An Informal Reading Inventory that is field-tested and provides a variety of diagnostic options designed to assess reading ability. The vision of Qualitative Reading Inventory, 3e is to provide an effective and valid assessment instrument. It offers enough options that assessment specialists can tailor its use to their needs. A unique feature of the book includes text link to the Internet . This feature enables readers to assign projects on-line, readers in one place can work with others at other places. Look-Backs raises reading level by allowing learners to look back on the questions they missed. The inventory is based on current research in reading and focuses assessment on specific questions regarding word identification, fluency, and comprehension. The book features passages with pictures for early reading levels, simplified directions for usage, and a description of the assessment process with questions to be answered by the examiner, as well as reconstructed methods for assessing prior knowledge. This is a good way to get a basic idea of a student's reading level and potential struggles. It only has a few passages per level which makes it a bit limiting for ongoing progress monitoring. I found it easy to administer and score. It does make a decent baseline tool and could be used to monitor for larger periods of time such as quarterly. It does provide suggestions on how to address certain areas that may need improvement but you would have to develop a more structured lesson plan beyond what is provided by the book. If you simply need baseline data (particularly for IEP goals/benchmarks) or a general assessment of a student's reading abilities this inventory can be helpful but it does not provide an in depth scope of knowledge like other reading assessments may provide.
The Qualitative Reading Inventory determines a child's ability to read by assessing accuracy, retelling, rephrasing, and rate. I found it a useful tool to pin point the reading level of the students I worked with.
This is a good resource but kind of clunky in practice. Also, if one is going to write a book about assessing reading one may want to follow grammar rules of English. I'm constantly substituting "whether" in my head for "if" on the page. Quite distracting!
A really interesting reading inventory. I think, as suggested by the person who gave it to my school, it would work especially well with Special Education students, who often don't perform well on more standard types of reading tests.
Very user friendly, however, I did not find the DVD very helpful. The examples given, while helpful, were not very explanatory. I did find a wealth of knowledge from youtube on how to administer certain parts of the assessment.
This is a timeless resource and it’s great to read the updated version. It’s encouraging to know my reading specialist knowledge isn’t completely out of date. I’m looking forward to getting back into reading assessments and interventions
Good resource for determining the instructional and independent reading levels of students. Similiar to other reading inventories but the CD offers more support than other assessments.
3.5 This would have gotten a higher rating, but with the errors, I couldn't do it. You'd think that there wouldn't be any for a textbook on literacy assessments.
