorable, intense, and entertaining author Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes’s “A Fifth of the Story” is a must-read action and espionage thriller that readers will love getting lost in. The twists and turns the story takes and the protagonist’s story of resilience and hope in the face of adversity make this a gripping tale.
You don't want to miss this masterpiece of thrilling fiction by author Dr Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes. Her superb writing mastery of this genre amazed me. Wow is not a big enough exclamation.
Fabulous, immersive, sensory fiction that makes you feel you are pulled into the story. The writing is engaging and jerks readers into the flow of action in chapter 1 and then rips at your heart with the vivid post traumatic point of view and experience of the main character attempting to comprehend what he had witnessed and the ramifications of his actions. I won’t share more, but this writer knows how to realistically convey emotions, settings, and visceral experiences as masterfully as I’ve ever read.
I stopped reading after the first chapters in order to purchase a screen reader because my vision wouldn’t allow me to keep reading.
You won’t want to put this book down either! Get your copy today but don’t forget to turn on the lights and leave 8 hours uninterrupted to immerse yourself in this story.
Add this author to your favorites. And add “A Fifth of the Story” to your next thriller or suspense list of books to read.
A Fifth of the Story by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes is an excellent crime fiction novel. It reminds me so much of the movies by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Slyvester Stallone, and John Wayne. There is always a big group of people these characters like the one in this novel must fight against and come out of it alive. The themes from this book are also similar to the ones found by the movies with these famous actors. I wonder which actor would play Brock well. I haven't decided yet, but he is an unforgettable character. His journey is one hell of a ride from the beginning to end. Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes writes scenes that are so detailed I feel as if I am watching a movie. I can almost feel, see, and sense everything Brock does. The characterization is also done well. If you love books that feature against all odds, good versus evil, and tough male heroes than this is a must read! I absolutely loved it! Danger and excitement on every page!
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
"A Fifth of the Story" is an action-packed crime novel by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes that's full of suspense, adrenaline, and espionage, mixed in with themes of friendship and betrayal.
Even though I don't know much about how the CIA operates, the author does an amazing job of pulling readers into an adrenaline-filled world. The book really delivers on its promise of thrills while keeping you hooked with its plot and introducing characters who feel just right. What makes this book special is its fast pace and the depth of its characters. Brock isn't just a skilled operative; he's also a guy with his own vulnerabilities and relationships that he's got to protect no matter what.
The author's attention to detail and knowledge of espionage make the story feel so real. Each twist and turn keeps you on the edge, and you just can't stop turning the pages.
Overall, it's like a wild rollercoaster of suspense that will leave you breathless. Whether you're into thrillers or just want a gripping read, this book won't disappoint.
“A Fifth of the Story” by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes is a gripping CIA thriller that keeps readers hooked from start to finish. The story follows Brock O’Reilly, a dedicated CIA agent who has worked tirelessly alongside his two best friends to rise through the ranks. But upon returning from a major mission, Brock’s loyalty and friendships are put to the ultimate test.
As the plot unfolds, Brock uncovers a dangerous infiltration by a white supremacist organization. The security breach not only endangers national safety but also places Brock’s own life on the line. Determined to survive and protect his loved ones, he pushes forward despite the deadly stakes.
Fans of fast-paced, suspense-filled thrillers will find this book hard to put down. The narrative keeps readers on edge, with blurred lines between friend and foe making trust nearly impossible. Dr. Hutchinson-Hayes’s sharp attention to detail and deep understanding of espionage lend authenticity to the story, while the constant twists and turns heighten the tension and excitement.
Wow! This was an intense read, but I really liked it. I'll admit, I'm not normally a suspense, thriller reader but this book caught my attention from the first page. It's the story of Brock, a CIA special agent who finds himself back on home soil (in the USA) facing danger, ethical decisions, haunting memories and betrayal of the cruelest kind. While the fast pace and tension of the plot was enough to keep me reading, what I loved was Hutchinson-Haye's reflections on race, hatred and friendship. As Brock tries to unravel the events around him, as he witnesses some of his most loved people in increasing danger and puts his life (and faith) on the line to protect them, he is also facing trauma from his past and deciding the man he wants to be. This book had me guessing to the end, hoping what I suspected wasn't true but satisfied with the ending too. Worth a read. (And can I just add, I loved the child characters in this novel. They added a sensitive depth to the story.)
I read this book in three sittings. Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes did an excellent job at making it impossible to stop at the end of the chapter!! Thrillers is one of my favorite genres and I was hooked. Not one minute of lag time from the beginning to the end. I can't wait to hear when the sequel comes out. Loved the characters, even those who seemed potentially evil. Every time I thought I knew the bad guy, there was another one making me question myself. A Fifth of the Story took me into the job of a CIA agent, behind the scenes into “deep undercover,” and into the lives of people I came to care for. What really got me was how relevant the book is regarding America today and so many situations we’ve experienced since the pandemic. This is a true-to-life thriller. Trust me, you can’t put it down!
This debut book from Katherine Hutchison-Hayes is a page-turning thriller surrounding a small group of CIA operatives trapped in a domestic terrorism situation. Main character, Brock O’Reilly, is the focus as he has to not only save himself, but somehow get his friends and adopted family to safety as well. The plot is well thought out and the setting this author paints comes to life in a believable way. With the story taking place over a short period under an intense circumstance, the characters are written as such which brings forth an edge-of-your-seat read, but the author also weaves in enough backstory to deliver an emotional tie with each one. Kudos to this author’s debut novel. She’ll be one to watch.
A Fifth of the Story is an easy-to-read, action-packed book. Reading it was like watching an action movie, with gun fights, fires, and bombs, along with great dialogue that progressed the story and the characters’ relationships.
The one negative aspect of the book was how blind the main character was, despite being a CIA agent, to what was happening. I kept yelling at him to smarten up.
The reasoning behind the attack that takes centre stage in the book reflects the unfortunate reality of our society. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes does an amazing job showing the differences in ideology that created the situation, making the book’s relevance to today’s landscape even more compelling.
If you like action-packed stories, this is one for you.
I will admit that this is not my usual genre but it may be going forward. I really enjoyed this book! So much so, that I read it in 24 hours. I do not know the last time I did that with a book. I could not put it down.
It hooks you from the beginning. I remember thinking this is a weird start but then I couldn't even put it down because I wanted to know what would happen next.
She is very good at weaving subtle clues throughout if you pay enough attention but I was always second-guessing my thoughts so I had to keep reading to make sure I knew if I was right or wrong. :) Highly, highly recommend. I will be looking for other books from this author!
Unrelenting heart-stopping action from the opening scene to the last line.
They left a war overseas and came home to a war like no other. Federal agents face a crisis of conscience between ethics and emotion, love and loyalty to the brotherhood versus performing their duty. A probing story of bonds and betrayal, cultural conflict and corruption, a glimpse into the inner workings of federal agencies, and the toll on those sworn to protect. Racist plots, crime rings, gun battles, bombs, politics, faith, and intrigue converge to create unrelenting heart-stopping action from the opening scene to the last line.
Admittedly, thrillers are not the first books or movies I will choose to read or watch, but "A Fifth of the Story" grabbed my attention from the get-go and held it till the end. Katherine creates three-dimensional and believable characters you love and root for or despise. Tensions build as the lead character's loyalty and dedication to his friends and country are tested after an intelligence breach. The scenarios are believable and exciting. This is a modern-day suspense thriller, much like other suspense novelists we love to read. I highly recommend it, even for those readers who don't usually read suspense. I grew to love this book and Katherine's style of writing.
A Fifth of the Story is a work of art. Dr. Katherine Hutchinson Hayes draws you in slowly. She weaves a suspense-filled thriller. It starts with an attack on American agents abroad and continues with an additional attack on American soil. The protagonist, Brock O'Reilly is in a race against time to find out who is behind the attacks, as well as stop future attacks; while trying to evade a network of trained assassins. I was taken on a wild ride and loved every minute of it. I found the book to have complex characters with moral struggles. I appreciated that the storyline was not predictable. It was not until the very end of the book that I was able to figure out who the true villain was. I highly recommend this book. If you enjoy thrillers, spies, and who done-its, this book is for you. The author will keep you guessing until the very end.
I have seen a lot of good reviews about this book...but I just cannot get into it. I don't like the main characters I don't like the plot I don't like the bad language that already appears in this "Christian" book. (Hell and bastard so far).
I started the book 10 days ago, and got to page 86, and cannot waste any more time trying to get into a book that I just can't like. Waste of my money.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I'm a Law and Order, NCIS, and Cold Case Files junkie. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out storylines and who-done-its. This book had me continually second-guessing myself, and I wound up being wrong on almost every point. I loved it, especially the fact the author set herself up for a sequel or series.
A Fifth of the Story is an action-packed thriller that feels like it came straight from today’s headlines. With a strong hero you’ll want to cheer for, this page turner will keep your nerves taught and your brain enthralled as you race to finish this exciting story of good versus evil. If you’re looking for the perfect escape, this book is it!
Heart pounding non-stop action as CIA agents come under attack on American soil. This authors first novel is gripping & exciting. I bought it on the recommendation of an author I admire. Besides some inconsistencies & the fact I figured out ( pretty early on) the evil mastermind & agency leak behind the craziness I enjoyed the novel.
Katherine's excellent writing and real-world CIA knowledge make every page enjoyable and believable. She takes us into the world of a CIA operative who wrestles with vital issues. Hang on. It's a thrilling thriller.
A good read. This thriller suspense is fast-paced, non-stop action. Conflict weaves in and out of situations, as the main character, Brock, perseveres through the terror. Holding on to his allegiance and loyalty for the people he cares for. Loyalty that could be his undoing.
Powerful, breathtaking, heart pounding, action-filled, suspense story that caught me from the beginning. I had to keep reading and find out what happened next.
In our time, the North Americas have not lived through war on our land. We've sent our men and women to fight war elsewhere, and yes, we had 9/11, in addition to the violence of our own making, like the Oklahoma bombing, Columbine, Sandy Hook, etc. And so, when soldiers return home after deployment, they don't expect to have to deal with issues like what they've seen in the Middle East. This is the core of this story. The what if coming true for characters like Brock and his men.
Brock and his team come home for a time of rest after a challenging assignment in the Middle East and face a harsh enemy who slowly takes out his team. Those remaining are released--burned by the CIA. Brock though is given a lateral position in the FBI, one he doesn't want. One that isn't to the level he had in the CIA. But when the enemy kills his best friend then threatens the friend's family, Brock disregards rules and fights back with all his strength to save them.
The things I didn't like: I didn't like the swearing. Do real life people say these things, yes. But have great books portrayed the same situations without the swearing and fully conveyed the emotion? Aboslutely. Since this is Christian Fiction, I would have like to see the author make attempts to write the scene without the swearing.
It is all to easy to call up characters in other books and movies and compare a character to them. Similar characters to Brock don't stop to vomit when seeing a dead body. He is sick in this way more than once. While this may have been to convey his compassion for lives, he does convey it with his tenderness and drive to save Pang's MIL, his ex, and the two boys. It seemed such a potentially strong hero could lapse into such a weak character.
Nonetheless, Hutchinson-Hayes has crafted a fast-paced thriller with a purpose. To remind us evil can and will visit our homeland too.
