A Very Merry Mistake

A sexy cinnamon-roll lumberjack offers me a ride into town, a stay at his cozy cabin, and eventually his bed. All things I can’t refuse.

After several flirty glances and heated mistletoe kisses, we create no strings attached and no falling in love. Agreeing to the impossible might be my biggest mistake yet.

I visited the small town for one reason to prove a point to my father.

A secret to keep hidden.
And a choice to make that will determine more than just my future.

BEST CHRISTMAS BOOK EVER!

I absolutely loved this book. I could picture everything so perfectly in my mind. It wasn’t too cheesy like most Christmas books. It was perfect.

The spicy scenes were amazing! 🔥🔥

Jake and Claire were made for each other. Perfect setting in a Christmas town named Merryville, great side characters like the other hot brothers, her sister, his dad the town Santa, and MawMaw.

I don’t want to spoil it, so just read it. Can’t wait to read the next one!

I’m all for smutty, cheesy Christmas romances… but this was every single holiday romance cliche thrown into a stocking and covered in tinsel.

It was so unbelievable. I mean, HIS DAD LAUGHED IN HO HO HOs!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Color me the grinch, but no. I couldn’t enjoy this at all. It was like Griswald Christmas vibes meets Hallmark movie with lazy foreplay. 🙄🙄

"Jake sounds like he fell right out of a Southern drama. Ever watched Yellowstone?"

It's sugar, it's spice and it's everything nice!
If you like to spend your free time going through Hallmark movies like crazy, you're gonna love this one.

A cinnamon roll lumberjack cat daddy meets a stubborn and secretive city girl on a mission.
Add one failed room reservation and a cup of snow storm to the mix and you'll end up in a steamy forced proximity adventure that will leave your heart and mind in a power outage (pun intended, iykyk) 😏

"I like it when you say that."
"Oh, yeah?" His lips trail across my collarbone, peppering kisses up to my neck. "You're a very good girl."

JJ and CeCe are one of the swooniest couple this holiday season, so much that you'll forget there's a big plot twist coming your way. And boyyy, did it twist.
Even after the secret was out and the mess was made, you could still feel the love and care they had for each other.

Overall, it was the best turn around and it checked all the boxes for a cozy, laugh out loud, spicy holiday story.

What to expect:
✨ small town
✨ forced proximity
✨ reversed grumpy/sunshine
✨ secret identity
✨ found family

Onto the next Jolly brother! 🎄

P.S. Thoren Bradley is the only correct embodiment of JJ. Do not come around me with any other suggestions 😌

It was okay, I guess. Insta-love and all, but I did enjoy it, well, at least for the most part.

Claire, 35, found herself stuck on the road when Jake, 36, drove by and offered her a lift to the motel she was headed to. Honestly, she was pretty annoying at first; for someone with no other choice, she was very stubborn about taking his help. I totally understand why she's cautious, but Jake really did everything to make her feel safe, and it took them quite some time going back and forth before she finally gave in. It's really frustrating to watch a character act all prideful and arrogant when they totally know they don't have any other options. Good for her, since Jake was patient and his southern manners really shines through.

When they arrived at the motel, they discovered that there was no reservation made under her name. With nowhere else to go, Jake steps in with his cabin offer. Again, Claire has no other option, but this time she gladly accepts his help and thanks him for it.

This is where the forced proximity and domesticity come into play. They spend most of their time together, and one thing leads to another, and before they know it, they're catching some feelings they said they wouldn't. I think this is in a span of two weeks??

Like I said, I enjoyed the insta-love aspect of it. However, the middle part of the book became somewhat monotonous as the plot largely consisted of Claire learning various things from Jake. She's a billionaire heiress and didn't know much, aside from her hobbies and business, so Jake was more than happy to teach her some of his family traditions and recipes.

The third-act breakup hit around the 65% mark and it dragged on for 9 days, and they were both pretty miserable. Claire was there to initially buy Jake's family land, but after getting to know them, she decided not to push through with the original plan. She apologized for not being upfront about who she really is and made up for it by paying the tax so that Jake's family could keep their land.

She went back to the small town and made the choice to stay for good, and bought her own house even though she wasn't sure if Jake would forgive her. But it's clear that they're still in love. He just can't imagine another day without her, so he decided to forgive her. They agreed to take things slow and really get to know each other again. This kicked off around the 75% mark, I believe, so the final quarter really focuses on them being in a relationship and all the sweet, romantic moments they share. It's cute but then got a bit repetitive because again, nothing much happened and the main problem was already resolved. 🤷‍♀️

It's kinda tough to put into words, like even though it's not a thick book, it felt like it was 500+ pages when it was really just over 300. It wasn’t a total snooze, but you could definitely sense that this story should've wrapped up by now, yet it's still going.

I feel like the plot gets a bit monotonous, with them just hanging out together or with their friends and family, doing the same activities over and over or just learning new things.

Overall, it was a pretty good read for me, though. I had a good time with it, but I really wish there was a bit more to the story than just the cute, everyday stuff between the MCs. It was a fun read, and it had me feeling giddy a bunch of times, so I wouldn't call it a flop.

Book info:
- Small town romance
- Strangers to lovers
- Forced proximity
- Insta-love
- Found family
- CEO x Lumberjack
- Loss of loved one (past)
- Christmas vibe
- No cheating
- No V
- OM/OW
- With separation (9 days)
- HFN (7 mos later, engaged)

Notes:
- OWD. Jake's ex definitely tried to stir up some trouble, but he's 100% over her. He popped the question in front of everyone five years ago, but his ex turned him down, and for a bit, he was the talk of the town. He moved on from her, but she's still living in the same small town, so they run into each other every now and then. The ex wanted him back and even lied to his parents that they're getting back so she could bring him over packed food. But since Claire is living with Jake, she kicked out the OW out of his cabin. 🤭 Also, during the MCs separation, the OW tried to get back with Jake, again. She's really pathetic. She kissed him out of nowhere, and it took Jake a moment to process it before he pushed her away. Claire saw this, and the way how he quickly put a stop to it. So this doesn't really bother her that much.
- OMD. Her ex is actually working with her dad (colleagues). He lied to her, claiming his divorce was ongoing, but in reality, it wasn't at all. He's still married and stringing along Claire. He still wants her back, the audacity, but Claire didn't want to do anything with him anymore. The OM showed up at Jake's house, but he wasn't having any of it. He scared him off by pulling out his shotgun.
- No V. Not info about their past; it wasn't clear when Claire broke things off with the OM. And as for Jake, he said he hasn't been with any women for a long time. I'm not sure how long, though.

I adored this book so much, I cannot even tell you! I hadn’t felt like this while reading a book in what feels like forever. My reading pace has been so slow these days but this book, I did not want to put it down and finished it so fast! It was just so cute and with all the right Christmas vibes! It totally got me in the holiday spirit and want to start watching movies and decorating!

But I just loved both the main characters! And they were so perfect together! Loved how they fit so well. And the hero’s family was so cute, as was the heroine’s sister! I’m super excited for his brothers to get their own books cause I need them!

A Very Merry Mistake was the perfect Christmas book, set in a small town with all the Christmas vibes and activities, two amazing main characters who are stuck together, lots of spice, some grumpy sunshine vibes, and a sweet fur baby that made things extra fun and sweet. Overall, an incredible read! I’m really excited about this series!

DNF at 40%. Way too boring to keep going. The banter is flat and the humor is off putting and I simply don’t care what happens next.

Filled with corny one-liners and over the top Christmas cliches, this just wasn’t the one for me. Everyone has a Christmas-themed name, I mean, their last names are literally Jolly and Snowflake and dumb crap like that. It just takes the whole theme way too far. Also the dad who “looks like Santa” laughs in Ho-Ho-Hos. I just couldn’t take another page of it coupled with the fact that these characters have zero personality.

No rating, DNF at 5%. Well this one was definitely not for me. It was a reverse grumpy-sunshine, with the hero being the seemingly nice, sunshine good ol’ country boy and the girl is the high class stubborn grump (aka: total bitch).

The story starts out with the heroine driving a huge rental truck, her expensive designer handbag on the passenger seat next to her (yes, lots of lame, awkward info dumping about her expensive clothes, shoes, purses, etc)… anyway, she’s driving along, her rental breaks down on the side of a deserted country road just as the snow storm of the century starts. She sees no other cars driving by to save her so she grabs her expensive suitcase and starts dragging it down the road, hoping to reach the little town she’s going to before dying of frostbite.

To her great luck, our hero drives by her after a minute or two. He stops to help her and give her a lift before the main part of the storm hits. She refuses to even look up at him, she refuses to acknowledge him for several minutes as he pleads with her to hurry and let him help before the storm hits…. and then finally she says “I don’t talk to strangers”. What an idiot! I hate stubborn, bitchy heroines.

Plus the fact that her goal in reaching this small town is to put the hero’s family business out-of-business…

So not my type of heroine all-around.

The cringiest dialogue. The whole plot could have been done in 100 pages. It was just drug out way longer than needed. She’s a billionaire? Really? Of course it is easy for her to give up her New York life and move to Texas because she has billions of dollars. It wasn’t even a struggle. Also when she went back to New York for a week, when she returned they were both acting like they hadn’t seen each other in 2 years. He was suppose to be 36? 39? But he talked like he was much younger. And I didn’t think the author did the whole “southern gentleman/ accent well at all. The spice scenes were almost too much for me and I audibly gasped when they did butt stuff. Did not sign up for that. Has this author ever been in a relationship? Because nobody has a sex drive that high. The christmassy theme of the town was over the top. Didn’t find it charming. Was annoyed and had this face 🤨 for a lot of the book. Don’t waste your time.

DNF @ 33%. I just couldn’t connect with this one. They knew each other for like a day and were already like “is he the one??” and it felt forced. There were a lot of tropes in this book I usually enjoy and was excited about but this just wasn’t for me. It was a little too cringy. I stopped reading and DNF’d in the middle of a sex scene, so that really says something 😂

✨BOOK REVIEW✨

📚A Very Merry Mistake - Lyra Parish📚

Another day, another holiday romance 😍 and another one that I ate right up - this was just SO GOOD, and I did not want it to end! The Christmas-inspired town, the festive character names, the hallmark vibes, it was everything! 🥰 not to mention swoon worthy, protective, cinnamon roll lumberjacks 🥵 OBSESSED!

I came across Lyra’s writing a couple of months ago and she just has a way with words. Reeling you in and not letting go until the very last page - that is what I love in a romance, and Lyra just does it so effortlessly! Her characters are always so well-developed, interesting and fun, and the characters in this small town holiday romance are no exception!

What you can expect:
🎄 Holiday romance
🎅🏼 Opposites attract
🎄 Forced proximity
🎅🏼 Secret Identity
🎄 Found family

At this point I will read anything Lyra writes and I cannot wait for the next release! 😍 in the meantime, this beauty is out tomorrow! Time to get in that Christmas spirit 🥰✨

I initially DNFed this book, because I was on a fantasy book high. Once I detached from that and tried to read it again with the right frame of mind knowing it’s a hallmark type Christmas book, I enjoyed this book a lot! It’s a really good Christmas read. Yes, it’s predictable, but it’s enjoyable! Literally a hallmark after dark kinda book with plenty of spice! Tall handsome lumberjack- you can’t go wrong with that. I recommend this if you love reading cheesy Christmas books.

I am on a holiday book reading marathon. And I am LOVING it! Am I dissociating? Probably. But I am living for this. 😂

This book is it! Of all the ones I’ve read this year I think this one has the most magical mysterious christmas vibes. There’s a lot of mystery throughout this book. The town is kind of quirky. It’s very straight out of the North Pole vibes, yet it’s in Texas. Every thing about this town is VERY Christmasy. Their names are all holiday themed: example MMC named Jake Jolly. The FMC has some mystery surrounding her and why she’s just showed up at this Christmas town.

Over all I enjoyed it. At times I felt like it was taken a while to get where it was going but i still felt like it was a good story and it was different then other books of the same genre. I loved listening to both the ALC and reading the ARC. Listening while reading along is my new favorite thing. Immersive reading, highly recommend to anyone lucky enough to be ADHD(me). If you’re looking for that holiday feeling, you’re gonna find it right here with this book!

Some Tropes:

🩵Opposites Attract
🎄Small Town Romance
🩵Secret Identity
🎄Grumpy/Sunshine
🩵Forced Proximity
🎄Found Family
🩵Rom-Com
🎄Holiday Romance

A very big thank you to @hambright_pr and @lyraparish for proving me with this ARC & ALC. 🙏🏼

RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
SPICE: 🔥🔥💥

Okay but I’m obsessed. This was a spicy Hallmark movie in all the best ways and I loved it. She’s the billionaire hotel heiress doing research on a farm her empire wants to buy, but ends up in A Christmas town and needs help from the sweet lumberjack Christmas tree farmer whose family owns the property. And they fall in love. Ans he doesn’t know who she is.

Yep, it’s as freaking adorable as it sounds and Jake Jolly… this man is the Clark Kent of hot Christmas tree farmers and I am here for it.

🎄 Christmas Themed Small Town
🎄 Mistaken Identity
🎄 Golden Retriever x Black Cat
🎄 Forced Proximity
🎄 A grumpy cat named Tinsel

All I felt was joy and the spirit of Christmas when reading this book. Claire and Jake have the best banter, click in a way you can feel from the pages, and just feels like a warm hug on a cold day.

Of course there was the dreaded reveal of Claire’s identity and I actually loved how the whole thing played out. Bonus points for Tinsel the cat because I love her.

And extra bonus points for the spice because these row were HOT as can be.

I freaking love Lyra Parish’s stories so much! I was beyond excited to read and listen to this audiobook. I have been reading so many holiday romances and this one really stood out!

Claire came to Merryville with a goal in mind but all over her plans were derailed the moment her car broke down and a sexy, grumpy lumberjack offers her a ride and a place to stay.

Jake Jolly starts off as a grump but is totally a perfect cinnamon roll MMC! He’s a cat daddy and it’s the freaking cutest! He had a very bad, very public breakup and it turned him off trying to find love again. Little did he know he’d find love in the form of a walking sassy ball of sunshine.

“𝘏𝘦’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥—𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘮, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘨𝘰.”

Claire, our sunshine FMC, also had a bad breakup and now is just focusing on experiencing the festive joy Merryville has to offer.

I loved this story! JJ is basically described as a lumberjack version of Clark Kent and I was SOLD! 🤣❤️‍🔥 Glasses wearing MMCs get me every time. When the spice hit, this man was WILD.

I'm usually a bit 'bah humbug' when it comes to Christmas novels, but I loved the idea of a lumberjack, a sassy heroine plus some Texas charm, so I thought I'd give it a go.

A Very Merry Mistake didn't disappoint! It had the sweetness of a Hallmark Christmas movie, but with some added spice to make things really interesting.

Jake and Claire made such a good pairing. Claire is highly strung and more than a little stubborn, but once you got past that, she revealed her softer side. At first Jake seemed a bit too perfect, a sweetheart and a gentleman, but as I got to know him throughout the story, we saw his flaws.

While there were plenty of tropes throughout the story, it still felt fresh and fun.

A special mention goes here to Tinsel, the cat who was a bit of a grump until you got to know her. Reminds me of myself a bit. I don't know if it's weird that I relate to a fictional cat??

Anyway, if you want a Christmas novel that is both sweet and spicy, you can't go wrong with A Very Merry Mistake.

My first holiday read of the season did not disappoint. Jake is the ooey-gooiest of cinnamon rolls and if that alone isn’t enough for you to pick up this book, how about this:

❄️ opposites attract
❄️ small town romance
❄️ forced proximity
❄️ romcom
❄️ holiday romance
❄️ secret identity
❄️ dual POV
❄️ Hallmark Christmas movie vibes
❄️ a lumberjack that looks like a Hemsworth
❄️ one seriously grumpy cat

Chock full of charm, humor, with both sweet and heat, A Very Merry Mistake delivered all the feel-good vibes. Do yourself a favor and take a trip to Merryville, TX to experience it for yourself. Consider it a Christmas gift to yourself. 😊

(I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.)

Cheesy and tropey in the cutest way. The book included a third-act miscommunication that was very poorly done, but I love the way it was handled; it wasn’t insta-fixed. I think that’s what kept me from stopping there.

More about the miscommunication…it felt very forced. From the very beginning it never felt like she was trying to do what she accused of. In her narration, she never implies anything nefarious and makes it very clear she simply loves Christmas in this town. Further into the book she starts mentioning why her father wants her there, but in that she says she doesn’t want it. Yet as soon as the miscommunication happens, her narration changes its tune and starts sounding like she was in on it for half the book.

Another thing that annoyed me much more than it should have was this need to make being Southern JJ’s whole personality. Claire is a 35-year-old, well traveled woman from New York…but she doesn’t know what “rough housing” means. At least every other chapters he’ll say a phrase, she’ll “stare blankly” t him, then he says “oh” and explains it. I use every single one in my daily vocabulary (I’m in PA) and they’re used online. Another one was “shoot” for when she asked if she could ask a question.

If you are looking for a semi cheesy, cozy holiday romance this one is for you! I adored the Hallmark theme going on here and I loved feeling like I was a part of a small Christmas town during the holidays.

Jake comes across Claire on the side of the road as a storm is rolling in and insists on helping her get her rental fixed. This turns into a whirlwind of things gone wrong and she ends up staying at his house. She's a city girl through and through and is very hesitant to stay in a strangers house in a small Texas town. Here comes the Hallmark cues because we all know where this is going and I LOVED it!

Jake is the sweetest cinnamon roll lumberjack you'll ever meet. Claire starts off a the grumpy out of towner but she comes around quick. I was kicking my feet the whole time and so giddy. This is the perfect cheesy, feel good holiday read. You get the small town romance, Christmas tree farm fun, found family in a sense for Claire, just so much goodness. The audio version was definitely a great plus to experiencing this story. The narrator for Jake pulls out a southern accent and really gives that Texas feel to him.

I can't wait to see where the next couple of books takes us.

Thank you Lyra Parish and HambrightPR for the gifted copy!

OMG this book was so much fun to read!!! The characters and their names especially the ones Merryville. I laughed and loved all their names especially Glenda and wearing the ruby red slippers!! So much fun!!!
Back to Claire and Jake. These two come from two different worlds. One is the perfect Southern gentleman with all the manners and respect for women. He works hard but has horrible luck with women. He trusts to easily and has been hurt. I loved Jake and how he treated Claire. He saw her for who she really was and got her to see the world in a different way.
Claire is from New York City and the daughter of a millionaire. She had done everything he dad wanted and was out to make him happy. She never stood up for herself and like Jake, always went for the wrong people.
These two together have instant chemistry and while they do the whole we can be friends who have sex until you leave, you could see it building into more and more.
The one thing that I loved the most besides Jake and Claire was how the author described the charming little town and all the Christmas activities that happened in it. It was like a Hallmark movie with steam! I seriously loved everything about this book and all the characters in it!! I seriously can't wait until Hudson and Emma's book to see how that plays out! I know it will so good as well!!!

Omg this book was SO fun to listen to and a perfect holiday story. Lyra has everything in this one- spice, holiday fun, a cinnamon roll MMC, a Christmas town…. You name it you have it. The MFC gets stranded in town and of course is rescued by the MMC. She gives off feisty vibes at first but really she is just misunderstood by a lot of people. The town revolves around Christmas and the MMC family owns a Christmas tree farm. Like I said, it’s a perfect holiday read or listen.

I give this book 5 stars because it is exactly what you were expecting from a good holiday read. I have really fallen in love with this author and her writing style.

This was an adorable Holiday romance.

I absolutely loved Jake and Claire. They are both easily relatable characters in so many ways. But what I loved most was that they both brought the best out in one another.

The chemistry between Jake and Claire was obvious from the start but they ignored that as neither really wanted to go down that path. But when the living arrangements forced them to get to know one another, sometimes fate makes that decision for you.

This book plays out beautifully and so organically. Yes, there is some drama and past issues due to arise that cause some unfortunate bad decisions, but the ending is so worth it.

Lyra delivers a perfect holiday romance - one that will have you smiling and feeling nothing but sugary goodness long after the book is over.

this book had me h o o k e d from the get go! i needed a cute, hallmark type feel book to get me out of my reading slump and this book did just the trick. now i'm on the roll with holiday books, GIVE ME THEM ALL.

i absolutely adored both MC's in the book. claire was lovely and i felt like i could really relate with her. jake reminded my of my husband, but with a dirtier mouth (hehe).

i think what absolutely sold me on this book, and lyra's books in general, are the fact that they're relatable. events that happen within the book can happy irl and it really allows the reader to connect in so many ways!

I voluntarily read an early copy of this book

This book was just everything I needed. Its sweet. Its spicy. It’s got a cat that is as grumpy as I am. And best of all it’s a wonderful story.

5 star review A Very Merry Mistake (Merry #1) by Lyra Parish

Lyra Parish is a relatively new author to me but what I have read I have really enjoyed . A Very Merry Mistake is everything I look for in a romance book. The story was well written, entertaining and I quickly became invested in Claire and Jake’s story.

I love stories set in small towns and this one drew me right in. As you would expect from a story based in a small town, everyone is up in everyone’s business and that just added an additional layer to the story. The characters are quirky, and I cannot wait to read more in the series.

This was definitely A VERY MERRY MISTAKE!and world record for fastest DNF for me.

Ugh. Another disappointing Christmas romance. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I checked out as soon as the FMC started acting like a bitch. She’s on her way to Merryville, the weather is bad. Her rental breaks down. She’s aware of a snow storm that’s about to hit, and acts like a f*cking 4 year old when JJ, who’s the only car on the road by the way. Stops and offers help.
Woooow. What an asshole right?! (Insert biggest eye roll, I might hurt myself with).

Not my vibe at all. Great for you if you loved it or wanna try it. I hated it. The end.
