This remarkable system of organization approaches getting organized from a perspective that emphasizes the importance of integrating work with personal goals, handling change, and thriving in today's economy. Step-by-step instructions are given on how to prioritize and accomplish more high-value work, deal with instant communication and information overload, and create a versatile work space-at the office, at home, or on the road. Businesspeople learn how to manage time, simplify paperwork, and maximize filing systems-including files stored on the computer.
This has something for everyone from those who are completely overwhelmed and inefficient to those who want to fine tune their organization scheme to become even more efficient. The chapter about taming the paper that overwhelms you on your desk is highly practical. It takes your hand and says, "Do this first. Then do this. Reward. Then do this and this and this. Look! You're done. Now keep it that way." Following this advice, an overwhelming mess becomes organized within hours (depending, of course, upon the depth of the piles). I found a few specific products to use to help me with follow up and planning--finding the right tickler file that would work for me is a godsend. So go forth and conquer your own coworkers' seas.
As organizing books go, this is not the best. And I'm an organizing book addict, so I am something of an authority on this subject. Well, except I'm not actually organized. But I read a lot about being organized, so that should count.
One of the things I like about good organizing books is the universal suggestions. They are about the process, not about checklists. This book gears more toward specific advice - which couldn't possible pertain to anyone except people like the author - and checklists.
This edition is outdated, too. There are some good tips, but not worth a buy.
A good book on organizing. Goes through the usual stuff on finding a mission and setting goals, but has more emphasis than most of the organizing books I have read on stuff like managing paper and filing, keeping all your e-mails, phone calls, faxes, etc. straight. This edition is already dated in some respects with regard to computers and related technology, but this is the first organizing book I have read that actually attempts to discuss computers as related to organizing, except for maybe small sections on e-mail.
