Monsters of The Divide #1

Paine for the Holidays

Rate this book
Every day the monsters come through The Divide. For exactly six hours they have free rein before they're pulled back to their realm. For six hours every day, it's hell on earth.

So make sure the correct symbols are carved deep into your threshold and every windowsill. Make sure you recharge them with a few drops of your blood at least once a month to keep the monsters out.

And whatever you do, don’t go outside past curfew.

Mira

I know better than to go out so close to curfew, and now I’m going to pay the price. I’m going to die, all because of a stupid glass unicorn.

Paine

There’s a human outside of their protective barrier. Her fear is delicious. I’ve warned the other monsters - this one is mine to hunt, Mine to devour.

MINE!

T. B. Wiese is a military spouse, dog mom, photographer, Disney nerd, and lover of spicy fantasy. She loves animals (She grew up with dogs and working with horses, including working at the Tri-Circle D Ranch at Disney World), so don’t be surprised when you find yourself reading lovable animal characters in her novels.

She has loved reading since she was little, and her tbr list is embarrassingly long, but she’s always looking to add more, so if you have a spicy fantasy recommendation, pass it along.

Short.
Sweet.
Love that Mira was 38.

Hated that logically, there were no nosy neighbours. Coz if everyone is meant to be indoors but you are constantly at your stoop having dates with a monster, best believe there is a neighbour somewhere watching or listening.

The book spends most of the time on their relationship build up than the smut. An epilogue would have been great.

This novella was really cute and exactly what I needed to get into some holiday spirit. I really enjoyed it and would love to see more stories written in this world so we get more of it.

The premise is interesting, the characters are cute, I loved it.

Possessive Monster ✔️
Swoon Worthy Romance ✔️

I'm almost tearing up because I'm so happy I found this book but also so sad that I read it so fast and it's over. There's viscous monsters, interesting magic, adorable romantic meetings between the FMC and MMC, hand holding, and a HOT spicy scene that is totally worth the wait until the end of the book.

I can't wait to read Vex's story next. And very happy we have even more coming after that!

This book had me giggling like a schoolgirl!

I have owned this book for a year now. I'm embarrassed to say I just now read it, as part of my Christmas TBR.

The wait was well worth it! Weird, as I'm not well versed in monster romance. But I like weird. So it worked for me! Fated mates, just in time for the holidays was perfection!

I know I'll be reading T. B. Weise's other books, for sure!

I recommend this to people who are willing to think outside the box, who like spicy paranormal and fantasy books.

Paine. Paine. Paine.

The perfect kind of monster: vicious all around except around his mate where he turns into a lovesick fool.

This was such an awesome holiday read where I found myself giggling and kicking feet at the sweet interactions between Mira and Paine. And his terms of endearment for her: ‘little joy’, ‘sweet desire’ … I am biting my fist, please!

I cannot wait for more in that universe~

Christmas and monsters and mating, oh my! This was such a fun, dark holiday read. Monsters visit the human realm to feast and hunt… until one monster finds a woman that cannot be his meal and is so much more. This was definitely a quick read and I can’t wait to jump into the next story.

This was an interesting concept that I wish was an actually novel as opposed to a short novella. I really wanted to learn more about the monsters and why they only have 6 hours to roam free.

*massive spoilers ahead*

Mira and Paine were alright characters. There’s nothing special about them to me. Paine became very possessive when he realized that Mira was his mate and Mira was perfectly fine with it, even though he practically tried to kill her when they first met.

Overall, this was okay. I think I’d rate it a 2.5.

This series are standalone novellas with HEAs for main couples! However, there are little easter eggs and previous characters popping up. You can read out of order, but it may be more enjoyable to read in order. I read them out of order so when I read this installment, I giggled a little when I found the easter egg!

"Here’s to a big wingspan." - Book dedication

Monsters are real and their only intentions with humans are food or playthings. Not in a good way. . . The Divide allows monsters to come to the human realm for six hours every night and if you're caught outside when the monsters come. Well, you better have written up a will!

Mira knows all the rules, the warning sirens, and to be inside at night. But she had to get a stupid glass unicorn and now she's going to pay more than money for it! How could she have been so foolish?! She should have held off buying the gift until the next day, in DAYLIGHT! A monster has targeted her as his and she's praying to every god and goddess out there that she will make it home or it will be quick! Only something transpires between the two that neither were ready for. . . Dun dun duuun!

"It’s rude to play with your food. Just kill me, or eat me, or whatever it is you’re going to do.”- Mira

So, I'm glad I went back and read the first book, I mean it's a novella and sometimes you need short little reads! I also really like Wiese's writing style and I love monster romances! I love how each book is centered around a holiday or holidays in the case of this book. This installment is fun because we go from dinner-to cautious friends-to lovers!

Paine decides tonight he's going to go into the human realm and finds his prey pretty quickly. Only when he catches her and tastes her blood everything changes in the manner of one gulp! Our monster who is feared by other monsters turns into a big, protective, puppy dog as he tries to sort out his feelings. Realizing Mira may be more than just a quick bite to eat. . .

"A knocking. It’s past curfew, so the only ones out right now are … monsters. But monsters don’t knock." - Mira

If you liked "Beauty and the Beast" then you will love this novella! We get that vibe as the two slowly start trying to understand one another. There's a level of intimacy I really admired as I read through the book. Both having issues focusing on anything but each other. I love the comedy the author installs with the whole "he's a monster I should fear him and hate him, but he's HOT. . .". Mira repeating to herself constantly that she was this beast's dinner, yet something shifted.

So, with this installment you will be groaning in frustration and screaming no! Author knowing exactly what she was doing with the sexual tension and the teasing. You will feel like you're being withheld from the big O. Both MCs feeling it as well! We do get MF action in this book but the buildup until then is ugh! Paine has some fun features that Mira doesn't miss out on. (Forked tongue, horns, and some tail play!) I loved the romance that was forming between the two and how they went about getting to understand one another.

With this read there's language, violence, and gore. The fear of being outside when monsters are out, the anxiety and desperation. I liked that Mira didn't instantly fall into Paine's arms and he realized he would have to be patient with things and not rush. Dual POVs help to showcase just how much the two have to work through and how they affect one another. There's no pregnancy trope and I love how Paine's anatomy works in that regard. Blood drinking and biting.

The author gives a recap about The Divide and what you need to do to protect yourself. We also get fun descriptions of the different types of monsters. I really admired how Wiese broke down the descriptions in ways that were very easy to understand. Paine being a combination of a vampire and gargoyle with just a bit more! Liked the diversity of the monsters and how not all are just programmed to follow their base, primal instincts.

The main couple get a very good HEA! I cannot wait for more of this series and to see which monster is up next and what will happen! I wonder how Halloween will go for whichever characters are up when that holiday comes. Halloween being my favorite holiday!

Enjoy the novella under two hundred pages with a monster x human romance! Don't forget to give the author some stars!

The humans do speak of soul mates, but very few actually believe in the concept. They write of it in their books, thinking such a fated coupling is only a thing of fiction.

3.75

I just love T. B. Wiese. She has about 8 books out, and I have read 7 of them till now and have never been disappointed. She writes in the romantic fantasy genre, but her books, and I have said this before, always have a perfect blend of plot and romance plus spice.

This book is a 150-page novella, that introduces us to a world while following two characters falling for each other with a little spice at the end.

Plot, World-Building and Writing: Written in first person and from a dual POV, it is neither fast-paced nor slow. The writing flows beautifully throughout the story. It is based around Christmas, which I found very interesting as it brought out new emotions in the male main character.

The introduction to this monster-human world blend is perfectly done. I loved the author's take on the monster world and its creatures. The world is more animalistic in nature than I anticipated. Generally, I have always found monsters of this genre to have a more human-like nature with monster-like abilities, whereas here I found the monsters plus our main character acting more like monsters and have their abilities. I loved this new take on them.

"Hold on, little joy."

Romance:
Since this is a short book, the romance between the characters developed a bit instantly, but we do get a few moments of hesitation from the female main character. I'd like to see their romance grow, if it becomes a part of a series.

Recommended: Overall, I just loved this novella, and if anyone is looking for a short monster romance with spice, this one is a nice place to start.

I received an ARC of the book for my honest review

Well this managed to be both surprisingly violent and surprisingly sweet.

The first thing that surprised me when I picked this up (largely based on the cover, not going to lie) was the detailed description of all the different monsters in the book. To be honest it was a bit intimidating, and if you start reading this and also find it intimidating I'm pretty confident you can just skip over those pages and keep reading and the story will still work just fine. Come back to it at the end though because Wiese has put in the work on world building here - I was impressed and am really interested in where it is going next.

The next thing that surprised me was the tentativeness of the relationship. This story had you working up to fingers touching and it was so sweet! While I'm not sure what Mira saw initially in Paine, it was so sweet (and refreshing) watching them slowly build up to a relationship. For people looking for monster smut, it does heat up substantially at the end, but most of this book (for good reasons!) slight touches is where its at.

Lastly, I loved that Paine was uncompromising in his violence throughout the book. Finding his mate changes nothing about him - he's still a vicious killer, he just also happened to be in love. The story isn't gory, but it still felt gorier than I was expecting, if that makes sense?

Very interested to see what comes next!

𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 – 𝘔𝘺 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘛.𝘉. 𝘞𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥! 🎄🩸

Monsters crossing into the human realm for six hours a day? Normal.
A strict curfew where if you’re outside—you’re dead? Also normal.
Mira accidentally getting stuck outside on Christmas Eve? Oh no.

But then… enters Paine. A Dremar (think vampire but make it wings, horns, a tail, and totally BUFF), and this monster is not about to let anything happen to his mate.

This short 133-page read was action-packed with fated mates, monsters ripping each other apart, and a whole lot of broody monster feels. Was the spice low? Yeah, but honestly, I didn’t even mind—because the story still hit.

Bonus? This is book 1 of 4, with each book set around a different holiday and a different monster. SIGN. ME. UP. Let’s go! 🔥

For six hours every night Monsters come through the Divide. Anyone caught outside becomes prey. The only safety is marking all your doors and windows with blood runes to keep them out. When Mira finds herself out after dark, all for a unicorn figure for her sister, she knows it's the end. Paine flew through the divide drawn to the scent of Mira’s fear and blood. And he cannot wait to taste her.

A quick yet action packed novella. The writing really draws you into the story. Both Mira and Paine were adorable. Yes I know he’s a big scary demon but he tried so hard to win her over. Again, adorable. I feel like there was definitely enough of a foundation to make this a full novel. But I enjoyed the story we got. Can’t wait for the next one.

First, let me say, I have read this book three times already! I loved this world and learning about the Divide that only allows monsters into our world temporarily, but it repeats each day. The dual POV is great! I fell in the with the MCs instantly! While is does occur during the winter holidays, there isn't a ton of typical holiday festivities. I found this refreshing among the other Christmas romance books out there. I love that it focuses on the development of the couple and the gifts they get each other.
As with any T.B. Wiese Book, the spice is sooo hot. 🔥🥵🌶
I definitely recommend adding this to your TBR!

This is a quick fast paced steamy monster romance.

Mira is a human who has to live in a world that during the nights monsters. During the night the monster are out putting the humans at risk. It's on one of those nights she didn't make it to her home and meets Paine one of the monsters who's crossed into the human world.

I like the sweet romance between Mira and Paine it just works so well. I love a steamy monster romance and this quick story delivers just that. I'm looking forward to reading more stories by the author as I loved this one so much.

Smutty romance novellas are pretty much just erotica with enough of a vague plot to make the smut make sense. They're short stories that revolve around boinking.

So it stands to reason that the most important part of a smutty novella is the smut. Too bad it's terribly written.

The story around it is pretty meh, but it's understandable. The plotline of novellas doesn't need to be Shakespeare. If the smut is good that's all you need.

Unfortunately this book has neither. Two stars because it's not completely abominable, but it sure isn't good either.

This was a really adorable Christmas novella. My only complaint is a few logic issues with some scenes. The intro, specifically, had a very glaring logic issue. I liked that the main character was in her later thirties. You just don't see that often. Paine was so sweet to Mira! I loved how he patiently won her over. I would love to know more about why the Divide opens every night. Also, how is a monster mated with a human? I'm so curious! Thanks for a delightful Christmas read, T.B. Wiese!😊

Monsters are....hot?

This is my first book by this author and I will be coming back for more.
I enjoyed the storyline and the pacing. While I do have a few questions about the fmcs background, I wasn't too disappointed about not knowing it by the end of the story. This is a standalone but im hoping we will get to learn more about these 2 characters in the next book Im excited to learn a bit more about vex in the next story.

4/5 a solid four ⭐️
This book was supposed to be a short treat but I found myself disappointed it didn’t last longer. It could have easily been 70/80 pages longer, with more explanations on the world, the Divide, a bit more depth in the relation between Mira and Paine which for me was a little bit too rushed.
In overall I very much enjoyed it, but I couldn’t say the length satisfied my curiosity. So I hope book 2 will give us more clues !

Surprisingly sweet and just enough spice

While it probably isn't destined to become a great classic, this story was definitely way more sweet and lovable than I expected. A bit of a slow burn, with the heavy spice coming in just the last quarter or so of the book, but the relationship between the two MCs was surprisingly sweet and drew me in. A short, delightful little nibble of Monster Romance for Christmas.

he's so cute honestly.
this was kind of silly for me, I can't say it's a work of high brow literature, but it was fun and easy, which was what i needed. good pallet cleanser and surprisingly slow burn for such a short novella.
The FMC was funny and the MMC was so sweet for a scary monster. I liked the creativity in the different kinds of monsters and the overall world in which they exist with the humans. it had a lot more backstory/lore than i expected for a novella as well.

A human/monster story where staying out after dark means death and monsters are only allowed into the human realm for six hours a day. This had a lot of potential, but the execution fell flat for me. The romance was rushed, the worldbuilding felt underdeveloped, and I never fully cared for the connection between the characters. Overall, it was just… meh. Not bad, not memorable, and not worth overthinking.

Another great read by TB Wiese. This novella is packed with action, scary monsters, a lot of heart, and some demon spicy time!

Her writing is superb! She catches your attention and holds it until the very end. Her characters are amazing. You can’t help but fall in love with them. Besides who doesn’t love a demon with a huge wingspan.

This one was a total impulse read. I saw it on TikTok and went for it the same day because why not. It was quick, exciting, and fun. It wasn’t nearly as spicy as I had expected and was looking for but it was pretty cute. The monster had quite the sweet side and I quickly fell for that too. I did feel that the descriptions of the monsters at the start of the book were unnecessary (aside from the one for the MC) and made me feel like the story would be more complicated than it actually was but that’s easily skipped. I’ll be continuing with this series whenever the next one releases and I just want a little dopamine hit of cuteness.

enjoyable and unique monster romance novella

This novella was well done and quite enjoyable. Definitely start with this one if you are going to read the series! The monster realm sounds vicious! However, Paine is definitely a product of his environment and watching him soften for Mira was lovely.
