Bound by Flame #2

To Ignite a Pyrite Spirit

Rate this book
Where there is smoke. . . there is always fire.

For more than a century, dragons ruled the skies without excitement or fear. That instantly changes when a shadow appears from a world beyond with a deal too enticing to ignore. Aedan and his mages seek shelter in exchange for a bonding ritual of the dragon's golden king, Eldates, to their beautiful high priestess. But everything is not as it seems.

Captivated by Cenara, Valk refuses to lose the chance to claim her for himself. As he makes each move, he becomes further tangled in her enchantments, revealing a side of himself he'd not known before. Pyrite might not be gold, but those sun-kissed eyes stalk him all the same.

As more of her secrets come out, all of his morals are called into question. To love the mage would mean turning his back on his family. With everyone around Valk demanding action, he’s left with only one decision to make: confront what he thinks might be genuinely evil or surrender himself to their plans.

Is love worth Valk's soul if it ignites his spirit?

To ignite a Pyrite Spirit is part of the Bound by Flame multi author collection and also takes place in the Dryad Chronicles world with ties to characters in other books.

3.5⭐️ 1🌶️

This was my first Callie Pey novella! It’s a very quick paced story about dragons, mages, and gods.

I enjoyed the dual POV and getting to experience Volk and Cenara’s relationship growing throughout the story. I expected there to be more back and forth between the characters, due to it being enemies to lovers but enjoyed their dynamic nonetheless.

“If you haven’t been worshipped before, then they were all fools. You may be a high priestess, but I’m going to show you how devout a dragon is when they find their treasure.”

My only wish is that the story was longer to allow for more world building and allow us to get to know the characters on a deeper level. I would love to know more about Cenara’s past and her relationship with her family.

Also, that ending?!? I’m ready for the next book!

I received an e-ARC and this is my honest review

To Ignite a Pyrite Spirit is my first read by Callie Pey. It is a part of Bound by Flame series.

It is about dragon shifters that is approched by Aedan and his mages. To do that they have to go through a bonding ritual. Valk is captivated by Cenara, the high priestess, who is to be bonded to Eldates, the dragon king. Aedan and Cenara isn't telling them the whole truth.

The story was fast paced with alot of action and easy to follow. It is a nice blend of fantasy, romance and intrigues.
We do get a little spice between some characters.
The dual POV was interesting and even if we see it from Cenara's POV there is still something left untold.
I like how Valk kinda woke up when he meets Cenara. She brings a new spark into his life. He is possessiv and protective of her.
I don't like Aedan. He is harsh and cruel towards Cenara, like she is an object to be used in his plans. She sees him as family and it doesn't appear that he sees her like that. Meeting Valk does make Cenara question her loyalties and the plans that is set in motion.

The world building was good and we did get a little lore thrown in there. There were a couple of place I was confused. Like you were expected to know what they were talking about.
The cliffhanger in the end makes me hope we see more of this world.

I read this novella as an ARC, and it did not disappoint! I would have loved for this to be a full length novel with more world building and relationship building, but for as short as it was it was super action packed! there’s a twist at the end that you will not see coming, and i highly recommend!!

3.5 rounded up - So thrilled to have received a digital ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review! This novella is part of the Bound by Flame collection, and it did not disappoint. It was past-paced, easy to follow, and super engaging (I finished it a day!). My only real critique is that I think I would have preferred as a full novel so that we could have gotten to know Valk and Cenara on a deeper level. All things considered, this was my first exposure to Callie’s writing and to dragon shifters in general, and I will definitely be back for more!

This is a novella in the Bound by Flame multi author collection and takes place in the same world as the author’s Dryad Chronicles. Tropes include dragon shifters, mates, betrayal, arranged marriage, and he falls first and fast. I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely loved the world building - both the environment and the dragon group structure. There were a number of twists throughout the story that kept things engaging. In addition, you don’t really know anyone’s true motives (except Valk), which was fun.

This story would be perfect as a full length book. Unfortunately, there was just too much going on and too much backstory for this to work as a novella. At times it felt chaotic - like the author was rushing to fit all the pieces into the novella. I think as a full length book there would have been more time to weave those pieces in and more time to develop the characters.

✨️I was an ARC reader and received a free digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review ✨️

I did ultimately like this story, and plan to read more of the novellas in the series.

I struggled with what to rate this book. Ultimately I settled on a 4⭐, though the first half was definitely more like a 3.
The first half had so many characters all at once that it got confusing. The 7 dragon horde, the FMC, her "father", the brother, the fathers mate and her other mates, the mages.... It was a lot. And half of them seemed pointless to even introduce.

There was minimal world building. Moreso small glimpses into various sections. As someone who loves having a movie play in their head as they read, this made it feel very empty and unfinished.
The FMC seemed flip floppy, even up until the last sentence. The MMC seemed overwhelmed by this need to be her mate that he was ignoring everything around him, then out of no where he had figured it all out and changed all the terms without any fight from Aedan. Aedan, who up until that conversation, had been fighting everyone on everything and self proclaimed that he has a major anger issue. But he just rolled over to the new terms with no argument 😅

I don't know if it was because it was a novella, but it felt like there was a lot of missing information. Spice level probably a 1🌶️. It was a quick read, and ultimately an okay story. Definitely interested in reading the other novellas in the series.

This was my first read by Callie Pey and it did not disappoint. This is part of the Bound by Flames collection.

I love dragon stories and this novella was a fast paced fun read and I enjoyed the storyline. Loved the MMC Valk right from the start with his loyalty towards his friends and his possessiveness to the MFC Cenara. Cenara because of her role took me a bit longer to start to like her but by the end I’m rooting for her and hoping she sees a bit more clearly to what’s really happening in her world.

Didn’t expect the end and the cliffhanger. I’m really hoping there will be more for these characters and be able to find out what’s going to happen.

I’ll definitely be looking into other books by this author.

⭐️ REVIEW:
Another dragon-shifter novella within the Bound by Flame series by multiple authors… I LOVED Callie’s world building! For a novella, there was so much history and lore built into this novella. I loved every second of it, and I wanted more! Valk was everything a dragon should be. Gorgeous scales, obsessive, territorial, and doesn’t let what he wants just walk away. And Cenara being a phoenix?? I’m in love with her!

⭐️ FAVORITE QUOTE:
“’My heart, my spirit, my essence are yours. You are the only treasure that will ever matter from this day forward... your dreams, your hopes, and your fears are mine. You will never walk this world, or any other, alone. You will always know that you are loved. This is the vow I make to you, my dragon’s mate.‘”

⭐️4.5 rounded up. This novella was surprisingly complex for how short it was. It easily could have been a full length novel, but I read it as more of an introduction to a new fantasy world and I think it did its job perfectly!

It was fast paced and packed with interesting relationships and character motivations. And of course, dragon shifters and fated mates, how can you go wrong with that? I loved how we saw a more primal version of dragon shifters in this. “Dragons were obsessive, passionate and rough.”

And the end! I cannot wait to dive into next book in this world!

Honestly… this book is not something I normally would have read. But once I started it I could not put it down and I read this entirely in one sitting. Cenara is the FMC and you’re torn on whether you like her or not. Valk is the MMC who is a dragon. Valk instantly is attracted to Cenara upon seeing her and quickly realizes it’s more than just that… he is pulled to her and wants to become her mate. Cenara, however, is promised to his brother, the King of Dragons, and plans to be bound to him. Cenara has come into the world that the dragons live in through a portal with her leader and a group of mages… we quickly learn that although they’ve made a deal with the King of Dragons, they have an ulterior motive. This novella was fast paced and the entire time you’re unsure as to what is going to happen. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this story because usually… good always prevails and evil loses, however in this story I feel like the evil won! Also - this novella ended on a MAJOR cliffhanger and I’m so confused as to what the ending even means. Again, loved the novella and I was pleasantly surprised.

4.5/5

To ignite a pyrite spirit offers a captivating blend of fantasy, romance, and intrigue in a world where dragon shifters reign supreme. The book is set against the backdrop of a richly imagined realm, the story delves into the complexities of shifter dynamics, with a focus on the tumultuous relationship between enemies turned lovers.

The world-building is immersive, painting a vivid picture of a society where ancient rivalries and alliances shape destinies.

I liked Valk’s journey and his series of emotions throughout the book. He found himself questioning his own identity and principles, torn between love and duty. Cenara’s conflicting loyalties - will she/wont’ she - scenarios kept me at the edge of my seat.

Overall ,this was a refreshing and fast paced read. I love me a good book with dragons / dragon shifters.

This is my first Callie Pey book and it definitely wont be the last one.

I wasn’t crazy about this book. I’m not sure if it was the story line or the characters. This is a novella with less than 200 pages so it did have to move fast. The MMC had no real drive throughout the book other than his obsession when he sees the FMC, Cenara. The FMC is obsessed with getting the approval of her “father” and saving her “brother” who is a fallen god? I’m not sure she really reciprocated Valks (MMC) feeling at all, even at the end. If you like fast paced novellas with dragon shifters, then maybe this one would be for you? It just didn’t hit the mark for me.

Thank you to Callie Pey for allowing me to read a copy of this book. I really enjoyed this book, and I like how this differed from To Keep an Emerald Rose. However, it still had the charm that I loved about To Keep an Emerald Rose. The characters were great, and I loved the plot. I cannot wait to continue this series and check out more of Callie Pey's works in the future.

Okay okay okay, I'm not one to usually write big long reviews about quick little romance books but I am agitated so I'm going to go off. Heavy spoilers ahead.

So, my biggest problem that I have with this book is how nothing is developed correctly, not to mention that our FMC (Cenara) is quite dumb and every other character basically has one personality trait. I can't get over the fact that they chose to become terrorists all of them, I could understand Valk Because he wants to follow his mate but ALL OF THEM chose to pledge themselves to a god they didn't believe in and start to fight in a war that didn't involve them.

As far as the relationship drama I think the stupidest thing Cenara could have done was try to go for Eldates' scale when Valk TOLD HER HE WOULD DO WHATEVER SHE ASKED. Even without the scale. All she had to do was ask Valk to challenge his brother and he would have done it. Maybe she didn't want bloodshed, maybe she didn't want him to have to kill his brother (not like he flinched when he actually did so) But her choosing to try and sleep with Eldates to get to a scale was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Yes she didn't want to do it and she wasn't happy with what she was doing but girl stand up.

The book is just way too manipulative, the ending is completely rushed. Randomly skipping 100 years and all of a sudden Cenara suddenly needs this woman as well as her mate after they've spent an entire book telling us that In all the years she's been alive Valk was the only one to make her feel the way that she did.

I gave it three stars because there was a point where I was enjoying it, I was actually liking the progression of the relationship and the drama felt real and I enjoy dragon and fantasy romances, as well as forced proximities and all that fun stuff.

All of that got thrown out of the window though at the end, I would say a good chunk of the middle is a good read but everything before and after that is just annoyingly frustrating. At least for me.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Have a wonderful day. ❣️

*** I received an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. ***

This is my First time reading novel made by Author Callie Pey and I am not disappointed.

The world-building is richly detailed, seamlessly blending elements of fantasy and romance. Whether it's the intricacies of dragon shifters, mages, and gods, mates, secrets, betrayal, shocking twists, or the thrill of high-stakes conflicts, every aspect feels vivid and immersive. The author's descriptive prose brings the setting to life, allowing readers to lose themselves in a world where danger and desire collide.

Following the journey of the two main characters, Valk, the MMC, is possessive toward the FMC and later finds himself questioning his principles and identity. Cerana, the FMC, faces hardship in her family and works hard to gain her father’s approval. One of a great novel that I’ve read who possess the story of enemies turns into lovers, and he falls first for her trope. The Spicy scene was a bonus point.

Overall, "To Ignite a Pyrite Spirit" is a must-read for fans of strong, possessive protagonists, dragon shifters, and fast-paced storytelling. With its gripping narrative, magnetic characters, and unexpected ending, it's sure to leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in this exhilarating series.

I received this as a ARC for an honest review. I didn’t know if I was going to enjoy this one as I found the beginning a little confusing as you jump straight into the story, with only a little world building. However I was wrong! The second half of the book was fast paced and throughly enjoyable. The MMC was very easy to like and had the whole ‘she’s mine, I’m an angry dragon thing’. I didn’t connect to the FMC until about 60/70% through but I did enjoy her from there on.

I would recommend this if you enjoy all things dragons and fantasy and like a fast paced book. It does have a little spice 🌶️ but can be ignored if you don’t like that kind of thing. It definitely made me want to look into other books by the author.

I’m loving the Bound by Flame series! This is the second one in the series and it’s all about dragons. But not only! We have a phoenix, mages, a quest for a God…
Actually, I felt a diferent vibe from this one, it’s a bit dark. Let’s say that the quest… may not have the purest intentions. The building of the world and characters it’s super embeded in mystery and intrigue and I thought it was super curious. I recommend!

Estou a adorar a série Bound By Flame!
Recomendo!

A big thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity!

This was an interesting story I had to give it some time to resonate before writing my review. I liked the world building. It was interesting how a lot of the characters weren’t all dragon shifters. The story definitely intrigued me. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story that had mates that weren’t fated before. It was definitely good. I liked how it was kind of fast paced in a way. I’m rating this 4 out of 5 stars and 2 out of 5 for spice! Here are the tropes:

Dragon Shifters
Villain Backstory
Arranged Marriage
Enemies to Lovers
He falls first
Betrayal and Deception
Mates (Not Fated)
Romantasy
Mythical Creatures
Portal Fantasy

I am an ARC reader for this story.

First off I loved this story. The dynamic between the characters evolved as the story went on and I loved that I could see how it affected each of the characters. The FMC was hard to read at first but that just added more mystery to the plot. The world building was slowly added as the characters opened up more about their surroundings. The ending was amazing and not at all what I expected.

This book is a great fast paced read and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a fun, mysterious, and spicy time.

I read To Ignite a Pyrite Spirit as part of the ARC team and thoroughly enjoyed the story! It is apart of a larger group of novellas and can’t wait to read the rest.

I do wish they were longer novels instead of novellas, so that the main characters Valk and Cenara could have developed further with the plot and maybe even add a little more conflict before the end. It was a quick fantasy read and didn’t info dump, which can happen with fantasy.

If you like dragon shifters and magic with a little spice, then you’ll enjoy this!

Quick weekend read! What stands out to me about this novella is the "villain" arc and perspective. It's what kept me engrained in the plot and is what captured my attention - especially at the end of the book. Valk is the definition of a protective dragon shifter and a great example of the "he falls first" trope.

I do feel bad for Velenu as I felt his desire to be alone with his books at a soul-deep level.

Well…. I read this in a single day and couldn’t put it down 😂😂.

I really enjoyed the dual POV as it enhanced the connection you could feel between Cenara and Valk. It has just enough romance and connection that it doesn’t detract from the story.

If you like cliffhanger endings, shifters, dragons and romance this is the book for you!

This is my first time reading a book by Callie Pey. This was different from anything I have read to date. I loved it. Valk is not your typical morally gray character you see in my romance books. He is actually good…but there is a twist at the end. I loved the banter and steam between Valk and Cenara. We get a spicy scene too. I enjoyed the writing style and the pace. It was just a great read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Absolutely adorable novella, and there's dragons, so I was happy as a clam! I really enjoyed the plot and building of the MC's, by would have loved to see a little more world building. I know it's tricky in a short book, so I'll give Callie props for that! Writing was lovely, definitely give this book a read!

I received an ARC for my honest review!

I gave this novella 4 stars. The book was fast paced and engaging. I really enjoyed the dual POV between Valk and Cenara. While the book is short, I would have loved for more details to get to know Valk and Cenara more as people. I felt like I didn’t get enough of Cenara’s background to form as much of a connection with her and her cause. I was a little disappointed with the end (prior to the epilogue) but I am hoping that there will be more to their story!

This was my first time reading from this author and I enjoyed her writing style. I look forward to reading more from her in my future.

This was my first Dragon shifter read and it did not disappoint. This story drops you into a world of dragons who have been secluded from the rest of world in a beautiful world of their own. There world is turned upside down with the arrival of a new, extremely large, dragon and mages! The dragons are wary of these new beings and their true motives… but fall into line. There are several twists and turns and a little bit of spice. The ending was left open… so I wonder what awaits our main characters next.

More please! This was a really good read, and I just wish that it was a little bit longer! This was a ride of a read. Deception, betrayal, twists and turn- it had it all.

Valk makes for a good book boyfriend.

I did not particularly care for this. The writing seemed pretty bland and not what I typically read. I didn’t like that things seemed slightly vague and I found it hard to get into. I also didn’t like how he was obsessed with her almost immediately. It seems like the book left out several good details and mainly focused on the mating ceremony and not much else. I did like Valk and his protectiveness and deep love for her.

Dragon shifter ✅️
Strong FMC ✅️
Mates ✅️
Phoenix shifter ✅️

For a novella that can be either read as a standalone or part of a larger interconnected series, this was a great story. I thought that maybe I would be missing something since I haven't read other books in this world, but there was enough within the length of this read for it to create intrigue without leaving an excess of questions.
