Watched a video of a reading on YouTube.

I love the bold illustrations, the flaps and pull tabs, and the simple story for little ones. This book even has a small amount of math!

Title: Maisy Goes to School

Author: Lucy Cousins

Illustrator: Lucy Cousins

Genre: Picture Book, Toy Book

Theme(s): Mouse, Preschool, Moveable

Opening line/sentence: “Maisy paints some pictures”

Brief Book Summary:
Through pulling tabs and opening flaps on the pages, children have the opportunity to engage in Maisy’s first day of school. From helping her do math problems, looking in her closet at dress up clothes and seeing what she is painting, are all various ways the reader can participate in Maisy’s first day of school.

Professional Recommendation/Review #1:
Marilyn Courtot (Children’s Literature)
“The activities that Maisy engages in at her school range from those that kids might encounter in nursery school up to those that are more applicable to early elementary grades. There is painting and dress-up with flaps to lift, but then there is math with addition and subtraction problems. The answers are revealed when the tabs are pulled. Maisy writes a story, dances like a ballerina, and takes care of the class fish. Then, promptly at three o clock, she gets ready to head home. The pictures are like others in the series, fairly simple with black outlines and primary colors.”

Professional Recommendation/Review #2:
Cousins, Lucy Maisy Goes to School 16 pp. Candlewick ISBN 1-56402-085-1 (3) PS series. - Horn Book
"These lift-the-flap, pull-the-tab books show the endearing mouse Maisy having fun at the playground and enjoying a busy day at school. Simple sentences describe Maisy's actions, and black-outlined pictures in bright, primary colors add dash to these engaging books."

Response to Two Professional Reviews:
Both reviewers write about how important Maisy’s first experiences are. She learns about what occurs at school such as painting, solving math problems, having a class pet and more. This is a great way to introduce school to young children and get them excited to learn. The flaps and tabs to pull are also engaging ways to help the reader participate in Maisy’s school day as well.

Evaluation of Literary Elements:
This book uses simple, sketched pictures to give the story more of a childhood quality. The plot is created around Maisy’s typical school day, where she solves math problems, paints, plays dress up, dances and so much more during her day. The setting is made to help children going into preschool or elementary school, feel more comfortable with a typical school day. Through reading this story, children will know what to expect.

Consideration of Instructional Application:
One activity I would do is have my students draw out their typical school day. I would give them a big piece of paper, have them fold it into different sections, and start drawing different activities that we did throughout the day. If they are more advanced, I could have them write out what each drawing is. For more of a fun activity, I could have the children try to create their own ‘toy’ book, by making pop ups, and pull tabs in our own books.

I got the Mini Pop-Up version of this book from my local library, and I thought it was an adorable little book for children. The colors and vibrant, and the pop-ups make it an interactive activity. The book tells the story of Maisy's day at preschool and all the activities she does there. A quick and fun read!
