Elemental Phases #2

Guardian of the Earth House

Rate this book
The Keeper of the Quintessence, Tessie has spent millennia hiding from other supernatural beings, but now her enemies are closing in. She has no choice but to turn to the Elementals’ leader for help. Honorable, super-powerful and way too appealing, Job seems annoyingly perfect. But, since the guy owns a castle, he’s gotta have a spare bedroom, right?

Consumed with saving his people from extinction, Job, King of the Earth House isn’t thrilled when Tessie shows up in his office demanding sanctuary. She might be lying about her powers and intentions. Her tacky clothes and use of human slang baffle him. Her smiles and feminine curves drive him crazy. So, why is this chaotic woman starting to feel an awful lot like his destined Match?

WOW.

I actually debated whether or not I should even read this instalment, because Job seemed so boring in the first book. All I can say is, I'm so glad I didn't skip it. There's nothing better than a straight-laced hero who suddenly discovers that he's willing to break all the rules when it comes to keeping his heroine.

Gannon is funny, romantic, and a great damn plotter. Y'all know this by now. Read her goddamned books. Also, I've yet to come across a book of hers that isn't 1000% safe.

Spoilers ahead
3.5 * rounded up for now

We continue from book 1, the Elementals are two years out from the catastrophic events of "the Fall". The bad guys are still in play, one faction looking for revenge as Chason lost his match in the fall and the true bad guys the Air phase are still bent on destruction.

Here we have Job the oldest Living phase, well respected, the leader of the council and cool calm and collectrd with immense power. Job has been alive over a century and never thought to find his match.....enter Tessie!
Tessie was revealed at the end of book 1, she's the quintessence, a being of supposed great power who Ty hoped would be able to undo the effects of the fall. Now with so many ppl after her Tessie seeks sanctuary with Job.
Things are not what they seem with Tessie however, Job finds the unexpected, the bad guys are still in play and Gion is still around evil ir maybe not.

********"
I really enjoyed this one, we get one couple this time with a couple of povs from other ppl important to the plot.
I thought Job, rule follower that he is, would've been a boring MC but ain't no wayyyyyyyyyyy 😂 Job brought the heat!!!!!
Tessie was such sweet chaos, she brought the fun and joy to Job's life that he desperately needed.
Loved seeing the secondary characters, mcs of past and future books
Gion still has my heart, what can I say I like my guys a little morally grey
All in all I'm enjoying this series,on to the next

Original thoughts

I almost quit on this series after the chaos of book 1 but thankfully I took a chance on book 2 and it paid off

I thought about skipping this one cause I wanted Gion and Ty's story really bad, but I'm so glad I didn't. The series is wholly interconnected, and while Job and Tess were undeniably cute, I loved the glimpse of Gion reading mental health books to try to understand what Ty is going through preparation for the next book. And we got to catch up with Cross;) I do love me a tortured hero!

This is just my opinion so....

What i can say is that i'm disappointed but not surprised. This book contains some of the cringiest conversations I've ever read in my entire life, featuring some 60s and 80s references that are just ridiculous but i get it, this book is from 2012. Lackluster plot, a good premise though, but very poorly executed mo, unlikable characters, who are written in absolute contrast with how they were initially portrayed to be.

Job is supposed to be all broody and wise and quiet but his character revolves around answering " I see" whenever addressed by someone and being obsessed with teets.
Tessie is supposed to be this powerful being who holds the Quintessence but she is just an insufferable sissy who calls people "wiseass" and says " Nah, dude" non stop. I was actually baffled at how she conversed with people.

I am still hopeful for Gion and Ty!!

PS: i purchased the series so i will be keeping them bc honestly the covers are so gorgeous and kinda retro which i love

I ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT PUT DOWN THIS BOOk. If that is not the hallmark of an engaging series, I don't know what is. I was reading till 2am and only went to bed because I identify as an adult.

Job is so adorable! I love what a sweet and dutiful person he is. Tessie was the perfect match for him. She really helped get him out of his shell.

It was nice seeing Nia and Cross too and watching how Cross and Job try to build a relationship together. Everyone in the book is either sweet or snarky and it makes for hilarious conversations.

I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH. I just want everyone to read it.

Unfortunately, this wasn't great. Even the humor fell flat for me and even though the plot moved more in this book I didn't like the main characters that much. I am really excited for Gion's book though.

Great series!

Have enjoyed this author. The characters are engaging, the world building is well done, the plot moves right along and carries me with it. Her books are like chips, you can't stop with just one!

Looved it!!! This series seems more serious than off-the-wall, but I really think the drama is as well written as the funny stuff is.

2.5 stars but bumped up for my affection for the author’s writing. Starched hero who bears the weight of the world on his shoulders meets his Match in a wild-child heroine who has been searching for safety and security her entire life.

I’m reading these out of order but it’s easy enough to catch up on the overarching plot. The stories are all interconnected and it’s fun to see the early hints of later relationships, particularly Gion and Ty. I’m here for the romance, so I found this installment in the series to be very plot-focused and lacking in the relationship development between Job and Tessie. The few scenes/ moments showing their suitability as matches mostly work (and there’s a sweet moment where Job demonstrates he would have chosen Tessie regardless of Match fate), but I couldn’t buy into the “we’re not Matches, we must be fake-Phazing” romantic conflict; whatever tension and friction that was intended to create left me bored and frustrated.

Job and Tessie felt underdeveloped as characters. I have a semi-drawn idea of them, but I think they’re mostly intended to service the stories of the other characters and the overarching plot. With Tessie in particular, her powers aren’t clearly defined or depicted, and their appearances are essentially meant to fulfil whatever the plot requires. Ultimately this story felt largely like a set-up for subsequent books.

The whole Phazing/energy-connecting apparatus is not entirely convincing — it sounds like fated mates with super-charged pheromones or something? Gannon plays around with the Match/fated mates principle by having the characters fall in love regardless of the Match…but when the pull of fate is depicted as being so overwhelmingly powerful—biologically, psychologically, and spiritually—do their choices really matter?
Also, through the entire series there’s a heavy emphasis on P-in-V intercourse as the only “valid” sex, as it’s the only way Matches can Phaze and confirm their soulmate.

Guardian of the Earth House was interesting in places, I was looking forward to read Job and Tessie's story but eh, it was alright in the end.

I'm thinking the whole tortured hero thing is going to be a running theme in the series, Job had some of the same emotional print in his thought processes like Cross. Honestly as a story it doesn't have any activeness despite having some key players like the Quintessence or Kay. The interactions between Job and Tessie stays on a level that can't support the book solely without it feeling like it's dragged in certain places. They don't have much up and downs despite the promising start so it essentially ends up feeling like lukewarm relationship development. Then the parts that are interesting are given out in brief pieces and without much details to make it as important as the book wants it to be.

This time the book is majorly told through the main characters' POVs except for few chapters here and there to create interest for the upcoming couples. The end fight was kinda underwhelming for the characters involved. I mean even Tessie's character being a Divine and all doesn't bring much to the table.

Overall, it was fine just not that flavourful I was expecting it to be, at least it showed enough about Gion to make me interested about his story.

Now we’re getting somewhere! This one was so much better than the first in the series. The characters were much more fleshed out, the POV’s were whittled down so there weren’t a ton of different voices that you were reading the story in. And the spice was much more to my preference (that lap dance scene was 🔥🔥🔥).

After having read the first two books now, and about to continue with Gion and Ty (finally!), I can 100% say that reading these in order is crucial. There is so much going on with this world that the characters won’t resonate unless you read about the journey.

Job and Tessie got such a better treatment. My only complaint is the weird Gion chapter that happens right between the two chapters where Job and Tessie are walking in each other’s memories. It felt like an editing mistake, that maybe his chapter was supposed to happen after they finished the memory thing? Super odd.

Other than that, like I said before, I liked this one just as much as I didn’t like the first (which is a lot). If the books keep getting better like this, getting through Cross and Nia’s book will have been more than worth it.

At first, I was a bit disappointed that this one wasn't about Gion but Job and Tessie quickly grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. I became really curious about this oldest and strongest of Elementals, a man looked up to by many, steadfast and reserved, and how he would deal with Tessie and his developing feelings for her. I wasn't sure at first how they would fit together and whether I would be able to 'see' it - they seemed so different - but it turns out this human with the extra long lifespan and horrible sister, this Keeper of the Quintessence, is his perfect Match after all.

After the first in the series, I was prepared for and looking forward to finding out more about the Quintessence and how it fitted into the whole Elementals finding hope and love after the Fall and trying to sort out their futures, which is where I thought the series was heading. Turns out Ms Gannon has a different direction in mind and now I'm even more curious to see how things progress. I'm also now REALLY looking forward to reading Gion's story and am so glad it's next.

A great second novel and I am off to read the third!

This was pretty good but I have to admit that the best part was the epilogue which was the teaser for the next book. I’ve been waiting for book 3 since the middle of book 1. So I mostly just read book 2 for continuity.

But I will say that the spice here was very fun! I enjoyed the seemingly more experienced and teasing heroine and the strait laced uptight hero.

I really enjoyed both of these characters and the fact that we were in their POVs for the most part. One less couple for her to set up so we didn’t have to be in Cross or Nia’s POV. LOL

Very Safe. Honestly there is almost nothing said about these two’s history. There’s a point where FMC notices she thinks that MMC hasn’t had a BJ before. And FMC mentions a former love interest who died but does say at one point that she didn’t love him.

No cheating.

This was a little bit of wasted potential, I thought. I was looking forward to Job’s because he’s so different from the other phases, and mysterious. But I thought this installment was lacking in romance and heart compared to the others. It was insta-lust, insta-love and insta-dating. There wasn’t any progression or growth between them. And they kept assuring each other that they love each other regardless of the matching, but I didn’t buy it and I don’t see how they could know that.

Also, the reveal at the end that Tessie totally could have stopped the plague if she just got the health tablet sooner instead of hiding… that’s a big yikes to me but no one brought it up 🤷‍♀️

I did like that Tessie was such a tease, though!

When I was reading the 1st book, I guess I imagined Job as being this older gentlemen that looked like he was in his 70s because of how he was written. It was tough to imagine him as looking the same age as all the rest of the characters?

The thing about this book series. These characters are supposed to be hundreds and thousands years old. I mean Job is 1000 and Tessie is immortal. In most other book series, immortal characters are either insane because they've lived so long or like super quiet and reserved maybe? Tessie seems super naïve to be thousands of years old. Ya know what I mean? Her actions and behaviors did not seem to match how old she was. I don't know. Weird vibes.

Honestly, not really keen to read this. I was so desperate for Ty and Gion’s book but I thought I don’t wanna miss anything if I skip this. Book 2 was okay. Gave a lot of insights about Gion and also his obsessions with Ty which I loved. In this book, Job and Tessie didn’t moved me as a couple. Unlike Cross and Nia, there’s no connection or chemistry between them. Tessie,I didn’t liked her that much. She’s dull, unremarkable and not as brilliant as Nia. To think she was matched to Job. Glad it’s over. On to the next book..

This is a book in the series about how the world would be if you had one person made for you and you were in charge of keeping an element safe. While the stories do fall under insta-love in every story in the series the characters come together by overcoming obstacles and building on the relationship that the connection gives them rather then falling for it hopelessly.

This particular story the Wood Elemental and a Being come together to form a bond forged on understanding and love, which they establish throughout the book by overcoming obstacles together. This book, just like the others in the series, makes communication and understanding a vocal point in the book which is something a lot of romance books do not have.

Dear Job, Your boring Eminence,

I'm really sorry but you're just not my type :(

You're just such a good, sweet guy, and that just doesn't do it for me. I like the villains, the bad guys, the Cross types of the world. So really it's not you, Job, it's me.

But also Tessie should definitely dump you for someone more... evil. Sorry not sorry.

Yours insincerely,
Tal

While I did not devour this one the same way I did the first book it was still very enjoyable. I liked Tessie and Job but I did not love them. I did think they were a very good match character wise. I also really like the world this is set in. I am really looking forward to continuing with the series.

It was better than the first in the series but I was hoping for a bit more relationship development between Job and Tessie. I also kind of hated that Job's memories were used as a way to strengthen the Ty and Gion relationship.

I wasn't too excited to read about Job and Tessie because Job seemed more like a Gandalf character in the first book so I just wasn't intrigued. This was pretty good though because it moved other parts of the story forward.

3.5 rounded up to a 4. I still enjoyed the book, but I spent more time anticipating Gino’s story. It’s great that the couple work through and admit there attraction. I’m interested to see how the next one pans out since it won’t be straight forward.

2.5 stars! I liked it much better than the first book in the series, but it still had a potential to be more. The worldbuilding is still interesting though and I cannot wait for Ty’s story.
