Gunnar’s story

The playboy finally met his mate which is a shifter as well but not able to shift! Cute story but also had some drama and more involvement from family that captures shifters for their own zoo- collectors. So getting from both ends basically- not spoiling but will get once start reading….. loved!

“Aren’t you the bad boy Redrock brother?”

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️☺️😍😄
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Lillian - she is asian and living in Darlington, a town known for having a lot of monsters since the wall fell over two years ago. The wall was a magic spell which hid monsters in plain sight, making them look like humans. She has a very small amount of snow leopard shifter in her but is mostly human. She can make her claws grow enough to scare away unwanted male attention, but she wasn’t a monster by any means. In four days, she was supposed to marry a man she didn’t know, from another country no less. She was sure if she ran, the asian mafia gang of snow leopard shifters would come for her. The only way to get out of it would be if she was already married. She has no job, no home, and a huge amount of student loan debt.

The Hero: Gunner - he is one of the Redrock Brothers. They are gargoyles and owners of Redrock Security Agency. They do bodyguard work for monsters and humans, and they have all been alive for quite a long time. They are wealthy and live in the penthouse in an upscale building in Darlington.

The Story: Gunner and Lillian meet at the bar one night and have an immediate attraction to one another. Though Gunner decides to be a gentleman and ask her out rather than try to take he home that night. When Lillian leaves the bar, some guys follow her and try to abduct her. Gunner steps in and saves her when he sees that she isn’t going to shift and save herself. Lillian makes a joke that Gunner should just marry her and solve all her problems.

I liked the story about the asian mafia boss going after Lillian and there was a side storyline about some witches who were keeping a zoo of shifters, which was also pretty good. I really enjoyed this entire series, the books weren’t that long, but had good storylines and terrrific romances, not to mention the fantastic narration.

This audiobook was done in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Michelle Sparks and Troy Duran. They have done the narration on all the prior books in this series and have done a terrific job. Michelle has a soft, feminine voice and Troy has a deep, sexy voice. I have been listening to this series one after the other, and haven’t yet gotten sick of the narration, so that tells you something.

Cheesy puns, an unlikebale FMC, and unremarkable MMC...

This was so subpar compared to the other ones in the series. I was very disappointed tbh.

The extreme feminist vibes were also too much here and the fact that the author made the MMC wrong ALL THE TIME was annoying.

This book is a spicy monster romance with a little bit of plot. There isn’t that much I can’t say that I haven’t already said for the previous books.

Ughhh. Maggie did it again.

Seriously this is one of my absolute favorite series to follow. Every single book just hits all my happy places and I adore them all.

This one follows Gunnar and Lillian, a snow leopard shifter being forced into a marriage she doesn’t want.

What’s the best way to foil the snow leopard societies plans of forcing her to make more snow leopard babies? Getting wasted and asking the hot gargoyle from the bar to marry you for convenience.

Sparks fly, banter ensues, spice spices, and people get slashed with murder mittens.

All in all it is everything I look for in my lil spicy monster reads and I adored every minute of it. 🖤

**3.5-Star Review for *Rock in a Hard Place* by Maggie Mayhem**
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Ah yes, *Rock in a Hard Place*—where your local bad boy is literally made of stone and the girl can only sort of turn into a big cat. This book gave me “misfits find love and throw hands” energy, and honestly, I was here for it.

Gunnar is a gargoyle. Not your average broody shifter—this guy’s a full-on stone sentinel who’s been treated like the boogeyman *by* other monsters. And Lilian? Half snow leopard shifter, which apparently gets her about as much respect as a paper towel in a thunderstorm. She’s got grit, though, and from the first chapter, you can tell she’s not about to let a little rejection keep her down.

Now, our two misunderstood outcasts get thrown together by fate, danger, or some mystical dating algorithm—I won’t spoil it—and boom! It’s protectiveness, healing, and romantic growling from there on out.

Their connection is sweet, even if the romance moves a little fast. (Like “we just met but now I’d die for you” levels of fast.) Still, there’s something charming about their bond—especially watching two people who’ve been told they’re not enough finally find someone who sees them as *everything*.

The standout for me? That epilogue. It wrapped things up with a big emotional bow, the kind that makes you go “aww” and maybe text your own grumpy softie just to say hi.

Could it have used a bit more development and buildup in the middle? Yeah. Did I still enjoy this rocky romance? You bet your stony behind I did.

lillian & gunner🫶

such an amazing book!!!
loved the characters, their banter, the romance & especially the plot!!

fake dating, marriage of convenience ahhh my fav😩🤌

was a bit confused on characters at times due to the fact that this is the first book in the series that i’ve read but i deffo wanna go back and read them in order!!

the epilogue was so cutesy too aww

quotes

“Adorable.” He reached up but snatched his hand back before he actually touched my ear.

“You’re getting the biggest diamond they have in there, and that’s final.

Lillian was fucking gorgeous.

I caught myself rubbing him back. A soft rumbling sound that I’d never made before came from my chest. I was purring!

Had I really gotten so lucky that the most perfect girl in the world had drunkenly asked me to marry her? I was just supposed to be her fake fiancé, but right now, it felt really fucking real to me.

I started at her arch and heels, which earned me a happy sigh. I moved on to the balls of her feet and noticed a splotch of lighter green on her big toenail was an attempt to paint a leaf. Adorable! I brought her foot to my lips and kissed it right on the leaf. She giggled. “I tried, but I was never much of an artist.” “I think it’s cute.”

But here I was, eating my fucking words, because there she was, standing in front of me, everything I never knew I wanted.

“Delicious,” he growled. “Do you know why I chose this dress?” “Why?” His voice growled even deeper. “Easy access.” He reached over and slid his right hand up my thigh and under my skirt. “Lean back and open your legs, Kitten. Be a good girl for me.”

“Say it out loud, Kitten. Tell me you’re all mine. And that I can do whatever I want with you.”

The last few days had shown me a life I never knew I could have. If they wanted her, they were going to have to tear her from my cold, dead hands.

“Everything is going to be fine. You are mine now, and I’ll never let them take you.”

Someone had made her feel not enough. I wanted to find the guy and tear him to pieces.

A low growl started rumbling in Gunnar’s throat, and I put a hand on his arm to calm him.

I made a hiss that sounded very much like a snow leopard, and Tansy raised her eyebrows at me. “Wow, spicy kitty! That’s why I was trying to hide it from you. Don’t worry about it. You know how these gossip rags talk out of their asses.”

He wasn’t listening. “She’s mine,” he growled. He didn’t give Kevin time to say anything, dropping his glamour and lunging for him.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Eamon smacked me upside of the head. I didn’t even try to stop him. I deserved it. “I’m an idiot.”

The only thing going through my head at the time was that I’d die if I lost her.

Tansy’s voice came out a little louder, like she was raising her voice to talk to me directly. “Make her cry again, and I’ll turn you into a frog.” That wasn’t much of a threat. Lillian loved frogs. But I didn’t say anything. The important thing was that Lillian was crying because of me. I hated that.

lake. Flat pieces chipped off it every year and were perfect for pathways—after a quick tumble, of course, to get rid of any sharp edges. I wouldn’t want Lillian to cut herself.

There was a low growl on the other line. “I do not. I am currently flying over Hawaii, and Lillian is not with me. Don’t tell me you’ve lost my granddaughter.”

The city of Darlington was going about its day as usual, none the wiser that my life was imploding. What would I ever do without Lillian? She was all I lived for now.

“Go, Kitten. I love you. Please. I need you to be safe.” His last words were soft and slurred.

I reached toward her. “My mate.” She held onto me and kissed me softly on the forehead. “How are you feeling?” “Groggy. But perfect, now that you’re here.”

On the screen was not a boy with paws but a snow leopard kitten, fully formed from ears to tail. And no wings at all. He looked pissed off and ready to swipe at the camera. Gideon had a bit of a temper; he got his spiciness from his mother. Okay, maybe a bit from me as well.

I grinned as I followed behind her, riveted and feeling like the luckiest gargoyle in the world. This smart, gorgeous, brave woman was mine. All mine. And in approximately two and a half minutes, the time it took for the elevator to reach our floor, I’d get to show her that I was hers too. Forever and ever.

Volume #4 of Possessive Monsters series. Very good Some fab world-building despite it being Book 4. Characters are well-described. Great insertion of characters from previous books without it sounding like a cameo appearance. Lots of twists and turns in the subplots without them sounding template-ish. Didn't check on which part of the book I was reading as if I was trying to see how many pages I had left because of I was bored.

What pisses me off is that I have yet to see any indication this writer plans (hahaha!!! I accidentally typed "plants"!!!!... You have to read it as it's an inside joke with this book...)!!!!!! I want to see what Graham has in his future... or even a book about how Seth and Liam got together and what they plan ti do now... There's so much that can be done with this universe!!

Now that I've read four books in this series, I have this to say...

Maggie Mayhem is talented. She has great brain cells that can create fabulous story lines. She can take what has been very boring plot templates and twisted them around to form new pathways other writers have failed to see. Her world-building is fantastic! All she needs is a far better editor (if she has one) or get herself an editor period!! (I'd volunteer, really. If she's willing to do some hard work yet maintain her crafting skills as a fab writer, I would do it in a heart beat, and I'd do it for free. I just don't find others that are willing to put in the work, unfortunately.)

Lilian was abandoned as a baby and never knew anything about her birth parents. She was adopted by a loving couple. However when she turned six, she developed what she called her murder mittens. When angry, she sprouted paws, fangs and ears. Her adopted parents figured out that she was part snow leopard shifter and contacted them for help. When the snow leopards heard that she couldn't shifter, they dismissed her as useless. That all changed as she grew up. They contacted her and told her that she had until Monday to tie up her affairs. Then she would be picked up and mated with a pure snow leopard to provide more snow leopard babies. Soon after that phone call, she lost her job and her apartment. Lilian goes to a bar to drink where she meets Gunner. She is instantly attracted to him and hopes to have a passionate night with him before she is forced into a mating. Luckily Gunner seems very interested in her. He is willing to help her escape the snow leopards after her by agreeing to marry her.

Gunner is a gargoyle shifter. He and his brothers run Redrock Security. He is very happy that his brothers have found their mates but he envies them too. He is tired of only being wanted for his money or as a dare. He goes to a different bar to get away from being the seventh wheel where he meets Lilian. To his shock, she seems interested in him as a person because she thinks he is just a normal security guard. When she offers to spend the night with him, he takes her home to her place. He refuses to sleep with her because she is too drunk. When she proposes to him, he decides to keep her around to see if she still feels the same way the next morning.

So, right out of the GATE I gotta say I love how the author brings in an element of realism in how the FMC is going to school to be a physical therapist specifically for shifters. I live with several non-visible disabilities that cause a ton of chronic pain so seeing pain, rehabilitation, and recovery themes mentioned related to shifters (who generally are written as impervious to their bodies writing them a bill for past injuries was just really a neat touch. "It was one of the reasons I’d given up the chance to study at Stanford and decided to take classes here instead. Well, that, and Darlington University had a special program for physical therapy geared toward shifters. It had meant an extra year of school, but it was totally worth it. Most shifters let their extra strength and agility get the better of them and wound up injured. And while their bodies did heal faster, it didn’t mean they were immune to chronic pain. As a result, many clinics now had at least one therapist who specialized in shifters and other magical folk, especially since the fall of The Wall."

Add in the FMC is obsessed with plants as basically a hyper fixation (what's up neurospicy feeling representation <3), being MEGA petty and deliciously spiteful in problem solving (hello marrying a stranger to avoid marrying a different stranger but that was shitty and dismissive to you and now is forcing marriage), and being 100000% down to pound down monster town with bonus tail play and praise? Yeah this book is incredible. 5/5 Stars.

“So, you’re saying you’re willing to be my fake fiancé with benefits?”
He shrugged. “It would make it more believable. Unless you’re not—”
“Sold! I’ll do it!” I wasn’t going to give him the chance to second-guess himself on this. I was about to jump his bones last night anyway; might as well get a solution to my problems out of it.

I loved this book. It was such a fun story! Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Lillian and Gunnar. Lillian was a snow leopard shifter who could get cat paws and ears but not fully shift. Snow leopards are very rare and she was contacted by a group giving her only a few days to get her affairs in order before she would be forced to marry and start having cubs to help their species survive. Getting drunk at a bar with no real options left, she spots gargoyle shifter Gunnar and is immediately attracted, as he is to her. When he rescues her from some guys who didn't understand no, she asks him to marry her. The next day sober, she explains her situation and he agrees to help her.

I love the fake relationship trope. But fake marriage to combat a forced real marriage? I had to see how this would work out!

I loved Lillian's personality. She may not be able to do a full shift, but she was still a strong heroine. I loved Gunnar at once. He was honorable and sweet and protective. I loved the supporting characters- and I'm not forgetting Chicken Nugget. I've read the previous books in this series and loved them all, but this one might be my favorite. 5 stars.

Lillian (h), a down-on-her-luck human-snow leopard shifter hybrid, facing an ultimatum to agree to an arranged marriage to save her species, impulsively proposes to Gunnar (H), a brooding, protective gargoyle. What starts as a drunken proposal swiftly escalates into a fake marriage, blurring lines between pretense and genuine emotion. Despite the fake setup, their chemistry ignites a series of unforeseen events, adding depth to their evolving relationship. Lillian's resilience, sass, and wit shine through, sparking fun banter and keeping the drama engaging. Gunnar's protective nature, self-esteem issues, and complexities add depth to his alpha male persona. Together the two share a strong connection, told through a tale of passion, tension, and intrigue, beset with challenges and external threats. The dual perspective gives depth to their evolving relationship and makes the story all the richer - I recently read a third person perspective work and I realized just how much multiple POVs bring to a work. The strong secondary characters, offering a peek into an intriguing paranormal world, and add richness, depth and humor. Sweet and spicy gargoyle-shifter romance with plenty of heat, humor, steamy moments, and a dash of paranormal intrigue.

Right Where She Wants To Be

If you love the marriage of convenience and fake relationship tropes, and love a good monster romance, then you NEED this book. This book tells Lillian’s story. She’s being forced into an arranged marriage all because she has a bit of snow leopard shifter blood in her veins, and it’s supposed to help save the species. She’s not really on board with that though, and after drowning her sorrows just a bit too much, she might have propositioned the guy she met while doing the drowning lol. He happens to be a gargoyle, and he agrees to her arrangement. Gunnar is every protective, growly, sexy AF book boyfriend you could want, wrapped up in a gargoyle body that’s meant to stand in front of danger and take control. This whole book draws you in quickly, and within the 1st chapter you already find yourself invested in seeing Lillian and Gunnar get a HEA together. Their chemistry is crazy, and you’d almost think he was a dragon shifter with how much fire they have together 🔥😝 This was by far my favorite book in this series so far. Not gonna lie, it’s all because of Gunnar 😍🙌🏻❤️ Grab this book, because I know you’ll devour it just as fast as I did 😈

- Fake marriage
- Possessive MMC
- Sassy FMC

I love the Possessive Monsters series and was pleased to pick up this installment. The majority of couples from the other books make appearances in this story, allowing us to catch up with them.

In this book, Lillian is part snow leopard, but cannot fully shift. Regardless, she has been contacted by a group called White Claws and they want her to join their group to try to repopulate their species. They are incredibly persistent. Lillian is not keen on the idea, but after losing her job and her apartment, she is running out of options. The only way out would be if she was already married.

She spends an evening drinking to forget about the looming deadline. There she meets an incredibly handsome man named Gunnar. They are wildly attracted to each other and Lillian casually proposes to him, knowing he'll never agree.

Gunnar is a gargoyle who feels very protective of Lillian - even more so after she tells him her story. He agrees to the marriage and hopes they can make it real one day. For now, they'll just enjoy each other and try to stay one step ahead of those trying to take Lillian.

I just love gargoyle stories and this one is perfection!.

This was Brilliant and I love the storyline that pulls you in and takes you on a wild ride. Lilian is a human / snow leopard shifter and was given up as a baby and was adopted and when she started showing signs os a leopard shifter her parents contacted the White Claw Group who wasn’t interested at first because she couldn’t shift but when she got older they called and told her she was getting married in 3 days and be ready. Now after losing everything she heads to the bar where she meets the sexiest man alive and asks him to marry her and tells him everything and he agrees to help out. Gunnar Redrock is a Gargoyle shifter and he and his brothers own and run Redrock Security and he has envied his brothers who have found there mates and longs to be wanted for himself and not his money which has him in a different bar where he meets a gorgeous female he is very attracted to and when she asks him to marry her to save her from the White Claw Group and he agrees to help her and be her fake fiancée. The chemistry is off the charts between these two and what starts out as fake soon turns real. There is heaps more to this book that will keep you entertained throughout and you will love. Definitely a must read.

Lillian & Gunner

Ahh the fake fiance storyline, always enjoy this one. This is an instalove story, so if that's not your thing...look away. But this was done right, very low angst, the FMC was adorable and very likeable and Gunner has always just been yummy! The town, the magical community is funny and interesting. Highly recommend!

I really liked this story. The whole series is fun to read, but I think this might be my new favorite. The twists and turns the plot took kept me turning the pages to the wee hours.

Lillian needed rescuing and Gunnar was there for her, any way she wanted him to be. Lillian was quirky, funny, and totally into Gunnar. Gunnar became her protective, spicy, possessive gargoyle. He did have a sad self-esteem issue that, at one point, threatened to mess their budding relationship. But the drama between the two love birds was kept to a minimum. Which was fine because there were so many other forces trying to get in the way of their HEA.

I loved all the characters, even the villains. I loved the plot. I loved the great ending. Would love to see a story about grown-up Gideon some day.

Highly recommend this fun, spicy story.

Lillian is not having a good time. She has just lost her job, her landlord has given her notice and apparently because she has snow leopard blood in her she is being mated to another snow leopard, against her will and even though she can't fully shift. Determined to get drunk she finds herself attracted to a man at a bar who then rescues her from some men outside. Gunnar is intrigued by Lillian and when he discovers what is happening to her he offers to marry her which Lillian accepts. The snow leopard community isn't giving up despite her marriage but there is also something else going on behind the scenes and when Lillian and Gunnar argue she finds herself in trouble and not from who they thought. A heartwarming beautiful story with lots of drama and angst. Sizzling and funny, I loved the banter between her parents, this is a great addition to the series and I would give it 10 stars if I could.

The Redrock brothers. What a family. Gunnar was the "bad boy" brother. Or so people thought. We get to learn more about him. What were lies/myths and what was the truth. I love the way they met and Lillian's proposal. I loved his protectiveness. Also loved his nickname for her and how she got it.
Lillian is in trouble. I love the ways she was able to help herself and the way she and Gunnar worked together. Her background was unique.
Lots of secrets and twists to make the story interesting.
Action , drama and misunderstanding makes this a great story. And of course a perfect HEA for them. Steam to the romance.
I also like that the other brothers and their mates were able to help. I was able to remanence about their stories as well. This is a story I will be rereading in the future, especially when I want something that has a million smiles to it.

Lillian is drowning her sorrows at the local bar. She has just been let go from her job, been told to move out from her appartment and heard from the shadowy snow panther organisation that she has until Monday to get her affairs in order before she's collected for an arranged marriage to a stranger. Drunk enough at the end of the evening she asks the huge hunk of a man on the barstool next to her to marry her.

Gunnar is feeling sorry for himself as he is the last of his group to find his mate. Lonely and morose he can't help but be taken with the drunk little spitfire sitting next to him. When she puts forward her unusual proposal he grabs at it and has no intention of letting go.

This is when the adventure starts. Shadowy shifter group threatening to kidnap Lillian, oppressive press attention and an unnerving unseen watcher.

Another fantastic story from this series.

Fun and steamy continuation of the Possessive Monsters series. Lillian is an adopted snow leopard shifter who can only partially shift but is being forced into an arranged marriage with another snow leopard by the Wild Claws clan for breeding purposes. She meets Gunnar, a bodyguard gargoyle and there is unrequited lust at first sight but Gunnar saves Lillian from a threatening situation and upon hearing her plight, agrees to marry her instead. This sets off a chain of events that will bring them closer but also expose Lillian to new unknown danger. Love how strong and resourceful Lillian was - she is a perfect partner for Gunnar. It was wonderful to catch up with the other characters in the series and Lillian’s adoptive parents rock!!! Great epilogue.

Lillian is a half snow leopard shifter who can’t shift, and she’s been targeted for a forced mating program of which she wants no part. She can get out of it if she’s mated to another.
As fate would have it, she meets Gunnar the hot gargoyle in a bar and she half-jokingly asks him to marry her to save her from whatever random match the sketchy matchmaking cadre assigns to her.
Scorching attraction gives way to real feelings, but the road to true love is never a straight route. The newlyweds must overcome several obstacles before they can decide whether to stay together as man (gargoyle) and wife in truth.
Maggie Mayhem brings in lots of old friends, and smoldering sexy times for Lillian and Gunnar.
Love this series, and I love this book.
I received an advance reader copy from the author and booksprout and I’m pleased to leave my honest take on this novella.

Gunnar and Lilian are two very similiar people. They both have constantly been overlooked for being who they are. For Gunnar, it was being a gargoyle. Being considered a monster among monsters. The reader gets an inside look at the real Bad Boy Redrock.
For Lilian, she was never enough because she was only a half snow leopard shifter, who couldn't fully shift. She was rejected by other shifters.
Happenstance places these two together where she is protected and he is accepted and they find love.
From the beginning, the reader gets a glimpse of Lilian's inner strength. My favorite part of the book was the epilogue, it was a nice conclusion to Gunnar and Lilian's story.

Gunnar is a gargoyle who meets Lilian at a bar in downtown Darlington. After he rescues Lillian from some young men, she instantly proposes to him. Because she is a little tipsy from the alcohol she consumed, Gunnar takes her back to his condo. The next morning she explains that she is a partial snow leopard shifter and that she is being taken on Monday for a breeding program if she isn’t married. It is supposed to be a marriage of convenience but neither expected to turn into so much more. I loved the characters and the storyline especially because there were some shifts in the story. If you live paranormal romance, alpha males, and strong heroines, this book is for you!.

This one was interesting. I have been reading the entire series, and I have not been disappointed yet. This one left me a little more unsatisfied than the others. It seemed to be so rushed. The action was resolved so quickly, yet we can drone on and on about cleaning an apartment or running errands. I wanted to read more about him ripping apart everyone in his way to save his mate.
Gunner is also a big 'ol dummy. Makes dumb decisions regularly. With Eamon and Grayson, they were ahead of the ballgame in their stories, as they run a security business. So why is Gunner so lacking in basic common sense? It made him the least likeable of the crew (albeit we never got to read about Griff's story and looking at the series, we never get to see if the last brother ends up mated).

"Bad Boy" Gunnar is HUGE but it masks the sweetest heart and a ginormous softie! He's been feeling left out as he's the last single brother and penthouse resident. This was a great story of how two people inadvertently backed into a relationship in every way you never should. Lots of unexpected twists and turns in the story.

Some previous villians make a surprise appearance and aren't easily identifiable until the right point in the story. A wonderful plot, world building, and characters that should not be missed! Think this was actually the best in the series.
