Life in Little Leyton is never quiet, and when handsome developer Max and his bride-to-be Ellie, receive some sad news, he decides to whisk her away for a romantic break. The time away gives Ellie a new perspective, and she’s eager to get home to get on with planning their wedding. But a devastating incident at the pub she runs, The Dog & Duck, puts everything in jeopardy. And, at their home Braithwaite Manor, tensions are heightened when Ellie’s future mother-in-law turns up with all her worldly belongings, much to Max’s sister Katy’s despair. With Max preoccupied with problems at work, Ellie’s left literally holding the baby, while dealing with a seemingly endless list of dramas. And as Christmas approaches, Ellie begins to wonder if she’ll ever get her happily ever after…

5☆ A Heartwarming Must Read with plenty of Winter Sparkle!
HAPPILY EVER AFTER AT THE DOG AND DUCK is an amazing warm, Feel Good, page turner. This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone as Jill explains the backstories as you read along. But I highly recommend reading them all in order you won't be disappointed!!
So I'm a huge fan of the Dog and Duck Series, so I was thrilled to be able to read this latest instalment, and wow so much has happened. But it was like I had never been away!
All the fantastic characters are there, the storyline is just as warm, compelling, poignant and enchanting. Everything you come to love from Jill's writing. She literally makes the story come to life. It's like I'm living the story alongside the Characters.
The pace just flows so easily, before I knew it time had whizzed by and it was 5am!
I am not going to discuss the plot as I don't want to risk giving spoilers especially if you are new to the series. But what I will say is there is plenty of surprises, a few twists, maybe some new arrivals, a fire, and definitely plenty of winter sparkle, and a potential Christmas Wedding.
HAPPILY EVER AFTER AT THE DOG AND DUCK is a heart warming story, filled with loveable characters, humour, romance, emotion, friendship, family drama, mishaps & a lil mayhem. The perfect cosy winter read. I highly recommend this gorgeous page turner and the whole series!
Thank you to Aria Fiction for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily. Goodreads
If you’ve been following the ‘Dog & Duck’ series since the beginning, you’ll be well aware of the issues Little Leyton has had to face. Don’t panic if you’re new to the series though – I would highly recommend reading the books in order so that you can fully appreciate each book, even though the author does a grand job of writing them as standalone. Can ‘The Dog and Duck’ really have the happily ever after it deserves?
I was not mentally prepared for this series to end AT ALL. I wanted to start the book yet I knew that when I did, I would be closer to the series ending than ever before. Sniff. I have been with this series since the first book and I cannot believe how much the main character, Ellie, has grown since she first stepped foot in Little Leyton. I feel as though I have come to know all of the characters individually, becoming part of the village myself.
I am well aware that all good things must come to an end, but with such wonderful characters as Max, Ellie and all the folks in Little Leyton, I would be more than happy to continue following their journey for a very long time.
Once again Ellie is faced with enough stresses to make her hair go grey. Not only is she keeping something from her parents, she also ends up slap bang in the middle of the drama between her boyfriends mother and sister. Families eh, who’d have them? Even so, that isn’t all. The village of Little Leyton have their world knocked when a focal point of the village becomes an uncertainty, highlighting the fact that nobody knows what is around the corner. Money may be on their side, but time and weather clearly aren’t.
I couldn’t help wishing for Ellie to be cut some slack. I mean, how much rubbish can one person take? Yes, she is an incredibly strong character, and yes she has a very good support network, but even so, sometimes even the strongest people need a moment to let the tears fall.
Jill Steeples’ ‘Dog and Duck’ series has got to be one of my all-time serials I have ever read. There is just something so warming about all of the characters and situations within the book, that it never seemed to matter whether the sun shined or the rain fell, as long as the villagers had each other. I am so honoured to have been part of the characters journey indirectly by reading each book. It has been an absolute pleasure and, even though I am utterly devastated that the series has come to an end, I cannot fault ‘Happily Ever After at the Dog and Duck’ at all. What a perfect end to a perfect series.
What a finale, seriously. I smiled. I laughed. My eyes leaked. And my soul felt complete. This book warmed me up quicker than a hot water bottle, quicker than a winter duvet on a cold night, and even quicker than a shower on the highest setting. If you’ve ever read a book where you end up feeling calm and serene as though all of the puzzle pieces slotted into place, you’ll understand my feelings where this book is concerned because I felt exactly that.
A truly beautifully written, outstanding, humbling, addictive, cosy and heartwarming novel which made me feel as though I was part of Little Leyton and loved by everyone in it. Jill Steeples has done all of her characters proud throughout the series, but most importantly she has definitely done her readers proud by writing such a perfect ending to a perfect series.
‘The Dog and Duck’, it has been a pleasure. Jill Steeples, I have everything crossed that a new series will be coming soon as, after reading the final installment of this series, i have even more proof as to why you are one of my all time favourite authors.
Well I am so pleased that I finally got around to reading this 4 part series, as it's been thoroughly delightful and entertaining from start to finish. I do highly recommend that the series be read in order so as to get the full benefit of the storyline and the full ins and outs of all of the characters.
Just like the previous 3 books, I really did enjoy this, loved being reaquainted with the characters and the dogs again, seeing how they are all doing. I always love it when pets are featured in the stories, as it just gives it that something a little bit extra not to mention lots of aaah how adorable.
Anyway I can safely say that I'm going to miss all of the characters and their dogs, some more than others. I really do feel like I've got to know them all so very well. I was almost sad to see the series come to an end.
I'm very much looking forward to reading more books by this author now though.
It wouldn’t be a visit to Little Leyton if the challenges and moments weren’t piled together one after another. From her childhood wish of a busy, fun-filled, family filled home now all too true, Ellie and Max have been busy with the pub, family, little Noel and the always outrageously exuberant Flora it’s been a few months for them. Katy is more settled, Arthur has fitted in just perfectly, and there’s no end of distractions. But all isn’t entirely happy, a miscarriage a few weeks earlier still have Ellie emotional, although she is trying, in her usual way, to just power through it all. With a few days before their week away on the Northwest Coast of Northumberland, Max is determined that a date for the wedding will be set. Picking out a date where the barn at the pub is free – the planning can begin on their return.
But then, an unexpected guest in the form of Max’s mother, sans husband and declaring her unwillingness to return to the marriage has Katy up in arms in her typical exploding over everyone and everything, and putting Ellie right in the middle. Soon the fuller house is not the only issue as a fire at the Dog & Duck guts the kitchen, destroys the barn and throws everything planned and booked into chaos. Max, as always, has come forward as the voice of reason, nearly dragging Ellie away from home and off to their seaside views and escape from everyone and everything. A week in a luxurious castle turned hotel, glorious food and a lovely seaside café where Ellie’s curiosity and warmth brings yet another into their circle – and the cares and worries about wedding prep, the pub and even Katy and Rose getting along are pushed aside as Max and Ellie reconnect.
Of course things are madly busy – with the holidays, Ellie’s parents’ wedding anniversary and trip, the bridesmaids announcements and Flora going missing: Ellie’s dad tripping off a curb, mid-tango in Paris, and the never ending stress from Katy’s attitude, the multiple construction projects that Max is overseeing, the loss of the Dog & Duck while in reconstruction and the worries about timetables all play in. As does Polly’s big secret and the distance it put between them…… until another holiday snowstorm threatens like the one a year before, and the wedding day dawns cold, snowy and utterly enchanting.
This is a village that comes together to celebrate and support its own, and Ellie and Max at the center are just the perfect couple to bring everyone together in ways unexpected. Steeples has created a storybook village with plenty of life-challenges, yet allows everyone to both be themselves and bring out the best in others. A lovely series that will sweep you away and make you long for your own little cottage, just off the village green to call your very own, with a welcome that is only possible at the Dog & Duck.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I have loved this series so much and sorry it's now come to an end it's brilliantly well written and characters are great and lovely to go back to the lovely little village. It's about romance and families and pulling together. So warm to read and an easy book to curl up and read. Max and Ellie are wanting to sort their wedding out and decide for a Christmas wedding as don't want to put it off any more. Max's mum who has been living in Spain ends up on their doorstep saying she's left her partner but Max's sister isn't impressed. Max is wanting to take Ellie away but she's really not sure the time is right but she goes and has a wonderful time and gives her a new life and she makes a great new friend to. Once they are home she is having an evening with girlfriends and she learns her pub the dog and duck is on fire and she is devastated as its her life and her wedding is there in just a short time so can they get married or not and will they be able to sort the barn out that burnt down along with the damage at the pub. Great read and sad it's the end of the series.
Ellie is enjoying her life as mother, landlady of the Dog and Duck and Lady of the Manor but the icing on the cake will be marrying her beloved Max, but with so much in her lap already will she be able to cope with all of the stresses and strains organising it.......... especially when the mother in law turns up!
A lovely finale to what has been a great series and I will be sad to leave Little Leyton behind, a village of great characters and a lot of fun!
I have reviewed the previous title in the series, Wedding Bells at the Dog and Duck, and was eager to get into this one. Ellie and Max own the Dog and Duck pub in the quaint village of Little Leyton. They are recent parents, their son Noel having come into the world earlier than expected in the last book. They are a lovely family.
Now, they are planning their wedding very close to Christmas and are very busy. I'm so glad to be back at the Dog and Duck with Ellie and her family. Sasha and Josie are bridesmaids and Polly has a secret.
Jill Steeples' books are realistic, funny sweet heartwarming and pull you in. I'm sad that the series is over but I devoured every word and the characters are like family to me and the place really feels like home.
Happily Ever After at the Dog and Duck is full of suspense, romance and happiness and I was rooting for the characters all the way through.
Although it's part of a series, the book makes a good standalone novel as events from the previous book is explained and characters are well (re)introduced. Lots of good visuals and descriptions.
Will everything go to plan? Will there be a happy ever after? 5 stars.
Thanks to Jill Steeples and Aria for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review as well as a place on the blog tour for this title.
I loved this heartwarming story! It may be the fourth in the series and there are lots of characters but it is a brilliant story, I just didn’t want to put it down until I’d finished it! Set in the village of Little Leyton, the main couple featured are Max and Ellie. They live in the local manor house - Braithwaite Manor - along with other family members, a friend and their dogs! Max and Ellie are planning their December wedding but there are going to be many obstacles to be overcome before they can have their big day! What with the unexpected arrival of Max’s Mum, Katy’s reaction to her, a fire, snow, a lost dog and so much more, this is the saga of a small community, giving readers a taste of village life, community spirit and romance in an enthralling read.
The talented author brings Little Leyton and the people living there to life in the pages of the story. It is so easy to relate to the characters that they feel like friends. I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending this - and other books by this author - to anyone who appreciates well written contemporary sagas with plenty of drama, fun and laughter alongside the eventual HEA romance. I can’t wait to read more by this author in future!
I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.
I am late to this series which follows the lives of Ellie and Max and many of their family and friends.
Because there was such a large cast and I hadn't read the previous books I did struggle to get into it and remember who was who but I'm pleased I stuck with it because it pulled together and I'm sure for anyone who read the earlier series books they would be able to delve straight in!
I love Christmas books (& movies!) and this did not disappoint with a feel-good theme running all the way through, you just knew there would be a happy ending - it doesn't have 'happily ever after' in the title for no reason. Despite knowing all would end well it still flowed really well and there were some twists and turns along the way; it raised chuckles as well as eyebrows at times. You would absolutely want to be friends with Ellie and Max who were a very caring, and clearly very in-love, couple.
Definitely one to read at this time of year (September onwards) as talk of all things festive, there is a Christmas wedding to prepare for, was widespread and overall it was an upbeat and cheerful story that closed off the series perfectly. Now I'm off to look up the earlier books!
My thanks to Aria and NetGalley for providing me with this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
I'm going to miss Ellie and Max. There, I've said it. If you haven't read this series, this installment might be a tad tough to get into because there's a large group of characters we've come to know. The village of Little Leyton, where the Dog and Duck is located, and the people there are as much a character as the main two. This time around, there's a bigger crisis that usual- a fire, a missing dog, and so on- but as always, you know there's going to be a happy ending. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Ellie and Max live in the village of Little Leyton. They have a son, Noel, and they are planning their wedding during the Christmas season.
The Dog and Duck Pub has been Ellie's special place. She has managed and owned it. She has made changes and helped the Dog and Duck become the center of social life in the village.
Now, her wedding reception will take place at the pub. Between the Christmas season, the wedding and various other events, it is a very busy time for Ellie and Max and their friends and family.
This is the final entry in the series. This is the first book in the series which I have read. It took me a little bit to catch up, but the explanations about people, relationships and past events helped me find my way.
Ellie is an interesting character. She is open and friendly to people. She welcomes everyone to both the pub and her home. At the same time she seems to be worried about everything and everyone she knows. She constantly moves back and forth between optimism and pessimism. But, she never loses her feeling of love for the people around her.
Max is a saint. He provides for everyone whether it is moral support, financial support or sweat equity. He is charming, wealthy and handsome. When Ellie is upset or worried he does whatever it takes to make her happy. He is the ideal hero.
This story has a lot happening. A fire, a special dog gets lost, family members have difficulties with one another, an ankle gets broken, surprise visitors arrive. At the same time, there are celebrations, parties, and happiness all around.
At times I felt there may have been too many events happening. But, this is about village life and in the real world, people and villages have ups and downs.
This has been a well received series. I can understand why. The characters, whether Ellie and Max or secondary characters are all warm and comforting people.
For me the only short coming was the fact that there were many descriptions rather than allowing the reader to be involved in the action.
This is the first book I have read by Ms Steeple. I will look for more of her books.
I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.
This is a first for me by this author. I didn't realise this was part of a series when I requested it.
This is a series which follows the lives of Ellie, Max and many of their family and friends.
Because there was such a large cast and I haven't read the previous books I did struggle to get into it and remember who was who, I stuck with it and was glad I did because it pulled together nicely.
Ellie and Max live in the village of Little Leyton with their son, Noel, and are planning their wedding during the Christmas season. What could go wrong?
The Dog and Duck Pub has been Ellie's special place. She's managed it, owned it and made changes to help the Dog and Duck become the centre of social life in the village and her own wedding reception will take place there.
Ellie and Max are an adorable couple who are very caring and so clearly in-love. Ellie is open and friendly where as Max is the provider. Ellie welcomes everyone to both the pub and her home. Max is charming, wealthy, handsome and great for moral support. Ellie seems to worry about everything and everyone she knows, moving constantly back and forth between optimism and pessimism. When Ellie is upset or worried Max does whatever it takes to make her happy.
As you would expect with village life there's a lot happening. A fire, family members have difficulties with one another, a special dog gets lost, an ankle gets broken and surprise visitors arrive, but at the same time, there are celebrations, parties, and happiness all around.
It flowed really well with some twists and turns along the way, it will make you chuckle and raise your eyebrows at times, but overall it was an upbeat and cheerful story.
I'll be adding the others in this series to my TBR pile and re-reading in the correct order.
I have previously read the other books in the Dog and Duck series. I was lucky to receive an early preview copy from Netgalley. This is book 4, and the last book in the series. It would definitely help to read the previous books, as this book would not be as enjoyable read alone. Following on from the birth of Noel, a few months previously, Ellie feels exhausted, everything seems to be going wrong, when everything seemed to be going right. She is meant to be planning her wedding to Max, but now she has doubts as to whether it will actually happen if not. Max takes her away for a romantic break, where they meet Fliss, who becomes a friend. Back home, incidents including a fire help to give Ellie perspective, and she starts to realise what is important in life. With the help of family and friends, it looks like her Christmas wedding might actually happen. It was sad that this was the last book in the series, although it ended well. I am hoping that the introduction of Gloss might mean a new book in the future, possibly with a cameo from Ellie and Max. This book was both happy and sad in places. There was a lot of action which meant that I couldn't put it down. It was a very enjoyable read, and I would highly recommend it.
This is one of those stories that are ideal for a lazy afternoon or a weekend snooze read. Satisfying, romantic, idyllic setting, very nice people and all is right with the world.
We have a young couple not married with a baby who want now to get married. They are financially very stable - have a beautiful home, a manor in fact, and owners of a successful pub the said Dog & Duck. They are surrounded by the village with nice friends and the only worry is that something will happen to put off the much planned for wedding.
A broken ankle of the bride's father, the entire barn burning down are two of the mishaps on the way on top of the bride's mother leaving her husband and turning up on their doorstep. The bridegroom's sister is a stroppy one who cannot get on with the mother so there is tension in the house but the house is sufficiently big enough for all to have their own space, thank God.
If you're looking for a little me time as Winter approaches, this is the perfect book to curl up with. I've already read other books in this series, but with sufficient backstory and character information provided, you can read this last book as a standalone.
This instalment of life at the Dog and Duck is full of family drama, and unexpected incidents and you meet familiar characters and new faces. The story portrays the dynamic flow of everyday life well, and this gives this lovely story an authentic edge.
It is pleasantly seasonal and rounds up the series perfectly.
Read this and enjoy and then put the other books in the series on your Christmas list.
I received a copy of this book from Aria Fiction via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Soooooo I didn't realise this was a book in a series until now. I read it really confused as to why this was even a book. There is no plot to this book, it is just a series of slightly unfortunate events that aren't of any impact or interest. It's very diary like and the main protagonist is just anxious throughout with no reason (perhaps that's clearer in the first 3 books). The writing was adequate, but the lack of plot frustrated me. The main reason I finished reading it is because I didn't want to have wasted reading half a book when I have a reading goal for the year...lame I know.
*This book was given to me by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review – all opinions are my own.*
This is the fourth and final book in the Dog And Duck series which I have to admit, I'm absolutely gutted to discover. I had a feeling it wouldn't go on forever but I will miss Ellie and Max and the family they have created within the village of Little Leyton.
This fine instalment sees Ellie come full circle from the single girl who returned home to the village she'd grown up in, to the mother, wife-to-be, business owner and all round lady of the manor she has become.
Not without a full cast of friends, family and dogs this story is full of love, laughter, family drama and a few disasters along the way. A very warm, cosy read perfect for cold and dreary evenings and the run up to Christmas.
I have really enjoyed the Dog & Duck series and was sorry to find this was the final book in the series. But it was a great finale and was a fabulous round off the whole series!
I wouldn't recommend this as a standalone book, you need to read the first 3 books before this one.
This is a story of family, friendship, love, joy, happiness, community, mishaps and several dramas along the way. The whole series has been an entertaining tale of heartwarming, feel-good books. I really liked all of the characters in the book and I do feel sorry to leave Little Layton.
Delightful! I can't wait to read more from Jill Steeples.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
There's a big issue: this book is the last in this series and I loved this series :( It was great to meet again the cast of characters, read their stories and see how things were going on. This feel-good and heartwarming series will surely be missed. Even if this book can be read as a stand-alone it's better to read the previous books. Highly recommended! Many thanks to Aria and Netgalley for this ARC
I have so enjoyed reading this series by Jill Steeples and now feel I know the characters as if they are real friends! Poor Ellie has so much to contend with as Christmas approaches and it seems as if life is throwing everything it can in her path to upset her plans. It has just the right mix of romance, humour and tension - and I certainly turned that final page with a satisfied smile on my face. This is an absolutely gorgeous winter read!
Max and Ellie finally decide to have their wedding just before Christmas. Eveything that could go wrong does but in spite of this their special day turns out just fine. A lovely story full of emotions and dramas that you too should enjoy reading.
It was a lovely follow on from the previous Dog and Duck books. The story left you feeling as though you actually knew the people and the village. Loved every minute of the book. Would recommend it to friends.
The fourth book in The Dog and Duck Series a well written story that kept me smiling as I read. Developer Max and his bride-to-be Ellie's story which I enjoyed seeing come together. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A charming romance filled with various family dramas and one spectacular event. The village of Little Leyton plays a starring role as do some of the village residents. A great winter read!
So I have finished the last book in the series and it was a perfect ending for Max and Ellie. Although there was some drama everything worked out perfect.
