Laurel Holidays #5

The Christmas Extra

Rate this book
’Tis the season for a second chance at love.Stillman King likes his life in the small rural farming community of Rockmount, Pennsylvania. It’s a different pace of life than Philly, but Philadelphia was where his heart was broken, and he was happy to leave. He might be lonely, but he’s settled and has even managed to win over his snooping neighbors. Overall, his days as a small-town sheriff are peaceful with only the occasional traffic accident, drunk and disorderly conduct, or a random meandering cow to deal with. That was until the day the mayor announced that Rockmount was going to be the filming location for a Christmas romance movie starring the popular soap opera star, Tony Gugliotti. The same Tony who’d left him right after college graduation and headed west to the bright lights of Los Angeles without even a goodbye.

Hearing his former lover’s name shatters all the merry bucolic vibes that usually fill Rockmount, at least for Stillman. He’d not seen or spoken to Tony for over twenty years and had no wish to ever again. But, suddenly, here Tony was, looking just as good as he did way back when with his killer smile and movie star jawline. Hollywood descended on Rockmount and Stillman did his best to balance keeping the peace while maintaining a polite distance from his ex. Pity it’s such a small town packed with incredibly meddlesome people. All it takes is one stake out, a night stuck in the courthouse’s basement, and one kiss wound in a lighted pine tree to reignite the passion both men thought they’d left far behind.

The Christmas Extra is a standalone small town, forced proximity, gay second chance Christmas romance with all the glitter of Hollywood, two mature men who never really got over each other, a village packed with holiday cheer as well as inquisitive neighbors, a well-meaning cast and crew, and a tinselly happy-ever-after.

I'm not a big fan of second chance novels because they usually involve miscommunication between the MCs, but in this case the reasons because they didn't work back in the day was something different and I just loved this story so much.
I laughed so much with this book. Stillman is the sheriff of a small rural town and his interactions with the citizens of the town were hilarious at times. I think the author depicted perfectly what life in these small rural towns are like. Stillman leads a lonely life, mostly dedicated to his job because he never got over his heart being broken when Tony left. Tony is a Hollywood star and he ends up in Stillman's town to film a movie. That's when things change for Stillman as Tony has a lot to tell him about both the past and the future.
The whole setting of this book was wonderful and the story flowed seamlessly. From the moment Tony and Stillman met again things got intense between them, because the love that one felt for each other was still there. They were perfect together, the grumpy sheriff and the happy actor made a lovely couple. Even though many years had passed, they still knew each other so well that it was easy for Tony and Stilman to get back together.
I loved that Tony took the blame and apologised, but I also loved how Stillman accepted it and admitted he was still in love with the actor. I couldn't help but sigh and smile every time they were together because it was very romantic. I also liked that both the MCs were mature men, showing that love knows no age. Also I had so much fun every time Stillman found something in his house that hadn't been there before. From decorations to cookware, he came across them wondering but just accepting them anyway.
This story is a feel good romance, with a second chance trope pictured beautifully. The secondary characters were great and funny, and Tony and Stillman made me feel warm inside. It's a fantastic love story with a Christmas vibe that I've enjoyed so much.

I can see how this could be a cute second chance romance for some. It was just kind of boring and side tangenty for me. I found myself skimming a lot.

I’m in a reading slump and it’s awful, nothing is working and I’m so bummed since I have a couple days off to do nothing but read. I’m hoping my next book pulls me out of this reading funk I’m in.

If you look forward to reading warmhearted Christmas stories, then V. L. Locey’s Laurel Holidays series is a fabulous place to start. Full of small town charm and great characters, each tale is full of the holiday spirit and special moments that this season brings to mind.

The Christmas Extra, the latest in the series, is a great example of why I love the series and this author’s work.

It starts with Stillman King. Rockmount, Pennsylvania’s small-town sheriff whose life has settled into a quiet, small town pace. Whether he’s helping round up pigs, deliver babies, or just keep the locals stay within the law, Stillman and his old cat, Ellery, are content with their lives.

Locey makes us feel like we know him, how the years have aged him, and how much the town’s people count on him as one of them. He’s real and grounded within Rockmount.

The second chance at love and lovers reunited has to be two of my favorite tropes and they are combined here as the Mayor has managed to make their small town a cable show location for a popular tv soap series. It’s the holidays and the town is decorated with the beautiful trappings of the holiday season drawing in the locals and the tourists alike. Perfect for the show. Which is also bringing in a ex boyfriend of Stillman’s.

Tony Gugliotti, popular tv actor, has come to Rockmount with the series crew to film his new movie. And maybe see his ex boyfriend from college, the man he loved and left behind.

Both men, now older, both living very different lives at different coasts. But even with all the years and anger, the scenes between them and the intimacy that Locey is able to bring about through her images makes the reader understand the chemistry and feelings that the men still share.

I was absolutely invested in this romance and relationship. Watching the men reconnect, through memories and experiences was heartwarming and wonderful. Especially as the author wove the town and its inhabitants into their growing relationship as well. We got a feel of community pulling together as well as the love rebuilding.

The ending was perfect. There was a dramatic , suspenseful moment and then a lovely epilogue that tied up the storyline. What made this perfect was an element I’ve found missing in other books recently , and that’s the author has paid attention to the important animal character . At the end, Ellery, the cat, was not forgotten but followed his beloved owners to their HEA, as it should be. So happy about this.

I was left with a happy ending, feeling totally satisfied, and a great book to rec for the holidays.

And don’t forget to check out the others in this series if you haven’t found them already.

This was my first book by V.L. Locey and I liked it. It's a beautiful second chance story.

Stillman is a very good man, he does his job with passion and dedication, he really cares about his small town. He's lonely, though, because he's never given anyone the chance to be close to him. Not since his college boyfriend left him and broke his heart.
Tony is a famous actor, he lived the first half of his career in the closet (he was also married to an awful actress) and then he came out. He seized the opportunity while filming a Christmas movie to win Stillman back.

Their reconnection is well developed by the author: the sex attraction is still there, but Stillman doesn't trust Tony with his heart. I really loved how all unfolded between them slowly, without rushing things. Tony had to earn his place back in Stillman's heart.

Still, there was something that bothered me to no end (and having only Stillman's pov didn't help at all):
The reason why Tony left Stillman was understandable; he was 22 years old, young and inexperienced and hurting Stillman seemed inevitable.
But at some point of his life, Tony came out (we don't know why or when or how): so why didn't he looked for Stillman? Where was all the love he claims he's always felt for his ex boyfriend? Why did he decide to pursue Stillman just now? Was it just convenient because they were in the same town?

Moreover, beside the evil actress he swears was a nightmare to be married to, has he been married to a man too?

I bobbed my head... muttering about the amounts of tarts he had enjoyed over the years. "You know that despite what the tabloids say, I was happily married and so my tart intake was lower that you might have expected."
Happily married to whom? Not to the actress. And there's also this:

"We kind of know that the sex is good. That was never an issue then or now."...
"Of course I do. The best that I've ever had."
I preened inside... it was nice to hear that I outfucked his ex-husband.

So, he has been married to a man!
I'm sorry, but that ruined the story for me, I cannot believe Tony loved Stillman for all those years when he clearly tried to have a life with another man.
For me, it was like this story missed a focal point.

Anyway, I do recommend it because they're clearly meant to be with each other.

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

“The stars of Tinsel Kisses for Santa are two of the biggest soap opera stars on the planet, and they’ll be right here in town!” That was the news Stillman heard and was perplexed.

After two decades Stillman meets Tony again. They were lovers, but Tony left for an acting career and didn’t look back.
Now the crew will be staying with the villagers and filming in the little place Rockmount, where Stillman is the sheriff.
What are the odds, Tony will stay at Stillman's house.

Stillman had a hard life, and on top of that he lost Tony.
He never found what he had with Tony.
He’ll keep him at a decent distance. His heart will get irreparably damaged if he has to go through this again. But Tony has other ideas, he wants to woo Stillman.

With the film matters, matters with the villagers, the thoughts and emotions about the past, and all the struggle and doubts of getting involved with Tony again, we get an entertaining story to enjoy.
It’s told from Stillman’s point of view, I missed Tony’s side sometimes, but overall Stillman showed us enough.
Overall a good-written read, where two kind-hearted, mature guys, try to find their forever, together!

Goodness I do love V.L. Locey’s stories. Stillman King is still bitter about how his ex Tony Gugliotti left him to follow his dreams in LA. When Tony returns to film a movie in Stillman’s small two he does everything to protect his heart and second time. This was a one character POV narration. We got all Stillman’s emotions and feelings. It would have been nice to see a little of Tony’s. I did really enjoy the second chance aspect.

This second chance MM romance had a lot of heat, a great backstory, some tense action and plenty of holiday trappings as they roll through November and Christmas celebrations. A really good combination.

Tony's made for tv movie has chosen Stillman's neck of the woods for its production location and he and Sheriff Stillman King have a six week window to see if they can reconstitute a relationship that died decades before when Tony took off seeking fame and fortune in California. The climax is exciting and the epilogue a bit of dream come true happiness. I liked their journey to the HEA part but for some reason it was not as quick a read as I anticipated. Although the town's mayor is a bit of a manipulator, no evil spoiler characters stand between them: it's all personal career development and geography🌎.

Stillman was my favorite of the two leads; he's the strong, aching inside, silent type, lonely and only venting to his cat Ellery. Domestic violence in his childhood home has left scars. I did not get a true feel for Tony's internal emotional life, probably largely because the author chose to tell the story just from Stillman's point of view. No matter how conciliatory and good-intentioned daytime tv star Tony became I never really connected with him. He blotted his copybook for me when he went off searching for his acting dream and just left Stillman heartbroken. I did not note any mention of Tony trying to maintain any contact once he left. Throughout most of the present times part of the story Stillman is staving off the idea that it's all going to happen all over again and hurt even more. They live and work on different sides of the country and Stillman just can't see himself ever leaving his small, rural Pennsylvania town, not a place conducive to keeping big time actors for the long term.

Happily for both, there is a solution inspired by Stillman's dear, deceased mom. Turning near tragedy to a positive end worked for me.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

"The Christmas Extra" enchants readers with a seamlessly flowing narrative that effortlessly captures the essence of a feel-good romance adorned with the classic second chance trope. The story, centered around the characters Tony and Stillman, showcases the enduring nature of their connection despite the passage of many years. Stillman emerges as a commendable protagonist—a dedicated and passionate man committed to the well-being of his small town. However, beneath his exterior lies a loneliness rooted in past heartbreaks, especially the departure of his college boyfriend, Tony. The author adeptly weaves Stillman's emotional complexity into the storyline, creating a character whose resilience is palpable.
Stillman's struggles and the hardships he faced in life, compounded by the loss of Tony, evoke empathy from the reader. The poignant portrayal of his longing for a connection akin to the one he shared with Tony adds depth to the narrative, making it relatable and emotionally resonant. Tony's character is portrayed with a genuine desire for redemption, seeking to make amends for a significant mistake made in the past. His determination to rebuild trust with Stillman and potentially reignite their romance adds a layer of suspense and emotional intensity to the plot.
The narrative introduces offbeat characters in the style of classic Hallmark TV movies, adding a delightful and quirky touch to the romance. This blend of eccentric personalities, coupled with serious elements, contributes to the story's richness and keeps the reader engaged.

The seamless flow of the story, coupled with the genuine emotional depth of the characters, makes it a delightful read for fans of the genre. With themes of love, redemption, and the magic of the holiday season, this novel is a perfect addition to any festive reading list. I received a copy of this book from the author; this is my personal review of it.

4 stars. Aww this was lovely, plus I love the viewpoint of Stillman, who is both pragmatic, and funny with his observations e.g. “Dicks do not listen well, though. And much like cats, dicks have minds of their own.” And “It’s the fucking pits when a goose has more life skills than you do.” Plus expressions like “crisscross applesauce” and the disagreements of his (figurative) devil and angel versions of him on his shoulders, to the point where they become additional characters in the story.

This very much a Christmas romance with the classic trope of estranged lovers Tony Gugliotti and Stillman King, where 20 years ago Tony chose to leave Philadelphia and Stillman for the bright lights of LA to pursue his dream of acting, and Stillman moved to the small town Rockmount to remove himself from those memories, to be the town sheriff. At the time they both weren’t out but since then both have come out to the industry (Tony) and Rockwell (Stillman), but that at the time was also a stumbling block for Tony. They then meet up again when Tony’s Christmas TV movie is staged in Rockmount without much choice (thanks mostly to manipulation by Tony for staying at Stillman’s) and the reconciliation which is obviously challenging initially, goes from there.

And like classic Hallmark TV movies, there are a lot of off the wall characters, but combined with some serious elements as well, and the characterisations are great. I did wonder why Tony took so long to get back in touch and whether he had anything to do with the TV movie being staged in Rockmount, even though the explanation was that Stillman wouldn’t have answered his calls, still would like to know why now?

Great fun and really good read, and love Stillman and his angel and devil alter egos.

This is the fifth book in the Laurel Holiday series but it can be enjoyed as a stand alone. I will warn you that after reading this book, you will want to go back and read all the others. This book is like a written Hallmark movie and I really enjoyed it. This is the story of Stillman King and Tony Gugliotti. Stillman is a small town sheriff. He loves his town and while it would be nice to have someone to come to, he knows that it will not probably happen. Life is going along status quo until they decided to film a movie in his small town. Tony is an actor who is now out and openly gay. He is a star on daytime TV and was chosen as the lead for the film. Tony and Stillman have history. While in university, the two were together but not out. Being openly gay was not safe back then. Tony left to fulfill his dream of being a star; leaving a heartbroken Stillman behind. Stillman is shocked when he learns that Tony is coming to his town. More so when the mayor puts Tony up at Stillman's spare bedroom as the town has limited accommodation. He is told it is his civic duty as other townsfolk are doing the same. Seeing Tony again after 20 years confirms some hard truths for Stillman. Yes he is not over Tony and yes Tony is going to leave again. Tony on the other hand has a different plan in mind. One where he makes up for the huge mistake he made years ago. He wants to earn back Stillman's trust and maybe, just maybe, his heart. This is their story. I loved this book. The inner dialogue that Stillman has will make you laugh out loud. It is funny as all get out. The whole book is very well written and easy to read. A pleasure to read. You will be sure to enjoy it.

I received a free copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a very Hallmark style book where the main MC's get a second chance. Stillman and Tony were together in college, but as soon as they graduated, Tony left to become a star. Twenty years later they come face to face. Stillman is still hurt, but the pull towards one another is still strong and soon his walls are crumbling. Stillman is a grumpy bear of a man and Tony is the extrovert who loves to socialize - they balance each other nicely.
Along with the will they/ won't they take a second chance, there are some interesting events that happen, a variety of quirky characters, and a scary situation.
Their journey leads to renewed love and nice HEA.

There were inconsistencies, and times when this book dragged, but I'm not sure if it had to do with my annoyance over the age of the MC's. It stated they hadn't seen each other for twenty years after graduating college, so that should mean they are in their early 40's. However, there were several reference made that aged them to their 50's or even 60's. Examples - Stillman was wondering if kids still 'go steady' anymore, and thinking that that just aged him, which it would, as that term was used about 70 years ago; Tony said he went to a concert in'83 at some point after he graduated college and left for California, which is 40 years ago and would make him in his 60's. There are more, but the only time an actual number is sort of given is when it states that Sasha was in her 50's and about a year younger than them. Ugh, so frustrating!

I received an ARC from GRR, this is my honest review.

Second chance, curmudgeon/sunshine and close proximity with humor M/M romance
I must admit that I bought this book because of the description but what made me look was that scrumptious cover! Whoa…when that cover comes alive within the pages of this book, watch out! I cannot recall the author sharing their specific ages but I do recall that it has been twenty years since Stillman and Tony have been together. They were last together at their college graduation. They should be in their forties.
Stillman King is Sheriff in his small town of Rockmount, PA and gay. The people continue to vote him in because he is good at his job regardless of his proclivities. The mayor of this little town has another “great idea” which always means extra work for Stillman. And in this case it is a movie company coming to film in their fair town. Who should be the lead male actor? Stillman’s long-lost love from college who chose fame over him. Stillman certainly doesn’t keep up with his career. Now, Tony is coming to town along with the Christmas movie and Santa! Moreover, the mayor wants Stillman to be an extra in it! This will not be good. Right?
This was such a funny book. Here is an example: When Stillman who still loves Tony is around him, he cannot speak beyond three-word-sentences, but then he gets to four or more and thinks, “Wow, look at all the words. That college education was rebooting.” Such clever and witty dialogue and internal debates. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Gay Romance Reviews.

This is the 5th book in the Laurel Holidays series by VL Locey. I did not have the pleasure of reading the first 4 books but plan to remedy that soon! This one, I absolutely had the pleasure of reading it. It totally reminds me of a gay version of a Hallmark Christmas movie and it would make for a great gay Hallmarkesque Christmas movie. I give this one 5 stars!

The story starts with Stillman who’s the town’s sheriff. He was somewhat summoned to attend a town meeting set up by the town mayor since he had a huge announcement to make. The mayor announced that he made a deal with a studio to film a Christmas show (think Hallmark). He was asking for volunteers to house some of the crew. Stillman did not volunteer his guest room. However, the mayor told him that the male star of the film is in need of a place so he begrudgingly concurred. After that concurring, the mayor told him that he would be picking Tony Gugliotti from the airport. Stillman was gobsmacked because Tony was his college sweetheart and broke his heart when he headed to Los Angeles to become an actor. It has been so many years and he had somewhat nursed his broken heart and it was going to be trampled upon. He was pretty peeved but went to pick up Tony. They met once again after that fateful day. I’ll just stop right here and have you pick up the book and read to find out what happens! A wonderful reading!

3.5* rounded up

This is a Hallmark-style book with a second chance romance.

Stillman and Tony were boyfriends in college but Tony left without a second look to find fame in Hollywood. When 20 years later he is casts to play the male role in a Christmas romance in Stillman's town, they both are faced with facing the past and a potential future.

This book has so many sterotypes but that's what these books are and I enjoyed them. A mayor with trying to be more important than he maybe is, a diva star, close-proxemity of our MCs and interferring friends and neighbours.

I like tha the MCs are older, according to the timeline around early/mid-Forties. Stillman though acts sometimes even older but I think it is just a sign of him actually being lonely and a bit unhappy. He thinks he is content but actually he is still not over how Tony hurt him and broke his heart.

Slowly he realises that there may be a chance and that Tony's actions caused his mistrust in romance over all these years.

The whole book is in just Stilman's POV, it is very difficult to actually see Tony's thoughts and emotions. While he opens up to several points in discussions with Stilman, I think it would have benefitted the story to see more of him, he felt quite one-dimensional in parts.

The story drags itself a bit, you know the outcome and in a way, you just want them to confess and go on to the good bits.

A good book to curl up with a hot chocolate on a cold day.

The Christmas Extra is a very good example of a VL Locey story. If you are a fan and have read any of her prior lovely books, then I think you will find this one just as lovely. If you are new to her writing, then let me tell you what to expect.

Firstly, you will find a seasoned storyteller that knows how to crack open a character and look inside to uncover all the inner workings for the reader to understand in a way that can melt the heart, as well as make a smile….especially when the story is told in single POV, which this one is through the eyes of Stillman the small town sheriff with the gruff exterior, but also a more complex interior.

Secondly, the setting and surroundings along with supporting characters are explored in a way to add a layer of charm and humor that brings me back time and time again. Whenever I get my hands on a new Locey book, I can’t wait to sink into the characters’ world to feel the romance, chuckle out loud, and experience some nostalgic references that “been there” readers can appreciate.

And lastly, what every romance reader (or at least this one) is looking for when they pick out a book to read….lovable characters, witty banter, romantic elements that peak through most of the story, some heat, and a satisfying ending that makes us happy. Thank you, Ms. Locey, for crafting such a story….again.

This was a sweet, second chance romance between two men who had dated in college and happened to find each other again.

Stillman is the sheriff of a small town full of citizens who were a little too involved in each other's business. Tony, the great love of Stillman's life, a soap opera star who broke up with Stillman after college to move to Los Angeles to make it big, is in town to make a holiday movie.

Of course the mayor askes Stillman to let Tony stay at his house since there aren't enough hotels in town for everyone. Tony is ready to pick up where they left off, and at first Stillman resists Tony's charms because he's afraid of getting hurt again, but quickly realizes that he still loves Tony and that Tony feels the same way.

While this was an enjoyable book to read, I kept trying to figure out how old Tony and Stillman were. They had been out of college for twenty years, but the book referenced going to a concert in 1983, which would put them in their mid to late 50's. I also wondered why they spent Thanksgiving at Stillman's house with his deputy when the mayor had asked them to work on Thanksgiving.

The best part of the book for me was the names of all of the set workers from California. Each name was more ridiculous than the last and made me laugh out loud several times. Overall a fun book!

Stillman and Tony were completely in love during their university years, but Tony's dreams of acting had him heading to Los Angeles and leaving Stillman behind. The broken hearted Stillman became a sheriff and decided he was just fine living alone with his cat in the small town of Rockmount, Pennsylvania. When Tony comes to town to make a Hallmark-type holiday movie, Stillman's world is rocked.
I adore every bit of this grumpy-sunshine romance. I appreciate the history these men have, and I love that they still have so much passion for each other in their slightly older years. Tony's optimism and willingness to earn Stillman's trust again is a balm for the grumpy sheriff, even though he tries to deny it to himself and to Tony - as if he stands a chance of that!
This story is told from Stillman's point of view, and his inner voice is hysterical. I love how his inner angel and devil battle over how he should behave with Tony and what he should believe. I also love how easy it is to see Tony's regrets and determination to get Stillman back. These men were never meant to be apart, and I so appreciate their long denied, well deserved happy ending. This is a fun, sweet romance, and I happily recommend it.

I love this author’s annual Christmas Laurel Holiday stories. This one had many of my favourite tropes – small town, second chance romance, and friends determined to help them towards their HEA. I found it a sweet low angst read which hit the spot perfectly for the season, although I’d re-read it any time of year.

I loved how Stillman tried to convince himself that he wouldn’t get his second chance with Tony, and was happy on his own, when it’s obvious he’s not over him. I liked that their romance was later in life, and that both have had life experience, and made their share of mistakes. Tony’s scenes with his fans are sweet. He hasn’t let his fame go to his head, unlike his totally unlikable co-star. Stillman’s attempt at a few lines as an extra is fun, and shows it’s a good thing he’s a sheriff and not an actor.

I liked how the current work call out echoes and slowly reveals the story of Stillman’s childhood. The way it all comes to a head throws angst into the mix, although I trusted the author to get them through it.

I loved the supporting cast of villagers and friends, and Ellery, as all cats in fiction, is a total scene stealer.

Their wonderful HEA, and new life together is perfectly them, and shows that it’s never too late.

When the mayor informs the people of Rockmount, Pa that a movie is going to be shot in their town, Sheriff Stillman King isn't pleased. Finding out that his ex is the star, makes him cranky. And finding out that the town's two hotels screwed up on bookings and he had to host one of the movie 'people', infuriates him. The cherry on top is that he is hosting his ex, Tony Gugliotti.
Finding out that his heart still has feelings for the man, just plain scares him.
This is a second chance, living on opposite sides of the continent, small town versus city living, grumpy/sunshiny trope story. It's sweet. Fairly quick to read. With a medium dollop of angst as Stillman tries to protect his heart from having it shredded by Tony. Again.
Tony and Stillman are charming. Their chemistry is incendiary. And the lusty scenes are quite hot. Very nice worldbuilding, esp in the description of rural Pennsy. Good secondary characters; loved Deputy Teddy and Ellery the cat.
Fun and enjoyable read. Locey is known for her sports (hockey) stories, but I really love her holiday tales.
I received an Advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Life as a small town sheriff has been good to Stillman King if a little limiting. The dating opportunities are slim to none and although he likes the lack of danger and his neighbors he is a bit lonely. When the mayor of the town announces that Hollywood is coming to town to film a show, Stillman is on his toes with all of the ways that the production is taking over the town and trying to work around the rules. The star of the show is Tony Gugliotti, the man who broke Stillman's heart when he went off to Hollywood to chase his dream of being an actor. There are many years between the beginning of their romance and their unexpected reunion, but despite the hurt and the fact that each has done well in his chosen profession the love is still there. This was their opportunity to reconnect, work through the hurt and move forward with the guy that turns out for each of them to be the one. Stillman's pep talks as he vows to resist Tony and his conversations with his quirky cat Ellery were so cute. And their second chance to settle into love was so sweet.

Stillman King is happy with his life as a small-town sheriff in rural Rockmount PA. He looked for a place like Rockmount to escape Philly where his heart had been shattered. He was happy, even if a little lonely, until the mayor announced that a Christmas romance movie would be filmed in town starring Tony Gugliotti, a popular soap star and the man who broke his heart all those years ago. Stillman resolved to keep his distance but good plans often go awry.

Stillman was devastated when Tony left for Hollowood without a true goodbye. Now he is back and looking as good as he did twenty years ago. It does not take long for these two to realize the past is not dead but Stillman knows the filming will be over and Tony will be gone. Tony is not so sure. He plans on something different. To find out what that is, pick up this amazing Christmas story and find out for yourself. You will be delighted.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it to my pleasure. The opinions are my own.

This was a really good second chance, hurt/comfort holiday romance.
Stillman and Tony were a couple in college but both in the closet because of the times.
Tony left to pursue his dreams in Hollywood and left Stillman behind with a broken heart he never truly recovered from.
When Tony shows up in Stillman's town where he's sheriff to film a Hallmark type movie everything goes haywire.
All those old feelings are unearthed and Stillman responds by being snarky.
Tony slowly works his magic and they both come to the realization that perhaps they weren't ready for a future together when they were younger.
I really enjoyed the small town aspect and all the well meaning but nosey gossip and shenanigans that happened.
Stillman's inner monologue was hilarious and there were plenty of laughs out loud moments.
There is a moment of harrowing danger in relation to Stillman's job as sheriff but it's dealt with very well.
The epilogue was really sweet and I loved seeing them get their well deserved HEA.

Stillman is a small town sheriff in Rickmount Pennsylvania. He’s resigned himself to his job, his home and his cat. He had love once in college but his boyfriend left him for the bright lights of Hollywood. Tony wanted to be an actor and he chose poorly. Stillman was the one thing he regretted giving up.
The set up to get these two together was a movie script. Stillman had not forgiven Tony for leaving him. So the set up was two former lovers who get a second chance to get it right. They still have explosive chemistry and Tony slowly starts to wear
Stillman down. By the time they start dating again the whole town has them in love and engaged.
I loved all the banter and snark. If you’ve read any of Vicki’s books you will immediately recognize her writing. I personally think you will enjoy this Christmas story.

GRUMPY AND SUNSHINE SECOND CHANCE LOVE!

This was such a sweet, funny and romantic slow burn which endeared the characters to me and made me feel the Christmas spirit!

Stillman King is your ultimate grumpy sheriff living in a small little town called Rockmount set in his ways until a movie crew enters his domain with his ex being the leading man- Tony Gogliotti…

Decades ago Tony left Stillman brokenhearted when he went to pursue his acting dream and left him behind in Seattle now they are not kids anymore so will Stillman give Tony a second chance?

This is their sweet, funny Christmas love story with a grumpy cat who is secretly as lovable as his owner and a sunshiny ex who will go to any lengths to woo his love followed by a beautiful epilogue in a beautiful setting…

V.L. Locey writes great romance stories and The Christmas Extra is no exception. She has a unique voice and I think I'd recognize her writing even if her name wasn't on the book. 🥰

Second chance stories are one of my favorite romance tropes and the fact that this one was about older MCs getting together after twenty years apart made it even better. I won't rehash the blurb but I knew that something was going to happen that would be related to Stillman's past and the fact that he's a cop but I still wasn't prepared for it when it happened. I know I'm a tease but I don't do spoilers. 🥰

I'll just end by saying that this was a very enjoyable story and I loved the two MCs and the ending was perfect.

Stillman King and Tony Gugliotti were lovers while in college and a chance reconnection leads to rekindling the flame. There's a lot I liked about the book but, like at least one other reviewer, I found the confusing details around how old Stillman and Tony are now and how long they've been apart frustrating. Either they went to college in the early 2000s and are now in their early 40s, or they went to college in the early eighties and are now in their 60s. That's a pretty big difference. At least one other character is said to be in their late 50s, so it's plausible that Tony and Stillman have actually reconnected after 40 years, but still... this is a pretty big detail to have be confusing. I did enjoy their dynamic and it's a solid holiday romance otherwise. I'd give it 4 stars if the sequencing issue were resolved.

All the feels. All the words!
Such a funny, scary, hot story.
The internal monologue that Stillman has running in his head had me laughing throughout the book.
The supporting characters were all over the place and I was totally there for them!
Stillman and Tony's love , reconciliation and 100% devotion to each other made this book a MUST for a Hallmark Christmas movie. Just my opinion of course!
After my chuckling out loud 8 times, my husband finally stopped asking ,"what?"

I won't give anything away but I will say I love Stillman and Tony and my fingers and toes are crossed that one day we will get a short story about a wedding.
(Peeks hopefully at the author).

Love me a love story about a hot cop and his hot man.

The Christmas Extra is the 5th book in the Laurel Holidays series and it is a great addition.
I am such a fan of second chance romances and this one delivers all that I could ask for.
Add in a small town setting with interesting (nosy) side characters and it's a winner!
The internal monologue that Stillman has running in his head had me laughing throughout the book. I'm such a sucker for self deprecating humor!
Seeing Stillman and Tony win each other's hearts again really felt like a Hallmark moment!
If you are looking for a holiday story with lovable characters, witty banter, romantic elements that peak through most of the story, some heat, and a satisfying ending that makes us happy this book is for you!

If you’re in the mood for a small-town setting chock full of holiday vibes, a second chance romance with a significant time span, a solid cast of supporting characters who toe the line of well-meaning and over the top interference mostly successfully, and some forced proximity to boot, this story is a good fit for you. Stillman is a deeply likable character and its easy to root for him— I had more issues with Tony and some of his choices, but found it satisfying to watch him re-earn the trust of someone he claims to have cared about all along, and there are plenty of heartwarming elements on the way to the HEA here. An enjoyable holiday read.
