Whether you’ve got a teen girl or you minister to teen girls in some way, I’ve got an amazing new find for you. Magnetic: Becoming the Girl He Wants, by Lynn Cowell challenges young women to stop asking, “What’s she got that I haven’t got?” and start asking “What does it take to become magnetic?”
I know, I know. At first you think Magnetic is all about how to attract guys. And in a round-about way, the book is. But it’s really about how to become the young woman God wants by focusing on cultivating inner beauty and living out the fruit of the Spirit. In becoming the young woman God wants them to be, Lynn says young women will then be magnetic and attract godly guys.
Magnetic approaches the fruit of the Spirit in every-day terms, helping girls understand exactly what each characteristic can look like and shows them how to begin developing each of the characteristics. The material is arranged in bite-sized pieces with each chapter focusing on a different characterisic, making it easier to digest–and not so overwhelming!
As a leader of teen girls, Lynn understands young women and relates to them easily in Magnetic. It’s also an interactive book with quizzes, fill-in-the-blanks, and even practical steps for growth in different areas. Because it’s fun, interesting and interactive, I think this is one that will keep girls’ interest as they explore God’s Word and strive to become Magnetic.
Because the book is packed with quizzes, interviews with guys, and practical tools, it’s interesting, fun, and serious all at the same time. It’s also got a leader guide in the back to help adults navigate small group time centered around the book. In fact, Lynn gives some great advice on how to keep the girls coming back for more and even get them to read the chapters between small group meetings!
I highly recommend Magnetic for junior high or high school small groups and even for moms and daughters to study together. You might even be able to get away with using the book with young college-aged girls. This is a real winner and I hope to see more like it!
* Note: I received a copy of the book from www.bloggingforbooks.org for this review. However, the opinions expressed in the review are my own, honest opinion.
I am so pleasantly surprised by this book! I picked it up thinking it would be an easy read not knowing really what it was about. When I started reading it and realized it was geared toward a teenage audience on how to attract godly guys, I wasn’t sure this was going to be the book for me; but, oh my goodness I learned SO MUCH. Cowell details the fruits of spirit with such wisdom and sucks you right in from the beginning of the book. I learned and gleaned so much from this book. It set my soul on fire and inspired me to get to know Jesus more by embracing these fruits in ways I haven’t thought about. I think this is a must-read for all ages but agree with Lysa TerKeurst’s review, “This book should be read by every single Christian teenage girl...Brilliant!” So thankful I crossed paths with this one!
I found this book that I got when I was a teenager and had never read it, so I picked it up. And honestly even though it’s gauged towards younger girls, it was still so applicable!! I love how each chapter was about a different fruit of the Spirit and how to apply it to your life. It had so many good insights and I learned a lotttt
I received a copy of Magnetic for free from Blogging For Books - and I was really excited to read it! I did not realize until I began reading that it is geared directly toward tween or teenage girls.
Cowell aims to talk to girls about what it means to be magnetic and uses the fruit of the spirit to do so. I thought this was a good idea and appreciate that she went in depth with each of the different 'fruits' or character traits.
The book has a short quiz for each chapter and several stories that will help girls better understand what it means to live out each of the fruit of the spirit. However, as I read I found myself continually glazing over entire paragraphs and wanting to just hurry up and get to the next chapter. It wasn't that Cowell was blabbering on, but that everything seemed a little bit, well, boring. I think the main thing is that it just didn't apply to me.
Absolutely, the fruit of the spirit and the lessons found in that passage of Scripture apply to me! But the examples used throughout the book are about high school, young boyfriends, school drama, going out for the team, etc. As a young adult, I just couldn't easily put myself in these situations.
This book would likely be helpful for young girls and possibly a good book to go through with a middle-school aged small group, but this was not the book for me in this stage of life. Teaching about being magnetic is great, but the examples throughout the book apply strictly to tween and teen girls.
Aimed at teenage girls, this book invites young women on a different path navigating being single. Using the fruits of the Spirit, author Lynn Cowell shows how true beauty comes from within – and will attract the right (read: godly) guys. The tone is encouraging, friendly and warm and the author’s love for teens shines through on every page.
The book is most suitable for teens with a (solid) church background – although the Gospel is explained as well – and it would be a great book to read and work through with a small group of girls. The leader guide in the back offers helpful suggestions for discussions.
My only gripe is that there’s no mention of the possibility of girls staying single for the rest of their lives; marriage is the obvious goal. That may not be realistic considering the overrepresentation of women in the church compared to men.
Focusing on the Fruit of the Spirit, Lynn Cowell lays out a plan for teenage girls to become Magnetic. As the mother of a 12 ½ year old daughter (with two more following closely behind her), I am continually on the lookout for instruction on how to equip my girls to pursue God’s best for their lives. Magnetic has become an invaluable book in our home library. While I picked up the book in an effort to impart wisdom to my daughters, I found myself face-to-face with the mirror as this book inspired transformation in my own life. If you are a woman with younger girls in your life or a young woman with your whole life ahead of you, this book is a must read. Magnetic will equip you to become the girl God wants (which will in turn make you attractive to everyone around you)!
Reading a bible study/book about the bible takes a lot of time, it does not take time to read the words, in fact it hardly takes any time, but to actually apply the meaning of the words to everyday life takes time. Bubbling with common scriptures, such as the fruits of the Holy Spirit, this book analyzed verses that are usually glanced over because they are mentioned so much. Lynn Cowell's encouragement to memorize scripture inspired me to start memorizing and storing God's word in my heart so I can have it at hand in a moments notice. I think this is a wonderful book for teen girls because it encourages them to look to God, not some boy or anything else in this world.
Magnetic is a lot like the sermon about spending your time becoming "The One" instead of finding "The One." Focused towards teenage girls, Lynn says that in order to be "magnetic" one must practice the fruits of the Spirit. Each chapter is devoted to one of these topics and has a magazine-like quiz that helps engage the readers and help them know how they are doing in that specific area. It's a pretty easy read, with a leader guide at the end. I would definitely recommend this book for middle and high school girls.
This is a wonderful book to go through with older middle school to high school aged young women. It is written intelligently, but it is also very relational where the girls can really connect to the stories. I would recommend any youth small group go through this or any adult who is interested in leading young women (gives some great, fresh perspective)!
4.5/5 I enjoyed this book which talks about the fruits of the Spirit. It opened my eyes to different situations where I can use those fruits. It also gave me a new perspective on how I can serve God more, grow in loving Him, and have Him at the center of my life.
I wanted to like this one. I thought it was going to be a great resource for young girls. And it still very well could be, I just didn't think it was a good fit for me. The author goes in depth for each fruit of the spirit and shows how to use them in your everyday life, but I felt her "real-world" examples were too juvenile. They only dealt with boys and mean girls, and while I do understand that's a huge part of a teen girl's life at that stage, there is more to life than that, and maybe she should have also used bigger, more lasting examples. I don't know, I was probably the wrong age group for this, which is where my problem lies. But I did appreciate how everything was based in Scripture, and think it would be a good resource for preteen and teen girls.
I received a copy from the publisher, this did not affect my honest opinion.
